My wife owned one of the Superformance Coupes, chassis 52. Beautiful car. She sold it after two years as it was not really her thing but one day we received a call and it was Peter Brock. He was asking all of the owners how they like the car. I thought the call would end when I informed him that we no longer owned the car. I was wrong. He spent an hour on the phone talking cars and motor sports history. He would probably not remember. I will never forget. True gentleman and an icon in automotive history!

RedSow'71 funny you should say that. I am a massive fan of Peter Brock but not this guy. Never knew he existed but the Aussie Peter Brock is regarded as Australia’s greatest domestic race driver. He won our greatest race 9 times and unbelievably died (after professional retirement) in a car accident competing in a Targa race while racing in a ........ get this...... Daytona! You can’t make this stuff up.

What a phenomenal talent at such a young age! I have SO much respect for what Pete has accomplished and for his Daytona Coupe that is still acknowledged as one of the mileposts in automotive design. People laugh at the idea but the Daytona Coupe was not much more than an idea on a cocktail napkin to begin with... and look where it took Pete Brock, Carroll Shelby and the rest of that historic crew. What a milestone for such a small group of men that set the GT Racing Community on its collective ear in the mid-60s.

I had the privilege of sitting down and talking with New Zealander John Olsen in his Developments workshop at Onehunga in Auckland during 1997.
I previously had been building AC Type replica Cobra's in Brisbane under contract for export to Dubai and Japan. At the time of my visit John was building a replica Daytona Coupe for an American business man.
John was a very modest man, he closed the doors and we talked or should I say I listened, drank countless cups of tea, John had an amazing history, a silent achiever, he spoke about Pete Brock, Shelby and all the others involved in that magical era, it was a pivotal moment for me meeting John, an honour. Sadly not long after that he passed away, his family took his ashes in the Daytona to Pukekohe race track for one last round.
Appreciate your modesty as well Mr Brock. Great interview Thank You

One of my favorite stories; Peter Brock as the young kid full of ideas but without the experience to convince everyone in the shop to follow him off the cliff, being allowed his skeleton crew a few months to develop a new body for a proven competitive design and blowing apart conventional thinking with less than a shoestring budget. It made me a bit sad to hear Ken Miles’ name, his death was a huge blow not just to the Cobra/GT40 program but to Shelby, Brock, Remington and all else who knew and worked with him for the rest of their lives. Ken was a special talent for sure.

I got Mr. Brocks back here: The names of the gents who were the pioneers of streamlined design are in the order he mentioned them 1) the famous Austrian (not German!) Erwin Kommenda, who designed the VW Bug, the Porsche 356, the Porsche 550 Spyder as well as the early concepts for the 911 shortly before his death; 2) Reinhard von König-Fachsenfeld and 3) Wunibald Kamm, the latter two were from the Stuttgart area and were responsible for designing some of the sleekest automobile designs known to the thirties (Mercedes SSK and Auto Union Type C. How great a man he must be to so matter-of-factly give credit to the pioneers of early streamlining and then to top it off with that emotional shout-out to the gent who gave him his shot at car design immortality! Great story, Mr. Brock! Stay happy and healthy!

This was the institution of the kam-tail design, used extensively used in aero bicycle designs today. All the cars you mentioned had the teer drop aerodynamic design. This was the first time it was instituted in racing with great results.

    • @monkmchorning
      @monkmchorning 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The Kamm truncated airfoil was especially effective in bicycle aerodynamics in the way of took advantage of FIS rules on tube cross sections. And that also made the bikes faster and more stable in yaw situations.

This Man over being a legend is a true gentleman. A humble giant. To see him crying just by mentionning Phil Remington's name. You can feel the respect and pure admiration of legendary Phil, a astonishing man by himself. So heart warming. I learned about this exceptionnal Man by the way of his BRE Datsuns, John Morton, another younster learning the ropes by first being the gofer at the shop. I was 18 in 1970, THE car to have was the fabulous 510, any young racing fan knew about Brock, Morton and Mister K. Legends. Still have goose bumps listening to him and remembering my youth.
PS I finally put my hands on a '72 510, apple green, I added racing stripes of course, found cheap, used Mini-Lites wheels, bullet mirrors, a Stebro exhaust (awesome sound !!) and all.
I then had to sell it after only a 1 1/2 year to pay for college. I was devastated seeing it going. Now at 67, I still go through ads to find a good one, unmolested... ❤️ This time out, it would be a exact copy, to the last bolt of John Morton's car, 240Z parts and all. Dream on...

So nice to be reminded of John Olsen. I took over from him to build the Willment Daytona Coupe. John had been employed to do a replica Daytona for Willment but left suddenly leaving a note which said "good luck with these bastards Brian" What he meant precisely I still don't know but he had only built the body buck and there were no details of any kind - not even a chassis at that stage. I was given the FIA blue book and told to get on with it. I had met John, whilst moonlighting at Ian Walker racing, from my apprenticeship at Aston Martin where, coincidentally, I had met Carrol Shelby in 1959 when Le Mans was my first race with them.

I had the honor to meet Mr. Brock at his warehouse, thanks to my good friend Jim King, another amazing gentleman who knew more about cars than anyone I've ever met. I will remember that day forever. Daytonas have always been one of all-time favorite cars.

An absolute mesmerising interview. I actually filled up when Peter did. What a great great story teller. A real coincidence though, that the Australian race car driver Peter Brock unfortunately died in a crash while racing a replica of this beautiful iconic car.

Back in the mid-1990s, I was working on a program promoting propane as an automotive fuel, and our group was a sponsor of a competition that pitted teams of automotive engineering students from various US and Canadian universities against each other. Each group was provided with a gasoline-powered vehicle, and the teams modified them to run on propane, then took them to Texas where the competitions were held. Shelby had agreed to serve as an advisor to the students, but shortly before the events, Shelby's wife was killed in a car accident. I called Shelby and told him we'd understand if he wanted to cancel out. Instead, he recommended Pete Brock, who was absolutely wonderful, working with the students. What a gift!

My 427 '65 Cobra held records at Riverside before I owned it. The greatest sensation came when those giant wheels broke loose going into 4th at 125mph. Solid testosterone back in '66 and once you feel and hear the rumble, there are no other cars worth considering. Brock is obviously a genius with oil in his veins; what a gentleman!
