    Hello everyone! We made a Deep Dive Episode on the RD-6 with an easy to understand explanation of Track Write Mode (Song Mode) th-cam.com/video/ysJm9rfNW1M/w-d-xo.html in which we show how Song Mode / Track Write Mode really works (also applicable to the Roland TR-606), how to copy and paste patterns and how the RD-6 is synced to other devices.

    🥁🎛🪛You can adjust the white noise or snare amount of the snare by removing the back cover and adjusting a trim pot just right of the center of the back of the unit, where the sticker covers the back. I took precise measurements and drilled a tiny hole in my back cover so I can easily adjust the sound without removing the cover. It is not wildly dramatic, but you can go from a very soft ballad snare to more explosive, old school, noisy burst.💥

  • @CaptainPikant
    @CaptainPikant  3 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    A quick correction (thanks to Andrew Henderson for pointing this out): Copying and pasting patterns IS indeed possible on the RD-6. What a relief! Here's how you do it...
    1. Go to the source pattern in WRITE MODE while the sequencer is stopped
    2. Press FUNCTION + CPY simultaneously
    3. Go to the target pattern
    4. Press FUNCTION + PST simultaneously

    the snare and the hi hats are two distinctive sounds of the 606..
    sequencer is simple with no gimmicks..
    for the price i think its a good choice.
    and with the single outs you can pimp the bd and toms fe. with external eqs/effects
    if you like.

      Agreed, and it pretty much sits alone in its price bracket ( volcas but limited hardware )
      Its so neatly priced i have been eyeing one used for external clk trigger for other synths. Perk with that its also a drum synth 😄 ove got tr8 but this has better 606. More gnarlier

    Absolutely first class Kapitan!!!
    So clear, so precise.
    I just bought one this afternoon second hand.
    Okay I have a new Volca drums which soundwise knocks socks of the RD6 but it takes longer to learn where everything is.
    The RD6 is very well laid out IMHO and not overwhelming to a 73 year old like me.
    There are lots of things that can be done with minimalistic kit when combined with say a Korg Monotribe etc etc etc.
    Thanks

    This was a VERY well done video. Thorough and really made me laugh when you buzzed the red version on screen, for functions that were not available. I do believe you have given some misinformation on a few points however. 1.) I have seen videos where cpy and pst DOES in fact work for patterns. You said this is not the case. I will try and follow up with links to said videos. 2.) You mentioned the RD-6 does not respond to incoming midi and this is also not true. You can fully program the RD-6 externally and to boot, external sequences respond to accent PER INSTRUMENT and not only PER STEP, so a huge bonus there.

    • @CaptainPikant
      @CaptainPikant  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you very much 😊 If you find any info on CPY and PST working for patterns I would be very glad if you could report back here. But take a look at the color coding, CPY and PST has a solid white background just like the other elements that only belong to the track modes (like the letters 1 to 8 on the instrument dial corresponding to the tracks). On your second point I'm a little confused, I don't believe I've ever said that the RD-6 does not respond to incoming MIDI?

    • @ASH-ou4cg
      @ASH-ou4cg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CaptainPikant I will definitely do so and I really hope I'm not wrong. I see your point on the colouring and that would be a major shame, if you couldn't copy patterns. Such a waste. Having to manually program identical patterns with slight variations, would be really time consuming. I apologize too, if I miss understood what you meant when you said no sound triggering/finger drumming. What I meant was, the RD-6 does respond to external midi, so you should be able to trigger/finger drum from another device, like an MPC, Beatstep Pro etc to achieve a live performance. The added benefit, is accent is per instrument in this mode and not per step, which really opens possibilities for more expressive and dynamic drum playing.

    great review. would love to see you do a comparison of all the 606 clones and judge them on how good they sound. I don't know much about the cyclone 606 or acid lab 606 but it's evident that the RD-6 hats sound better than the Roland TR-06. half tempted to get an original because of awesome the hats are!

    • @Decoy303
      @Decoy303 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cyclone Drum Drone (606 clone) is really nice yet simple to use. Has some really handy functions as well but unlike the Roland Boutique 606 clone their is no delay or distortion effects. Not a deal breaker but if it had a few effects it would be the best choice. Me... Well I just ordered my RD-6 AM version and I plan on getting the Roland Boutique sometime in July. I think the three clones along with my Drumbrute and Drumbrute Impact will make some nice rhythms together.

  • @bahutu802

    Thanks for the overview! What I don't see mentioned in many (or any) reviews: As I understand it sends all sequenced events via MIDI OUT as separate MIDI notes per track/instrument. Thus it can also be used as a basic 8-track MIDI sequencer to trigger samples on a sampler/groovebox (or you could just replace let's say the bassdrum, in case you need a different one). Sure, it doesn't have microtiming, parameter locks / automation and swing, yet as far as I know you won't find a hardware multitrack MIDI sequencer at this price point (the volcas don't have MIDI out, so can't be used for that, and it should be mentioned that you probably can't change the assigned MIDI notes, so your sampler would have to be able to adopt to the received MIDI notes - it's between 36 and 51 as far as I know) (in case you know any others with a lower price point than IK Multimedia Uno Drum / Circuit Tracks / Elektron Model Cycles / Samples, Arturia DrumBrute Impact, I'm glad to be told).
    I'm quite curious about the upcoming Sonicware Bass & Beats (probably beginning/mid 2022, around 200 bucks) which could fill a gap in the field of budget but mighty sequencers.

    • @CaptainPikant
      @CaptainPikant  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you could use it as a very basic sequencer. But to be honest, the RD-8/9 and DrumBrutes (microtiming!) are so much more capable in that regard. The RD-8/9 even let you map the MIDI notes inside of the device without the need of a computer.

I am very thankful I snagged My TR8 ARIA when I did. the 7x7 package. and I dig the performance edge that it gives, where one can go inbetween the normal xox sewuencing and 'on the fly' record live. Limited by a sixteen step sequencer. I dont know why sequncers dont have a ^4 step STANDARD at least,. however restrictions cause creativity by default

    Another great thing about the RD-6, is it incorporated the 'feature' of being able to use the tempo mode to change the decay of the OH, if the RD-6 is clocked as a slave, from an external source. If the RD-6 is clocked externally, turning the tempo knob will change the decay of the OH for another/different flavour of programming.

    If you're using with a DAW based midi sequencer then you should be able to use the drum sounds outside the grid as a sound modular correct?

    • @CaptainPikant
      @CaptainPikant  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! You can use your DAW as a sequencer for the RD-6 and freely place the beats outside of the grid. Using the note velocity you can even control which notes are accented, so that gives you individual accents instead of the RD-6's global accent.

    The RD-6 doesn't run on batteries, and it's larger than the original TR-606. Those aren't huge downsides, but they mean something. The TR-606 is a 40-year-old design, and a lot of the space is used by four C-cell batteries. I assume the reason the RD-6 is larger is because it uses the cheapest possible design with just one single-layer PCB. It should be $80 or $100. But the RD-6 is half the price of an RD-9! The RD-9 is a bargain! You can use it for self-defense! And buying an RD-9 makes a lot more sense because a real TR-909 is almost 20X as expensive. But a real TR-606 isn't very expensive. You can get a TR-606 and an MSY2 sync box for about 3X the price of an RD-6. And Behringer has several $30 distortion pedals which are better than the included distortion on the RD-6. The only significant advantage the RD-6 has is the individual outputs, because that kick needs a lot of help.
    The RD-6 is a good choice for a first drum machine I suppose. If you really want a drum machine that's under $200, I like the Volca Drum and the PO-33 a lot more, but those aren't "normal" drum machines.

    • @CaptainPikant
      @CaptainPikant  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Out of the two I think the RD-6 is more accessible. Like the 303, the TD-3 is notoriously hard to program because entering note pitches is done separately from entering the note durations and pauses (which can drive you mad sooner or later).

    Hmmmmm, I might be tempted to get this model but only if I wanted to trigger it from my Yamaha DTX Multi 12, since I love synthesized drum sounds but prefer playing the sounds live into audio inputs. Doesn’t seem like it’s worth the effort, since there isn’t individual editability and only one output. Out of curiosity though, does it easily synch with the Behringer 303 duplicate?
    It would be sensational if Behringer ground out a simulated SDSV module - but one equipped with expanded user memory like on the SDS7.

    • @CaptainPikant
      @CaptainPikant  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you do have individual outs (they can be seen at 1:24). If you can configure the Yamaha pads to send the specific MIDI notes there's no reason this shouldn't work. Syncing with the TB-3 should also be no problem, there's plenty of options (see 8:54). If you want I can give it a try next week and report back to you.

    • @Shred_The_Weapon
      @Shred_The_Weapon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, Captain, your response is much appreciated. If performing such a test with the two units doesn’t detract from your daily responsibilities, I imagine a few people would enjoy learning how compatible they are. Even though I’m not that big a fan of the 303, 606 and 808 sounds myself, I know plenty of people around the Internet are because of Acid and House.
