    How can you show this incredible car without going into it's history? This car won the GT class at LeMans, this car set speed records at Bonneville, this car was on a episode of 'The Monkees' this car was owned by Phil Spector... if this car could talk....

      Seen one, great Documentary on it, Mecum, before trying to sell one, great footage, yawn test etc, explanation of the shape, aerodynamic development.. these Men stood up against the Gaint named Ferrari.. why GT40 was even a real possibility.. cheers from Southern California

    The speedometer was placed where the glove box would be because FIA required the race cars to have a speedometer. Shelby didn’t like that. He protested because you don’t need a speedometer in a race car. FIA Required him to do it, so he put the speedo on the passenger side as an act of defiance.

    Can you imagine 5 of the 6 cars almost ended up in the bottom of the English Channel? Shelby didn't want to pay the freight to get them back to the US as the stories go after Ford told him to dump the program or else. What amazes me is that if just 5% of the money that went to develop this car further from the GT40 program, most likely the Daytona would have won the GT championship in 64, almost certainly would have won the 64 Le mans outright if not for a rock piercing its oil cooler. Still the Daytonas won both 64 and 65 their class at Le Mans and the GT championship in 65.

    There is so much more to the story of this car.
    I am a Southern California native/resident that was reading about this car when it came up for air.
    It's whereabouts mostly unknown, it belonged to a woman (who was maybe a bit challenged?) who was the daughter of one of Phil Spector's former bodyguards, which is how she ended up with it. The story kind of unfolded around me geographically. I'm from Fullerton, she lived nearby, and she drove a forklift in Santa Ana, and the car was stashed in storage in La Habra
    It seemed (to me) that once it was learned that she had it, that she was bombarded with offers.
    It got to be a bit much for her, so she took her pet rabbits with her, went to a bridal trail in Fullerton, and committed suicide by setting herself, and her pet rabbits on fire.
    The back-story ain't always pretty, everyone.
    The car ended up in this collection shortly afterwards, after making a few stops after her death.
    I bet that is some paper trail of temporary ownerships?

      @@lowbaritonewwj Let's go back in time on this incredible car... After Alan Mann got his 1965 racing season finished with the FIA Sports car championship being won, Shelby cared so little about these cars, he told Mann to dump them in the middle of the ocean! Obviously Mann didn't and paid out of his pocket to send them back to California... this car was then lent to Goodyear and taken to Bonneville where it set a bunch of records.... back to Shelby it went before being sold for about $2,500 to Jim Russkit, one of the major pioneers of slot car racing. When Russkit owned it, a friend was friends with Don Kirchner, pop music guru and producer of 'The Monkees' tv show... they rented the car from Russkit who by this time figured out tired, 2 year old race cars don't make good transportation... it was through Kirchner and his people that the car would up with Phil Spector... A movie about this car would be appropriate... just don't let the jackasses that did 'Ford vs Ferrari' do it....

  • @Loulovesspeed
    @Loulovesspeed 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It's hard to imagine that this very car went to Bonneville after its road racing life ended and set many speed records. When it came back to Shelby's shop it was dented, covered with salt and had a broken headlight. Shelby offered it to anyone in the shop for $800! They laughed at him and no offers came forth!

    • @roberthill2219
      @roberthill2219 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The story is the car was sitting in the shop when slot car Pioneer Bob Russkit came by to cut some kind deal with Shelby or just hang out... he bought the car cheap and tamed it a bit to drive it on the street... he was friendly with Don Kerchner, the man behind 'The Monkees' and that's how it wound on the show... Phil Spector was also friends with Kerchner and used to come to the set from time to time and it was love at first sight... let's not get into the legal battle about 10 years ago over who actually owned the car after Spector went to prison...

    Thank you. This car is indeed very interesting indeed as the replicas now cluttering up race tracks in Europe are very far from this specification with wider tracks and roll cages replacing the chassis design (but most race organisers do not give a peter about the autos if the owners have thick wallets).

    This car was the FIRST Daytona Coupe to be RESTORED. Jim Russell - Russkit slotcars - bought it from Shelby with a fresh 289 street Hipo. He had a show quality paint job put on it and had Tony Nancy stitch up a new show quality interior. The condition is due to it sitting in an un conditioned storage place for nearly 30 years.

    My boss bought his business from another guy. Now the guy that my boss bought his business from is a part time delivery driver for my boss. I've met the guy a few times, and thought he was a pretty alright guy. One day we were talking about him (he works in a different building about 15 miles away) and I was made aware that his entire family is filthy rich, and he owns an actual real-deal factory original Shelby Cobra. He's tried taking it to car shows a few times, but his insurance company won't insure it for any amount of money. They straight up told him that he cannot ever drive it.
    I didn't know all of this until recently, so it was a major shock to me that a part time delivery driver at my work is not only filthy rich, but owns a real Cobra. It was quite a shock. He also owns a 2005 Ford GT, which I also think is a crazy cool car. I have no idea why, but his daily driver is a 1995 Chevy S10 that looks like it's ready for the scrap yard.

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr Nobody - This guy desperately needs Vintage car insurance. Companies like Hagerty, Grundy and other insurers for high value vintage cars do not work that way. Sounds like he is dealing with a traditional insurance company and they don't want any part of insuring vehicles of this nature. Vintage car insurance will cover the car for an agreed stated amount, which is what you would be paid in a total loss, without any depreciation factored in. They also allow limited miles to be driven. Sorry, but I'm a bit disbelieving of this guy's story!

    The scoops were insufficient; they had to cut holes in the roof at Sebring because the driver was roasting. Also, the reason this one is unrestored is due to it was the "lost" coupe. It was assumed lost/destroyed until 20 years ago, found literally in a storage unit. Amazingly, when these things go for auction, they still sell for less than a 250 GTO (more of those were produced), albeit still $1million easy. I guess an American car will always be considered "less than" Italian, even when it proves otherwise (this car was built to beat the 250 GTO).
