Avi left PTX on good terms. The touring schedule was so hectic, and his mom was ill. Avi was trying to shuffle back and forth, and it wore him down. He didn't want his personal battles to interfere with the group in any way. Avi was already doing solo work, but leaving the group allowed him to focus on his own music. I found Avi's music at the time in my life that I needed it. His lyrics, music, and heart stopping voice fast became my favorite. Avi's music penetrates into my heart and soul, and I hope you check out some of his solo work.
It really is better to watch Avi's explanation for leaving in his own words (I'll put a link to the video in a response under this comment), but basically, the intense touring schedule without the ability to see friends and family when he needed to, or when they needed him, caused him to take a step back. He is also someone who needs to step into nature to help clear his mind and bring him peace. He now does solo music (often in the folk/Americana style), and he is able to schedule his touring so that it is less overwhelming. This is my favorite Peter Hollens collaboration (which is saying a lot because he has many wonderful collabs). Their voices just blend together so beautifully. I agree with other suggestions to react to Avi solo (though I am partial to the 7 Layers Session version of Avi's "All is Well". God bless you.

You beat me to recommending "All Is Well, 7 Layers Sessions". The natural acoustics and reverb in that church in Utrecht, Netherlands created the perfect setting for such an amazing and beautiful song.
Enjoyed your reaction. 3 Things - There is a TH-cam video of Avi explaining why he left Pentatonix, You need to listen to Change on the Rise by Avi, and you need to listen to TH-cam video of Avi singing overtones. One very talented person. He may not sing as low as others, but his smooth, rich and velvety tone is beyond anyone else.

Agree 100% that Avi is super talented and humble. I saw him in concert and he is genuine and charismatic. No pretention, his voice is buttery and he is an amazing story teller. His song Change on the Rise is a call to change. He was going through a lot of inner conflict and wrote it promptly after leaving PTX. It has been featured on several television shows. Another super listen is his song entitled When Im a Fool performed at Sunset Sound. I hope you will check him out. He also as a new LP coming out very soon. Thanks Kay Wolf for bringing this song to you. Peter Hollens makes beautiful music, and Avi Kaplan is amazing. Avi's duet with Joy Williams (All Is Well) is another song you may enjoy. Avi left PTX to pursue his own style - mostly folksy layed back music and great lyrics.

I would highly recommend reacting to Avi's first solo release "Change on the Rise." I think that both of you would love it.
Avi was still with PTX when he did this fab collaboration with Peter. Other people have mentioned why he left the band but more recently Avi has said that he only used about 10% of his voice when he was with PTX (he studied opera and was going to join the LA Opera Co.when he got the call from PTX). He is also an awesome songwriter but not in the PTX style. He has done some fabulous work since going solo. Please consider reacting to him.

I could type out why Avi Left PTX, but he made a video that is well worth a watch. I'd rather see you two react to the video. But I will say he left on the best of terms. No falling out. Actually, Avi found Matt for his replacement.
