The housing does just slide out towards the rear. But if it doesn't go easily, DO NOT pull on the plastic parts or they will break. Instead, pushing it from the front towards the rear. If it won't pop out, try sliding a cloth strap or belt in under the front edge of the light and pulling towards the rear. It will slide out easily then, but remember that it is connected by wires to the body of the car, so once it is loose, be gentle with it. Whole process is easy and takes less than 5 minutes from lift gate up to lift gate down. The only purpose I can see for anything plastic would be to help side the strap in under the lead edge of the housing.
Cloth strap worked for me. Used an old canvas belt, gave the leverage needed. Prying with a piece of plastic does not seem like it would ever work without breaking the tab...
Yeah this is the way. I had a strap that I use to secure stuff on the roof that I just wedged behind the front part of the housing, and gave it a little pull. Snapped right off.
I used a plastic credit card and it worked by bending it into a shape to pull the light housing. The key I think is to make sure that you are pulling the assembly back and apply force in the right direction. I kept my hand on the taillight to press it "backward" and not accidentally pry the light assembly off.
Thanx so much for taking the time to do this video. I had the bolts out and could not figure why I could not remove the light. This helps a lot. Thanx again.
Hi, just to note, I used a wide silicone spatula and inserted from the top like what you did, but then moved to the back and push the assembly back to get it off the clip.
Great instructional video but you do not pry the light off the back clip! After the bolts are removed the unit slides away from the quarter panel. After bulbs are replaced line the tail light up with the quarter panel and slide it back into place then replace the bolts.
Do NOT use a plastic trim tool as damage can occur. Simply apply tape and pull to rear: th-cam.com/video/WVP2VbpKbqM/w-d-xo.html There are 4 guide pins to be engaged when reinstalling. Simply slide back into place from the rear, making sure that guides pins are aligned before sliding into place.
just add wd40 where he puts his card, It helps the plastic slide. The card isn't releasing anything. That "clip" is not a clip. It is more a male/female slide-in /slide out that holds the overhang part of the light assembly. And old dry dusty plastic tends to not slide, so wd40 :)
Bad video by the publisher. Do not try to pop out the fitting as author suggests. Likely to break a piece of the entire housing out. It is not meant to be popped out. It slides backwards fairly easily. And when lined up correctly it slides right back into place very easily. Don't try to pop it out as author suggests.
someone probably already was in their and broke the clip - these are a total pain if never changed before and the vehicle had been on the road 5 years before oem bulb burned out

Your method is very good ! I use a discount card to take out the light assembly. Thank you! Save a lot of money 😂🎉
great video. i used a flat wood mixer to get the light out and it worked perfectly.
Thanks for saving me like 80 bucks for a 5 minute fix
I was able to do this in 10 minutes because of your tip! Thank you!!!!!!!!

Why is the button brake lights didn't turn on?

Thank you for this tip. Worked great with tape and pulling toward the rear!
Ruined two cards and it wouldn’t pop out, finally bought trim removal set from autozone for $13 and it worked.
I have not been able to get the (right) taillight assembly to come off the plastic latch.
Will try again later using RevoVB's comments.

Not me trying to pop the clip out when it just slides backwards 🤣
Thank you
Thanks -- good!
Hi anyone knows what is the bottom light? The top is the brake light, the middle is reverse. What is the bottom? I am unable to figure it out. Thx
Good advice except I disagree with the going without the Trim tool. GET THE TRIM TOOL. ITS CHEAP AND WAY EASIER IF YOU USE IT
Probably should have mentioned that you never touch the bulbs with bare hands or fingers. always wear gloves to keep body oils off the bulb. 😎👍
You can use string instead of plastic card

Unscrew the bolts and pull straight AWAY from the car.
DO. NOT. PRY.

This was misleading. That’s not a compression clip- the light fixture slides onto that clip
The housing just pops out ( don't need to use the plastic card ).
I'm having the same issues as OP here. Can't get this thing off for the life of me.
someone probably already was in their and broke the clip - these are a total pain if never changed before and the vehicle had been on the road 5 years before oem bulb burned out
your pulling towards the side of the car instead of towards the trunk.. . .
Plastic card there does nothing. Just slide it towards the back
