Each version of this song is a different story. The original NIN is a young man having a breakdown, Cash's version is an old man with regrets, yours is an immortal who can't escape life. All so beautiful they can bring me to tears, just in different ways. Bravo, Lady von Blingen.
Ive noticed her methods for lyric changes are essentially to keep the changes minimal, and make changes make sense. So the song gets adapted to old english (which doesnt change much). But she then picks out words and phrases to change to make it period accurate. For example, guns arent a thing. So any mention of guns and bullets gets adapted to bows and arrows. Another good example, for her rendition of rising sun, she changes New Orleans to Orleans (really damn lucky the song was about a "new" city, with an old european city that shares the same name). The meaning is still the same, but it becomes about a brothel in a city in France rather than one in the nonexistent Liousiana. It seems like most bardcore covers just adapt it to old english, but dont take the time and effort to adapt the lyrics to their time period in such clever ways. She does. There is a purpose behind every change. Abaolutely meticulous.
@@hatman4818 I agree with everything you said except that this is old english. This is NOT old english. The original script of beowulf was old english, and is practically illegible to the modern person. We would not recognize many of the words. Modern English is much older than you might think.

A clever reinterpretation of the iconic original. As @spring1610 points out, your version does remind the listener of an immortal like Highlander or Captain Jack from Doctor Who. Not me sobbing in the early morning because I caught feelings for fictional characters that came to mind as Hildegard’s ethereal voice echos one of the most beautiful and painful songs. This cover is exquisite!
This is brilliant, and it completely transcends the expectation of medieval-style covers being a novelty. The way you transformed the song while retaining its soul is beautiful.
Even though this is nine inch nails' song, I always think about the Johnny Cash. I think it was Trent that said "That's his song now". I always start tearing up hearing either version, especially Johnny's. Now I'll cry to this one. Amazing cover, thank you!
The subtle change to the graphics as this progresses, from about halfway through..! I love the art for all these videos, so apt to the songs and in true medieval style, but this is just amazing.
"The fates hold out my thread, but cannot cut the string" Brilliant writing, I love the altered lyrics. I assume they might have something to do with the depicted character which I don't know, but the image of an undefeatable conquering king who's tired of effortlessly fighting and winning wars and expanding his empire comes to mind.
In other comments she indicates it's the King of the Dead (king of the Dead Men of the Mountains) from Return of the King. He and his army swore an oath of allegiance to Gondor and when they broke it, Isildur king of Gondor, bound to them to the earth until they fulfilled their vow. (So it fits in with the lyrics rather well)
Personally made me think of a lich king, but someone else pointed out that it was in fact the King of the Dead from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, hence the familiar look.
This is absolutely beautiful. One of my favourite songs and now one of my newfound favourite genres and artists. You didn't even need to change much of the second verse, and it worked perfectly.
Amazing. This song always hits me in a very emotional place. Trent's version, Johnny's version and yours - there is something kind of transcendent about it. Thank you, it's beautiful.
I love this so much! Nine Inch Nails is my favorite band and I recently watched the Johnny Cash cover for the first time and bawled. You did a fabulous job with this, in keeping with the very melancholic lyrics of the original. Your finest work to date! It's hard to sum up just how perfect this is, but I will try... On a day when nothing has gone your way. When it's rained from dawn 'til dusk. When you've received tragic news and your heart is breaking from the pain. When all seems lost and for nought... this song pierces the gloom like a golden arrow; a radiant, angelic voice that transports you away from your woes, lifting your spirits and your heart high above your troubles, restoring your faith and bringing hope where there was none before.... Thank you once again for sharing your magnificent, magical talents with the rest of us.
This is fantastic! The changes to the lyrics work great for an undead character. My immediate assumption for that character art is the King of the Dead from Lord of the Rings (Rioc).
This made me cry like a baby. I couldn’t help thinking of the Ghost King and how long he waited, regretting everything for centuries. Absolutely beautiful, as always.
Coming back to this after re-watching Higlander and paying attention to the changes in the lyrics really makes me think of a "young" Immortal after his Quickening but with no one there to tell him things and the pain he feels about not dying with his loved ones... As usual Hildegard knocks things out of the proverbial park with her covers.
"I would keep my oath," combined with the art, reminds me of Aragorn and the Dead Men of Dunharrow. How they were trapped, for not keeping their oath.

You returned in my darkest hour with a medieval version of my alltime favourite song.
Thank you for making my day
This has got to be the most beautiful cover of Hurt I've ever heard
johnny cash did a good rendition but this one is pretty good too.
This song gets me right in the feels. Every version is simply beautiful.
I love that you can appreciate them all! I feel the same way and get something different from every version.
Golly, the impact changing “know” to “love” has on that line. 🥺
Amazing cover!
You have such a beautiful voice! I just completed my annual LOTR marathon for my birthday this weekend, so the artwork is an extra special treat on top of another perfect cover. The dead do not suffer the living to pass!
With no exaggeration, you are my favourite TH-camr.
Happy birthday Josh :)
@@angeladawn805 Thank you!
@@angeladawn805 Until ageing is cured, birthday can never be happy. Unless you are a little kid that is figuratively immortal because just does not know about death.
I was thinking about the "dwellers in the mountains" as well during the song also. Glad someone already commented about it.
@@ScienceDiscoverer You don't need to bum everyone else out over your own refusal to accept death, bro.
Not saying there isn't a place for that, but just like saying "god ain't real" to someone who's mourning the loss of a loved one, it's not here.
It shows what a remarkable song this is that Nine Inch Nails, Johnny Cash and Hildegard von Blingin' could all do it and it could sound completely different each time and still be incredibly impactful every time.
A clever reinterpretation of the iconic original. As @spring1610 points out, your version does remind the listener of an immortal like Highlander or Captain Jack from Doctor Who. They know immortality is a curse not a blessing. An empire of dust, everyone always leaves and they carry on.
As always, your haunting voice adds great dramatic weight to the song.
Thank you for sharing your creativity.
Thank you! Absolutely, that was definitely my aim. Someone exhausted by living who has no choice but to carry on.
Well, if we're talking about doctor who here, I would say this makes me think less of captain Jack and more of the doctor.
Specifically post-time war and pre-day of the doctor. I mean I was literally seeing post-Doomsday Ten, after having one of his manic moments
@@jacquese.f.m.paganel1530 it reminded me of Me.
The way is shut. It was made by those who are dead and the dead keep it. The way is shut. - Tolkien. The character in the video is a specific character, and the song suits them perfectly.
Anyone else think of 'the old guard' when they hear this?
The guy changing was a nice touch I almost missed entirely. Another amazing cover
The way you handle Bardcore renditions of songs, is nothing short of astounding, the level of detail and attention you put into everything you put out is unparalleled!
Not me sobbing in the early morning because I caught feelings for fictional characters that came to mind as Hildegard’s ethereal voice echos one of the most beautiful and painful songs. This cover is exquisite!
I'm not crying it's just sweat from my eyes, I have very sweaty eyes, okay?!
Literally me
and the worst of all, this song actually played at the show that the fictional character is from
@@BlastofMoon Can you tell what that show was? Thank you!
@@Stardoll2I am not sure about this but some comments claimed that character is the ghost king from Lord of the Rings.
@@longwlenguyen4214 Thank you!
This song almost always makes me cry, and this cover is no exception. So beautiful.
Exactly, me either. Johnny Cash turned a song into a spiritual experience, and Hildegard was able to keep it that way.
"The fates hold out my thread, but cannot cut the string"
Brilliant writing, I love the altered lyrics.
"The way is shut.
It was made by those who are Dead,
and the Dead keep it, until the time comes.
The way is shut."
It's always a special treat when I get a notification of a new video from Hildegard von Blingin'.
I believe my favourite troubadour, Johannes da Cashia, covered this at some point.
He did. He even covered a song from one of my favourite troubadors, Nicolaus Cava.
Amazing! The art is always on point as well. They way it shifted with the song gave me chills.
Your best work yet! Absolutely exceptional! And very nice touch with the LOTR reference to the King of the Dead!
I have always loved Cash's cover of the song. Yours is equally good. And the changing face of the king is a nice touch.
I love this so much! Nine Inch Nails is my favorite band and I recently watched the Johnny Cash cover for the first time and bawled. You did a fabulous job with this, in keeping with the very melancholic lyrics of the original. I thought the way you kept Cash's "crown of thorns" over Reznor's "crown of s---" was fitting for the time period. I'm a longtime listener, though I think this is my first comment. Thank you for the fabulous rendition as usual!
The way the art changes over the course of this shanty reminds me of the King of the Oathbreakers from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Lyrically it sort of fits his lore, as well. Nice job, as always.
There were a lot of choices to make in adapting this song of legend, and you made the right choice every single time. Absolute perfection. I hope the entirety of the Internet gets to experience this.
I cannot believe how great this is. Your lyrics are so enchanting, the changes you've made feel so on point, and it just has THE most unique feeling
Just taking another listen at this and realizing that it gives me the same feels as Queen's "Who wants to live forever?" That deep melancholy, wrapped in major chord and gorgeous harmony. So, so good.
Please never stop making these.
It's incredible how you can turn all these amazing songs in their medieval equivalent!
I came here as fast as i could. Always a pleasure to hear your voice enchanting a new song every few months. Keep it up. You are making something beautiful.
Hell yeah, the queen returns!!! I'm so excited
Edit: Absolutely beautiful cover, well done ❤
Listen, I normally come here because these interpretations are hilarious. But this was art in its highest form. I'm on the verge of tears. Hauntingly beautiful. "The fates hold out my thread but cannot cut the string" is just the best kind of gut punch.
I was randomly recommended this today and totally expected this to be a meme-y joke and am now covered in goosebumps and emotional to the point of tears. This is so beautiful! Wonderful job!
This channel is proof: quality over quantity ❤
"The way is shut. It was made by those who are Dead, and the Dead keep it, until the time comes. The way is shut."
Incredible cover. Thank you for this.
It reminds me of your dad, Magnus.
I thought of the same thing!!!
I probably would have went mad if no one else here would have made that Association
So I'm about 10 years younger than my older brother, and this was his favorite song and I grew up listening to it. This bring back all the memories. I have to say I enjoy this cover so much!
Literal goosebumps, Hildegard.
Wonderful cover. I'd love to know what Trent would have to say about it.
After hearing Johnny Cash's version, Trent said something along the lines that it wasn't his song anymore. Hearing this version, how could you not love that voice singing it? :)
I had nearly given up hope for another release. This does not disappoint. Heavenly vocals. Gives one hope for beauty in the world!
Nothing can beat Johnny Cash's haunting version. but this one still gave me goose bumps. Well done Hilde!
Well, this is everything I've ever wanted as a NIN/Johnny Cash fan.
I can't get over how GOOD this is! It quite literally brought me to tears. ❤
Oh...the MOMENT I saw this I needed to check it out. You have no idea...Thank you Hildegard!!!
Her voice is so ethereal, and somehow gives the song another meaning.
Thank you to the algorithm for sharing me with this only 1 day after its upload instead of 1 year after. This is an astounding cover.
The dying king is a fitting touch.
I'm totally bawling with you! your angelic, clean and emotional voice is just perfect on this, nothing less. Goosebumps up and down..And I'm so happy you've uploaded another song. We definitely need more of you
Just in time, Hildegard. I was feeling overwhelmed studying for an exam, your soothing voice will calm me a bit.
Good luck!
Wow !!! This is So Beautiful !!! Now perhaps my most favorite cover of Johnny Cash's original !!! I love medieval music, so it's Doubly Perfect !!! Thanks for sharing !! xo
Nine Inch Nails is the original. Johnny's version is a cover. He did the cover at the suggestion of his producer of the American albums, Rick Rubin. The original is on NIN's album "The Downward Spiral"
and just when I needed her, she returns! thank you for bringing joy to my world, especially as it's exam season here in the uk
unreal how well it translates - I could so imagine being in an olde tavern and hearing this - very cool how the skulls fade in, very nice artistic touch and fitting
"Oooo I love these, these are hilarious." *immediate chills*
A hauntingly beautiful cover, I really appreciated the unchanged lyrics in the mix. It really gave them extra emphasis, and certainly made an argument for them being timeless. Hope you are well, take care of yourself :)
Just found out you had a spotify, I hope you choose to upload it!
Always an unexpected delight when you upload, and a wonderful job as always!
Suddenly this masterpiece was made even more beautyfull.
This is such a beautiful rendition of a deep song.
I just hope Trent somehow hears this - I think he would be highly impressed. Your voice is so pure & yet there's also all of this texture & movement within it. A rare combination.
Wow... That was very beautiful. Very well done, the voice singing Johnny's rendition of this song was spine chilling
The lyric changes recast this song as an immortal's lament, and I am HERE FOR IT.
I love the art slowly transitioning! Beautiful work!
It is always a risk, listening to a new cover of a song that you already adore. I am SO happy that I took this risk! Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you, Hildegard.
NIN hit the big-time when I was a teenager, and I loved them then. I "rediscovered" them in my collection a few months ago, and appreciate a lot of their work in a different way now.
This cover though - I'm not crying, it's hay-fever.
Beautiful, as always.
Glad to see you're still around and doing this! I was excited when I saw your community post. Had no idea it was this. Genuinely, such a beautiful cover.
Sweet, a new video of an iconic song! Thanks for you hard work!
This is so unbelievably good, your medieval covers are a blessing in my life.
The art slowly becoming the King of the Dead from LOTR was the cherry on top. Magnificent.
This is fantastic! The changes to the lyrics work great for an undead character. My immediate assumption for that character art is the King of the Dead from Lord of the Rings (Rioc).
Beautiful melody🎵🎶, beautiful voice🗣️🎤, beautiful visuals😍. The queen👸 of Bardcore has returned!🎉🎈🎊👏🤸💫
I mean, the original song is so beautiful and goes so deep, but that version gives me goosebumps
