WHAT WAS HAPPENING?! | Big Fish Action Close To Shore
Hey everyone - what on Earth was happening here? Make sure you leave a comment and let me know your thoughts!
In this video we head out in some messy seas to target reef fish like snapper, tuskfish, pearl perch and grassy sweetlip in close off Mooloolaba. Whilst the fishing was tough, we found a couple of really nice fish before heading in to some shallow reef to chase a few squid. On the way, we run across some BIG fish busting up, and chaos ensues when we start casting lures at them.
I hope you pick up a few tips and enjoy the action!!

WOW, just WOW... This is one of the most epic fishing moments we've ever had!! While fishing the reefs off the Sunshine Coast, we happened to hook up to a monster fish that is very rare to catch on rod and reel this far south! They are a lot more prevalent on the Great Barrier Reef and other northern areas. It's definitely a fish to cross off the bucket list, and it's one we will never forget. ...

Great video mate, my old stomping grounds from 30 years ago, love watching your content 👍
Hey Will, I’ve just moved to Gold Coast from WA and am finding your videos so helpful, thanks heaps. Just wondered when you’re on the drift and doing a few passes of the same mark if you ever use burley? Typically in WA we anchor up and burley for snapper but I’m guessing there’s no point burleying on the drift? Thanks again for the great videos, my boat arrives early NY and I can’t wait to get out there!
Could you guys take another fella out just getting into fishing always spear fished but now just starting fishing and using lures and would be bloody awesome to get some tips and guidance cheers
Thats a winner bait for sure
@@EndlessWeekendFishing Yeah flesh baits are definitely hard to beat most days hey mate, apart from livies! 😁👍
Great video Will, plenty of great tips there. I might have to downgrade my tackle and do some finesse fishing :)
That we're pretty big fish and with 30 lb braid, it probably didn't cope and just snapped the leader!
Hey mate, yeah they were definitely solid fish! The braid broke twice but then held up the third time so it’s hard to know what was going on 😅 Oh well, everything is a learning curve! Thanks for watching and commenting, tight lines mate 🎣
@@willkitching yeah that's right that's what keeps us all coming back
Giant barracuda mate haha. Or sharks. This was a great video. It shouldn't be hard to replace the handle on the reel. They are a great reel. Look after them they will look after you. You can't help the handle breaking on a big hookup. Well done, both of you 🙌🏻👌
Yeah I didn’t think about barracuda actually!! I still reckon it was going too hard to be one of those, my guesses would be longtail tuna (bluefin) or a wahoo maybe 🤔 could have even sharks though, who knows! Thanks for the kind words about the video, I’m glad you enjoyed! Yeah we replaced the handle on that reel and it’s good to go again, that reel has been going for probably 20 years 😂 they’re awesome 👌 Thanks again mate, I hope you’re doing well
@willkitching yes. Doing well mate. Christmas break coming. Looking forward to checking out the block over the break. Do some fishing as well. Local waters are fantastic for fishing. Hope you Christmas mate. And the family. And plenty more fishing haha
What a great night mate. I do love a good feed of whiting. Especially the kg's They all taste amazing. 👌
Thanks heaps mate! Yes I’d love to come down to catch and eat some King George Whiting one day! I reckon they’d be awesome. Bigger fillets too 😉👍 thanks for the support as always 🎣
@willkitching we just picked up some land mate where we can catch them straight off the beach. Also there is no snapper ban where we bought. The problem is that it's on an island where we have to ferry over haha
some great catches!
Thanks heaps mate!! Definitely some nice tasty critters mixed in 😁👍
Seemed like a good mackie run to me,
G’day mate, yeah it definitely could have been! I think if it was a Spanish it would have been a really big one, as this setup handles the school size 6-8kg models with ease. Sadly we’ll never know! 😩😂
damn that was a train 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😂😇
@@juanapellido1345 It was definitely going hard mate!! I wish I got to see what it was 😂🔥
Some good fish there Will, even on a bad day its a good day 👍
Thank you mate! Yeah we we’re definitely still happy with a grassy, a couple of big pearlies, and a few squid for a feed. Sometimes you’ve just gotta give it a crack and see what happens! Cheers 😁👍
Haha the handle too, sounds familiar. Lol
😂😂😂
I think it was a Chinese jet at that speed. 😲 that was so quick and out, maybe Spanish?
Hahaha it was definitely travelling at a rate of knots!! Not sure if it was a jet or spy submarine 🤔😂 At the time I was thinking maybe they were Spanish, but even then I think they would have had to be BIG Spanish to run like that. Maybe they were just absolutely monstrous longies? The one that swiped my lure beside the boat was well over a metre. It always hurts when you don’t get to see them! 😩😂
penn proudly made in China. What else would you expect 😂
I'm gonna say your BS like really BS and don't understand what Ur on about fool Penn is an amazing brand I've had Penn rods for years that's a person's care for the rods fault not Penn BC all my Penn stuff out lasts my other expensive gear just take care of Ur stuff not hard and also everything is made in china nowadays so where U getting that from idiot
Hahaha 😂 To be fair to this reel though, we’ve had it for a longgggg time and it has caught countless amounts of fish, which for the price of Penn Spinfishers is pretty good I reckon 😅 we’ve replaced the handle and the reel is ready to go again for the pelagics this summer 😎😂 Cheers mate, hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching as always 🙌🎣 tight lines
I lost three really good fish a while back to broken braid over two trips. At first, I thought as you did, that the braid had been damaged on the previous trip. When I lost two good fish on the next trip I started to investigate properly. It turned out to be a damaged guide which was causing the braid to break. I rubbed dental floss around the inside of the guides to find the problem. Nice perlie, what depth did you get that in?
Hi mate, I didn’t think about that actually! I’ll check the guides on that rod, however you’d think if it was being damaged by one of the guides, it would have broken during the Mack Tuna fight too since it was going back and forth through the guides for 25 minutes. Thanks for the tip, dental floss is a good idea too! It’s always frustrating losing big fish! 😅 The two pearlies were in around 30-35 metres of water, which is quite shallow! When we fish off the Gold Coast, we never seem to get them in that shallow, however on the Sunshine Coast we have been getting a fair few solid ones in 35-40m the past couple of years. Thanks again for the comment and support mate, keep up the great videos yourself 😁🎣
Good job! Enjoy all your vids.
Thank you mate! I really appreciate that and I’m glad you enjoy the videos! Tight lines 😁🎣
Spanish macs?
Hey mate, yeah they definitely could have been! I’m not too sure, it has really puzzled me. There were definitely heaps of predators feeding on the bait, and those screaming runs were insanely fast, so big Spanish Mackerel is a good guess! I’m spewing I didn’t get to see them. Going by that run, I think if it was a Spanish it was a really big one 😅 Thanks for the comment mate, I hope you enjoyed the video 🎣👍
Good one mate good fish and runs few wahoo or mackerel there 👍👍👍👍👍bugger about the handle breaking and Sod’s Law it’s a Mac tuna hahahahha. I reckon mackerel were biting the knots braid straight to lure winding fast doubt they’d see any braid 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Cam! Yeah I definitely saw something absolutely flying across the surface at one stage which I instantly thought was a wahoo or something, but who knows. I’m puzzled! It could have been big longtail and damaged braid, or something like mackerel hitting the leader knot. I’d never thought of running braid straight to the lure before as we’d never had an issue with it before, I wonder if they would still hit that haha! Sometimes they’re fussy and sometimes they’ll hit anything. I can’t wait to get into some mackerel soon either way, thanks for the support on every video mate 😁👍🎣
@ I’ve had a few leaders bitten off and had tailor bite swivels off whatever it was was a bit of fun while it was connected 👍👍👍👍👍👍
@@CamBill Yeah for sure mate, fish with sharp teeth can be bloody frustrating sometimes hey! 😂 It would have been interesting if it stayed connected, because I reckon that reel handle would have broken halfway through the fight 😂👍
Hi Will Thanks, heaps for your tips. I followed your instructions today and it worked. In short, my rod with pink glow made my day. I went to Caloundra wide. It was hard going but your ‘trick’ worked: Snapper 70cm, Tusk fish 35 and …. monster Grinners. I never believed in soft plastics but it looks like it is time to reflect and persist. Anyway, thanks again Will. Arek from Greenbank
Hi Arek, wow that’s absolutely awesome!! I’m so glad that the tips and technique worked for you. 70cm is a great snapper, it would have fought hard! Well done mate!! It’s cool that you made the trip up to Caloundra from Greenbank too - we live in Ipswich so we have to drive to the coast to go fishing too. It’s amazing how effective the soft plastics really are when used correctly, especially for species like snapper. Now that you’ve got the hang of it, I’m sure you will have more success into the future too 😁👍 Sometimes when we fish out in deeper water like 60m, we have to use a 5 inch soft plastic and a heavier jig head like 5/8oz or 3/4oz. Thanks so much for the comment mate, this is why I love to make the videos and share information 🙌🎣 tight lines!
berley up and go for bream.
Hey mate thanks for all the comments on the video! We personally don’t really like to eat bream, and would rather focus our efforts on finding whiting! I’m sure if you started a berley trail, all sorts of species would show up 😁👍 cheers
catfish rays and eels... home time. No bream, bit strange, nor flathead.
Haha yep, when those stinky things show up it’s time to head home 😂👍 we’ve caught a few flathead in this spot before but I thought there would be more hanging around. It’s the perfect area with lots of bait around!
adding drags is just more to go wrong, your hand works better than ANY drag with experience. You can drop it in sand and salt and mud and water and it never stops.
Yeah we agree mate, the Alveys are bulletproof! Salt, sand, and no issues. They’re fun to use top of course 😁
you on the ALVEY as well. Real fisherman.
I love them mate! Don’t see many people my age or younger using them these days sadly 😁👍
Dads on the ALVEY, champion !!!! The ONLY reel. buy one for life and hand it on to the billy lids
Yep too right! The ones I’m using currently have been passed down from my grandfather and father, makes them even more special 👍
always tend to slow wind if they are not ferocious
Yes mate, good stuff. It’s a killer technique for whiting and flathead that’s for sure!! Cheers
Is this up sunny coast ways mate somewhere 😉
Hey mate, yes it’s up that way 😅 I don’t see a whole lot of people targeting whiting up there these days, however there are some great spots around the passage, up the shallow creeks, and a few in a couple of the rivers too. 👍🎣
Crabbing? Anytime soon
Hey mate, yes I’m planning to do a fair bit of crabbing over the warmer months! I’ve been itching to get out and chase them again ever since my last mouthful of crab - they’re so delicious. Stay tuned for some crab vids soon hopefully 😁👍 cheers mate
@willkitching wit all this rain mate they are on the march 😎
Good session there mate the blubberlips go hard hahahahaha
Thanks Cam! Yeah you can say that again, it was only in shallow water too. It gave dad a good run for his money on the Alvey! 😂👍
Iodine bream
Good to see our spot is still putting out. Got a good haul the other day
That’s awesome to hear mate, it’s hard to beat whiting fishing! Hope you enjoyed the feed, thanks for the comment 👍🎣
Hey will what moon phase where you guys fishing and was moon risen.?
Hey mate, we were fishing around the full moon in this session and we did fish through the moon rise. We were thinking that could be when it fired up, but it seemed to have no effect on this particular night. It could just be a day time spot, who knows! We’ll keep experimenting 🤔😅 cheers
Where do you get your hats from
Hi mate, the brand is called ‘GoSo’ I believe, we got them from BCF back in the day but they don’t make them anymore sadly! We are in the process of buying some new ones too, so we’re looking at different brands at the moment. Might have to produce a few of my own someday soon 🤔😅🎣 sorry I couldn’t be more help. I think Oakley have a good hat similar to these, maybe check those out 👍
nice work great to see
Thank you mate, I appreciate the comment! We love heading out whiting fishing together 😁🤙
1st to comment what do i win please?
@@KerryThompson-e5g Hahaha thanks for clicking on the video so quickly mate!! There’s a chance I might have a giveaway coming over the next couple of months, stay tuned! 👍🎣
Just remember the boat going up and down makes the bottom look like it’s going up and down or jagged
Yes mate that’s a great point, I forgot to mention that!! Cheers 👍🎣
Great vid mate. One of the few people not trying flog high end stuff. 👍🎣
Thanks heaps for the comment mate and I’m glad you enjoyed the vid!! We try to make the videos as down to earth and relatable as possible, so people watching see that they can go out and do this stuff themselves. I really do appreciate it, tight lines 😁🎣
@ All good Will. You keep making them... and I'll keep watching them! Pick up my boat early next year (had a few in the past... but not for a while.)... so hope to get onto a few here in the West. Cheers 🍻
@ Thanks mate, it means a lot! 🙌 That’s awesome that you will have a new boat soon!! I bet you’re super keen to get for some adventures and fishing trips in her. 😁 Keen to hear how you go when the boat arrives, WA definitely has some great fishing by the looks of it! Good luck and tight lines mate 🎣
Nice video mate , that is a basic sounder are you on the mono on your overhead reels
Thanks heaps mate! Yeah definitely simple and old school, but it’s amazing how well it shows fish. It still shows detailed arches and stuff when we sound up bigger fish! 👌 We run braid mainline with a fluorocarbon leader mate. We started off with mono but find that since it’s thicker and floats, it doesn’t cut through the water as well and you end up with a heap of line out especially when fishing deeper water. If there is a bit of current or even wind pushing your drift along, the water seems to catch the mono a lot more. A lot of people say that you need it for float lining but we have never had any issues with using braid, and can keep our line more vertical straight down with braid! Cheers mate, tight lines 👍🎣
@ Cheers mate love your work tight lines Dave 👊👊
@ Straight back at you Dave, it’s always good to see the fishing adventures you’re getting up to! Cheers mate 🎣👍
Always enjoy your content, Will 👌. Love how u guys keep it simple.
Thanks John we really do appreciate that! I’m glad you enjoy the videos mate, I try to keep things as simple and down to earth as possible. Can’t wait to make plenty of videos over Summer 😁 tight lines and thanks again 🎣
OH MY GOD!!!!! I've been champing at the bit to watch this video and finally got some time to do so this morning. Wow, such an awesome end to the day. Such a cracking fish and to get that on the SS coast is madness. Your coverage on the Klik Sinkers is amazing on this video so thank you so much for that. Did I see a Klik Sinker in front of the trout? Well done mate, I love the passion you have for fishing, it makes for awesome viewing. I'll look forward to the feedback on the Klik Site.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video mate! Thanks for your support as always, the Klik Sinkers have been a fantastic addition to our tackle box, accounting for many fish over the last couple of years! We couldn’t believe it when that trout hit the surface, it’s definitely a memory we’ll never forget!! Funnily enough it was the only fish all day that we didn’t catch on a Klik Sinker 😂 we had a bit of trouble with sharks and mackerel biting us off at one stage, so I tied on a regular lead sinker for the last few drops. The lumo Klik Sinker has been a favourite of mine for reef species though! 👍🎣 I hope people go and check them out, thanks heaps mate 😁
@@willkitching Haha, typical. That big girl with a Klik Sinker hanging out of her mouth would have been on every promotion I ever did in the future haha. Thanks again for the great support and supportive words above. It means a lot to hear people are having success on the sinkers, I need to get back out there and do some more product testing pronto. Talk soon, Scot.
See, this is why I like you and your videos so much. You keep it basic with the use of basic equipment. Not everyone can afford the top of the range gear, and you just prove that it's not required. And you're so lucky to get such a calm day, I have been out in those conditions for months. Keep doing what you're doing🍻
Thanks heaps for the comment Flippa! We try to be as down to earth and relatable as possible mate, so that’s awesome to hear. We always try to preach that you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on all the fancy gear that you see on TV to go out and enjoy catching some great fish! Yeah the weather lately has been atrocious most days, especially weekends! We are finding it hard to get out too, fingers crossed it clears up soon for us both! I hope you’re doing well Flippa, hope to see you out on the water one day soon 👍🎣
Thanks for the vid Will. What a fish your bro caught, you all looked over the moon
Hey Flippa, great to hear from you and I hope you enjoyed the action! We couldn’t believe it when this fish came to the surface, it’s definitely a moment we’ll never forget!! Matt did well 😁👌 thanks for the support mate
Flying fish?
Hey mate, there can be flying fish around this area at times! However they don’t usually splash like this, maybe something was trying to eat a flying fish 😅👍
You're bang on Will, doesn't matter how good your sounder is, need to be able to use it and interpret what different fish types look like. Thanks for putting the video together.
Thanks heaps for the comment Ophet! Yeah that’s it mate, all sounders are slightly different and it takes some time on the water to figure it out and learn what to look for! I hope you’ve been getting out for a fish lately mate, thanks for your support 🙌🎣
That’s a great video Wil. The info on how you use the sounder was really helpful. Including discussions on how you program and interpret your sounder when chasing different species in some future videos would be popular with lots of us who are keen but still on a learning curve. Keep up the good work. Jim
G’day Jim, thanks for watching and commenting mate, I appreciate the support! I’m glad you found the video helpful. I’ll definitely consider those topics for future videos when talking about the sounder, I think that a lot of people would benefit from that as you said. I’m planning to go more in depth in terms of sounder skills, and I’m hoping to figure out a better way to record the sounder screen too in the future! Thanks for the advice mate, I hope you’ve been getting out on the water lately. Tight lines! 😁👍
Turn ya gain down a bit buddy. Way too much cluter. Your literally marking plankton
Yeah I’ve considered playing with the gain, however there are smaller/less dense shows of fish that we look for at times and I think we’d miss them altogether by turning the gain down. For example the smaller school of snapper at the start of the video. Each sounder is different and we are happy/confident with our settings as they are currently. If we weren’t seeing/catching fish I’d be more worried haha. I still might look into it and have a play around but I’m not too fussed. Tight lines 🎣
I can’t get the Salty Captain code to work mate. Want to support you 👍🏻 It should work on the rescue pack as it’s not on sale
Hey mate, thanks for trying to use the code and supporting me, I really appreciate it!! I just went to the website and tried to type the code in, and it seems like it isn’t working at the moment for some reason. I’ll get onto Salty Captain tomorrow and get it fixed ASAP! I’ll reply to your comment here when it’s working again. Thanks for the heads up mate, and thanks again for the support! 🙌👍
G’day mate, I contacted Salty Captain today and they said they have just disabled any discount codes while the Black Box sale is happening. You’ll be able to use my code again after the sale finishes though (on the 25th of November I believe) to get a discount on the rescue pack!! Give it a try in a week or two and it should work hopefully. Thanks again for supporting me mate and I hope you put the products to good use 😁🎣 tight lines
As a former commercial fisherman who now runs charters on the east coast from JB to cairns stop parking on the biggest shows of life U can find. Yes U will catch the odd good fish from there. Life attracts life in the ocean but quite often those huge shows arnt the bait U think they are. They are crap like bellows fish. Look for a few bigger marks and they will Al ost never be right on the big pinniclea of reef. They will be on the up current side. The pressure point as we call it
Works for snapper and kings and Jew down south to trout, reds and nannies up north
Oh and look for smaller more isolated bits of reef. The bigger systems do hold fish but they are alot more spread around and they get hammered because everyone knows those reefs. Use Navionics at home. It's your best tool for finding fish regularly
Thanks for the insight Shane, I agree that this is all true in some circumstances, however it’s not always so black and white when you’re out on the water. We’ve definitely caught big fish off smaller shows before on isolated lumps (as I showed at the end of this video) however we’ve also had some of our best ever sessions fishing around larger shows of bait that’s being balled up by predators. I do agree though - sometimes the larger shows of fish on the sounder can just be things like surgeonfish or leather jackets, etc. however those usually show up differently and less ‘balled up’ from what I’ve seen. As you said, it can be a waste of time dropping baits around these as you usually don’t even get a bite. I think fishing the front edge/pressure point of structure is awesome, especially for snapper and northern species as you said, however once again we’ve found some of our best fish by sounding around over fairly flat areas and just finding where the bait and fish are. Sometimes you do have to chase them around a bit as they move around though. I definitely think that finding the smaller patches of reef or bommies out away from the main systems is best though as they get less pressured. Where you find fish and how they feed can vary depending on the day and learning to read what’s happening on your sounder is usually the biggest difference between catching them or not! Cheers and tight lines, good luck with the charters 🎣
Bloody hell mate, what a flex!!! Nonchalant 3hr snooze up in the cabin and comes out bleary eyed and dusts an absolute better!! What a cracking catch and an epic family moment 😂😂
Hahaha yep, Matt definitely knows when to jump into action hey!! I couldn’t believe he caught that on my rod, the only time I left it unattended all day! 😂🤣 It was such great fish, we are absolutely stoked and it’s a memory we will never forget! To have it on film is even better. Thanks heaps mate, we really appreciate the comment. Next time I’ll be handing the smaller fish off to Matt 😉😂👍
Excellent video Will 👌
Thanks heaps mate! I’m glad you enjoyed 😁👍
We love global warming in SE Qld, expect these to be more regular in our future.
I agree mate, I definitely get the feeling that the average water temper must be increasing slightly down here in SEQ. Barramundi and Threadfin Salmon in the estuaries, more numbers of coral trout, and the mackerel stuck around almost all year round last season… will be interesting to see if the trend continues in future years! Cheers mate, tight lines
