I love this song! You version is an interesting blend of the original NIN version and Jonny Cash's version, I think. You opted for Cash's "crown of thorns" (rather than NIN's "crown of shit") and chose the lower and more pondering voice, similar to Cash. But the music is closer to NIN's discordant notes and your higher parst of the chorus are also closer to the original. All in all - great job! Thanks, Colm!

@@ColmRMcGuinness I just ran across you yesterday, I think. It was If I Had a Heart. I listened to it repeatedly - just wow! Johnny Cash and NIN both come out in this, indeed, but forgive me if I like Cash's version more. My parents were fans and he was so familiar to me, his story and June Carter's. This song always makes me cry as he is old and remembering those days. Getting old myself, you see. I look forward to working my way through all you have on TH-cam.
NIN's songwriter, Trent Reznor prolifically responded to Cash's “Hurt” cover with: “I wasn't prepared for what I saw, and it really then, wasn't my song anymore.”
I would say this sounds like it's sung by someone who has died and is talking to their judge in the afterlife. Their eternal existence depends on convincing the judge that their entire life counts on the plus side of the scales.
The amazing thing about this song is that Reznor's original has a completely different meaning to that of Cash's cover. Cash was nearing the end of his life and his frailty, regret and fear emanated from every note of the song. Reznor's original was a snapshot of a very dark time in his life due to substance abuse. This version somehow manages to encapsulate both versions with perhaps a little more emphasis on the NIN version. Superb cover.

Beautiful! Absolutely incredibe rendition. Literally gave me the chills in the first few seconds then blew me away with the high lift.
Perfect song for the time we live in , Have a blessed Easter.
After watching this, I went and watched NIN and Johnny Cash. Objectively, I like yours best. Subjectively, I like yours best. I’d ask why you haven’t made it big yet, except you clearly have.
It's the switch between his voices that breaks my soul. It's perfect. Emotional. Pondersome. Heartfelt. Gave a whole new perspective to this song.
This song spoke to me so much as a teen that I memorized all of it and I feel it as you sing it today thank you
woawww the voice!!!!!
Great, thanks for making me cry Colm. ♡ beautiful cover of a song very close to my heart. Thank you, for continuing to make my every day much better. You pour buckets of passion into every cover, and I feel it in my heart.
I love this song! it reminds me of Logan😥 I also really enjoyed your cover of halo, you've really inspired me to learn the cello.
Yes, and I'm inspired to buy tagelharpa. Still searching for the perfect one. Good luck with that!
That and his voice almost SOUNDS like a cello/Bass instrument!
One of my favorite songs of all time. I performed Cash's version at a talent show back in high school. Hearing it again brings out so much for me. Thank you.
I never heard this song before but you sing it so beautifully! Your range is so incredible!
I’ve been listening to this cover nonstop lately, and I will admit, there is a lot of inspiration I’ve taken away from it. Those low notes are so velvety but angelic, and the main chorus is sung with such pure emotion. The cinematic approach to such a evil tainted song makes it feel so alive and remarkable, I just can’t get enough of it. Hats off to you Colm!
The pure emotion in this song is so...Beautiful. I can't say how many times I've Relistened to this song and got Chills everytime.
This is so good, I wish we could get some Simon and Garfunkel songs like Scarborough fair
I absolutely love this song. I keep coming back to this. Can you PLEASE add this on spotify?
This has always been one of the most powerful songs to me and this cover is no exception. hits my emotions like a truck. well done Mr. McGuinness on an amazing cover of an amazing song.
amazing. this song is just so good. I love both versions, NIN, and Johnny's but This is now my third, and best of all it takes from both! love it!
What a gorgeous and strong version, I love it
This cover is immaculate. I had high hopes for this and, wow, were they blown away. Absolutely perfect
This is freaking amazing! I randomly came across your channel via your "Burn, Butcher Burn" song and I am in love with your voice! I'm currently running a D&D campaign (Curse of Strahd), and this is gonna be Strahd's theme, muahahahah! This is amazing!🤩😍
I am so happy ya did a cover of this. Cheers!
This is an amazing cover~ Just gorgeous, Colm!
I'm curious, which is your favorite of the popularized versions of this song? (I gotta confess, I'm excited about Mcguinness's....it hits more of all the right notes for me, though I really enjoy the others a *lot*).
@@rachelmartin3574 Hey Neighbor! Great to see you here! Johnny's version has a lot of pathos in it, a very emotional version for certain. But I think Colm's version is my new favorite. (and Colm looks a lot like Gary when he was younger. LOL)
Challenge taken. And yet it was super risky. Coming from me is a big compliment, I always have a lot of trouble with the covers. When Johnny Cash released his version he amazed me and I did not think that another singer could give me the creeps with this song. Thank you
Wow! This is really good! I love the use of cello and how you changed octaves partway through.
Beautiful and mesmerizing 🔥❤💯 Thank you for this Colm
