    Did you know you can make your own ketchup using that leftover tomato paste? Just add a little (pinch) sugar, celery seed, oregano, basil, and salt & pepper. Add or subtract the seasonings to your taste. Add a little water if you want to thin it out. 😉

    I saw a post in my Facebook feed about birds eating strawberries and it said if you put red painted rocks in the similar size of your berries and lay them around the plant bed birds will come try to eat them and realize they are not food and its considered to be a deterrence. I haven't tried it as yet but its worth a try to see if it helps!

      I don't like molasses beans so I think I will try a general version of your beans they look great. Just to offer a tip for cooking with liquids, they always lose liquid as it evaporates during cooling time. So just a tip for next time, even if it looks a bit too liquidy that's actually the time to take them off the heat...they will continue to cook and absorb those juices as they cool off

    Chia seeds don't taste bad. But, i add them for texture more than anything else. And then they end up being healthy too so that's a bonus. They add a nice little crunch in a way. But they're not really crunchy. Maybe you could get a tablespoon or so from the Bulk Barn and start small. Personally, I take chia seeds and mix them with coconut milk to make a sort of pudding that's healthy and doesn't have a lot of carbohydrates as long as I use sugar alternative.

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting 🧐 Does it compare at all to tapioca?

    • @roxanne533
      @roxanne533 ปีที่แล้ว

      @JessicaWanders yes, it kind of reminds me of that texture a bit. But you don't have to cook it. You just soak it overnight in the coconut milk and it makes a sort of pudding. Some people eat it in the morning with fruit as a low-carb oatmeal. I tend to eat it in the evening with fruit as a before bed snack or dessert.
      If you don't soak it in the liquid overnight and you just add it to Yogurt, it has a crunchy sort of texture.

    I was looking at your shepherds pie. In Australia a shepherds pie is made with lamb. A cottage pie is with beef. Because you have used beef and pork and a substantial amount of potato, it can also be considered a potato pie.

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I think a Shephard's pie is usually made with lamb but here it's called Shephard's pie when it's made with beef as well. I've heard it called "cottage pie" with beef before too. Everywhere here, at restaurants and in the grocery stores I can buy Shephard's Pie made with beef though! It always seems to be yummy regardless :D

    Chia seeds seem like natural jello to me like they thicken stuff like a pudding while they sit so I think it is more of a texture thing instead of taste. Another great week! So many great creations from what you have. Love butter wrappers. I keep them in the freezer to use for everything. So helpful to grease pans or muffin tins. I currently have too many and I have to clean out my freezer.

    I lived for years without a microwave, partially to see if I could, partially to see if I really missed it at all. Recently got a new microwave and my favorite thing to do is bake my potatoes in there for fast lunches or dinners so I don’t heat up the kitchen.
    I still don’t use it for a lot but that’s one thing I’m like “how did I live without this”

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! So you cover them in oil or butter first before you "nuke" them? I always thought that they would end up dry in the microwave so I've never tried it! I usually only use mine for reheating things rather than cooking.

      The microwave can be used to cook in too. My ex father in law use to make a wonderful chicken dish( similar to Teriyaki with whole breast) that he served with rice he cooked in the microwave also.

    Jessica I just googled this for all of us that might be out of baking powder…if you use 1/4 tsp of baking soda + 1/2 tsp of cream of tartar it is equal to 1 tsp of baking powder. You can use this in baking as a substitution for baking powder. This will only equal out to 3/4 tsp., but has same effect as one tsp of baking powder. If you are out of or just never buy cream of tartar, you might be able to buy it cheaper than baking powder…plus we all know the great uses of baking soda…if you have a discolored pan you can rub it then soak it with a little of the cream of tartar and it will bring back to its natural state. Just google substitutions for baking powder and it gives other options too. Though I think this one will probably give the lightest texture in baked goods. I would have not passed up that bag of bananas! That was a steal! You want bananas that are very ripe( even ones with black skins) give a sweeter taste to muffins and bread…even pancakes and bread puddings. Recipes you have to mush the bananas up. Freeze the ones that are still in shape and measure out the ones that are not for recipes you use measuring cups of. Label : bananas for muffins/ 3 cups then all you have to do is thaw in frig over night and put in your already pre measured dry ingredients to make breakfast the next morning.

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing Nancy! I have some baking powder...just have to pick up some baking soda next! ;) Ohhh I stared at those bananas for a looong time lol They weren't black or even brown but were still mushy which makes me think that they either got too hot or too cold being transported and I wasn't too sure about them. If there were any that looked alright in the bag I would have grabbed it I think. Next time!

    Chia seeds are used to thicken the oatmeal made with milk instead of cooking to plump it. I tried it without and won't do that again. I just have to find the chia seeds for sale. Tamari is a umami rich substance that is similar to soy but so very delicious. I don't know what it is made from but so worth the flavor and to find even more recipes to use it with. I had it only once and when I asked what was in the dressing that tasted so delicious, she said, oh that is just tamari. I really need to try that agin. So I need to add both tamari and chia seeds to my list this week. Sprinkle some mini choc chips on the breakfast oatmeal and you would have an Elvis bowl - LOL.

    Great video, as always. I was so excited to finally see it up. I was watching all day for it! Loved your homemade baked beans idea.
    To answer your question, chia seeds don't have much flavour...kind of like poppy seeds. However, when moistened, they swell up and gel which in turn makes them filling. I believe they can be a source of protein, too, but not positive. I think you can use them as an egg substitute in some recipes, similar to a flax egg. I suggest researching that a bit further, though.
    Since next week is your last week, I think you could use up some of the food you gathered over the weeks. I see a dilly potato salad as an option. You could use the salsa combined with the pasta or rice for a dish. Or maybe use some flour to make homemade tortilla wraps. I wonder if you could add the pineapple juice to a rice pudding for a different flavour. Or a pinapple banana smoothie is always an option. Bannock is always an option!😅
