2. I really wish that the Sega CD version had been an upgraded version of this. It could have been so much better with improved gameplay, a few more enemies, a better soundtrack, and maybe an extra stage.
3. Funnily enough Blue Sky was also developing an Aladdin title at the same time as this. It was scrapped so they could finish Jurassic Park.
4. Rampage Edition is an entirely new game that picks up where this leaves off. It has its own issues, but the slowdown is gone, and it sounds much better.
5. The ending cinematic is extremely brief. Sega really needed to work on its endings during that time.
6. It sounded like I implied that the password needs to be entered every time to start back where you were. The complaint was intended to be starting over at the beginning of the stage. - เกม
I loved this game. In fact this Thanksgiving I thanked my dad for getting it for me as a kid, but I mention it every year as a joke. The reason was in Middle school I had an open heart surgery and a major heart surgery along with it. I spent a lot of time indoors because I was told it would be too dangerous to play outside after OHS. I’ve had a total of 3 open heart Surgeries in my life and I spent a lot of time on the Sega Genesis. My OHS was right after JP came out in theaters and dinosaurs were all I thought about. We didn’t have much money probably due to the medical bills. One day my dad comes home with a Sega genesis and JP also Sonic came with the system. I thought he had rented it from a Blockbuster or some other rental company but he said no he bought it. It’s a memory that will probably stay with me forever.

This game was so damn real looking when it first came out! We would play in a dark room and freak out every time a Trex would appear lol
This was a great time to be a kid and a Sega fan. It brings back memories of having peak X Men, Sonic and Mortal Kombat mania.
The music was actually really good in this game.
I'd say pretty much yes. Especially the compositions. Perhaps they could do a little better with instruments, use more variety of them, instead of single solo and bass. I bet the Japanese composers would of made it better.

The Visitor Center soundtrack was the most kicking track. I even remember a password to that stage scince 1996 which is CVVNV4HN it baked to my mind like forever.
that's a wild take. as a kid i thought it sounded like a murky turd. it blew my mind because i didn't have a genesis i only had snes. so i got used to the very good music quality on snes, then when i went over to my buddy's house to play this jurassic game i was like wait... is that MUSIC?! i was shocked at how game music could be just a loop of clicking and pulsing sounds with no melody or structure or anything. the music in this game is borderline experimental lol

Same but I do get why anyone would dislike it. As a kid, the tunes were neat but there were definitely better GEMS based tunes
music is great every stage music memorable. saying it was turd his openion. espcialy island theme when map plays makes many chills. its ambiance music like alien isolation gives you dark vibes. today reviewers when looking sega games expecting arcade tones. this adventure game not arcade game. my favorive music on md after sonic and knucles is sparskter game and ı dont see any sega reviewers says sparkster music was amazing. streets of rage 2 music can suck against those.
God, I loved the music. Fair enough its not as pretty as, say, the Streets of Rage ost, but I think it really captures the mood of the game and alot of the time it reflects the environment. For example, it "sounds" like a powerstation or a flowing river. Nevertheless, I loved this game as a wee guy. That last act with the collapsing dino structure was unnecessarily difficult to figure out though - especially if you're 10!
I loved this game as a kid. I still remember when I was 9 years old in 1993, my dad taking me to Kmart on a Friday after school to get this. I was such a huge Jurassic Park fan, (Saw the film in theaters 13 times!) and was so excited to play it. I must have played it over and over again for weeks. I actually have fond memories of some of the music in this game. I love the river rapids levels music.

This game actually scared the crap out of me as a kid. When that T-Rex head burst through the wall in the 2nd level I nearly shat myself. Funny looking back now, it's such a simple sprite with like 3 animation frames but seemed so real at the time!
It's the combination of things- sound, anticipation, scale - that gave it a menacing look.
I'd say scary was the sewer level for me. And volcano. I think this game had the best lava animation.

I still remember seeing this game demoed in a local Toys r' us. I was so blown away by the graphics back then, wishing that I also had a Mega Drive in addition to my SNES.
One of the few games I owned as a kid, I have no idea how I beat both sides as a 5 year old. I don't remember much but I remember liking playing as the Raptor a lot more

Only the raptor ending was tough as heck.
In PAL regions the music was a bit slower, in my opinion it sounded a bit better.
What I loved the most about this game is that it was the only Jurassic Park game of that time that allowed you to play as one of the dinosaurs.
ı dont know bcouse of slows but defintly better than this video ı have pal version and some gameplay better to. he not play properly he try to jump direclly on forest when suppose to wait to jumper on tree end. he not climb electical robes on power plant he try to direclty jump danger area. he also not use raptor properly raptor have diffrent mechnaisc and buttons like high jumps and chicken like low jump need to atension. not just button meshing. its have technige in gameplay. more like his gamepaly using emulator somehnig. that grant drop empyiness never happen my pal game.
Yeah, I'm Australian and I had this game as a kid. The music sounded SO much better in PAL.

This was one of the first video games I ever played and yeah it was difficult at times but I still enjoy playing this game. Just got the Rampage edition recently too.
I use to rent this one alot when I was a kid. And then my mom bought me the Rampage Edition and I never went back to this one again. Rampage Edition is still so much fun to play to this day.
This game and Sonic 2 were my first games that came with my Sega Genesis. The visuals and ambience are gorgeous and a lot of the game seems inspired by the book. This was so much better than the SNES version. I remember kids lining up at the Software Etc at my local mall just to play it on a demo kiosk.
JP and Rampage Edition are both good. I give the first game the edge despite Rampage Edition's better framerate because I like the levels more. Felt like the levels in the first JP game were more involved and had more puzzle elements to them. But the more straightforward design of Rampage Edition can be good if you just want to jump in and blast some dinos. And playing as the Raptor is much better in Rampage Edition.
I prefer Rampage, the game is such an over the top Metal Slug type run and game. You can tell the devs had a lot of fun making it.

when Jurassic Park was huge and I was 7 years old, playing as the raptor was what made me want a Genesis! God bless this game

One thing you didn't mention, you do sort of fight the T Rex, but it's more of an environmental hazard, as usually it's just a head popping out from the background layer, but you can drive it back a bit with grenades to slip past. Not exactly another dino you fight, but sort of, and the experience wouldn't be complete without it.
Back in the day the animation of the T-Rex was one of the coolest things I saw in the system.
also trex can eat you good time and some times hes neck can go long. ı still remember dropped to controler to death. more like alien isolation you dont know when he appear.
C’mon man. This game when we played it as kids was fantastic. I know I’ll always remember and love it.
This game brings back so much memories. Despite having a password I would always strive to play it all in one sitting, it wasn't that long. Eventually I could play through both Grant's and the Velociraptor's campaign in one life. Felt so proud of myself.
This game was great for the time and it still has that retro charm.

I love the little details like 6:30 where the raptors play dead, then wake up and ambush you after you pass by. The first time they did it when I was a child I was genuinely surprised and frightened. Little details like that are awesome videogame storytelling, something so small shows how intelligent the raptors are.
There's a part in the 3rd Power Station level while playing as Grant that a Raptor drops down and chases you. If you tranquilize it near the ladder at the end of the hall, climb the ladder and then pan the camera down to watch it wake up, it will run toward the wall and start climbing it. First time I saw THAT I was like...WTF! Creeped me RIGHT out because it almost seemed like the AI got better out of nowhere.

We would get stuck at the final level of this game for the dumbest reason: we couldn't figure out how to open the doors (hold up standing right next to one).
I think that too me a little bit as well :D
As the Raptor it took me some minutes to figure out that you could open the doors kicking them.

I had nightmares bout that damn T-Rex for months lol.
This was one of the very first games I ever played. It came with the Sega Genesis I got for Christmas in 1993. It proved to be my dad's personal favorite because he liked a challenge and boy howdy did this game deliver on that. The entire layout of this game and every move you have to make is permanently burned into my brain due to the sheer amount of trial and error my 6 year old self went through to beat it. I actually did figure out how to beat the final boss on my own. When I beat the raptor's game and noticed the explosion animation when you kick the base of the dinosaur skeleton to defeat Grant, I assumed it was something similar for Grant's game.
I'll never forget how smart I felt as a kid when I used the password screen in the manual to skip half the game.
6:00 is this an NTSC issue? I don't really recall this being much of an issue for the PAL version (though I do recall the music in the PAL version being of a slightly slower tempo).
PAL here as well, I mostly notice lag in the Pump Station and Volcano levels. But I've gotten so used to it, I'd notice it if it were no longer there :P
I remember getting this when it came out. It was super exciting being a huge dinosaur fan, and playing as the raptor seemed totally off the wall at the time. The rafting stage was so cool and epic. Great graphics too
Back then I thought the music was banging, particularly when Rampage Edition came around it was even more crazy .. I got the ost for both of them and replay them fairly regularly, never get tired of it because the nostalgia takes over. There's one thing that I found now with time compared to games these days is that there was rarely any concept of tutorial levels back then, they just threw you into the game with a "Deal with it" approach, unforgiving (X-Men 2 Clone Wars is a brilliant example of this). Games really like to hold your hand nowadays before they let you get into it huh?
The difficulty curb was both a blessing and a curse back then, not a bad thing but when I find myself replaying some of these old games man do I get frustrated lol, I'm old and it shows. With a modded MD Mini (130 ish games now, much better list~) and now both versions of the MD Mini II (JP & US, because Australia always gets shafted on releases) I have an absolute motherlode of old gems to enjoy.. what a time to be alive. 😉🙂
Dude the main menu music from Rampage Edition is etched in my mind. It’s so badass and aggressive. I took the game case to show and tell in first grade because I loved it so much🤣
I wasn’t a big fan, but I loved the t-Rex doing the “Sega scream.” Of all the creative screams, this was the best.
I couldn’t begin to tell you how many hours I put into this game. I still have my original copy I got for Christmas. One of my favorite games of all time.
This one of the few games I owned for genesis as a kid. It was hard and unforgiving but one of my favorites.

Jurassic Park on the Genesis was one I rented a few times. I remember being put off by Dr. Grant. It may have been a combination of the limited ammo and what I thought was a small amount of life. That said, I had a great time as the raptor, which was much more intuitive to play as.
Off topic, but could anyone imagine a game based on the Super Mario Bros. movie with digitized assets in the same vain as Street Fighter the movie the game?
That idea probably would have died when they tried to capture Bob Hopkins doing jump animations 😅
I am in complete agreement with this review aside from one aspect: the music. I am a huge fan of what is often said to be the best Genesis soundtracks, which is pretty much anything by Yuzo Koshiro. The Revenge of Shinobi and Streets of Rage in particular.
But I love the Jurassic Park soundtrack. It's not a game with any "bangers" by any means, but it has that dark ambient GEMS vibe that just really gives me a certain feeling and takes me back to junior high and the summer nights that I rented this title from my local video store.
The music was done by Sam Powell, and his 1994 soundtrack for Shadowrun on the Genesis is one of my all-time favorites. (In addition to being a great sandbox RPG and a vastly underrated game.) To each their own. 🤘

Your criticisms are 100% correct. But for whatever reason my family loved this game when we rented it, and we got it soon after. The goal is to memorize the levels and eventually master them to the point that you don't lose lives, and minimize damage. As for the last boss as Grant? We figured it out eventually but it was extremely frustrating.
You're right to point out everything wrong with the game, but still encourage people to try it. There's something about this game that can click with you, and make you want to master it.
The other thing I remember is that the sewer level as the raptor has a spot with a nearly impossible small platform that is a brick wall to progress until you figure out exactly how to jump on to it. Seems like the kind of thing Sega wanted in their games to keep it from being beaten over a weekend rental.

I borrowed this from a friend for a weekend as a kid. This was by far the scariest game I'd ever played. I got the same feeling like I do now playing something like Alien Isolation
such a brilliant platformer and shooter as Grant and the raptor. finally hitting the end at 5 years old was frustrating bc I couldn't figure out how to kill Grant. killing the raptor bosses was easier to figure out
Yes! This game was my first Mega Drive game. For the X-Mass of '93, I got the Sega Mega Drive 2, Jurassic Park pack. I'll always remember that intro from Dr. Grants campaign. The sound track for the visitors center was the best, as it had that right beat that fits the pace and action. My personal favorite levels were Dr. Grants, "The River Level" and "The Visitors Center." I did get a surprise, years later, when I heard people HATED the river level. I understand why, as the river level is too much 'trial and error.' And yeah, that final confrontation with the 2 Raptors was a pain in the rear rump, but the manual gave you a clue, and I ended up figuring it out by accident.
The River is also my favorite level, felt real proud when I beat it as a kid :) But I'll never forget how the Trike at the very end initially sent me for a swim - I also remember my reaction to that lead to my mom telling me to turn off the Mega Drive, LOL...
This was my first Mega Drive 2 game that came with my system when my grandad bought me the console. It is still holds a very special place in my heart, despite the limitations.
It looked like it frustrated you but seeing those falling to your death raft scenes like at 10:39 was extremely hilarious. Thank you for your sacrifice.

Had the SNES & Genesis versions of JP and I enjoyed them both as they’re completely different games which really added to my enjoyment of the games. Both are fantastic games that play well to this day. Really wished my TG-16 would have received a version but no such luck.
I love this game on the genesis, that opening scene scared me so much growing up.
Having this and MK at the same time was a great moment in time.

I wonder if sega collecting will increase or decrease in value or popularity as the people who were young during the life of the systems get older and older, I suspect as the nostalgia effect wears off it will decrease in popularity.
At some point a new leader within Sega-Sammy will begin leveraging its back catalog. Either with reissues, remakes, or licensing everything out. That will likely hit Sega collecting hard. Especially when classics like Panzer Saga, Dragon Force, Crusader of Centy, and Burning Rangers are all available on modern platforms.
Well, let's just say, the Beatles and the rolling stones aren't selling as good as they did 50 years ago. But quality never goes out of fashion, and the same applies for video games.
I loved this game so much when I was a kid and I do remember getting extremely frustrated with the final boss as Grant. It took me hours to figure out what to do on mere accident.
I had to call the Sega help hotline to find out what to do.
I don't think I could put up with this game now as an adult, but as a kid I absolutely loved it. Still have my copy from back in the day, and though it's not without flaws, it remains one of my favorite games to this day.
There's (sort of) hints to the properties of those pink grenades. You can use them to release some of the ammo found in the Canyon and Volcano levels. I learned about these much later though, and honestly can't remember how I figured out how to beat the final boss. I do remember how proud I felt when beating the game as a kid, though.
You never have to re-enter a password when you get a GAME OVER screen, though. Just go to the password section and the last password is already put in. Press start and you're good to go. Thanks for the review, hope you'll cover Jurassic Park Rampage Edition as well :) Definitely my favorite of the two!
I remember being in 2nd/3rd grade drawing the volcano level backdrop. Many Saturday mornings were spent. Great soundtrack. 👍🏻

Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park Rampage Edition and The Lost World Jurassic Park were all good games on the Genesis.
Loved the game too. the way my friend and me beat it was because there was a tip in a magazine article, I forgot the issue. We spent weeks trying to figure it out beforehand and it was so damn frustrating. I agree with your plight sir hahaha!!

I would stay up late at night playing this game and the intro was always terrifying with the Rex shaking the hell out of the jeep. Great memories.

Nice review, a friend had this on the Genesis and we played the heck out of it one night, even finishing it. That said, I had the SNES growing up and always loved that version of Jurassic Park. The visuals and music were great, and its only real flaw is there's no save or password feature so beating the game in one sitting is quite a challenge, especially since its very unclear how you are supposed to complete some of the main objectives without the manual handy, and even then it's still a bit convoluted.
Pretty accurate review, and yes, I never figured out the ending until gamefaqs was a thing. Note there was an in-game hint in the stage intro/description: "Break a Leg", hinting you needed to grenade the supports.
I always loved the music in this game, liked the atmosphere it provided to the environments

Fun fact : in the manual, there was a screenshot of the map with the password of the 5th stage, we kids bearly read the manual but I did because I was stuck at the sewer level (3rd stage), imagine my surprise when it worked.
ı rembmer we beat last level with reading manual maybe on weapon section. also found open doors on last levels pressing up on manual.
I much preferred the Rampage Edition, it was a competent run and gun and pretty fun.
As for the original : Playing as a Raptor was pretty cool but overall the game was kind of clunky. It was a game that most of my friends and family had in their collection. I did think some of the levels were interesting like the volcano (though annoying).

I remember this getting very middling to average reviews scores around 60-70% in the British gaming magazines but I loved it.
The music was creepy in this game. I was born in 1983. I rented this game before at the Video Store , back in the day.
I enjoyed playing this on my Sega nomad . I still remember waiting in a long ass line in Houston to see it at the theater with my parents!!

I did not have much experience playing Jurassic Park on Genesis since I played the SNES version more, but I have loads of memories playing the Lost World on Genesis with my friend. We used to play that together for hours with co op.
This game had some menacing moments. I recall playing several Jurassic Park games and this one. Good memories. And geez, this was a bit tough
JP Rampage Edition, it was great. I got it as either an extra pack in title with my model 2 Genesis or had to send away for it as a free game.
I helped to work on this game. I cut the backgrounds out of digitized photos of dinosaur toys. :)
The bit with having the dinosaur bones fall on the raptors was in the original movie script, but it wasn't working. They changed it to have the T-Rexx show up and save the day. Blue Sky probably only had the original ending to work with during development.
I have a real love-hate relationship with this game I was one of the ones that got it right away as I love the movie and heard from friends that you could play as the raptor!
The problem was when I first got it I was young enough where I couldn't get past I believe it was the Sewer stage where there's really tiny platforms and the raptor was very hard to control although years later I would find out how to get past it.
This left the majority of my experience going to Grant and I really like that story but it always kind of aggravated me at the beginning that I couldn't finish the other half!
And yes the music is one of those irritating things that I would turn it low on the TV and just kind of like make up music for it or would actually like come along to those horrible tunes but to me I don't know I got used to it after a while :)
the jumping hard on pipe level with raptor but raptor also have chicken jump ablity push his hand floor and jumo front like cat. with that way more easy to pipe level. raptor also have high jumps can jump higher if you pressing up which helps beaten enemy. seems people dont know this.
This was the first video game I ever played in 1994, I played the genesis version.
For some reason I always found the T-Rex sprite unsettling to look at. I guess it has an uncanny valley look to it that makes it kind of creepy looking.
I enjoyed this game as a kid. Great presentation and graphics. Not a classic, but fun.
Also, I felt the music was very atmospheric for the time. Made the game feel tense.

Power Station is an absolute jam.
I grew up with this game and absolutely loved it, best way to play it was late at night with the lights off, this was the version everyone played when i was a kid, and i never had a problem with the music either, i loved the sound effects and the dark and gritty tunes for the stages worked fine imo.

Great video - huge nostalgia trip for me! Jurassic Park on Genesis has some pretty useful cheats and other things via the password system, even a cool debug mode of the game.
I loved this game, I remember getting in the bargain bin at toys r us because in the early 00s I was still going back and playing Genesis games. A lot of the music to this game is stuck in my head, not because they are bangers but I always thought there was something goofy sounding about them and it made the game more fun. After I discovered the debug code it brought even more replayability to the game being able to get the characters to play each other's levels.
I have both JP and Rampage Edition. Both are tougher than a cheap steak but graphical show pieces.

I am someone who figured out how to beat the raptors on my own. The process was simple: The first time I got there I dropped in between them without knowing they were there. After a while of trying to figure it out(couple days), I realized the concussion grenades are the ONLY weapons that don't set them off. From there the solution was obvious.
I was ten when I solved this. It took me longer to figure out the path through rhe boat level.
Jurassic Park stands as the only movie I have ever gone to the theater to see more than once in my lifetime. I waited outside of our local theater for the first afternoon showing as a young 14 year old kid still big into dinosaurs, I was so pumped to see the movie. I even own the film on almost every format (VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, etc,,,)
I got to see a second time because apparently all my gushing about the film got my parents curious to see it, and asked if I wanted to come along to watch it again.
So yeah, lots of memories of the film. As far the video games I remember playing the SNES, Sega CD, and Genesis ones. The Sega CD bored me to death as without a guide, I had no idea what I was doing, and there was a timer on the game. The Super Nintendo one was okay. Just a top down shooter, but that also got old real quick given the main goal is to collect all the eggs in the world. When you went inside, it "tried" to be like a FPS game such as DOOM with very "meh" results.
The Sega Genesis one I feel was the one that tried to be the closest to the movie in terms of appearance, but yeah...I didn't get very far. I think as Grant I got to the second level, but remember getting much further as the Raptor.
The biggest sin all these Jurassic Park games made...NO THEME SONG. Like, one of the most memorable parts of the film is that John Williams theme and not one company could get the license to have it on their game?

I remember my cousin getting JP for his birthday gift and I great memories playing this and SoR how I miss them days growing up
This was one of the first games I owned for the system. It was included in a Mega Drive II bundle in Australia. I remember it as tricky in parts and satisfying to complete. I invested the time in it back then, as you tended to do when you had a more limited library. If I played it for the first time now I doubt I'd have the patience to play it through. I also haven't gone back to play it again, which I think all speaks to its cloudiness as a package as you say. But yeah there's enough there to make it worthwhile giving it a go. Your channel is really good, I like going through them to look at games I've not had a chance to play and may want to add to my collection and what games to skip when collecting more, I've still got all my old systems and games but always looking into whether to add games, I have some newer systems but I like a lot of the retro games on my retro consoles.
