HEAR YE HEAR YE and feast thine ears - the fruits of my labour with @BeedleTheBardcore, a Medieval/Renaissance cover of Hozier's "Take Me to Church"!
Latin counterpoint on the final chorus is from the Gloria movement from William Byrd's Mass for 4 Voices, which you should totally listen to the whole thing because those harmonies are just chefs kiss
Here's the Gloria to get you started: • Byrd: Mass for 4 voice...
Lyrics and Vocals are mine, any reposts without permission will be reported because that's just not very nice :)
Image is a rendering by Ken Hendrickson of "The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa", a sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
Lyrics and translation:
my mistress hath whimsy
she brings mirth out of misery
has all the courts denunciation
yet to worship her i hasten
if’twere true the heavens didst speak
then their prophetess is she
ev’ry sabbath seeming more bleak
new plagues on us each week
we were born to sin, thou hast heard it
Mine church offers no indulgence
she bids me worship in her chambers
the sole heaven t’will admit me
were i alone with thee
I was born base
but twas my fate
proclaim me to be pure
amen
hasten to church
i worship like a cur at thy shrine of deceit
to confess my sins, may my penance be fleet
unto me that sweetest death
mon dieu, fealty shall i swear,
laudamus te,
(we praise you)
adoramus te, benedicimus te,
(we adore you, we bless you)
glorificamus te, credo in te,
(we glorify you, I believe in you)
quoniam tu solus sanctus
(for you alone are holy)
amen miserere mei -
(amen, have mercy)
twere I a heathen in mine own right
i, the east and she the sunlight
to stay aligned with mine saviour
she demands of me favour
parch the seven seas
a bauble to appease
bring us flesh for the main course
tis a well bred high horse
what lies in yonder stable?
lo, a horde of hungered faithful
yon looks savory
yon looks plenty
tis voracious work
hasten to church
i worship like a cur at thy shrine of deceit
to confess my sins, may my penance be fleet
unto me that sweetest death
mon dieu, fealty shall i swear,
laudamus te,
(we praise you)
adoramus te, benedicimus te,
(we adore you, we bless you)
glorificamus te, credo in te,
(we glorify you, I believe in you)
quoniam tu solus sanctus
(for you alone are holy)
amen miserere mei -
(amen, have mercy)
no masters, nor kings
when the sacrament begins
there is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
in the madness and mire
of that debased scene
only then am i mortal
only then am i clean
hasten to church
i worship like a cur at thy shrine of deceit
to confess my sins, may my penance be fleet
unto me that sweetest death
mon dieu, fealty shall i swear,
laudamus te,
(we praise you)
-- Et in terra pax
-- (on earth, peace)
-- Hominibus bonae voluntatis.
-- (and to all those of good will)
adoramus te, benedicimus te,
(we adore you, we bless you)
glorificamus te, credo in te,
(we glorify you, I believe in you)
quoniam tu solus sanctus
(for you alone are holy)
amen miserere mei -
(amen, have mercy)
"t'were I a heathen in my own right / I, the East and she, the sunlight" actually goes so hard
FR it's been in my head looping bdjdb
I love how unusual this look despite being entirely serious and related to the video
Such a poetic line!
That's an allusion to Romeo and Juliet no doubt. "What light from yonder widow breaks? It is the East and Juliet is the sun."
What I learned: I want classical vocals in pop music
and latin
@@1Cosmic_Squid1 nah, too gimmicky
check out the song Komm Jesu by dirt poor robins! it uses bach's contata of the same name
Thank you for reporting your findings
@@imperialofficer6185that’s literally what’s in this song
i love how the vibe is the same but diffrent, the og song sounds like a dude trapped by religion unable to love whom he wants and so is this but it feels like a nun begging to god to forgive her for having the hots for another nun
i love it
This is actually a perfect character idea
"This song was her last prayer, in which she begged the God for forgiveness"
@ligma6898 Ooooh I am so stealing this for a ttrpg character 👀
The fact that Hozier himself would adore this... I just know he would
He's still alive why'd you say it like he's dead?
@@RichardsNickname How is that saying like the person thinks he's dead? "I know he would adore this" assumes he's alive but may never get to hear it.
@@lysanamcmillan7972Well then let's send it to him shall we? :3.
@@RichardsNickname help i was high and actually thought they meant that and started tearing up
@@lysanamcmillan7972 it's the past tense
God the fact that the part in latin has less poliphony as it wasn't incorporated in sacred music until the renaissance, making it sound even more solemm and devoted.
sure yeah i meant to do that
@@EliseRothMusic we love a good happy accident
JONNY DVILLE PFP SPOTTED??
the fact that "there is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin" is the only line that stays constant is SO,,,
seriously 😭 imo it's the most important line in the song, since it conveys what the song is all about- it tears me up every time :'3
Yes!!! It was so powerful to have that resounding line that, no matter how different the English of then and now, holds the same meaning and relevance to either listener.
Hozier time traveled with that line
2:59 for reference
Only then am I clean is another
The fact that 'The Ecstasy of St. Theresa' is the imagery makes this even more amazing. I'm only sorry it took me this long to find it.
The algorithm finally showed it to me too, so yay new discoveries!
I only found it today, but I love it.
Literally!!
2:13 "'Tis *voracious* work!" holy shit
om nom nom
I actually gasped when I heard that!
Those lines actually go hard af
Okay I’m five months late, but this is so fantastic! It’s clear that you’ve actually listened to early music and have great respect for it. Love your lyrics, love this arrangement! 🙏
lol it's ok, we're both literally centuries late to this pop music stuff anyway XD
and yeah gurl, musicology degree FTW!
I wish one of you would do an appropriate cover of Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac. Another great one would be a cover of Leonard Cohen's Joan of Arc or Hallelujah.
@@EliseRothMusic Please more of this beautiful content 😩👌
Ok I'm 2 years late but I think this is the bees knee's
@@thomashill1070 we are in agreement
You can't convince me the light beams in the picture isn't just spaghetti

Lo! Me thinketh thou art right!
All Hail! The almighty Flying Spaghetti God Monster!!!
I was touched by his noodly appendage
YES! Thank you! XD
I got a tattoo of a bust of Aphrodite with the line 'I, the East. She, the sunlight' written under it
Not only is it well translated, the spirit seems true to how people of that time would sing this song.
Most bardcore channels just use a loot, skin drums and flutes to cover songs but then don't change the melody or the tone of the song to make it truly sound medieval. But you changed the song for the better, you made melodic and harmonic changes that would be more accurate to/present in medieval pieces, AND changed the lyrics to Olde English. ABSOLUTELY Brava!
thank you so much for noticing :'D i did put a lot of work in for that stuff, glad it's appreciated!
Old English was more near to German, and it was phonetical, this is more Early Modern English. Very beautiful, nevertheless ❤
I also like the "Mon Dieu" This was a mix of Middle to Early Modern English, since the Middle English began in 1066 when the Normands conquer and added a lot of French words👌🏼 nice touch.
*lute
As great as it is, I do wonder why they didn't keep the Amen cadences (IV-I) underneath the amens in the song. That's the most medieval part of the original song to begin with.
None of the other bardcore/medieval covers even come close to the quality of this. I need more like this one
pov: youre a medieval sapphic secretly in love with your brother’s wife
Many such cases
Poor brother, cuckolded by his own sister 😔
Even ignoring the gayness, I think that’s a sin according to the Bible, but what does that old book know?
@@nettlesandsnakes9138 i mean...The old book talks about fabric for their rotting and shit but...what do i know?
The fact that this is not on Spotify is a crime
i'm starting to get converted to yt music because of banger covers like this
I think the same. I so badly want it to be on there
this Latin part just w o w
I was full Vince McMahon energy when that part hit
@@mollusckscramp4124 omg i love you for this lol
Yeah that through my off. Like!!! Damn.
This slaps, slays, conquers, decimates, eradicates, absolutely fucks
I love that we all had the same reaction to this. Like "oh wow some real effort went into this" then the latin came in and everyone just went "OH WOW". Impressive as all get out.
Twas truly an honour and a pleasure 🙏
Thine ears deceiveth me! What a wondrous consort 🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️
Hey Beedle what's sup sir
@@wjbt3 You just accused Beedle's ears of deceiving you 😂!
The "proclaim me to be pure" and subsequent "amen"s are sO GOOD I WISH I COULD EAT THIS COVER DHSJD
I too am vore-acious
Blessed be Elise Roth, Beedle the Bard, and the algorithm for this cover is purifying me as we speak. I hereby renounce my sins and the Lord can take me.
bless you my child
This is increadible. The rewritten lyrics, the instrumentation, the vocals of course - I didn't think I'd like this better than the original, but I really might! At the very least, it does the song such an honor. The "Amen" sections are absolutely haunting. I love the addition of the Latin. This is beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with us. One of my favorite songs I've heard in quite a while. 💗💗
I live the “Apologies to William Byrd” at the end.
As a Catholic, the Church Latin KILLED ME! Screaming crying throwing up on the floor can’t find the cold side of my pillow fell off of my bed broke my mamas back praying sobbing breathless…
Holy heck

This will forever be on my playlist.
I clicked on this song expecting a meme. Instead, I was blessed with a deeply passionate, spiritual experience. My jaw is permanently unhinged as I stare, mystified, lost in such beautiful music. These lyrics are poetry & the instrumental stroked my heart until I reached exquisite bliss. I've not yet known such ecstasy. I feel like I just lost my virginity.
“Lo, a horde of hungered faithful” just slaps so hard
The whole thing is so amazing and haunting. I started listening with not much expectations, but the Amen part came and then the chorus and I had literal chills. This cover does the song perfect justice. Cant get enough of it!
Thank you so much ^^
Why does this make me understand more of the lyrics from the song now
This is gorgeous. How dare TH-cam take 2 years to show me this art
Getting turnt the fuck up to this in 1515 before getting burnt at the stake ❤
I love the inclusion of indulgences. That line really helps set this in the time period.
The Catholic Church still has indulgences to this day. They just aren't monetary indulgences.
This is... probably the greatest and most creative Bardcore cover of a modern song ive heard, i especially love the latin parts, as it gives it a more church-based vibe which goes along greatly with this song
This is gorgeous and haunting, the "amen" part gave me chills - but I think my favorite part is the *creativity* in how you redid the lyrics so they still rhyme and fit the rhythm pretty damn well and still mean the same as the original! Also Latin makes me go feral so there's that
The way I NEED this on spotify. I can’t stop listening
WHEN I SAY EVERY SINGLE LINE IN THIS HITS AND HITS AND HITS!
I WAS BORN BASE
BUT TWAS MY FATE. PROCLAIM ME TO BE PURE!
This shit goes biblically hard
I am at loss for words how much I love this, I love the original but this, this is pure poetry🙌 the vocals were incredible, the Latin was genius!! This was beautiful in every aspect
thank you so much!
Yes I agree it is beautiful....btw I'm not mentally deranged just listening over and over I'm trying to learn the words off by heart 🙂💓🎼🎵🎶
Okay I took *so much* classical Latin and I sincerely appreciate your use of the correct tense. Church Latin is like nails on a chalkboard to me, but the historical accuracy of its use also makes me giddy. Just lovely ^^
Please release it for music streaming platforms.
Its absolutely geniusly composed.
I've been relistening to it for over a month now.
It's been a year, I still listen to this regularly, on TH-cam... 😅😂
Please release it on Spotify 😁🙏
I’m sorry but the quote “hasten to church” is so funny to me like adding hasten to any sentence is automatically funny sounding
Oh my goodness... This is probably one of the best Medieval covers of any current song. You just nailed everything on the head, and it is so clear that you actually have listened to a lot of music from that era... Thank you so much for making this
I know it's been two years, but I just had to say, this is absolutely amazing. Once the first note played I imediately added it to my playlist. It struck all the right cords with me, brought me so much emotion, it just hit right. It's everything I never knew I needed. Thankyou.
the ecstasy of st theresa is such an inspired piece of art to pair with this
Why did TH-cam only just bless me with this. The fuckin Credo! I’m flabbergasted. I’m in love! Ahhhh!!!!
Ooh those Amens, dude. Incredible composition and that use of latin??? God bless you my friend.
i am out of words. this is cathartic and ethereal, truly a religious experience. you have both done the original song justice and given it something new that works perfectly - thank you for this.
Tis voracious work.
I know you're English but that line was basically an Irish accent right there.
How was this only recommended to me NOW???? This absolutely boggles my mind!!!! Medieval covers usually don’t excite me since they only cover the instrumentals (no hate to those of course) but GOD. The thought out behind the lyric changes?? The fact they still rhyme and match the rhythm??? Your GORGEOUS voice!? This cover is truly a work of art!!
Holy crap, breath taking. I teared up. If you had someway to support you by downloading it, I totally would/will!
oh goodness thank you! I'm not sure, I'll have to ask Beedle for advice on how to post it for streaming!
@@EliseRothMusic Have you tweeted this cover to Hozier? He's very receptive for covers and I know for a fact he'd be interested since his early career involved him singing old Irish songs and classical pieces. Anúna was the name of one of the groups he was involved in.
Not the same, but he does appreciate older sounding music.
The bits in Latin are just **chef's kiss**
I go to a traditional Catholic Church (in France), where the Mass is given in Latin and only traditional hymns are sung, and it's the most beautiful thing. Hearing it applied to a modern pop song is pretty dang nice !
Dominus Vobiscum - from a fellow traditional Catholic from Australia 🇦🇺
PoV: You are listening to Saint Teresa of Avila's suspiciously intimate description of divine ecstasy.
I need this on spotify. I dont think I can live without this song in all my playlists
I listen to this daily. I wish this was on spotify so i could add it to my on repeat playlist. This is whats pumping whenever I enter the club.
The amens were everything. This is absolutely incredible, you’re so talented and creative!!
I wish I had 1/1000th the talent/creativity of this song. Well done.
the queen hast returneth. thank you, my lady, for this serve
For months I have been listening to this on loop whenever I am working on the computer. Put me out of my misery and upload it to spotify so that I can listen to this 24/7, nonstop 🙏
I wish this was on spotify
The first bell literally made my jaw drop. I love the internet, bless the algorithm for bringing me this gorgeous creativity.
I usually don’t comment but I’ve been waiting almost a year for a bardcore version of this song to come out and you fucking delivered. You made this song connect with me on such a deeper level I cant even explain
Ooooo it got darker than I thought it was gonna be! Great work both of you!!
The best poets realize death. When they ponder out loud, I melt. Latin took this song to the next level 🖤
Wait, why is this so good?! Like, the lyrics fit so well, and the latin came out of nowhere, but it sounds amazing!
How does this have only 390K views???!!! This is so well done with genuine talent, it deserves so much more!
shivers at the chorus... wow
is this on Spotify?? if not it totally should be because its amazing!
Dude i would exclusively listen to this genre of cover for like ever though.
The LATIN! I love it so much. Beautiful, beautiful work.
I would give my left foot for this to be on Spotify. I need this on repeat and injected directly into my veins!
THE LATIN??? GENIUS???!?!?
This is incredible the lyrics and music and old English and the Ecstasy of St Theresa, it's flawless.
It just kept getting better! Every time I thought ‘wow, this is it,’ BAM. Chills the entire time. Y’all killed this one!
Truly divine, bravo 🙏
My goodness Elise; you go from strength to strength! This is utterly brilliant
I listen to this every day and I love it SO MUCH. And I JUST NOTICED the lyric “I the east and she the sunlight” which made me think of Romeo and Juliet. “But soft what light through yonder window breaks It is the east and Juliet is the sun. “
Idk if this was an intentional reference but it fits with the theme of the song incredibly well. Forbidden love and such. IDK I JUST NEEDED TO BLAB ABOUT IT RAHHHH
There should be more covers like this
The latin part gave me goosebumps holy shit 😮
I have no idea why this was recommended to me so late but the instrumental arrangement in this is insane actually, it stands out so much compared to other medieval covers
I'm literally addicted in this
This is peak art.
oh my god i know i'm late but this is STUNNING! i envy your pronunciation and your tone is just. MWAH, marvelous! brava! bravissimo! wonderful work!
This is gorgeous, i got chills over the "amen" sections
I love this song so I was so happy to see a bardcore cover. Great job! Beautiful voice And arrangement ❤
I'm in tears. This is absolutely, indescribably incredible, I already adore the original but this just runs so very deeply into the caverns and ravines of my soul, overfilling them. 📿
The joy this brings me is immeasurable
So uh could we get like a karaoke version so I can perform this in my dnd game? Otherwise it looks like I’m memorizing this banger
THAT BEAT DROP! Excellent lyrics and song, great work!
Showed this to my medieval and Renaissance history professor the other day, and she says the Latin was almost perfect!
Of course the Latin is perfect - no offence to the wonderful woman who put it all together and sang it beautifully - because it's part of Gloria in excelcis Deo; a prayer/hymn that has been around since the 4th century; easily looked up and repurposed; all one needs do is get the pronunciation right.
Almost?? What was wrong?
Absolutely divine. Perfect for mediaeval and D&D settings
Holy fuck this is amazing- changing the lyrics so perfectly on top of changing the musical style and its just so beautiful I literally am getting goosebumps this is my new favorite version of this song- and using the imagery of st Teresa's extacy is just chefs kiss perfect with the worshipful and horney vibes of the song, especially this version and the time period even matches up
And now I have a perfect song for the villain of my next Pathfinder campaign.
This will confuse future historians
Even in the Benedictine monastery where I go to mass, you hardly hear Amens that beautiful and reverant. God bless!
i hath been using thine musical piece for amusement whilst attending to mine assignments. i thank thee for bestowing thine ethereal utterance upon us.
I got ACTUAL goosebumps to this. This is a soothing, auditory balm for the aching soul. I can only sing the highest praises for this rendition, thank you so much both of you for collaborating and making this /gorgeous/ cover. Take care, I am wishing you the best!!
The latin part was the cherry on top
My goodness! Been a while since I've been so surprised over a song! :3
oh i- i'm going to cry actually
The more I listen the more amazing it gets! The singer puts such passion into the words. The best Bardcore yet!
