    Cool historic watch, i got the Laco Aachen a real "Flieger" with the dial numbers from 0 to 60 minutes, a very long minute hand and a very short hour hand. A revival of the original "Luftwaffe" bomber pilot watch.

    Excellent review! Laco is an old established watch maker, a good insider tipp in Germany, not too expensive but good quality and robust, designed for Luftwaffe use. So I put my money where my mouth is and just bought the 39mm Augsburg!

    Nice review. Seems I'm happy that i can try the size before buying since it's just 10 miles to the Laco factory 😊

  • @steventan869

    Bought my Altenburg 42 six months ago after watching your video. I really like the watch. Happy with the purchase. And yes it may now rock a Japanese movement instead of the historical Swiss but I don't see how that's a problem. Reliable and affordable pricing. If someone insists on a Swiss movement, they can always just buy the 1k Laco Originals. The only drawback for this entry models probably is the Laco branding instead of the option to opt out of it, but that's no big deal for me.

    Beautiful case design and absolute perfect dimensions. I just don’t understand the green’d numerals. It would look so much better in just a simple clean white. Would pull the trigger in a second if that was the case.

    Yet another great review of these iconic watches, Marc. I watched this sometime ago when I first discovered Flieger, and I’m about to pull the trigger as soon as my tax refund comes in, and I was going to buy a Paterborn, but based on your advice, I think I’ll go with a 39 mm instead (it helps that your wrist size is the same as mine). I’ll finally be buying a watch from you, which I feel very good about because I’ve been watching your videos and getting great information from you for quite some time. 👍

    I know I'm late to the party, but I'm so, so glad you're interactive and post tons of informative videos like this one. Whenever I see a watch on the site, I think to myself "this is great, but I'd need to see it in a video" and sure enough, you've always got a video for the watches I wind up loving! I may be picking this up as my first automatic watch with a sapphire crystal very soon.

  • @giovanni8515

    I feel the flieger manufactures would improve their sales by discussing the fit (in proportion to wrist size) of each size watch.
    Laco sells 39 vs 42mm.
    Stowa sells 36 vs 40 vs 43mm.
    I prefer smaller sizes, but the flieger style boasts a larger dial historically, but then the lug to lug height becomes too large for those with sub 7 inch wrists.
    Quite the struggle!
    This video has been very helpful though. Cheers

    Fliegers are one of those watches which definately could live without any sort of branding on the dial. Kinda takes away from their original purpose of function and legibility being of paramount. Not a big fan green tinted numerals either.

    "It's a flieger. It's meant to be clean." you said. Refering to the absent of a date window. But a flieger had to be big, right? It's a tool watch! I must admit, the 39 version looks way better than the 42 one, but yeah, why make a concession in relation to the size and not concerning a date window?

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The originals were 55mm +. But the date can be confusing, so it's eliminated. Many people prefer the clean layout of no date.

  • @khronokraze
    @khronokraze 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    These are cool, but I'm waiting on the new 39mm original pilot watches. I think those, more than the basic, really would benefit from the smaller case size because the lugs are so high and straight off the case sides. They almost literally can look like wings. From. Directly on top they are passable and may not exceed the arm/wrist silhouette edges. But, once you start to turn your arm away to. A more natural position and viewing angle, those primitive looking original pilot lugs really start to jut out from the outer edge of your arm line. The thing is, those original pilot watches were originally 55mm AND never meant to be worn over bare skin and over a thick flight jacket or gloves.
    I mean you could be fine with that knowledge of the way they were originally designed and that's why they kind of stick out of the wrist space if your wrist doesn't have enough gerth.
    Thus, I really anticipate the new 39mm original pilot watches will fit the bill for my 6.875"wrist size, and I hope you will eventually get some in, Mark.
    Oh, one minor down note about the 39mm case is I really wished they had kept the 20mm lugs instead of scaling down to 18mm. I could live with that if the lugs look and finally wear right on my wrist.

      Long Island Watch and, u should do another video on the 39mm original pilot watches.. I think the difference in design, especially the lugs, is an important consideration.
      I'd be very interested to confirm or deny my suspicions about how the 42mm vs 39mm original pilots will fit on my wrist since mine is near your wrist size at 6.875".

  • @mitchcross6271
    @mitchcross6271 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure if I should get a 39mm or 42mm. My wrist is about 7”. Mark, I do think the 39mm looks good on you wrist which is 1/4 inch smaller than mine. I do have a 42mm “regular” watch that also has a smaller bezel (not a divers watch) and it seems to fit me well, however will the size and chunkiness of the Laco’s strap make the 42mm too big to wear comfortably? I feel like I’m kind of an in between size. I don’t mind a slightly larger looking watch but I don’t really don’t like wearing a strap on the last (smallest) hole. Any thoughts?

    I've been debating between the PADERBORN 42mm and the FRIEDRICHSHAFEN 45mm and this MAY have settled it for me. Even though I have a 7 1/2" wrist, I may be better off with the 42mm still creating that FLIEGER instrument jumbo size but not being TOO unwieldy on the lugs. Do you get many regrets from the 45mm pilots from people? I have the Seiko Turtle Ocean and it is not appreciably large for me at all.

      We also offer the "original" pilot watch line besides this basic line. Those models are accurate replicas of the big 55 mm versions, only in a msaller more wearable diameter (39, 42 or 45 mm). The finish of the case, engravings on the case back and side, crown and lugs are exactly rebuilt from the historical models. Also those have swiss ETA movements in automatic or handwind.

    • @iHaejeog
      @iHaejeog 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ClaxtonBay123 They're made by Citizen I think. As far as reliability, they are decent movements that are seen in many of the other Japanese brands besides Seiko and their movements. The thing about the Miyota 9015 is that it runs at 28,800 bph and has hacking and handwinding (as well as a date function) similar to the ETA 2824. However, the Seiko equivalent at that level would be the 6r15 (which is being put on higher end watches from Seiko now) which only operates at 21,600 bph. I don't doubt the reliability of any of the movements however.

    I will have to disagree on the size, as we are talking about a flieger, a watch that was intended to be huge, extremely legible under every condition with a quick glance at the wrist, a "real" flieger would be 45mm or above, now this is obviously a more "consumer friendly" incarnation of the original flieger watch, but to me, there is still something very weird about seeing a 39mm watch of that kind, it just doesn't feel right

    • @itsalgud1459
      @itsalgud1459 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep in mind that the original Fleiger’s at 55 mm were meant to be worn over a flight jacket, not directly on the wrist. To me, that means I would buy one more appropriate to my wrist size, but that certainly is a matter of personal taste.

    If the watch contained an ETA 2824-2, $410.00 would represent value...but with a Miyota 82xx? That's silly. IMO, you're paying $250 extra for (the nominal value of) perceived positives as may be associated with the Laco brand name.
    A much better deal available from S. Korean micro-brand Tisell, for its Flieger B, which contains a Miyota hi beat movement (9000 series) and retailing at $200...

      I would agree wholeheartedly agree with you if we were talking about a diver but with fliegers the traditional aspects of the design take precedence because they were originally designed with practicality in mind. The tissel offers a better movement WITH hacking (pretty important for fliegers),a sterile dial, a traditional fliegers crown, a slightly domed sapphire crystal, heat treated blued hands( unheard of in such low budget fliegers). The only cons of the tissel is the blue lume but I personally prefer it over the green tint of the laco numerals

    You know what Marc, you been tempting me with various things for quite some time now and finally, you've gone TOO FAR !!!!!!
    Fine, I'm going to go over and order a "B" Dial from you.
    Happy ?????
    Seriously though, you'll have my order just as soon as I get back from the deli with a sandwich.

      Pleasure mate... I'm on more of a dress watch phase right now, but those B dial watches are just so damn cool... and takes me back to when I was a bit of a lume whore... that thing lights up like a Christmas tree lol
      My grandfather flew Spitfires against the Luftwaffe (I'm 52 and originally from London, England. He's probably turning in his grave, bless him.

    Are there the non-logo dial versions in 39 mm case size available too?

    • @elv3a424
      @elv3a424 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marius Ardeleanu Nope. They want you to pay 800$+ for a sterile dial.

      Elias Westeren All right, my question is: are there 800$ sterile dial 39 mm case size for sale? 😀
      That is: Leipzig and Munster in 39 mm size 😉

    Fliegers were meant to be worn large. The originals were 55mm! Come on with these women sizes of 39mm. Look at the type b dial how crowded it appears on a 39. Improper spacing.

      They were also meant moto be worn outside the jacket sleeve.
      Sometimes you can’t be so specific and pedantic because at the end of the day the different diameters help a lot with modern sizes and wearing the watch in a more traditional manner on the wrist unless you’re a fighter pilot. Then, if that’s the case the watch isn’t even yours. It was given to the pilot for their flight, and it was returned when they finished their mission.

    What kind of tiny child size wrist do you have to have that would make a 42mm Flieger "unwearable"?
    I'm opting for the 45mm next.

    Laco get rid off the names! Put it on the back I want sterile dials like it should be. Also no green it needs to be white!

      NATH C The pilots watch as opposed to the ‘basic’ watch has a sterile dial, but costs more than twice as much.
      As for the tint to the numerals, I think that the lume may be responsible, it’s shining all the time, it doesn’t ‘switch on’ when the lights go out, so if the lume is blue/green you’ll have a surplus of these colours in addition to reflected daylight.

    doesnt sounds good! origin of those watches is 55-60mm, even 75mm sometimes. but look at theese, what is next, a "5mm fliegeruhr"? is this very important buying a flieger to everybody on the world?? :(

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Many folks just want a smaller flieger.
