  • The Hidden Gem of Tranquebar, When Denmark Camped in India During Colonial Era | Firstpost Unpacked
Tranquebar, now referred to as Tharangambadi is a quaint town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The coastal town was once controlled by Denmark during the colonial era. It was leased to the Danish East India Company by Thanjore's king and was then used as an outpost for Denmark's Monarchy.
Fast forward to the 21st century, Tranquebar has been turned to a cultural and tourist hotspot. The Danish buildings have been turned into hotels and museums and the colonial legacy lives on in the modern era.

A very enlightening video. When I was first told that I had Danish blood in me; I passed it of as a “joke” but it is all beginning to make sense now. My forbears came from the village of Pagasalai. I grew up in Karaikal, Ponbethy, Nedungadu, Kurumbagaram. I still own a piece of land in Melakasakudy. Thank you for unearthing this piece of History. Almost all European country seems to have made India their business hub of the early 15-16th century. India should have been a credible place back then 🙎

Yes, they somehow messed up the video with that term. A "factory" or "trading post" is a much more appropriate term.

So you learned nothing through your visit 😅 !
Danish East India Compagny wasn't a "Colonial Adventure", perhaps due to its very limited capabilities, and always have been a commercial enterprise based on these outposts (Tranquebar, Serampore, etc.).
No one from that region (Tanjore) can tell you any kind of atrocities done by the Danish.
Just read about their history in Tharangambadi.
