    Behringer was smart by releasing these in different colors. It gives them a little extra personality.

      If only the plastic didn't look so awful. Also, I really wish Behringer would have designed a new, more minimal logo for their synths and drum machines. The RD-6 sounds really good though (the TD-3 not so much IMO).

      @@t.n.3819 The Behringer logo is where you put your favorite stickers. A yellow smiley face? A yin-yang? A glow-in-the-dark alien? Felix the cat?

      I hate the new translucent colors, but they're cheaper than the "cool" ones like Silver or Yellow. I saw a translucent tangerine TD-3 for $109 at a popular US music webstore. It's both amazingly low, but also not low enough when compared to something like the Pocket Operator series. I do love the sound of the TD-3 and RD-6 though, they're close to the real thing, and less irritating than a subscription to Roland's "cloud" plugins.

    Thanks for this video! I recently picked up both the RD-6 and TD-3 MO (as well as a Donner B-1). I have been into psytrance for MANY years, decided to see if I could create some of my own! But what I want to tell you is that my RD-6 is red, and my TD-3 is yellow.... just the opposite of your colors! So when I try to visually follow what you are doing here, my mind gets really messed up, LOL! But that's MY problem, thanks for sharing this video!

    I totally agree with your opinion as well, that incoming midi data should not be ignored, when patterns/tracks are playing. With it being a polyphonic device, it would be really nice to be able to play/program in additional percussion, on top of patterns. Great videos buddy, I am now looking to get into some hardware and I have spotted the Behringer RD-6-SR drum machine and the Behringer TD-3-BK bassline synth. I have no experience in using things like these but I do know I want to use something like this, i.e. stand alone, as opposed to software. Hopefully you can answer a couple of questions for me:
    Are these machines generally easy to use for a very inexperienced person?
    If I buy both of them, is it possible to link them and if so, what is needed?
    Lets say I wanted to then record something using them both,how is that done? Do I need an external hard drive? Or are they their own 'instruments'?
    Is there a single machine that would do what I need after hearing my needs?
    I have a budget of about 600 for a start so if there was something else you could recommend too that would be great. I love hip-hop and house music so any other machines you think are good for a novice would be great.
    Also what leads / cables / connectors would I need?
    Sorry for being a complete novice and asking so many questions but you're videos are the ones I can follow easiest!

    • @PeteMidi
      @PeteMidi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks - in principle, RD-6 + TD-3 is a good combination, although the TD-3 sequencer is not everybody's darling, at least not mine ;)
      Possibly, a better solution for the beginner is a groovebox that integrates drums, bass, sequencer and fx. You may look for the Novation circuit machines, but this is not my field.
      If you really start at zero in all regards then it may be a good idea to look for some suitable internet courses/tutorials ...

Note, accent, glide etc. Would be cool to use the MPC to sequence it all perhaps? Wish I could borrow an RD-6 and just sample all the sounds into MPC.. Should be easy since the RD-6 istn't even tunable.

    I've had the original since they were brand new in the store ... the music shop had them next to the TB-303 but at that time no one knew what to do with a 303! I looked at it was like "Um ... DUMB!" I was a bloody fool. Hehe. But I've always loved my 606 and the Behringer sounds really, really close. Plus a great clap sound plus distortion plus individual outs and MIDI and all that other stuff. Only slight downside is it can't be battery operated like the original. Anyway, at this price? The original 606 was the first drum machine I ever owned. I actually used it in a live situation. I had to mark the tempos with felt pen on the machine. I ended up trading in for an 808 that at least had a incremental dial for tempo. Traded this for Oberheim DX but that's another sad story.......

  • @BCThunderthud
    @BCThunderthud 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you test the one hidden sound design option? Adjusting the tempo when the 606 is receiving sync should adjust OH decay. I don't think it works with CY, at least it doesn't on mine.

    I see what you did there. Red TD-3. Yellow RD-6. So, I guess you have a black RD-8 hiding somewhere?
    Unless you are austrian?
    Anyway, thanks for the video. It did helped me make up my mind a bit. Though I like the machines, I still wait a little longer for getting one of these. I am still more of a 80s person than the 90s. I loved the sounds though, and must say I hated the distortion on the RD-6. I get what you are trying to do do, but all I could hear was clipping and a very nervous control to get it sound right while maintaining the same output Db's. The MIDI not responding to commands while sequencing is also a big deal for me not do go for it, yet. Is this still an issue though?

    • @PeteMidi
      @PeteMidi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback - yes the distortion unit is a matter of taste, it quickly destructs the original sound and replaces it by something else, which you may like or not... The issue with the midi triggering has been fixed, it now also works when the sequencer is running.

  • @jenniferw8963

    • @PeteMidi
      @PeteMidi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are two trigger outputs from the tom tracks, for the audio outputs I guess you need an audio to trigger/cv device

    • @djlehara
      @djlehara 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trigger out works with eurorack but weak. The cv out and gate out on a TD-3 syncs nicely with my Bell or Pluck in Plaits. Sync in and out on RD-6 works nicely with pocket operators or new Roland compacts.

    Great jam as always Pete! I had a 606 with the separate output mod back on college, and I used to put the kick through a distortion pedal to beef it up so the built in effect in the Behringer makes sense. It would be better if each sound had an effect send pot or switch though, as I'd prefer to put a subset of sounds through the built in distortion.

    Great review thanks. I am on the verge of buying both the TD-3 and RD-6. I am not hugely experienced in electronic music making yet though I have written a few tracks and am working my way through in terms of understanding the concepts of sound design in Ableton Live. How easy would it be to link these two up to my M1 laptop and record jams in Ableton Live? Apart from the main devices themselves would I require any extra hardware?

    • @PeteMidi
      @PeteMidi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback! You need an additional audio/midi interface, 2 channel audio is minimum, if you want to record rd-6 single outputs you need more channels.

    • @stuartleighton
      @stuartleighton 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeteMidi Thanks for the reply. When you say recording RD-6 single outputs do you mean recording different elements of the drum machine separately, i.e. the clap, hihat, kick?

    Seriously, it doesn't respond to MIDI notes when your DAW sequencer is running? That is a deal breaker in my book. What the heck is up with that? Thank you for pointing this out, great review!

    • @PeteMidi
      @PeteMidi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you first have to stop the internal rd-6 sequencer before the machine can respond to external midi notes...

    • @ErikHawk
      @ErikHawk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeteMidi Oh I see. And there's no way to disable the internal sequencer so that it doesn't start playing when you start your DAW?

      It does not start when using internal clock, say no midi sync, which is the default setting. Then you can play it completely from the DAW

    The fact it has 6 outputs makes the lack of editing of the actual sounds acceptable - to me at least...v hard to buy with zero possibility to change the sound but those 6 outputs...hmmm...thats a v decent thing to see for the money...pretty big deal to have individual outputs on hardware drum machines and to have that on an analog at this price makes it ok...

    Hi Pete, so I got tired of waiting for the RD 6 to arrive and I bought a Roland TR 8 with the 7x7 expansion pack instead..... (which includes the 606 drums), should I still get this? I really like the look of the yellow RD 6 but should I put my money elsewhere....??🙄😬😬

    • @PeteMidi

      Hi, I also have the tr-8 with the expansion and I really like it. But I wanted an additional, even simpler machine which does not take much space on the desktop... But in terms of a sound-wise complement to the tr-8 the volca drum and the model cycles are good additions where the model has a better user interface.

    I use the same combination (both with a smiley) and it sounds very close to a 303/606 setup. But maybe you can explain the difference between the „track“ and „pattern“ mode. I didn‘t understand that. 😬

    • @PeteMidi
      @PeteMidi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In track mode you can chain an arbitrary sequence of patterns, I guess 64, there is no info in the "manual". I did not use it because without display it's rather uncomfortable

    • @chriswareham
      @chriswareham 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's like the original 606, then you can chain patterns together in an arbitrary order to form a track or song. One track can be 256 patterns long and the others 64.

  • @dylanreece7991
    @dylanreece7991 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you chain it to a clock that has swing, like form an RD-8 for example, could the RD-6 become swung? Or with the analog trigger, could that somehow allow for swing?
