Cinematic platformer games have always fascinated me since the Prince of Persia. Out of This World, Flashback, and Blackthorne were favourites of mine during the 16bjt era. I was always looking for more but had to make do with games that were similar in some aspects like fluid animation and some level designs. That’s how I found games that met my need such as the Judge Dredd movie game on the SNes and Genesis. Two other Genesis games that I came across and also fascinated me with their cinematic style were Generations Lost and Pocahontas. Thanks for the review, man.
Hey Sega Lord X, I hope all is well with u. I rarely comment on things, but I felt compelled to today. I subscribed to your channel quite a long time ago, I wanna say that you had around 28000 subscribers at that time. It wasn't a hard decision to make. Whenever u talk about these games and systems, i truly feel like I'm suddenly back in 1993 with a good friend, talking about the experiences we had with some of these games that were as close to actual magic as anyone can get, and i just can't express what that means to me. You truly deserve the success, u certainly worked your ass off for it. Just want u to know that you are appreciated beyond measure. Thank you,, sir. Until next time, SLX.
They made a game based on Pocahontas? I guess if Lion King and Toy Story got a game, then anything is possible. Didn’t even know that Beauty and the Beast or Little Mermaid had games at all
@@gundamzerostrike Which of course I think was true all the way up let's see at least to Lilo and stitch. And I guess there have been a number of Pixar and other related movies like Bolt but it's gotten very inconsistent in the last couple years. I feel like for the most part they're over it if it isn't like a mobile game at this point.
I remember playing the Game Boy version when I was a teenager and I enjoyed what was on offer there long before I knew the Mega Drive version even existed. In fact, I only just learned five minutes ago that there was a PAL release so now I'm wondering how it managed to elude me back then. In any case, it's a fun game all the same. :)
Wow I really approve of the ideas of this game. Instead of making it a horrible generic collectathon platformer they made Pocahontas a sidescrolling cinematic platform. That's something I can get behind on.
I mean I can't remember exactly when it really got bad but I would say sometime in the previous two generations they really got lazy and now it's pretty much mobile games for their movies if anything. A lot of the 3D stuff was painfully mediocre at best or just playing bad and unplayable at worst.
Most of them were. There were a few absolutely atrocious ones though. All the ones SLX mentioned we're truly some of the worst you could come across. I'm sure there were more but I can't remember off the top of my head.
I really wish that the team that gave us this or even Aladdin's team would have made an official game for The Hunchback of Notre Dame. That very obviously melarkets itself towards platforming very easily with Quasimodo in particular having some very epic and dramatic stage design, but I also see where there could have been room for other genres, such as a beat-em-up stage based around Esmeralda escaping the guards during the Feast of Fools, or Phoebus fighting off the soldiers during the War for Notre Dame.
I randomly started playing this the other day for the first time. I lost two hours into its beautiful graphics & surprisingly complex puzzles. I've never even seen the movie, but the game... I love it!
It looks amazing for a genesis game. The graphics and soundtrack looks and sounds good. I love the presentation and it’s simple platform gameplay in this Pocahontas game. Don’t know why this game didn’t even came as part of the Disney collection.
Funcom did a lot of different games in the 90s. I googled the games they did and Holy shit they stayed busy. From extreme sports to point and click style games. I'm sure Disney was probably happy with Pocahontas because it was great looking and kid-friendly. I like the game for its change of pace and animation. I think they gave Shiny a run for their money, but didn't make a huge adventure game. Great video SLX. Always wondered how you liked Pocahontas. Catch you next time.
Godlike pixel-art. Definitely one of the prettiest games of the console. Soundtrack is easily recognizable as well. Developers did a stellar job overall. The choice of making a more puzzle oriented game is fine, I think it makes it more approachable for kids and not all games have to be the same.
Always saw this game in Blockbuster but never gave it a chance. Odd, because I always played the Disney games, but this one just never caught my attention like that.
I never knew the Pocahontas Video Game went up to $100.00 on eBay recently until now! (I still remember my family playing it and would have owned it as a youngling since I remember seeing a promo for it in the VHS tape of a Goofy Movie!)
This is one of the few games I wish they made a Sega CD version with CD quality music. Possibly even extra stages. Sure, we all hate when they did that but I'd allow it in this case. With a few exceptions the Disney games had a problem of the visuals looked amazing but the sound and gameplay was off to not good. Gargoyles and Pinocchio come to mind. I hear ya about trying to get into Disney movies in the 90s after growing up on He-Man, Voltron, Transformers and G.I. Joe (in my personal case seeing Vampire Hunter D at a friend's house via his older brother). I will admit I liked Aladdin but Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas were a tough sell. B&B I only saw because my baby sister watched it 20 zillion times a day.
I played this game on an emulator, muted the volume, and listened to Joan Baez instead. That's pretty appropriate considering that Baez sounds pretty similar to Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas' singing voice actor). Also, Baez is likely the most popular female folk musician out there.
I picked up Aladin today and while I was out at my local retro store I saw pocahontas there, then I get home and see you made a video about today.......are you watching me?
I remember renting this game, making it...relatively far, I'm one that can very quickly adapt to/perceive mechanics. In hindsight, this is very much og Prince of Persia-esque, mechanically. I don't remember how far I made it without cheats, but I think it was about halfway through before I shamefully threw in the towel and put in the password for the last stage - which after a few tries, I did manage to beat. This isn't a horrible game by any means, just one you have to take time to learn, and some stages can be monotonous, switching between characters and slowly progressing. Not the best, not the worst, tmv~
I always loved these Disney Genesis games. The visuals and animation were some of the best on the Genesis. I missed this one since it was so late in the system's life cycle
I love these types of games and this one is probably my third favorite of 16 bit era behind Flashback and Blackthorne. It’s even more well animated than Flashback in some ways.
Mickey Mania was one of the last game I owned for my Genesis; I rented most of my games at the time. Disney games were awesome in this era, just like their movies.
I was going to say ‘so good if you find it cheap…?’ Then you said how much it goes for! I’ve got it on my handheld, I’ve never looked at it though so I’ll give it a try one afternoon! Thanks !
I know many people at the time were still playing the Genesis/Mega Drive, but I still feel that this, Toy Story and Pinocchio NEEDED to be on the Saturn and PlayStation! I would’ve been fine even if they were the same as their 16 bit counterparts just with CD soundtracks and movie clips! Knowing the Sonic Mega Drive games turned out just fine on the Saturn as part of Sonic Jam, this and the other 2 games I just mentioned would also have worked on the Saturn! Pinocchio believe it or not was also in development for the 32X, they could easily have carried development of that version over to the Saturn or maybe even the Nintendo 64! Sadly, the PlayStation didn’t get a Disney game that’s not a PAL exclusive until Hercules came along 2 years into its life, and the ONLY Disney release the Saturn did get was a Japan only 2 in 1 disc with Castle of Illusion and QuackShot… in 1998!
I love finding out about unusual but decent games for my retro consoles, so thanks SLX. I've got a Megadrive ROM cart with every game (plus Master System too) and the list is endless, so I've not even scratched the surface on the ROMs. Will definitely check this out with my daughters, safe in the knowledge that it's decent and importantly easily beatable.
I really think this may be the best-looking contemporary release on the platform, but I'd be interested to hear other candidates. The music reminds me a lot of Colonization, which is a little damning given that was a General Midi DOS game.

Im just getting into collecting for Sega within the last year...& i only missed the boat by 30+ years 😂😂 (but this is certainly one title that i need in my collection)
Pocahontas derp face right on the box at 1:33 . For a second it made me think this game was going to be a trashfire. I'm kinda shocked it actually looks great.
Im surprised no one ever mentions the screen where meeko is eating an acorn on the continue screen i believe. That animation of meeko is some of the best ive ever seen on a console.
I never like this game though liked the movie the most from my childhood, which of course I liked “Disney’s Aladdin” and “Disney’s The Jungle Book” (both on Sega Genesis) the most.
Best looking game on the genesis. Her spritework appeal & detail was quite literally the best female sprite outside of Capcom Fighting games at the time. Saturn should have gotten a sequel like they did with Earthworm Jim 2
@@maroon9273 Word, that was one of the better looking PS1 games. Back when I was a kid, I found it a bit boring and never really finished it. Later in life, this was a game both me and my were remembered fondly. So, I've fired up the emulator on a cable provider's TV box, connected a relatively decent, but for gaming absolutely dreadful bluetooth keyboard and, well, she gave up quickly and I was forced to win this time around. Honestly, the presentation was amazing and I loved it, even though the keyboard did make it quite a challenge.
Another fantastic video and I couldn’t agree with you more on Pocahontas. It’s a great single run thru and becoming very collectible due to low production run & of course it’s Disney. Kudos
Nowhere near the best sounding. Devilish and Streets of Rage blow this away. But you can make a case for best looking. Especially since it avoids the soft pillow shading, dithering abuse, and poor color choices so many games from the time used.

Played it with my older sister and then i got solo at that time she also played games i liked to play Sega games and she liked to play néo geo games i have got à big collection of Sega games when i was à kid it was actuallyy like one big collection hundrends of them litteraly and the néo geo i couldnt even count them they were too much!!! My favorite game is this one i don t understand why they didnt make a sequel 😢
the game was like a side scroller you might say. but part of it was to stop a war from happening! which kind of fits the movie, but it can get boring after playing a few times!
Just recently discovered how
awesome the ost of TAOBAR on Sega CD
is...it is awesome!!!
Now...time for my SLX vid.
Life is hard and the world is often a cruel place, but these 15 minute journeys with you take a remarkable amount of weariness off my shoulders. To say Thank you seems almost inadequate. You truly deserve the success, u certainly worked your ass off for it. Just want u to know that you are appreciated beyond measure. Thank you,, sir. Until next time, SLX.
Disney had some pretty good games that generation. And the character animations looked amazing.
They made a game based on Pocahontas? I guess if Lion King and Toy Story got a game, then anything is possible. Didn’t even know that Beauty and the Beast or Little Mermaid had games at all
@@gundamzerostrike
Which of course I think was true all the way up let's see at least to Lilo and stitch.
And I guess there have been a number of Pixar and other related movies like Bolt but it's gotten very inconsistent in the last couple years. I feel like for the most part they're over it if it isn't like a mobile game at this point.
You would never see Crusty the Clown put his name on a inferior product!
Least of all the canyonaro.
Lol at that tailspin quip. I liked it as a kid, it was hard as hell but when i got better at it i enjoyed it.
I love the animations in this game. Very high quality, similar to another Disney Genesis game of that era, The Lion King.
Paint with all the colors of the Genesis 🎶
Oh Damn. The whole graphics and aesthetic of this game is simply amazing. Its a wonder I never heard of it.
I always remember fondly the animal spirits mechanic, helping them to learn from them to kick out the invaders
This is Pure Pixel Art!! Thanks for the great review!
I wouldn't have thought that was the gems driver. Maybe it's just better suited to the kind of music
Check out Dune II and Comic Zone for what the GEMS sound driver can do with someone who uses it the way it was intended.
Wow I really approve of the ideas of this game. Instead of making it a horrible generic collectathon platformer they made Pocahontas a sidescrolling cinematic platform. That's something I can get behind on.
I never even knew this game existed. I’m weirdly glad you’re covering it even though I don’t really have an interest in it.
Remember when anything that had the Disney name was always well crafted. Now Disney will slap that name on a pile of poo and call it gold.
I mean I can't remember exactly when it really got bad but I would say sometime in the previous two generations they really got lazy and now it's pretty much mobile games for their movies if anything. A lot of the 3D stuff was painfully mediocre at best or just playing bad and unplayable at worst.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu from the 30s to the late 60s and from 88 to 96 was the best quality stuff Disney ever made.
1:36 I dont know if Pocahontas is a game worth playing but this videos are definitely worth watching! Amazing content! Thanks Lord!
Disney games were great on the genesis
Most of them were.
There were a few absolutely atrocious ones though. All the ones SLX mentioned we're truly some of the worst you could come across. I'm sure there were more but I can't remember off the top of my head.
Thanks for showing this game some love. When I first played it, I was surprised with all the quality put in this game. Definitely a winner to me.
Aladdin, Lion King, Poke-a-hot-ass were the trilogy of Disney movie games we had in our house. Great times.
I love it!
this and sonic the hedgehog 3 are my absolute favorite sega genesis games
I played this w my sister back in the day
Godlike pixel-art.
Jungle Book for the Sega Genesis was a really good game!
I never knew the Pocahontas Video Game went up to $100.00 on eBay recently until now! (I still remember my family playing it and would have owned it as a youngling since I remember seeing a promo for it in the VHS tape of a Goofy Movie!)
Quite amazing graphics, still looks good. 😎👍
Missed opportunity not porting disney games to the sega cd. Another game that would've been ported to the sega cd is kolibri.
@@maroon9273 They did port Mickey Mania but I'm pretty sure that's the only one.
Pocahontas is one of my favorite Disney games, I really like its graphics and especially the music and I still play it.
I played this game on an emulator, muted the volume, and listened to Joan Baez instead. That's pretty appropriate considering that Baez sounds pretty similar to Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas' singing voice actor). Also, Baez is likely the most popular female folk musician out there.
Got this when I was a kid. It was not my favorite game, but I enjoyed it.
I picked up Aladin today and while I was out at my local retro store I saw pocahontas there, then I get home and see you made a video about today.......are you watching me?
Sega Lord sees all.
I doubt I'll ever play this game or purchase it if I find it, but DANG that animation is beautiful!
The color palette of the Genesis was great. This game has excellent graphics and animations.
I remember when I watched this movie in the theater with my aunt, oh man I'm getting old.
I really think this may be the best-looking contemporary release on the platform, but I'd be interested to hear other candidates.
The music reminds me a lot of Colonization, which is a little damning given that was a General Midi DOS game.
Thank you for this, I had no idea the game was this good. Played it with my 5yo son over the weekend and he loved it.
Beautiful 16-Bit graphics. Not surprised of the cart price. This is digital art.
I don't care for games which are basically all puzzles but this game looks amazing. No denying that.
So basically it's Flashback meets Disney. Must give it a go.
If I saw this review back in the day, I would have made this a weekend rental for sure.
This title right here is one of the many reasons why i should have given Sega a chance when i was younger & You have no idea how much i regret it, being from a all Nintendo family. Im just getting into collecting for Sega within the last year...& i only missed the boat by 30+ years 😂😂 (but this is certainly one title that i need in my collection)
The music in this game is so great, I wish I could get it in CD form
Wish the Genesis just kept going all through the 90s. Look how pretty late releases can get!
Wow this one's beautiful and looks surprisingly fun mechanic wise.
The game is absolutely beautiful, I really enjoyed when I was a kid, more like teenager actually, great experience
I have this game on my handheld emulator, I play it from time to time, its a really beautiful game just like the movie was.
Awesome review man!
Pocahontas derp face right on the box at 1:33 .
For a second it made me think this game was going to be a trashfire. I'm kinda shocked it actually looks great.
Weird that in 1996 they went with Genesis exclusivity. No SNES, no Saturn, no PS1. Can’t imagine this selling very much.
Im surprised no one ever mentions the screen where meeko is eating an acorn on the continue screen i believe. That animation of meeko is some of the best ive ever seen on a console.
I never like this game though
liked the movie the most
from my childhood, which of
course I liked “Disney’s Aladdin”
and “Disney’s The Jungle Book”
(both on Sega Genesis) the most.
Best looking game on the genesis. Her spritework appeal & detail was quite literally the best female sprite outside of Capcom Fighting games at the time.
Saturn should have gotten a sequel like they did with Earthworm Jim 2
I wish hercules cinematic game was ported to the saturn.
@@maroon9273 Word, that was one of the better looking PS1 games. Saturn got Legend of Oasis, Herc’s Adventures, and that PS1 title, along with Saturn Pocahontas / Aladdin sequels, would have really gone a long way towards marketing the Saturn in the west.
But I wouldn’t be surprised if Stolar was organizing the Disney exclusives for Sony the whole time he “worked” for Sega of America.
@@AyeYoYoYooo a 32-bit port pocahontas II and alladin and the king of thieves for the ps1 and Saturn would've been great. Hercules the movie ps1 port reminded of Saturn guardian heres. I wish ps1 made more pixel games like hercules during 90s instead saturating the system with forgotten 3D games.
Even sega cd port of alladin return of jafar since the first alladin port was cancelled.
I'm currently rewatching all the Disneys so this is timely :)
Graphics 10/10
Did Darkwing Duck ever get a Genesis release? If not it's pretty surprising, I'd have thought this franchise more than others would have been a great candidate for a game.
Back when I was a kid, I found it a bit boring and never really finished it. Later in life, this was a game both me and my
were remembered fondly.
Kudos
Probably the best looking and sounding game on the system. Oddly
Nowhere near the best sounding. Devilish and Streets of Rage blow this away.
But you can make a case for best looking. Especially since it avoids the soft pillow shading, dithering abuse, and poor color choices so many games from the time used.
9:20 Pocahontas...The first ever recorded instance of someone slipping into The Backrooms.
