- In 2017, Jon Wertheim traveled to Japan to meet the then-22-year-old baseball phenom who had yet to play in the U.S. This past weekend the dual-role player, who made his MLB debut in 2018, announced he was joining the Dodgers, reportedly signing a record 10-year, $700 million deal.

And 6 years later he’s the best baseball player in the world.
He’s literally the best hitter and pitcher with runners on base
he probably was 6 years ago too. we just didn’t know about him in the US
The problem is his sensitive right elbow which he already had tommy john surgery. Injury prone.
He b the best? Who he b playin for? He in major leagues of the baseball? He is pitcher? Why he good?
The goat -tatis jr
Hes like a golden retriever turned into a person
The first time America was introduced to a literal generational talent
Centennial talent! Since Ruth there is none like him, not at that level. In fact, at this point he already surpassed him.
Yeah generational talent is actually selling him way short lol. There aren't Ohtani's every generation.
Historical talent, not generational. He's exceeded what Babe Ruth did in his short time as a two-way player, and of course the game was very different during Ruth's era. Ohtani is an athlete who transcends the sport and boggles the mind, even for those professionals who marvel at what he's able to do.
I’m agreeing with the other comments and adding a clarification- Generational would be someone like Kershaw or Trout, who’s just unequivocally the best of their generation of players. Shohei Ohtani at his best is like nothing that MLB *HISTORY* has never even seen before. If he’s close to his 21-23 production then he’s undoubtedly the best player ever.
Shohei Ohtani is the greatest baseball player to walk the earth.
NO DOUBT IN MY MIND
Exactly we'll probably have to wait another century for another Ohtani
@reynaldomacahilas3072 we will likely never see one ever again
He is no doubt a great player but my vote goes to Berry Bond.
This time can’t argue with that
He wanted a team that will let him pitch and bat, money doesn't matter. Now, he just wants to win, salary deferred. Truely a unicorn, Ohtani fan for life.
Haha I’m becoming a big fan
Same. I love Ohtani.
Fast forward 7 years, look whete he is at now. I think many people here in the states don't realize how strong he really is "mentally". He's definitely known for his god-given talent and his physical strength but not many madia talks about his mental side. He's been dealing with this type of crazy media attention since he was in high school. He knows how to deal with pressure, expectations, criticism. Thats why he never wilt under brught lights like we saw at WBC final.
His mental strength really matches his physical and natural talents thus he has became an international superstar player.
Why did you put “mentally” in quotation marks? They’re not used for emphasis. Put the word in capital letters or bold type to do that.
Agreed. The mental strength and stability/calmness remind me of Samurai spirit
7 years later and he’s won 2 MVPs and now 10 years 700 million with the Dodgers and still a humble guy!
What he wants is neither wealth nor fame, but only for his team to win. This simple way of life is the secret to success.
Ohtani doesn't chase money but money chaises Ohtani.
And fans around the world
Hideki Kuriyama is an absolute genius lmao bro developed Ohtani and went undefeated at the WBC
Agree. Seriously THAT'S someone else from Japan who should prob be over here LOL I love that guy.
He is awesome
That final face-off Ohtani had with Trout was absolutely epic. What a great event. I was in Peoria watching a spring training game and the buzz over the WBC was totally there.
and 6 years later, he doesnt care how much he makes. deferring 68 of his 70m contract, he even asked his agent if he could defer the whole contract but youre not allowed to play for free so they settled on 2m
700 million dollar man. As angels fan u will be missed thanks for wonderful time in Anaheim.
It is a nice reminder to treasure instead of trashing the virtues of hardwork, diligence, humility, honor, and just plain old fashion the core principles of meritocracy.
Exactly. No equity in talent, hard work nor in the $700 million dollar contract going to possibly best baseball player in history nor should there be.
8:59 ~
If I remember correctly, in an interview by someone talking about Shohei, he had no fascination in living the lavish, celebrity lifestyle - and just focus on baseball, and live off of the allowances of 100,000 yen per month (roughly 800 dollars per month) from his mom, who managed his money when he was playing in Japan around his rookie year, and living in the team dorm, but rarely using the money. That's one thing that I thought of when he was deferring 680 million of his 700 million contract money. He seems like kind of a person that's willing to live like a regular people, but spend time on perfecting the craft, which also connects to so many people and also be lovable at the same time.
You probably don't see that in a professional athlete in this day and age. True example of greatness and his humble roots.
Kuriyama is a legend
this aged like fine wine
Ohtani has been handsome since he was young. He has incredible talent and charisma.
🤩 He's the 700 million dollar man! Dodgers got a great deal!
I still can’t believe my dodgers got Ohtani 😭 so grateful he signed with us❤
Dude has had 2 tommy john surgeries guy will be a 700 million DH
@@robertbauman5079 Austin Barnes making more than him. What are you on about 😂😂😂😂
@@hepatitiscyalater7269, same. I am happy Shohei is on my Dodgers team.
@@robertbauman5079 Butthurt. Go cry about it.
大谷が高校生の時から始まって、三顧の礼をドジャースは誠実に、着実にしたしね。大谷翔平も元々はドジャースに行きたかったし。
Now. Ohtani has 700 reason for everyone to talk about him 😂. Best player on the planet. Humble, hard working, and a nice guy.
this interview happened in 2017, and 6 years later he is on his path to become HoF ❤❤
I love that the reporter obviously enjoys interviewing Ohtani ❤ and this was before MLB, kudos to 60 Minutes for covering Ohtani before he got really huge ❤
From the Dominican Republic congratulations chohei ohtani
Ohtani the best on the planet
It’s a testament to Ohtani that he has gotten America hooked on him without conforming to any of the American expectations of celebrity. I love the guy! I’ve never found a single thing he’s said interesting, and it somehow just makes him more endearing.
Some Americans still don’t know of him, maybe after he wins a world series
Now he’s the first 700 million man in sports history, and it’s clear that money isn’t what drives him. He’s a true baseball player and I think few in the world loves this sport as much as he does.
Just here reading and liking all these awesome comments. Shohei is not only physically strong but MENTALLY STRONG! So humble and true to his words. I will always pray for you to win not just 1 but many many WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIPS and you as the MVP!
This guy is a well disciplined professional way beyond his years he's a Legend already taking his money deferred for the betterment of the team he wants to be a winner win multiple championships and he's giving that opportunity to the Dodgers to have a dynasty by deferring his Salary
He truly was a man of his world when he said he didn't care how much he got paid. I know people will say "Yeah, but he's getting 700 mil", but the fact that he defered all but $2 mil of that so the team could go out an improve in other areas shows that he's a team first guy. Most players would've defered MAX 30 percent. I whish I was his teammate. The Dodgers are gonna be scary, especially in 2025 when he's healthy enough to pitch again.
The Manager, Kuriyama san is a genius. Than you for making this a reality!
Baseball had been looking for the guy who is so good, has so much class, totally respects the game, that he transcends baseball. Even non baseball fans become Sho fans.
Kudos to that intelligent coach. He knew Ohtani could be way better than that.
He is soooo loveable i can’t dislike him at all
Seeing this after he signed for the Dodgers, its just insane how he stayed consistent to his words.
I saw this years ago and he went to Angels and became a huge fan. Became more of a fan when he went to my beloved dodgers
Thank you Japan for a such a Gem. Reminds me of Mamba 🥲
SWEET PRINCE SHOHEI💙
That coach is great
This kid will be a hall of fame!
Hes the greatest player ive ever seen.
What a humble guy
First of all he is just so handsome omg
Shohei has not lived up to the hype, he's proved that the hype was a vast understatement. Ohtani is not just rewriting the book of baseball, he's creating an entirely new library that will be talked about in awe for the next hundred years and beyond. $700,000,000 will be the best bargain the Dodgers ever got in their history. GO SHOWTIME!
Well said, but it's probably even still not just yet enough when it comes to Shohei Ohtani, especially in the next chapters of his careers and life.
I am a Giants fan. Even though he signed with our rival, I will always root for Ohtani's success... just not when he's facing us lol. And, his $700M contract feels like a steal considering how much money he will bring in jersey, merch, and ticket sales alone. We aren't even talking about sponsors and ad buys yet. With his humility, work ethic, and kindness, he deserves all of his success. I am glad Ohtani's the face of baseball right now.
I’ve been a fan for 4 years. Now he’s on my teams (Giants) rivals. 😢 I will always cheer for Ohtani!! 👏🏼👏🏼
-- Ohtani is like MJ. you may not like the Bulls but when MJ showed up, you just have to watch the man play.
@@jlui21 exactly!
Dang
Life long Dodger fan since the 80s... this is unreal!
Oh my word. This is such a great cover on Ohtani! His personality now and mindset were already there at age 22. All he wants is to be the best form of himself. What a talent. What a person. The best in baseball!
What’s better about Ohtani too is he seems like a genuinely good dude, a good teammate and is very respectful. Everyone should look up Ohtani meeting Ichiro. You could see the little kid in Ohtani meeting up with one of his idols.
Japan is making Baseball Great Again
Truth is he is so atletic he could play almost any position on the field, plus pitching.
12:53 "Personally I don't care how much I get paid, or how much less I get paid because of this..." Ohtani is either Baseball God, or a forever-10-year-old baseball kid. His sprit is so pure. Check out what he said before this historic 700-milion contract. He initially said to his agent: "What if I defer all my salary so that my team has a better chance to compete?" This comment just shows how hungry he is for the playoff! To him, the top priority is always baseball. Everything else, even money and women, is secondary.
女性が泣いてしまいますよ😢😅
I LOVE YOU SHOHEI😍😍😍
I will follow ohtani wherever he goes. I hope truly understands that he is the greatest player to ever live.
He probably will when he retires. Until then, he will only work to become greater. He knows the key to greatness is to work harder than anyone else at improving yourself and never bathe in your glory until the fat lady sings.
False idols you follow

When shohei officially hangs it up someone is going to make the greatest sports anime ever seen by just looking back at his career
Everyone is talking about SHOHEI OHTANI.
new star⭐
He's no a new star,he's been a superstar over th last 4 years
Wow 👏 I think I like him even more now, after watching this. As a Dodger fan living Orange County I followed him and wished that one day I could see him in Dodger blue. Looks like that day is Today @ 3pm as he gets formally introduced as the newest Dodger. Viva Los Doyers!!
Ohtani sugoi ❤
Shohei Ohtani deserves every penny of his contract.
He's a "once in a generation" talent! We may not see another one like him for another 100 years!
There were Babe Ruth, Shohei Ohtani, and...
...and Ohtani Shohei
A generation is about 25 years I think.
Ohtani is the GOAT...and like Curry in the NBA turning a 3pt shot into a layup, Ohtani may have opened the door to another 2-way player down the line.
…Just going to forget Barry Bonds?
Once California taxes come into play, he’ll likely get about half of the $700M after the 10 years are up. He’s not going to get the whole thing. 😒
Hope the Dodgers will invite Kuriyama San to his first game and when he wins his first WS
He won't win a W.S. unfortunately
I'm wishing Mr. Ohtani the best with the Dodgers. The Dodgers are an iconic brand and it seems fitting that such an iconic athlete like Mr. Ohtani is signed to play with them beginning the 2024 season. I hope he will accomplish his goals of winning a world series and add to his legacy as the greatest to play the game. I may be a little bias too being a Dodgers fan myself, but regardless, I think Mr. Ohtani is the best.
Really hope he can stay healthy. He's got a BLINDINGLY bright future.
CBS, thank you for putting this on TH-cam. I subscribed to CBS All Access a year ago looking for this interview and was quite disappointed when it wasn't part of the archive.
Best player in baseball, playing for the greatest team in baseball. Welcome to the Dodgers!
Caught this when it first aired and just rewatching it.
As an Angel fan its bittersweet.... sucks BAD to lose him (especially to the Dodgers).
But on the other hand, its better for everyone that he ends up there. This guy is way to special to waste away on the Angels (sadly).
Baseball is far better off seeing this guy go to October every year.
As a dodgers fan I promise we’ll take good care of him
@@emmajohnson7216 Thank you from Japan!
君はいい奴だな。😊
Respect 🫡
Ohtani is beyond special! This man brings the world together to see baseball. Definitely tuning in when he plays
Edit: the fact that he’s pretty humble, makes him stand out even more
CBS、thank you for this interview with Ohtani👏
Go Dodgers!! Coming from a lifelong Angels fan
😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲
Shoutout to Nipponhams for drafting him and allowing him to do both hitting and pitching. Opened up the road for where we are now 🙏 Much Love and Respect
Now a Dodger. Awesome!!
What gem of a story 60 minutes has here. I bet they were hype to repost that following that insanely large contract lol it’s like Kuriyama created this mythical beast in a lab somewhere.
Side note, I wish I could go back to the original post and read the comments because I can’t even begin to imagine how many people were scoffing at the idea of him succeeding at both sides of the ball the way he has. “ pitching, and hitting in Japan is great and all but no way he’ll both in the majors” I can’t imagine how many of those comments existed.
I can't wait for the sequel segment
$700,000,000 worth. He puts butts in the seats. At 69, I have been watching the great ones for years. Yes Mickey stood right in front of me in old Yankee Stadium. The best all around I have been fortunate to witness.
SHOHEI OHTANI😍😍😍
He’s the UNICORN 🔥🤘💯. We will never ever see another player like this ever again. So be proud that we got to see this in our lifetime and we will never ever witnessed this ever again.
RESPECT!!!
MVPs in the Japanese league, Two MVPs already almost 3, and one WBC MVP, and maybe now with the Dodgers one or two more MVPs maybe a Cy Young, Babe Ruth has competition as a mystical character.
Babe Ruth was never like this, the level before was so low, he was playing against farmers
I will selfishly miss seeing him playing on the Angels, since he would come to Seattle more often and I could see him play every year. In fact, I saw him pitch this past April and he was spectacular!
Japanese culture is so disciplined. That's why great ballplayers are coming out from there.
To be fair japanese culture is not a monolith
Besides Jackie, Ohtani might be the only Dodger jersey I’d ever own
Good documentary.
Thank you for featuring Shohei Otani!
He was a dodger from the beginning look at the blue 😂
Wow, thank you for re uploading this gem!! 💎 Amazingly well done piece and aged beautifully!
How can you not love this guy. He's the same before he was world famous as he is now. He is a great player good role model and deserves the money the dodgers invested in hiim. Hope he can stay healthy, but if not he's a great guy and player anyways.
6 year later, Shohei and Kershaw are teammates
What a manager Otani had back in japan !
"Japan's Babe Ruth"... that's insulting considering how much better Ohtani is. Babe Ruth only played against white players. Ohtani is absolutely killing it in todays game where the skill level is far higher and talent is far more diverse
The atmosphere in those baseball games are wild!
"A guy who throws a 101 and hits home runs, sound like a comic book character", Dude is Shigeno Goro in real life.
8:53 Reported salary of $2 Milliion dollars! 6 years later, 60 minutes predicted this accurately!
so the salary doesn't really change from his time at Fighters to Angels to Dodgers 😅😅
いつも自然体でいつも謙虚な大谷くん
He’s such a great addition to MLB!!
13:16 Kodai Senga👻
Japan's Babe Ruth? More like America's Shohei Ohtani.
This aint even close boy. 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
As a Jays fan this hurts.
I Googled Unicorn and Shohei popped up.
Welcome to the Dodgers! We’ve been waiting for you 🙏
He’s quite adorable. Glad he’s doing welll now and with the right and smart coaching will have an even more amazing and long lasting careee
And now he’s a DODGER !! Yay ! I can’t wait for Opening Day 2024 ! Let’s Go Dodgers !!!!! ⚾️💙🧢
