Dodgers have money, winning team, time difference to Japan and weather. But I think it is Ohtani that was the deciding factor. This idea of playing in his shadow is silly. Ohtani is the sun that illuminates all his Japanese teammates. All Dodgers games will be televised in Japan while other teams will be on Japanese TV only when they play LA. Playing next to Ohtani will give Yamamoto the maximum exposure to Japanese fans, which, to many Japanese MLB players, are their main fan base even after they come to the U.S.

I said it would be weird if he signed with anyone else. You have a chance to be on a legendary team... why would you go to the Mets? Or even Yankees? Weird to think people thought there was a chance he wouldn't be a Dodger.

I don't think most American's realize how much more alluring LA is to Japanese people than New York City. Hawaii is by far the most visited place by Japanese people but right after that is LA. Living in Japan people tell me all the time they really want to travel to California and visit LA. I almost never hear NYC or East Coast locations. Yamamoto is gonna travel back to Japan regularly so that proximity from LA is also a big deal. The extra 4.5-5hrs to NYC makes a big difference when you make that flight often.

Mets former manager Showalter said that Senga's kids were crying because Mets games weren't televised in Japan. Poor kids, but it's a true story. In Japan, televised MLB games are almost all Ohtani-related games. Going east coast is tantamount to an Antarctic exploration from a Japanese baseball viewing standpoint.

Yamamoto didn't say he wanted to be the only star of the team. It's these Americans that think that way. Naturally, Yamamoto wants to be in a star quality team and made an excellent choice. Dodgers stadium has the third largest capacity at 56,000 and have the highest attendance in baseball with more than 47,000 fans per game. Yamamoto is not afraid to be a star amongst stars. In a team sport, a strong team has better chance of winning. He can enjoy adapting to MLB.

I saw an interview with Barry Bonds back when Tim Lincecum was in his prime. Barry was asked, “If you had to face Tim Lincecum, what would you do? What advice would you give to a hitter?”
Barry responded, “Don’t swing. He doesn’t throw strikes.”
I watched every highlight video I could find of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and pretty much everything he threw was off the plate. I wonder if Barry’s advice would work for team’s facing Yamamoto? Since he has been compared to Lincecum.

  • @WolfsDE

Teams had better start making real moves right now.
Right now, the way it looks on paper...the Dodgers are the clear cut favorite to win the World Series. Probably for the next 3-5 years.
Though, I do wonder now if they plan to bring Clayton Kershaw back or if he is going home to Texas to be a Ranger or Astro or just retiring.
If any other team is hoping to be able to beat the Dodgers at this point, they need to make a few big moves.
Like, getting Snell or Montgomery or both. Probably signing Cody Bellinger and if a DH is needed JD Martinez. Or if they can't get Snell or Montgomery, making a trade for Dylan Cease.
If I am the Giants, Cubs, Bluejays, Red Sox, Mets, Phillies or Cardinals or maybe the Tigers, I am making at least a couple of moves to be able to compete.
(With the Twins lowering payroll and the Guardians doing the same, the Tigers and Royals could be in a position to win the division if they make a few smart moves, of which...the Royals have done a pretty good job at already).

Now all eyes on Roki Sasaki. He wants to be posted as soon as possible and frankly I don't think his team Chiba Lotte has the upperhand to say no. The team has zero appeal as a contender (though last season they finished 2nd in the league with only 70-68) and more like a graveyard of veterans released by big teams. Sasaki was really an anomaly. They only brought him because they hit jackpot in the draft lottery and especially because of the then manager Tadahito Iguchi, a huge baseball idol, personally convinced him to sign with them (with tons of opt-out clauses for sure.) Now Iguchi is long gone and most likely so will Sasaki.
