Hubert Figuière not a lot of people realize that you can try flying a helicopter at any flight school. Just call them up and say you want to do a familiarization flight to see if it’s something you’d like to pursue.
My husband is a commercial helicopter pilot. He had an accident 6 years ago. Engine failure over a mountain peak and he auto rotated into a wilderness area. He survived and walked away from the wreckage. I think what saved him was practice practice, safety courses, training with other amazing pilots. Calm cool and collective. Everything is dangerous, but that’s why you train and take safety incredibly serious. Love R44s great machines!!
I love how your B-roll is a perfect mixture of 120fps slow motion and a wide variety of shots! It's like the perfect balance of Peter McKinnon mixed with Casey Neistat!
I grew up in Orange County, CA, and I still volunteer when possible at the Lyon Air Museum in John Wayne Airport, so I'm familiar with a few of the local aviation hot spots. Not a pilot, but I'm an avgeek at heart. Even got married at Planes of Fame at Chino where Flo's is, so your uncle knows his stuff. You never leave Flo's without having a slice of pie. The warbird group you ran across is The Collings Foundation. They travel across the country with their B-17 (909), B-24 (Witchcraft), B-25 (Tondelayo), and P-51 (Tolouse Nuts). They'll actually be stopping by Lyon this coming weekend. Great group of people to work with. Thank you for giving them a visit and supporting living history. My wife and I are fans of the two of you, and watch your new episodes together when they come out. She can attest how much I fan-boyed when I instantly knew it was KCNO you flew into and when the B-17 showed up. Thanks again for another great video!
Mvlonewolf144 that’s amazing! We stopped at John Wayne but I didn’t film it. It’s uncle bob’s old home airport. Thanks for the support and glad this one hit home for you!! Let us know if those warbirds are coming by Buffalo, NY at any point 😂 I missed their last flight and feel like I missed a once in a life time opportunity!
Its so weird seeing these older videos, your guys presentation is so much more comfortable and genuine now. There’s a weird, generic youtube voice that so many people use. Also great info on the video.
Loved the quote “When I look at accidents, it’s almost never about skill, it’s almost always about judgement.” - Kurt Robinson Change the word accidents to failures (or mistakes) and that's a commentary on life in general!!
Hi, as a physician what made you pursue flying? Did you always dream of flying? Did you learn to fly during your residency? I am a medical doctor to and love aviation.
I used to fly in Barons, King airs, Mooneys and I used to fall asleep within minutes while the guys did their IR training and night flight training. Only one that was more fun was the Citation but when we were out in the BE-105 I enjoyed every moment. Now that was fun and showed me a helicopter is so much more fun, well that and the helicopter I was normally flying in was the police helicopter on our base.
Great video, Chris. Thanks for sharing! My nine years in the Marine Corps afforded me the "opportunity" to travel "back seat" by hecilopter on a few occasions. You know, the kind that leak hydraulic fluid during the entire flight. Which, apparently, is a good thing according to the crew chief. They like to tell you that if it's not leaking we've got problems. I appreciate your perspective and thoughts on what we consider dangerous in our everyday lives and how we may let it affect our actions. It's good to challenge the notions of safety and security to step outside our shell and, well, live. Cheers!
Ronald Tibbs its all about balance IMO, I always try to frame things from the perspective of risk:benefit. And hydraulic fluid leaks in an R44 would definitely not be normal 😂
Leaving my problems on the ground, and thinking about only what’s around me in the air (in a hot air balloon for me), is one of my favorite aspects of flying. It doesn’t matter how challenging of a flight it turns out to be if conditions change mid flight, its still my place of solitude, and it satisfies my soul. If you guys are ever in the Metro Detroit area (Michigan), you should DM me, especially if you’ve never been on a hot air balloon flight before!
Always learning and improving our skills, the Robinson safety courses came about by Frank Robinsons concern over fundamental safety aspects of his machines handled by owners getting to grips with relatively low rotor inertia with critical autorotation timing, especially on the R-22 as opposed to heavier helicopters, however the market is now being challenged and safety addressed with other excellent designs such as Gumbai,I think your answer on the safety of helicopters is a fair one given the variables of operation, one thing is for sure and that is flying skills need constant honing for the private helicopter pilot.
So many statistics! I've flown quite a few hours in a CH-53 while stationed in the air force. Nothing like dangling your feet out the door when you're 100 feet off the Atlantic Ocean! Was that a Beachcraft Bonanza that Uncle Bob flies? You know the nickname of that airplane right? Beautiful California coastline footage!
I was in LA ( I'm from New Zealand) in early May, and was told they had stopped doing tours due to workload at the time, which was really disappointing.
I would for sure. I have lol. If my pursuit of a filmmaking career didn't pan out I was going to fall back on pilot...but luckily for my mom and her stress levels I've had a pretty good career as an editor in films/tv series. That said LOVE helicopters. I would say they are much more difficult to fly than their fixed wing counterpart. Autorotations can be pretty nerve wracking and the loss of the tail rotor is pretty much unrecoverable when the main rotor goes un-countered. That B-17 though! Those old warbirds i'll never get enough of. Nice video Chris!
Mark Holtze I only have rotary wing experience so I can’t comment other than I would way rather be in a helicopter than a fixed wing 😂 With a tail rotor failure in forward flight, you should stay facing forward because the vertical stabilizers will weather vane you in the correct direction. Roll off throttle for a full down auto to land and you won’t yaw as the torque will have been removed. Loss of tail rotor on a hover just roll off throttle to stop the yaw and then let it settle and cushion on with collective. They were offering flights in the warbirds! I missed the last flight though 🙁
Beauty mate thanks so much for the additional EXPERIENCED context! Helicopters have always been something i've been drawn to, mastery of the craft is quite exceptional as well. The amount of control pilots have over the craft is amazing. I was lucky enough to go up in the Lancaster bomber that flies out of Hamilton Airport just out of Toronto. The aviation museum is there, we were doing a shoot for a doc series that needed some live action aerials so I was in there shooting some super 8mm film. Loud as hell, cramped as hell (as you saw) but amazing experience. I can't imagine having to be at altitude on a long range bomber mission in one of those things with the walls of fighters they would face.
Mark Holtze I know right!! The bomb bay area was literally open on both sides with a thin plank to walk on down the center. Imagine being at altitude 😳
It was hard to tell from your half second cuts of the shots of the B-17, but that appears to be Nine-O-Nine, the lady that crashed in October. A longer cut of any video you have from your time with her would be greatly appreciated!
Awesome video, keep up the great work! I wonder how much of the Australian statistic bias is based upon cattle mustering in the outback where pilots spend much more time below 100-200 feet at very slow speeds.
“When you’re flying, all your problems are on the ground and all you care about is what’s in the air.” -Kurt Robinson Maybe that’s the reason why I love skydiving!!!
Super cool video! What made you decide to become a helicopter pilot over a fixed wing pilot? Given that you have an uncle who is a fixed wing pilot I would have assumed you'd pursue that route of flight.
Helicopters give you unrivaled flexibility. You can land on anything from remote creek beds to rooftops to mountaintops. Fixed wings generally are restricted to airports which didn't really interest me. It was actually my curiosity with aerodynamics of helicopter flight that initially piqued my interest and I just thought they were the most amazing machines. After a while I was just like screw it, I want to fly them!
Helicopter is the LAST thing on this planet that I’m boarding! Leicesters owner 2018 Kobe 2020 Absolutely hate it. It seems like every month I read about helicopters that crash somewhere in the world
Chris how do you feel after spending like 5-10 min on setting up your hair and applying products and then getting hat-hair (or on this case helmet hair)? I always have to style my hair after showering and i ALWAYS avoid anything that'll disturb my volume (like hats, helmets etc) and then having flat hair laying on your head like a bowl cut haha. Enlighten me as i also have straight/asian hair :(. Great video btw i'm just gonna drop out of college and fly planes now lolol seems so mesmerizing
zarakVG hahaha I have used probably 50 different products and my favorite and go to product now is KMS messing cream. It’s repositionable so a quick hand through afterwards and you’re usually good, provided your hair doesn’t get matted down against its natural direction or whatever. Then you’ll get a permanent alpha alpha for the day 😂
Just came over from peters channel! Dude the colors in this video is 🔥🔥 do you do all the colorgrading manually or do you remember whos LUT you were using for this one? (More specifically, the shots with you near the cliff)
Yes, you need to have a special aviation medical certificate which has to be renewed between 6 and 60 months, depending on the age of the person and which class of certificate is required.
Well I wouldn't exactly quote the owner of Robinson as the sage of all helicopter involved training and safety. He has some divergent interests when it comes to the safety and build of his own helicopters.
100% true, but it’s his sentiment I’m agreeing with. That’s why I went to other resources for hard numbers. The flip side is he also has a vested interest in keeping his customers as safe as possible, as any changes in regulation or policy due to crash(es) could drastically affect his business.
I flew in a helicopter once. It was old with no doors and wrap around glass like a mash helicopter. I felt very insecure in it. I feel a lot better even in small planes.
Is it safe? 🙈 Autorotation...then you have that “VORTEX RING STATE”, ya sounds evil🙈😱 then there’s that thing with wind cancelling out the torque effect thingy from your tail rotor🥴
They should invent safety parachutes for flying machine like planes and helicopters , i dont know why some doesnt come with the idea yet , they will make a fortune out of this
As someone said, helicopters are motorbikes of the sky. They are so unsafe. Unless you work in the military or an oil ring, I would never recommend going in one if you value your life. Maybe to try it once would be acceptable but one with two pilots and two engines. Also one that is serviced regularly. Also visibility must be excellent and use one in a Western country. I am UK based. This is just my personal opinion.
Helicopters scare the S***t out of me, a unstable machine with all those moving close tolerance parts vibrations and circling an oil leak, there is so much to go wrong here
Walking across the street can be dangerous. Idiots run red lights everywhere and hit pedestrians. Live life to the fullest possible. You never know when your last day on earth will be.
Would you ever fly a helicopter?
Nope, terrified of heights!
Yes. Teach me 🚁
Yes!!! I have to get those sick aerial shots of NYC 😭🙏🏻
I wish....

Nathan VARIO Mountain thanks so much! That’s a nice compliment! ❤️❤️
I spent this whole video worried Chris was going to fall off that cliff. Helicopters are dangerous, but so are rocky drop-offs, man!
I was too
Right?? Me too lol it was giving me anxiety

What did u have to do getting transport Canada Hellicopter license then moving to the US. Did u have to take the FAA tests at all
Rolls Royce turboshaft engines in the hangar, when you getting the R66? Or just edit in turbine starts sounds in yours.

When you are starting up, do hand signals for engine start. Just like top gun.

How much money did you spent overall for your pilot license

You can only postpone your death, because death is inevitable.
INS Whisky I’d rather postpone it
Staying @ the Ramada is the easiest when going to the Safety Course. Can’t beat the included breakfast!
Nice color look
I've always wanted to fly planes and drive motorcycles (yet helicopters and even cars have always scared me)!
The bonanza or the "V tailed doctor killer" as they are affectionately known. Be careful!
when you randomly stumble across a video of chris in your hometown... 🤯
FAA says its 27 times as dangerous as driving. Keep that maintenance schedule. We like you.
One of the few places I don't mind seeing a No Drone Zone sign

I got lost in the stats at about 5:00 and stopped caring how dangerous flying a helicopter is.
Where was this? You could have visited me in good ole' Fresno!
P.S. I thought Mavy died but, you got some sick drone shots in this.
Torrance!
Oh ok, you're pretty far away. :(
6:43 well said Chris!!

Interesting
13:25 Bell no, Robinson. 😁🚁
It actually looks more dangerous you walking on the edge of that cliff...hence the question "is walking dangerous"?
Oh that's so cool. Do you think you'd be a helicopter pilot full-time if you weren't a doctor?
AronBagel interesting question, really not sure! I do know that making hobbies a profession can very easily ruin a hobby so tough to say!
Stick with being a Doctor. You will make more money in the long run. I'm a 20 year helicopter pilot.
Who’s here because of Kobe ?
Helicopters scare the S***t out of me, a unstable machine with all those moving close tolerance parts vibrations and circling an oil leak, there is so much to go wrong here
The bottom line is its more dangerous. If its even 1% more dangerous Im not doing it.
More dangerous than what? What are you comparing it too?
Walking across the street can be dangerous. Idiots run red lights everywhere and hit pedestrians. Live life to the fullest possible. You never know when your last day on earth will be.
Why do helicopter pilots wear a helmet and airplane pilots usually don't?
Mmmm I love helicopters. The convenience far outweigh the dangers.
I hate the music choice for this otherwise awesome video. It does not fit thematically
85 times more dangerous than a car. That says it all. 03:56.
Helicopters look beautiful but I hate the sound of them though.
Great vlog! Sex is dangerous because it requires judgment and skill! Turgburglar
I mean yeah those are all different modes of transportation, they're different things, but death is all the same. #KobeOut
Freakin' SKY BLENDERS!!!
helicopter are dangerous
you even haven't mention most dangerous things in life like marriage or taking mortgage

First 2 minutes of this video is completely unnecessary. And you lost me at ketchup and eggs.
Here after kobes death :/
