Honestly I'm very biased in saying that emet-selch's voice in ShB and his quips and how gut wrenching going through it keeps it at the top, but DT was a needed palette cleanser - I loved the orange cat energy of Lamaty'i and I still struggle finding where people so much dislike her voice or her saying papá (although her saying ₛₚₕₑₑₙₑ was funny but I'm glad they re-recorded that scene to have more impact). Just happy to see such a positive perspective and proper analysis of the story.
I love Lamatys voice!!! All of the accents in Tural made me so happy haha. It makes me sad that people outside my little bubble seem to have nothing but bad things to say about Dawntrail and I just don’t see it personally 😅 I loved everything about it haha. I have to say hearing Alisae quote Emet on at least one occasion did make me scream a little, I do miss our Ascian buddies.
What a pleasant video, usually dont click on youtube's random recommendations that pop up from small channels but I had actually been curious for a perspective like yours.
Loved your thoughts, and appreciate the insight on the zones and quests from your perspective, especially the pronunciations that I never dared to try lol. I know many have conflicting feelings over the story, but I'm glad that it seems Square did their due diligence and respected the sources of their inspiration.
Adding something for the algorithm; other commenters have said it as well but I do appreciate an actual happy opinion on DT and Tural, and love hearing your perspective on the (fictionalized) cultures they are trying to portray.
It's so nice seeing another positive perspective on Dawntrail when most corners of the internet are filled with hate for it. I'm so tired of living in critical, negative, hateful spaces. It's so exhausting so this video is truly a breath of fresh air. Not only that, but you're also highlighting a lot of the research done and efforts made by the writers/devs to create fictional cultures that are inspired by real world cultures. That research is something that can be appreciated by a lot of people, not only because it makes those fictional cultures interesting and believable, but also because it provides a modicum of representation, in a way. Thanks for sharing your unique perspective on the expansion c:
It makes me sad that there is so much hate out there for it! I feel like I've been living in a bubble because my husband and I played it together and loved everything about it! I think constructive criticism of media is important, yeah, but if ALL you have to say is negative stuff with no constructive aspect to it, its just a downer. And its very clear to me that (as they always do) the XIV team put a lot of hard work and heart and soul into this expansion. I hope they know that there ARE those of us who appreciate them and loved what they created ;-;
Thank you for this perspective on Dawntrail. As someone who isn't an Indigenous person but has a fascination with learning about Indigenous culture and history I found so much to love with the people of Tural. I especially loved seeing the Hhetsarro and their connection with the Rroneek and drawing parallels to the various Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains and their connection to the wildlife there such as the buffalo. Some parts have been adapted for a fantasy setting, but the writers and world designers all clearly did their homework. I too hope we can see more East US representation in the patches and/or future expacs; one of the first cultures I researched (and what sparked my interest) was the Haudenosaunee (government name Iroquois), since their former territory was around where I grew up as a kid.
The rroneek are my absolute favorite! I haven't played 7.1 yet but from what I understand it does a lot more with the rroneek and Im excited to get around to it haha! I farmed like, four of the rroneek mount horns, because I was just so attached xD
Hi nice to meet you. Hearing your opinions on dawntrail was refreshing to hear I always wanted to hear how a Native American person(since I am a Spanish American) would feel about this expansion.
An amazing review and a really interesting chat about Dawntrail expansion, as well as the personal background you shared-it’s always great to hear about that since your passion really comes through, and it’s so satisfying to listen and learn from you, even though I’m not a Final Fantasy player. Honestly, everything you talked about sounds so interesting. If you ever get the chance, I’d love to hear more about your favorite hobby, rebinding books. I stayed until the very end out of curiosity about your thoughts and theories-I’m immune to spoilers if I don’t know the full, full context! But thanks for the warning!
Thank you so much!! And I actually do plan to make a couple videos about book rebinding! :D That's very reassuring because I was worried about making them, thinking noone would find them interesting but I will definitely make them now knowing at least one person might enjoy them! ^-^
I have Blackfoot and Mohegan from my mother's side so I found the inspirations interesting in this exansion for sure especially the Miqo'te tribe in Shaaloani. I would really like to see even more quests/lore from them personally.
I'd assumed we were going to meracydia next expansion but you're right, since we haven't seen any blue mage stuff yet we probably aren't done with Tural. We also have the field zone which will be in Shades' Triangle so probably pirate themed. Alexandria is from the ninth reflection, and since Living Memory is there it's probably not completely devoid of aether. Hopefully we will get more on that in the next expansion too. Thanks for the video, it was a good watch
I thought we were going to Meracydia for THIS expansion tbh (obviously, up until they announced it was in Tural haha), and I still think very strongly that Meracydia will be a major location in a future expansion, why else would Emet have mentioned it, ya know? ^^
Blue Mages are mentioned in the Wachumekimeki quests, specifically the *Fishing* section. But us actually going to their area is going to have to be done in a way that does not infringe on the progression of events during the Blue Mage questline because some players are undoubtedly going to unlock Blue Mages only AFTER that point in MSQ, if it happens at all.
The entire wachumeqimeqi fishing questline is all about Blue Mages, which I loved! I think I did mention that in the video, but if I didnt, I did play through it! I've done some of the BLM questline but tbh I suck at the game, I mostly play for the story and the gathering ^^' so I got stuck and couldnt progress anymore in the quest because Im just bad at the carnivale xD
Damn this is cool! It's nice to see an in-depth look at how the adaptation handled its inspiration. Actually learned some cool stuff, and I'll be honest, probably gonna come back here for some cliff notes when I start world building one of my own settings.
Before the expac dropped, one of my big speculations was that the "City of Gold" was going to be a "City of BLUE Gold", a city of Ceruleum, and that we were going to be protecting the ceruleum fields of the Blue Mages. I'm not convinced that I was entirely wrong, either. Because while Solution Nine runs on Electrope and not Ceruleum... maybe Ceruleum will be part of the solution for the future of the city. Maybe not, because it is, at its core, similarly unsustainable as a power source. And I *love* the pointed criticisms of lifestyles and cultures that are, at their foundations, unsustainably supported.
Heya! Great vid~ Love to see the perspectives of other natives regarding the expansion. I myself am Mexica (Aztec) and Onyata'a:ka (Oneida), so there were a ton of details that were made much more obvious to me right off the bat. Zoraal Ja, at the very least design wise, is very clearly based off of the Mexica god of war Huitzilopochtli. This in turn definitely skewed my perception of the story long term, as them placing a character designed after one of the four Tezcatlipoca in such a prominent position was both cool and concerning, especially with later actions taken by the character in question. I have a love/hate relationship with the expansion atm, cuz on one hand, certain things were nailed right on the head when it came to representation. On the other, it felt like a lot of the deities of my own people were villified through the story, which didn't really sit right. Curious to see where things go with the rest of the expansion! Also, the symbol of Azem being a sun on the hourglass key in question stood out to me, as the sun is directly tied to cycles of creation in the Mexica religion. A potentially accidental correlation, but a cool one nonetheless.
Thank you for your perspective!! I specialize in mostly my tribe's history/southeastern US cultures in general, which is why I didnt try to go in depth on the representation for southern Tural (because I dont know enough haha), so its really cool to hear someones opinion that actually knows/is from there!!
Oh thank god, some Dawntrail positivity. TH-cam for some reason thinks I hate Wuk Lamat when it’s the opposite - she’s basically a shonen protagonist, of course I adore her! Need to fix my algorithm and commenting helps this too. /o/
Really glad YT threw this video into my feed, love hearing your perspective on DT! I've been playing since basically ARR launch and I loved the expansion, I definitely fell into the camp of loving Lamat'yi from minute one so that helped but it was just great fun. I don't think it quite topped ShB/EW for story but learning about all the different cultures was a joy and its contemplations on death, memory, and existence were excellent. LM might well be my favourite final zone yet. I did replay all of the MSQ over the last year or so, so I can understand why people who maybe havent played since EW came out might have wanted a higher pace, but I love the slow build, especially as it seems like we'll be in zoomy town again soon. [Spoiler Town] I gotta believe the key is, well, the key to the future. It might not be until 7.4 that Y'sh gets her hands on it but I feel like what starts as a sojourn back to the First will grow into a reflection-hopping adventure to try and prevent some new universe-wide issue that's sprung up in the wake of Zodiark's fall and us silencing the Endsinger's song. Maybe the other Zodiark redlections all start to go haywire in different ways (like we saw with the Thirteenth) and that's a driving force for our adventure? Either way I can't wait and yes, I hope Krile and Erenville both get the chance to come along. Thanks for an awesome video! And I love your look, very cute outfit. 😊
Thank you so much!! I agree that I think the key will lead us to other reflections and I’m so excited to see where that takes us! And I also really hope Krile and Erenville play big roles in the future too, I’ve gotten so attached to them both!!
A couple interesting notes: Yak T'el is 100% the Yucatan Peninsula. Both are dotted with cenotes, and Xibruq pibil is a reference to a Yucatec Mayan dish called Cochinita pibil (I found it interesting that cochinita means "baby pig" which is what's used in the dish, while Pibil refers to the cooking in an underground oven called a piib, so Xibruq pibil keeps the pibil part while changing the first word to reference the Ibruq meat) I've had several people I know mention Shaaloani reminds them of a specific place they know. For me, it's visiting family in Nevada, when I first entered Shaaloani I remarked "sure is Nevada in here". I really liked how slow the first half of the story was, and how it wasn't centered on us, but I feel like in the second half (specifically after the reappearance of Zoraal Ja) we should have stepped in and taken charge more, and that Krile and Erenvile should have taken center stage much more strongly. Perfect amount of Wuk-centric story in the first half, too much in the second.
Meanwhile, I see Shaaloani and I think that they made the Cinema Version of Texas, specifically West Texas and I'd probably widen that out to the Four Corners area of the American Southwest which is New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado with Nevada, Oklahoma, and West Texas as a bonus. My FC took to calling it "Texas at Home".
I fear they wrote too large a character for dear Lamaty'i, and struggled to fit the rest of the game around her, if not even to fit her at all into the constraints they had to work with. I believe that's a big part of how Dawntrail can be so divisive: there truly is a lot to love for those who can push past the surface-level jank and still appreciate what they were going for, whereas players who are turned away by the presentation stumbles never get to enjoy the juicy core underneath
Right?? They really tried to combine a lot of elements of the south/southwest in the US and as someone who grew up in that area, I absolutely love it haha. I completely rewrote my characters backstory to be from there too because I love it so much
Thank you! Finally someone who appreciates how we get to be the older experienced adventurer helping a fledgling hero make a name for herself. Wuk Lamet being a cringy inexperienced hero just trying to do the best she can without knowing how to be one yet and looking to us for help is amazing. She really is a stand in for us in ARR while we as the scions lead a new generation. Its an amazing sendoff to everything we have been through and a much earned reprieve from the world ending chaos. Obviously the next villain needs to humble us greatly and set us back to being weak in comparison so we have a challenge but this expansion was supposed to be a small scale story between the end of a 10 year story and the start of the next. I absolutely loved Dawn Trail and its honestly my favorite expansion so far, I've been playing since patch 2.2 of ARR, as well. From the in depth and realistic look at the cultures of the new world and the type of story it was trying to tell to the outstanding dungeon, raid, and trial design that is easily some of if not the best so far. I don't care if the dialogue was cringy its a final fantasy game they all are super cringy its half the charm. It was an amazing expansion and the overexaggerated hate it gets blows my mind I cant wrap my brain around 90% of the complaints people have thrown at it since launch.
Omg, right??? I loved that we got to step into the mentor role and be there for her, just like others have done for us throughout the story. It really all came full circle and I cried a lot haha
@lorekeepermeerah I understand some people just want maasive epic stories like ShB or EW but Final Fantasy has always been about personal connections more than anything.
I agree! My favorite thing about it is how emotionally and sentimentally connected I feel to the characters. No other game has ever managed to get me THIS emotionally invested haha. And honestly I feel like the second act of DT was very much similar in vibes to SHB and EW, but maybe thats just me? ^^'
I’m an anthropology major (granted I’m in a huge hiatus from my AA degree…) but DT is my second favorite expac behind SHB, I understand a lot of the issues and I do have stuff myself that are a bit iffy on the story and some beats… However, oh my god I ADORED the cultural representation in the expansion, it’s not my forte, and I’m certainly not from any portrayed. But having visited my grandparents who current live in Albuquerque, Shaaloani to me looks straight up like the flatlands and prairies of the higher areas in New Mexico and some areas between Utah and Colorado where my dad is from like Tender Valley is almost practically Mesa Verde like HELLLO?!? It’s awesome what they’ve done and I could gush even more, but I won’t and I absolutely need to do more research into these places to have a proper conversation Take care o7
It has been confirmed that Alexandria came from the 9th reflection. I already made that connection from the very beginning, cause it seemed to be a theme with all the reflections that we've visited so far, that these are all tied to their respective Final Fantasy game.
@@Poldovico the first is a re-telling of The Warriors of Light, returning Light to their Crystals/Orbs (that's also why its denizens were so iffy about that term) and defeating a great evil, that was about to plunge the world into darkness. But by doing so they threw the balance of light and dark into jeopardy, and many years later (in the 1st) inadvertently causing the Wave of Light to swallow up the reflection. Also the 1st being the first FF game is also supported by the fact that Norvrandt is Eorzea's mirror on the First, unaffected by the Source's Calamities. So it literally is the "in uinverse" first iteration of all 13+1 (our game)'s worlds There is also Elidibus literally taking on the form of THE Warrior of Light, that "saved" the world in FF1 and him talking about how he had taken on the role of either many Heroes or Villains in many worlds.
Charming video. Shame the only part of Dawntrail I disliked was well your fav zone. The wild west bore this Canadian to tears until we got to the train. But I also super adored the weaver/leatherworker/carpenter quest because the lose of history is what breaks my heart and well Canada and its First Nations yeah that history must not be forgot. Cute vtuber model. I bet it was a world Emet and team was prepping to rejoin but we kinda offed them before they got to far so things went nuts without them. Side note I balled my eyes out when Wuk Lamat lost her papa. She may not be in my top 10 cast of 14 but she is why this took third place in expansion behind Endwalker and the king Heavensward.
Aaah. A video with no negative commenters about one of my favorite expansion ever. Can I stay abit? The world outside is just full of negativity and full of clout chasers/zepla's lamb
Stay as long as you like! 💖 hot take maybe, but I m not a huge fan of zepla haha. Shes just not my cup of tea. And I honestly don’t understand where all the hate for DT is coming from, like I can *kinda* understand the criticism that ‘we weren’t the center of the attention the whole time’, but that didn’t bother me at all, especially after Endwalker haha, and that critique just feels sorta… whiny? 😅 idk
@@lorekeepermeerah no no. I understand what you are trying to say with this (sorry, english isn't my first language) From my point of view. After all that "end of the world" vibe we got from endwalker, I like the fact that in DT we are being more like a mentor and a pillar of growth, while folowing the development of said character. Adding all that, our character aren't doing nothing either! So I'm satisfied with the story as it is. Light toned while settong the stage for the next hurdle. So yeah... my opinions are close to yours and most of the viewer here 😁
Honestly I'm very biased in saying that emet-selch's voice in ShB and his quips and how gut wrenching going through it keeps it at the top, but DT was a needed palette cleanser - I loved the orange cat energy of Lamaty'i and I still struggle finding where people so much dislike her voice or her saying papá (although her saying ₛₚₕₑₑₙₑ was funny but I'm glad they re-recorded that scene to have more impact).

I’m an anthropology major (granted I’m in a huge hiatus from my AA degree…) but DT is my second favorite expac behind SHB, I understand a lot of the issues and I do have stuff myself that are a bit iffy on the story and some beats…
However, oh my god I ADORED the cultural representation in the expansion, it’s not my forte, and I’m certainly not from any portrayed. It’s awesome what they’ve done and I could gush even more, but I won’t and I absolutely need to do more research into these places to have a proper conversation
Take care o7
It has been confirmed that Alexandria came from the 9th reflection.
I already made that connection from the very beginning, cause it seemed to be a theme with all the reflections that we've visited so far, that these are all tied to their respective Final Fantasy game.
I don't see that so much with the First and Thirteenth, though.
So it literally is the "in uinverse" first iteration of all 13+1 (our game)'s worlds
There is also Elidibus literally taking on the form of THE Warrior of Light, that "saved" the world in FF1 and him talking about how he had taken on the role of either many Heroes or Villains in many worlds.
@@wight4991 The reflections are not numbered chronologically, though. Every non-rejoined reflection is unaffacted by the Source's calamities.
That was exactly why I wasn't really comfortable being like, yes, 100 percent this is the ninth haha!
pretty cool to see a native vtuber. I'm also native myself, and will definitely be giving a sub.
Thank you for this c:
Charming video. Shame the only part of Dawntrail I disliked was well your fav zone. The wild west bore this Canadian to tears until we got to the train. But I also super adored the weaver/leatherworker/carpenter quest because the lose of history is what breaks my heart and well Canada and its First Nations yeah that history must not be forgot.
Cute vtuber model.
I bet it was a world Emet and team was prepping to rejoin but we kinda offed them before they got to far so things went nuts without them.
Side note I balled my eyes out when Wuk Lamat lost her papa. She may not be in my top 10 cast of 14 but she is why this took third place in expansion behind Endwalker and the king Heavensward.
omg right, that scene hit so close to home for me as someone who has also lost a parent.
Aaah. A video with no negative commenters about one of my favorite expansion ever.
Can I stay abit? The world outside is just full of negativity and full of clout chasers/zepla's lamb
Stay as long as you like! 💖
hot take maybe, but I m not a huge fan of zepla haha.
I understand what you are trying to say with this (sorry, english isn't my first language)
From my point of view.
So yeah... my opinions are close to yours and most of the viewer here 😁
"The Government names" booo.
"Yeaahhhh, we are just gonna adjust your names cause its easier for us"
Yep lmao 😭 they didn’t just do it to our tribe names either lol they did it to our individual and family names too. Messed up
