What I loved about this movie is that it didn't raise the black women by lowering the white men. The white men in this movie are very smart, very capable, very professional people. It just illustrated that the black women could operate on the same level as them, which is what people didn't really expect. And then there's several scenes where the white women are like, "It's not my fault things are the way they are." I loved that because while most people aren't outwardly racist, the fact that they were content to just leave things the way they were was the reason that it took so long for equal rights to take hold, and still hasn't completely to this day. I just want to know if Katherine Johnson ever got a pay raise to what she was worth in all those years she worked at NASA.

I disagree on one point. After laws were equally applied then civil rights job was done and after civil rights laws were past the ball is now in each citizens court to do with as they please. Its correct to say black Americans started behind white Americans but that does not mean they had to stay there. MLK said after blacks were freed then they were free to only die which is kinda the idea you seem to be working with but I don't agree with that school of thought because anyone is free to die as a slave just give up. Once you have freedom you now have the chance to live. Fredrick Douglass is the prime example of this very idea. The man was literally freed from slavery when and got himself an education and became a statesmen. From no chance to live to seizing every opportunity to live to his fullest. This school of thought you have is currently hanging over my trans community when really its up to us. If we show society we also contribute then society accepts us because society wants success. Some blacks throughout history have done exactly what I want to happen in the trans community and it has worked. So what you start the game late, all that means is you have more data than anyone else and can keep from following the same mistakes. Asians who came to the U.S. long after black Americans were free were even more successful than white or black Americans while still dealing with racism also. I would also point out Asian american also preach strong family units not just because of the many Asian cultures but also because they probably saw how successful it was for black Americans from the 20s to about the 50s. It does not mean blacks had it easy but at the time more black Americans percentwise were rising out of poverty faster than their white counterparts up until the government offered to take care of single mothers removing a father responsibility and eventually decaying into black men being locked up because of a lack of a man in the household to teach their young men how to act and be successful in society. When you see well off or stable black families the father almost always present. Granted I also think having 2 parents is better than one but that is an opinion backed by science.

I am grateful that this film was made in Katherine Johnson's lifetime. And that it introduced many of us to her genius and commitment to the US Space Program. She is (was) a national treasure.
I've seen this film a number of times and it never gets old. The three main characters go on to great things in space flight for decades. NASA named a building after Katherine Johnson (Goble). That's how important she and they were to the space race and beyond. Watch this film! You won't be sorry.
... and read the book.... it is more impressive. I watched the movie and then I bought the book to see how accurate it was. It was fairly good, but it could not tell in 2 hours the full story.

See the shot where he hands her the stick of chalk. He is literally passing her the baton. She will carry it over the finishing line that keeps moving, and will pass it on for others to carry. Superb symbolism.
The handing the chalk is a replica of the scene as a child where the math teacher asked her to solve the equation. There she was the pupil, here she's the teacher.

I love that moment when she was handed the chalk and her eyes gleamed under the glasses, kinda nerdy and cute but also confident.

The first time I watched this film I was so overwhelmed I had to watch it again the following day just to appreciate it properly. It was a beautiful film and moved me to tears more than once.

Yeah me too, especially as a woman of color who loves math, it struck a chord.
I was angry. I kept saying why hadnt I heard about these women before? What other history is kept from us? It's an inspiring story. I wish I had strong, intelligent women like these to look up to as a child.
If you haven't yet, I highly recommend reading the book that the movie is based on. It goes more in depth and tells much more of the story.

Nobody ever comments this but she is exceptionally beautiful. Not just her looks either. Her style, her poise, her grace, her voice, her determination. She nearly glows. Shes like magic.
That is glow is why they are called stars.

We've had plenty of astronaut stories, but it was really great to hear some of the stories of the fantastic folks behind the scenes who help make the space program successful.

It is so amazing. These women had so much to give, they were just born in the wrong gender and color to receive the recognition they deserved but their determination just never waivered to achieve what they wanted to. Just makes you so proud.

Christine Fernandez - Not wrong gender; not wrong color. Their time, place, race and gender served a good purpose in history. Black people in 2018 aren't recognized for their accomplishments as they should be. Things have changed but at a snail's pace.

There are many things that have contributed to many different parts of important history, but if each and every one of those details were added, and explained, then the history book would be much larger... These women did get recognized, otherwise there wouldn't be a movie based off of real events, which would not have been known or heard of if someone hadn't recorded them...
History books leave a ton out because to record every person working on a project like this would end up boring the average reader, so they usually give big names such as Nixon, Neil, and Buzz.

I love the part in every movie where someone is underestimated and then blows away everyone in the room with their intelligence. Great movie.
Happens in this country all the time in real life . So many people here are dismissed by their age, race, color, gender, ethnicity, social status economic status, looks, lack of experience etc..
It’s one thing to do math and get the answers right but for her to deliver this line and add a small smirk when she’s done, really shows how Katharine really loved what she was doing. Superb acting!
I will say that math is more important, and I am sure she will agree with me. That is one of the reasons the USA is under an epidemy of homelessness and the number of immigrants has exceeded the capacity of many cities (that could trigger a violent backslash): people in power that are more interested in giving lessons, having people "pay" and similar instead of keeping the eyes in the objectives.

it was an amazing movie. the actors were genius but the women they represented are magnificent! imagine the walls they broke down! They are a huge part of the sucess of the space program in the 60's up to now. Amazing! Just freakin AMAZING!
I am so glad that such movies were made. Read the book and see that they helped conquer the speed of sound too.
I also like how it wasn’t about how “these women are smarter than the men”. They didn’t try and didn’t make it dimeaning about the “white man”.They were plenty smart and I felt that was well represented too. The ladies could literally keep up with them, it was just they’ve never gotten a chance until now really. The white women were even just like “that’s just the way it is, sorry 🤷🏼♀️” and it wasn’t that they were being outwardly racist, it was just that they were so used to the way of the world they couldn’t see that these things were wrong or that the women weren’t being treated equally or set to the same standard! :) (I hope this made sense the way my head made it make sense)
@@madisonmorris7394 Actually, in the movie I felt the women were treated as cattle. They were given the drudgery of computation and were going to be superceded by a machine, a broken machine not many knew how to operate. The opportunity to do any other job was not even open to them. They had to educate themselves for any possibility of staying.
Karl Zipp they chose to work there and the machine to succeed them was simply an advancement not unlike replacing the assembly line workers with machines. They were just trying to get the best results they were able to, and they took that to mean, giant computer.

This director took a complex and very sensitive story and made it palpable for everyone. From top to bottom excellence was achieved. The cast, script, editing and music, just wow. I've watched it so many times.
I love how Katherine's just sitting listening to the conversation when her boss turns to ask her to do the calculations her response is one of somewhat surprise but not fear. because her world is numbers
When Kevin Costner handed her the chalk, that was priceless.
She was fantastic in this movie. Costner always plays the same character- the white guy with a heart of gold.

@Thor Swenson Generally bigger more expensive movie productions do not allow for open casting calls. Agents of established actors will arrange for them to audition. And for the most part established actors are attractive well-known individuals, not regular looking average people.
I love when she's at the board, scrunches her nose and uses her finger to lift up her glasses right before she shows out with the calculations
Films that's are actually true stories are the best, and this film is one of them. These ladies who helped the space race are true heroes.
Black Women help them get to the moon and Black men help fought the wars and be became heroes and we still can't get recognition or respect for the efforts. The contribution are endless!!!
They left these women out of our history books, that's really a tragedy!

They didn't speak to me whole time I was there even until graduation. Mechanical Engineering major too and working on designs right now for new inventions!

This is probably the BEST historical movie I’ve ever seen.
The amazing thing about these women was they stuck together and had each other’s backs. Later in the movie when computers are introduced they all learned how they worked and how to program them. When you work together no one is expendable!
It's really ashame that I didn't know about these women until this movie came out. Wonderful performance and wonderful women.

While she might not have been that well known with the general public, her work at NACA/NASA has earned her a lot of respect in the industry and beyond. NASA has named 2 buildings after her and multiple educational institutions have also named buildings and even an entire school after her. All 3 women in this movie have left their mark on NASA.
EVERY time I watch this and I've watched it a good number now, I am SO PROUD of these women!! They show the men that they CAN do amazing things, as God has given them the gifts and brains.

Absolutely one of the best movies i've ever seen before. I dont even know what got me start watching it. All I know, was it had just started when the women were in their 57 chevy. I didnt even know it was based on a real story at the time of watching it, until after watching the end. These ladies were absolutely smarter than most men there. And that's why I think that I enjoyed it so much.
The very person she helps put in space showed more respect than nearly every one else.

I'm from Calvert County Maryland where Ms Jackson taught at Brooks High School. She's always been a bit of a legend in my hometown.
I read Catherine’s memoir she wrote with her daughter. Excellent. She was an exceptional woman. Dedicated to her profession, caring wife and mother and loved God and her country

There's always been people in history that was so envious that they rather have a setback if they couldn't do it rather than give it to someone truly gifted that could, I truly believe if they would've got out of her way and let her do her thing along with those two other brilliant sista's that we probably would be living on Mars or at least the moon by now.

It kinda cut it out but Mr. Harrison chuckled before giving the chalk to Katherine when I saw the movie. It took me a bit to realize that he knew how smart Katherine was and that he knew she could do it in a heartbeat.
I love this movie! Even if the history books haven't changed yet, I became extremely interested in them enough where I couldn't help but look them up.

Taraji P Henson is such a Talented woman . I have watched her in several shows . From Hustle and Flow to Hidden Figures . Her characters make you feel things . Such a wonderful actress.
