    Episode Notes:
    1. There are actually a few different endings here. Some of them have running commentary from the devs that are pretty funny.
    2. In regards to the stand still animations, I let the two games run side by side for 30 mins. Both seem to have routines that are random, and both have a couple the other doesn't. I feel the Sega CD version got shafted here, however. The Genesis animations are faster, more often, and more varied.
    3. Dave Perry did many other games before this, including Cool Spot.
    4. There was a Earthworm Jim HD version for the Xbox 360 and PS3. It did not have the extras form the Special Edition here.
    5. I like the SNES version of this game as well. I think visually its the best of the bunch, but I prefer the Sega CD overall for its music and extras.
    6. The Sega Genesis cartridge was just 24 megabits. Seeing all the animation you'd think it would have been 32.
    7. The Game Boy and Game Gear/SMS versions of this game are nowhere near their 16-bit cousins in regards to quality. Night and day in fact.
    8. There was a PSP remake of this in the works, but it never saw a final release.
    9. This contains the stage Intestinal Distress! that was originally exclusive to the Genesis version.
    10. The music portion of this video has the selections simply labeled by tracks from the CD. I could not find their names anywhere.
    11. I played this differently for the capture than I would on my own. Jim has lots of animations when he gets hit, and I wanted to show that.
    12. I was had a cold while recoding this. You may notice my voice sounds a tad stuffy.

    Lol. I’ve always thought that if a joke needs explanation, it’s not a good one. I called Psycrow a chicken because he wears a yellow space suit. I mean, I said his name in the same sentence, but alas, it seems to have failed. I’ll pin this to hopefully minimize more comments explaining to me that Psycrow is actually a crow.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I guess it depends on how far those enhancements go. Here, the game is literally 95% untouched. You take away the opening, ending and CD music, and it’s a stage that’s the difference. Is that enough? It definitely is gonna be different person to person.

    The best version of the game isn't the SEGA CD release, it's the Windows 95 version! That game is just like the SEGA CD installment but with 2 added features:
    1) - auto saving
    2) - 256 colors (with added smooth visuals, and no background dithering, etc...)
    You don't even need a retro PC to run this. It's now easy to emulate windows 95 through modern emulators or a virtual machine.
    Please share this comment with others or give it a thumbs up so that other's that want to experience the definitive version of this game can do so without resorting to forking out an enormous amount of money or through piracy.

    It has been documented before but the practice of just releasing mostly the same game with CD audio was what held the Sega CD back. Besides the fact that the Sega CD deserved software that would highlight it's unique capabilities the problem with this was that these games were already available for a while on Genesis/SNES and most consumers are not going to pay full price again or even get all that excited about a game that they have already owned and recently put a lot of time into on another console. Having an extended level here and there and making a "definitive edition" just wasn't enough; the Sega CD should have had exclusive installments of these franchises. Instead of developing Sonic CD how about simply making Sonic 3 again and adding in the CD quality rendition of the same music? Nope I'll take Sonic CD as it is. Same notion should have applied to other properties also.

Shiny were experts in 2D well animated platformer, I doubt they would have gotten much ROI by spending 6 more months or so to expand a Sega CD game in that way, still, I'd have loved to have seen it! I remember playing Earthworm Jim on the Super Nintendo.
    I always liked the Game Over screen, music and animation in Earthworm Jim 2.
    And the end in Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 ...... i won´t spoiler it for anyone who never played an Earthworm Jim game.

    Nice review as usual, although I think you made a mistake regarding Jim's idle animations on Mega CD: they are not reduced but expanded, but the animations depend on each level.
    For instance, Level 3 (What the Heck) features all those animations you mentioned that were missing and some others that are not present in the cartridge.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But I argue its still limited because those animations were broken up by stages on the CD, while all of Jim's animations could happen on every stage in the cart version.

    • @parappatherapper4141
      @parappatherapper4141 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SegaLordX yeah, well it depends on the point of view I guess, I like variety and uniqueness depending on each stage though.
      Anyway I really dig the CD soundtrack and new voice samples, along with the password system and extended levels this version is the definitive way to play it. It's not precisely an easy game to complete in one sitting...

    The first game I ever owned where I fully mastered it (completed all difficulties doing them all on one life) after playing the Mega version on the Megadrive mini though I'm amazed I managed it, it's harder than I remember! I'll have to hook up the Mega CD and see it again for myself.

    I know this game has many fans. It has a really strong presentation, but I never could really get into many of its gameplay mechanics or the stage design. That's how it goes sometimes, but it was still interesting to see what changes they made. The first music track highlighted here, "track 11", gave me Technosoft vibes.

    Oh wow, I’ve never seen that 8 bit port... gosh, looks like a nightmare lol but I’m curious. The soundtracks are pretty amazing across the board with the EWJs, then hearing the special edition is really just a quality shock! Like a dream come true. I had a lot of fun covering EWJ 1 & 2 on Genesis from start to finish, those visuals and music will really keep you thinking about it long after setting it down.

    EJSE would have to pause the CD audio to load in additional idle animations, whereas with the cartridge the game can quickly load the animations without pausing the music. I paid more for this Sega CD game than any other, $60 new in store about 25 years ago.

    Aside from the new weapon and stage, there are a few other differences.
    - There's a new sub-stage in New Junk City where Jim jumps out of his suit similar to how he does at the end of What The Heck.
    - A new hidden teleport in Down the Tubes that lets you skip the dreaded tube race section. It also takes you to a new section of Andy Asteroids.
    Other than that it's just a new OST and some pickup placement changes. That being said I still love this version and even though the Genesis has my overall favorite OST, the Sega CD version has my favorite rendition of New Junk City. Also that new stage is pretty cool and atmospheric.

    The first Earthworm Jim I played was Special Edition on the PC. It was around that time Sega had started publishing CD games for the PC (Sega Rally was another one I played on PC long before I ever got a Saturn). They may even have had the PC in mind more than the Sega CD when they made Special Edition, which might explain why they didn't change it up too much.

    Another great vid. Great analysis of a classic. I never played the CD version but I loved Earthworm Jim just the same. You're right though, there's not much graphical improvement even by the Sefa CDs standards. Although in the standing animation tests you show, I notice the frame rate is faster and slightly smoother.

      Not many times we could say that Sega had the superior version of a game that was also on SNES. I loved my Genesis but there was no denying that most multiplatform releases looked, and usually sounded, better on the SNES.

    Nice vid and I haven't played these games, but I bet you're being too pessimistic about the CD version. It reminds me of how people say that Ecco: Tides of Time, on CD, was wrong to have the same special stages as on cartridge (but I love it and I'm glad they kept it). The positive side of such games is that often, people appreciated the CD audio, + other extras, and it was enough for such games to seem acceptable, as enhanced games. Anyways, nice vid, love the Sega CD focus. :)

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1
