  • G'day everyone! In today's video we go fishing for Mackerel, and along the way we show you how we are catching them. We give you information on rigs, baits, lures, and techniques to go and catch yourself some Spanish or Spotted Mackerel.
    As well as being a great sport-fish, Mackerel are usually easily accessible, being caught on reefs not far outside coastal bars, and if you are keen on keeping a fish for a feed, they are extremely tasty and leave you with plenty of meat.
    If you think this video could help someone you know, SHARE it with them!! If you enjoyed this video, don't forget to SUBSCRIBE for more, give it a LIKE or COMMENT what you thought! :)
    Cheers and tight lines, Will.

    Another thing I like about your channel Will, is that you always seem to take the time to reply to your followers. There is nothing nicer than to get a reply, no matter how short, to acknowledge our existance. I realize it would be impossible for someone with 500k followers to do this in all fairness, but I am just highlighting what I think is great about your channel, as a bit of feedback for you. I'm sure a lot of the guys in here would agree with me.

      Thanks so much for the kind words and feedback mate 🙌 I'll always try to reply to everyone, it's part of why I enjoy it! It's such a blessing to have people support me. I love to give tips and advice too. Plus, I love chatting to you and the other people that regularly comment! It's good to hear from you mate, it will be an awesome day when I see you out on the water 🙌👍

      HoppingMad...To be fair, Will does his share of bossing around..lol. It seems to be (and this is reasonable) whoever has the fish on has control, and is "entitled" to call the shots, that way, if he loses the fish, he can't blame anyone else. ha ha ha . I love the relationship this Father and Son team seem to have. It's awesome.

      Hahaha that's a couple of times now that you've been the first! 😉 Cheers mate. The good thing about Mackerel is, over Summer they aren't hard to get to! If you can get to those close in reefs off the Seaway (the bait reef, 12 or 18 fathoms) and float a few pilchards or livies you're in with a chance mate! Even without a sounder you can do it.
      Yes mate we're doing well, I hope you are too! Thanks for watching and commenting as always Graham, and hahahaha yes he's had a little bit of practice over the years 😂😂

    A rod holding rocket launcher on your Bimini would go a long way to clearing your deck and preventing damage to your gear. Nice vid!

      @willkitching  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate, yeah I’ve been trying to figure out a way to clear the rods off the deck! The only thing is, the bimini is foldable and a lot of the time when snapper fishing we put it down to slow our drift down with the wind. But I will think of something hopefully 😂 thanks for the comment Adam I appreciate it mate 🙌🎣

      @@willkitching mine is foldable too, I got one that attaches to the poles and over the canvas and slides up and down with the Bimini. Holds 6 or 8 rods…I’m even thinking of running some light riggers off it :) anyway I’ve broke enough gear for both of us so thought I’d mention it to ya. Fish get expensive when you break rods/tips/eyes etc

      @willkitching  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'day mate! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! 👍 Yeah Palmy gets absolutely hectic, we mainly fish gravel patch or off the Seaway. We mainly anchor at Palmy because there are so many boats, plus that way you can start a burley trail easier. We also anchor on gravel patch sometimes if drifting isn't working. Off the Seaway we start drifting as well, but anchor sometimes too. Just whatever is working on the day mate. We also sometimes slow troll dead baits for them on wire 👍 hope this helps, tight lines mates and thanks again for watching

    Hi Will. Loving your vids and hot tips. I’m just getting into offshore fishing but no luck yet.
    My question is: When floating pilly’s are they meant to be skimming and jump around on top of the water? That’s what mine seem to do and it doesn’t feel right. I let out about 20-30m of line.

    • @willkitching
      @willkitching  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate, thanks for the comment! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos and hopefully they are helping 😁👌
      When floating pilchards, they shouldn’t be skimming on the surface. Are you driving your boat while this happening?
      To float pilchards, you should just drift or anchor over the reef, and it’s as simple as casting them and leaving your reel in free spool, or slowly feeding out line and they should slowly sink down through water column. Sometimes if there is a lot of current when you’re anchored, or wind when you’re drifting, you may need to put a small ball sinker on your line which runs straight down on top of the hooks to help the bait slowly float down rather than be pushed up to the surface.
      I hope this helps mate and if you have any other questions just ask away! I’m always happy to help 😁👍🎣 tight lines Simon

    • @simonspata642

    Hey mate I’m curious to know where you go fishing in the Gold Coast, and do you use any other baits for mackerel? Cheers

    • @willkitching
      @willkitching  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ali! We head out from the Gold Coast Seaway mate, as it’s the safest bar compared to the others, and has plenty of great fishing options out from it.
      For mackerel, popular reefs are Palm Beach reef and Gravel Patch, which are right near eachother. These aren’t far out from shore at all (only a couple of kilometres) but it is a fair distance down along the coastline from the Seaway. Gravel Patch is around 18km, and Palm Beach is around 20km but these are great spots for mackerel.
      Mermaid reef is also down that way and is right in close to shore, but it isn’t as far. It is also good for mackerel at times but is a smaller patch of reef. It is around 12km from the seaway from memory but I’m not too sure.
      Closer back to the Seaway, the 12 fathom reef is a great spot for mackerel, only a few kilometres out from the Seaway. This is usually best from January onwards. The 18 fathoms is a couple of kilometres further out, but is also good.
      The last spot that is awesome for Spanish mackerel in particular, is Diamond reef (the 24 fathoms). It’s around 8km out I think, and 40m deep. This is a great spot for other species as well like Wahoo and Tuna, but the Spanish mackerel school up in large numbers here at times!
      These are all my go-to spots mate, and they aren’t too far from eachother so you can run between them if you have to try and look for fish.
      In terms of bait, we use whole pilchards mainly, or if we are trying for a Spanish we sometimes use whole yakkas or slimy mackerel (dead or alive works) floated out.
      We don’t use a sinker in close, but out on the 24 fathoms where it’s a bit deeper, we sometimes use a tiny ball sinker and set our bait down around half way to the bottom.
      I hope this helps mate!! Tight lines 🙌🎣

    Nice! Do you put weight on your gang hooks when floating the pillys?

    • @willkitching
      @willkitching  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Matt!! And no we just tie the leader straight onto the gang hooks mate, leave the bail arm open and let a bit of line out and then leave it in the rod holder 👌
      For Snapper though we'd use a sinker so that it floats slowly done to the bottom !
      Thanks for watching mate hopefully you get onto some Mackerel this summer! 🤙

    Does a plastic with some thick wire work? Or is it counter productive if you are chasing snapper?

    • @willkitching
      @willkitching  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate! Yeah it's a tough one hey! I think putting a bit of wire in front of the plastic would stop most bite offs from Mackerel, but I do think that it would deter Snapper somewhat. I know that when bait fishing for Mackerel, a lot of the time wire deters them as well and I think Snapper would be the same, or even more fussy. Luckily most of the time where we fish, it is either specifically for Mackerel or specifically for Snapper but we also fish some areas where there are both. I think it's best to start with no wire on the plastic, but obviously if the Mackerel are hitting it and biting you off every time you could definitely try one with wire! Livies are another interesting one, fish are more likely to hit a live bait with wire rather than a dead bait on wire. Even Snapper sometimes! Hope this helps mate, tight lines!
