8:53 thats in BASIC? i am legitimately happy to see that! makes me confident that you could do something like commander keen BASIC.

Excellent review of the state-of-the-platform games-wise! I'm intending to get into X16 more in the future, but my Atari 2600 project 'Immunity' has grown to fill much of my free time. Maybe I'll port it X16 with much enhanced graphics, sound, and animation. X16 will support many more on-screen moving objects, as these games today demonstrate.

Just need a version of "Bad Apple" for the Commander X16 (it's been "ported", or rather "rendered" on various other 8-bit computers already). It's kind of a running challenge of how many different setups it can be rendered on.

Dunno id you'll see this but I did make a working version of it for the x16

You did in assembly I have to check that out. My bread board computer will only have 4 line LCD but I have an idea to make a very different version of character snakes on it, and of course in assembly language. Keep it up :)

Totally wild that you programmed this in assembly wow

    Just curious,
What are your reasons for saying that C programming on the X16 platform is more difficult than assembly?
Is it a lack of a comprehensive C library, or more that the CPU itself is not so C friendly (registers, stacks and stack-frames, etc.)
As an aside, I have not looked into X16 yet but used to do assembly and C on the C-64, even wrote my own assembler for it back in the late 80's. The 6510 is not a processor that is tailored for C programming...
    Cheers,

Just like you said, the 6502 is not well-suited to C, so you have to be extremely careful in how you use it, to the point that it becomes more complicated than just doing it in assembly and take total control.

@@polluks2 I know, I made a whole video on it! I also showed the costs and limitations.

@@slithymatt - Yeah, it takes a good C compiler to get around the limitations. When I was doing C on the Intel 8051 micro-controllers (eg. NXP 80C51) the C compiler tools were really tailored well to the programmers model and it was pretty easy to use. Maybe the 65xx family compiler (CC16?) could be improved the same way, eg. implementing it's own software stack/frame model. I'm guessing on some of that... really need to go back and see how it has evolved since I last used it.
      Cheers,

@@EngineeringVignettes cc65 does implement a frame stack, which of course adds to the memory footprint

I agree, they are all very good games! Although personally I prefer joystick or keyboard for shooters and pong-style games, I really don't like mouse control in those kinds of games.

So what's happening with the Commander X16?
So many other products have been released yet the X16 is nowhere to be seen.

    • @slithymatt
      @slithymatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is in active development, but a few of the chips are in back order, so even if it was 100% ready they wouldn't be able to go into full production. There are multiple alternative designs that are software-compatible that use other chips that are working on breadboards.

@@slithymatt I hope the X16 comes through. I've just put down a significant amount of $$$ on the Mega65 batch 2. Hopefully it will be delivered before xmas, but not holding my breath.

There is a very old one that is out of date, and it required an external keyboard to use it.
