This song gives me goose bumps every time I hear it. If you listen to Avi’s “He don’t love you right”, I’m confident that you’ll get goose bumps galore (no video, though).
Peter Hollens began his TH-cam channel doing composited harmonies. He sang all the parts, with a square window sowing video of him singing the corresponding part. He, in my opinion, is a master at creating these very complex multi part harmonies.
I am again reminded how much we owe to "Sing Off", and the judges thereon, for the exposure of these artists to a wide audience. Peter was among contestants in 2010, and received encouragement from that year's judges.
As an aside, this video from mid-2011 (just before he was recruited into PTX for The Sing Off) will give you a glimpse of Avi in his college (Mount San Antonio College in California) award-winning chamber choir performing Bruckner's "Christus Factus Est". As you may know, Avi co-founded the A Cappella Academy in 2014, along with Ben Bram (longtime PTX producer/arranger) and Rob Dietz (composer/arranger) - an annual 10-day intensive vocal music camp for kids 12 to 18 from around the world, where they learn to hone their vocal skills, performance, theory, and specialties like beatboxing and bass singing (which Avi often teaches himself - as seen in this YT Short where his bass class, all under 18 - do "Hoist the Colors" th-cam.com/users/shortsbRcq_8DEZyc ). This other video, from 2016, was done at the talent show, where the students were able to show off their personal skills. This was absolutely amazing when I first heard it never having ever heard Avi in anything other than the bass supporting role to the other singers in PTX. Loved his tone and how he and Peter's voices fit well together. Peter developed the multi-part visual style with Fifgen. Peter also mentioned that the only way he was able to fly from Oregon to Los Angeles and record with Avi in their studio was through his patreon support. Peter can be pretty amazing in his own right. He was on the SingOff the year before Pentatonix with a collegiate acapella group he put together On the Rocks at The University of Oregon. He is pretty hyperactive in his field. Among numerous collaborations a favorite of mine is with Lindsey Stirling in a Star Wars medley where his wife at one point plays a wookie 🙂

Thanks for your analysis. This is a beautiful arrangement of this traditional folk ballad. Peter & Avi's voices really complement each other with the high & low tones. I enjoy his collaborations with other artists especially basses. Peter & Tim Foust have also done quite a few great songs together. In fact they recently released a duet album.

WONDERFUL reaction! Thank you VERY much! These are two of my VERY favorite singers in the world. My favorite (since last April) is Dan Vasc. Peter used to be in that spot, but he's a VERY close second, at this point. Before I knew about Peter, Avi was my all-time favorite. So...really...the three of them kind of just move around in my head a LOT. Having Peter and Avi together on one screen is super fantastic! Peter has actually appeared in a short cameo on one of Dan's videos, as well (I'll Make A Man Out of You). I'm SO happy to hear you talking about the overtones. I haven't searched to see if you've ever reacted to Avi doing examples of the overtone singing he can do. As for Peter, well...there's not much he CAN'T do, through the magic of not only his own VOICE, but through his wonderfully-layered arrangements. As for Dan, I've tried to explain to people who wonder about a great-grandma in her 70s, who loves to listen to "metal" music. The thing is, when I was younger, I really did NOT listen to a lot of it, because some of the early stuff, simply tore my head apart, and the harmonics some of those "singers" produced made me want to THROW BREAKABLE THINGS at them. With Dan, when he sings, and the GORGEOUS harmonics start to open up in my head, all I want to do is melt into them, and stay there forever. (If/when you react to Dan's version of "Music of the Night," there's a certain place where I believe you'll understand what I mean.) Peter produces much the same thing, though not always in a single layer (which is perfectly fine...he HEARS the sounds, then produces them through layering). Listening to THIS song, puts my whole body into overdrive, and I could listen to it forever. Oh, and for all three of them, one thing I'm always telling people is, "WATCH THE EYES!" All three of them use their faces in ultra-expressive ways, which is very, very effective, because they all FEEL the music they are making, and the essence travels outward, through their expressions, and through their eyes. They all, also, use frequent body movements -- each of them in their own ways -- that also help the emotive content feel so alive. Again...thank you very, very much for this reaction, and I'm so excited for you to have the chance to get to know Peter! I've been one of his patrons since 2015 (with a short gap when I had to cut out all of my Patreons for a bit, to get through a bad financial time).
Thanks for another great breakdown/reaction. I've always loved this arrangement, haunting and beautiful. If you're interested, I would highly recommend Peter Hollens' cover of I See Fire. It's quite amazing; a wonderful arrangement and lots of vocal layering. PS: Peter did an interview with The Charismatic Voice and I believe he mentions something like 100 vocal and body perc layers in that one.
I'm so glad you reacted to this. They are both wonderful singers and arrangers, and it must have been such a pleasure for them to do this together. This was done about 6 months before Avi announced that he was leaving PTX. It helped a lot, once we heard about it, to know that he would still be creating such beautiful music aside from PTX. A few other Avi favorites are Quarter Past Four (his original), Hey Ya! (Outkast Cover, done with a group included multiple times on his first album, The Sequoias), and Sweet Adeline Part 2 (original). Love to see your reaction to any of those.

As you have said, this is a very complicated arrangement, but I am not even close to your level of understanding. However, the words/music moved me……. As I SEE, MOVED you. As a musician, you can surely appreciate the intricacies of ALL you have explained, but I LOVE HOW, and WHAT this POETRY DID for you ( and by extension, ME). As a Master once said, I may sing however many ranges, but I want to bring MAGIC to your life. Fantasy, and otherworldly BEAUTY is not a bad thing, in this often crazy and chaotic world! I loved watching you get so obviously emotional while listening to this song. It's so hauntingly beautiful. I clearly remember being stunned the first time I heard it and I still get goosebumps when I hear it even now. Thanks for helping me appreciate it even more. 🥰 BTW, I remember Peter sometimes has a habit of noting how many layered tracks it took to create a song in the description of the video, even in the video itself at times. It goes up to the hundreds sometimes. It's been a while since I checked out his work but I seem to remember one where there was well over 200 tracks. I also recall him doing a song with Lindsey Stirling, whom you've seen perform with Pentatonix before. I can't remember the name of the song (I'm terrible at remembering the name of anything honestly, lol) though I remember it had a sort of video game (RPG/MMO style) theme to the video which was cool. I'm sure someone will point you to it eventually if you do more Peter Hollens reactions. 😅👍
I listened to you. I really did. Until you started the music again, and then I couldn't hear you anymore. I listened again, and I did follow most of your analysis, but for the first time. it didn't matter. All that mattered was the ineffable beauty that Peter and Avi created, and the emotion that you and I (and 476+ other people) felt as we listened. None of my business--but what kind of pain did Avi go through that made him take this off his own channel? Thank God that Peter still makes it available.
Peter Hollens is a master arranger and solo a cappella singer. My personal favorite of his many covers is his solo rendition of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.” Peter’s duets introduced me to Tim Foust. Their covers of “Greensleeves” “Bridge over Troubled Water” are great. Thank you for this reaction.

I had commented that I had found much of Avi’s original material sounding quite a bit the same to me so you left me this link. Indeed, this is WAY different from what I’ve heard so far from Avi. Then again this is a duet but still virtually everything about this song is different. I love the arrangement and Peter Hollens’s upper register in harmony with itself is almost eerie, yet really beautiful. As you said it is very complex but these two made it work superbly. I forgot that I wanted to talk about FifGen. They also did quite a few Home Free videos before leaving the video production business to become full-time musicians. Reilly and his wife MacKenzie Zamber now produce originals and covers under the name The Hound and the Fox. They have a very 60s folk sound. I would recommend their collabs with Adam Chance from Home Free on Wayfaring Stranger (on his channel) and Sound of Silence (on their channel). Just one more enjoyable rabbit hole.

He does a second version with Anna Gilbert. I love them both. Another all-time favorite is his cover of "I See Fire" from the Hobbit. It's haunting. All of his Hobbit/LOTR songs are amazing, and he does a spectacular arrangement of Misty Mountains with Tim Foust. Then there's his Amazing Grace with Home Free. Another favorite is Loch Lomond: both versions, one with David Archuleta. There are so many Peter and Tim collab's, in all kinds of genres, and they're all great: Bridge over Troubled Water; You've Got a Friend; Greensleeves. Actually, you can't go wrong with any song Peter does, but I think start with I See Fire.

Homeward Bound, which he did with a choir of 300+ kids. His medleys are a lot of fun (and also great arrangements). Two more favorite collabs with Tim Foust: Fire and Rain and Blackbird. When you get to Christmas, there are a whole list of songs to add. However, his original December Song (written with Anna Gilbert) is wonderful.
Just as an aside; I listened to this with my Status ANC 3 Earbuds and I have to say they are amazing. I have Super EQ headphones that don't produce bass as magnificently as the Status Earbuds.
Great song, full body chills the whole time, really awesome! This might not be a popular opinion but I think Avi really shines in an ensemble vs his solo work because his voice is just so delicious in chords and with other singers. That probably doesn't make any sense, some voices just pull song a together like peanut butter while some other voices are like the jelly. It's like he's made to be the gooey center of a song. I hope they team up more! Great reaction! But you gotta check out Geoff's solo stuff, I'm positive now you'll love it. Try his Blackbird cover or Ghost Riders in the Sky, that one has some super yummy filthy chords, but they all do. Or Wicked Game might be an interesting comparison to Diana Ankudinova's version.
This song is a favorite of mine. I love the melancholy, reminiscing feeling the song has, and like discovering new versions of it. I used to listen to a choir version of the song every night before sleeping! I remember one night putting this cover on instead, not knowing what to expect and I ended up wide awake instead of sleeping, because I was so intently listening to all the vocal layers of it! I think it blends a lot of elements nicely from multiple known versions of the melody and with that blend creates its own original version of the song. I wonder, you mentioned listening to some versions before reacting to Peter and Avi's, what were the versions you listened to before reacting to this? 👀👀

I hope that you came across the version by 'Desmond Earley & The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin' in Spotify's top-search of the song. If not then I'd definitely recommend you hear that one! It's the one I used to listen to before sleeping, an all time favorite! It's perfect for a rainy evening or right before some shut-eye. The choral arrangement, much like this version, transports you in the songs' story, I feel like.
I appreciate your points on dissonance because I find that there are certain songs that a particular section can either grate on my nerves or bring tears to my eyes. Do you believe that there are certain notes, or combination of notes that can bring forth unexplained emotions?
I don't know how much tracks he layered in this one but in the 'Skyrim Theme with Lindsey ' He put 120. He did the Same without Lindsey and it was still near 100... Some of the Songs hast around 50... As far as i know...

This was absolutely amazing when I first heard it never having ever heard Avi in anything other than the bass supporting role to the other singers in PTX. Loved his tone and how he and Peter's voices fit well together.
Peter developed the multi-part visual style with Fifgen.
Peter also mentioned that the only way he was able to fly from Oregon to Los Angeles and record with Avi in their studio was through his patreon support.
Peter can be pretty amazing in his own right. He was on the SingOff the year before Pentatonix with a collegiate acapella group he put together On the Rocks at The University of Oregon.
He is pretty hyperactive in his field. Among numerous collaborations a favorite of mine is with Lindsey Stirling in a Star Wars medley where his wife at one point plays a wookie 🙂

Thank you for yet another amazing analysis! This arrangement is astonishing! I scarce have the words to describe how this song makes me feel, both musically and emotionally. Musically, the chords give me crazy powerful asmr. Emotionally, I have to say, as a women, to hear a man sing so reverently and tenderly about his lady love absolutely melts me. Thanks for your analysis. This is a beautiful arrangement of this traditional folk ballad. Peter & Avi's voices really complement each other with the high & low tones. I enjoy his collaborations with other artists especially basses. Peter & Tim Foust have also done quite a few great songs together. In fact they recently released a duet album.

These are two of my VERY favorite singers in the world. My favorite (since last April) is Dan Vasc. Peter used to be in that spot, but he's a VERY close second, at this point. Before I knew about Peter, Avi was my all-time favorite. So...really...the three of them kind of just move around in my head a LOT. Having Peter and Avi together on one screen is super fantastic! Peter has actually appeared in a short cameo on one of Dan's videos, as well (I'll Make A Man Out of You).
I'm SO happy to hear you talking about the overtones. I haven't searched to see if you've ever reacted to Avi doing examples of the overtone singing he can do. As for Peter, well...there's not much he CAN'T do, through the magic of not only his own VOICE, but through his wonderfully-layered arrangements.
As for Dan, I've tried to explain to people who wonder about a great-grandma in her 70s, who loves to listen to "metal" music. The thing is, when I was younger, I really did NOT listen to a lot of it, because some of the early stuff, simply tore my head apart, and the harmonics some of those "singers" produced made me want to THROW BREAKABLE THINGS at them. With Dan, when he sings, and the GORGEOUS harmonics start to open up in my head, all I want to do is melt into them, and stay there forever. (If/when you react to Dan's version of "Music of the Night," there's a certain place where I believe you'll understand what I mean.) Peter produces much the same thing, though not always in a single layer (which is perfectly fine...he HEARS the sounds, then produces them through layering).
Listening to THIS song, puts my whole body into overdrive, and I could listen to it forever.
Oh, and for all three of them, one thing I'm always telling people is, "WATCH THE EYES!" All three of them use their faces in ultra-expressive ways, which is very, very effective, because they all FEEL the music they are making, and the essence travels outward, through their expressions, and through their eyes. They all, also, use frequent body movements -- each of them in their own ways -- that also help the emotive content feel so alive.
Again...thank you very, very much for this reaction, and I'm so excited for you to have the chance to get to know Peter! I've been one of his patrons since 2015 (with a short gap when I had to cut out all of my Patreons for a bit, to get through a bad financial time).

PS: Peter did an interview with The Charismatic Voice and I believe he mentions something like 100 vocal and body perc layers in that one.
I'm so glad you reacted to this. They are both wonderful singers and arrangers, and it must have been such a pleasure for them to do this together. This was done about 6 months before Avi announced that he was leaving PTX. It helped a lot, once we heard about it, to know that he would still be creating such beautiful music aside from PTX. A few other Avi favorites are Quarter Past Four (his original), Hey Ya! (Outkast Cover, done with a group included multiple times on his first album, The Sequoias), and Sweet Adeline Part 2 (original). Love to see your reaction to any of those.

As you have said, this is a very complicated arrangement, but I am not even close to your level of understanding. However, the words/music moved me……. As I SEE, MOVED you. As a musician, you can surely appreciate the intricacies of ALL you have explained, but I LOVE HOW, and WHAT this POETRY DID for you ( and by extension, ME). As a Master once said, I may sing however many ranges, but I want to bring MAGIC to your life. Fantasy, and otherworldly BEAUTY is not a bad thing, in this often crazy and chaotic world! BTW, I remember Peter sometimes has a habit of noting how many layered tracks it took to create a song in the description of the video, even in the video itself at times. It goes up to the hundreds sometimes. It's been a while since I checked out his work but I seem to remember one where there was well over 200 tracks. I also recall him doing a song with Lindsey Stirling, whom you've seen perform with Pentatonix before. I can't remember the name of the song (I'm terrible at remembering the name of anything honestly, lol) though I remember it had a sort of video game (RPG/MMO style) theme to the video which was cool. I'm sure someone will point you to it eventually if you do more Peter Hollens reactions. 😅👍

I listened to you. I really did. Until you started the music again, and then I couldn't hear you anymore. I listened again, and I did follow most of your analysis, but for the first time. it didn't matter. All that mattered was the ineffable beauty that Peter and Avi created, and the emotion that you and I (and 476+ other people) felt as we listened. None of my business--but what kind of pain did Avi go through that made him take this off his own channel? Thank God that Peter still makes it available.
Peter Hollens is a master arranger and solo a cappella singer. My personal favorite of his many covers is his solo rendition of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.” Peter’s duets introduced me to Tim Foust. Their covers of “Greensleeves” “Bridge over Troubled Water” are great. Thank you for this reaction.

Watched this reaction from a link you left me in a comment I made from another of your reactions. I had commented that I had found much of Avi’s original material sounding quite a bit the same to me so you left me this link. Indeed, this is WAY different from what I’ve heard so far from Avi. Then again this is a duet but still virtually everything about this song is different. I love the arrangement and Peter Hollens’s upper register in harmony with itself is almost eerie, yet really beautiful. As you said it is very complex but these two made it work superbly. I forgot that I wanted to talk about FifGen. They also did quite a few Home Free videos before leaving the video production business to become full-time musicians. Reilly and his wife MacKenzie Zamber now produce originals and covers under the name The Hound and the Fox. They have a very 60s folk sound. I would recommend their collabs with Adam Chance from Home Free on Wayfaring Stranger (on his channel) and Sound of Silence (on their channel). Just one more enjoyable rabbit hole.

He does a second version with Anna Gilbert. I love them both. Another all-time favorite is his cover of "I See Fire" from the Hobbit. It's haunting. All of his Hobbit/LOTR songs are amazing, and he does a spectacular arrangement of Misty Mountains with Tim Foust. Then there's his Amazing Grace with Home Free. Another favorite is Loch Lomond: both versions, one with David Archuleta. There are so many Peter and Tim collab's, in all kinds of genres, and they're all great: Bridge over Troubled Water; You've Got a Friend; Greensleeves. Actually, you can't go wrong with any song Peter does, but I think start with I See Fire.

Homeward Bound, which he did with a choir of 300+ kids. His medleys are a lot of fun (and also great arrangements). Two more favorite collabs with Tim Foust: Fire and Rain and Blackbird. When you get to Christmas, there are a whole list of songs to add. However, his original December Song (written with Anna Gilbert) is wonderful.

Just as an aside; I listened to this with my Status ANC 3 Earbuds and I have to say they are amazing. I have Super EQ headphones that don't produce bass as magnificently as the Status Earbuds.

Great song, full body chills the whole time, really awesome! This might not be a popular opinion but I think Avi really shines in an ensemble vs his solo work because his voice is just so delicious in chords and with other singers. That probably doesn't make any sense, some voices just pull song a together like peanut butter while some other voices are like the jelly. It's like he's made to be the gooey center of a song. I hope they team up more! Great reaction!
But you gotta check out Geoff's solo stuff, I'm positive now you'll love it. Try his Blackbird cover or Ghost Riders in the Sky, that one has some super yummy filthy chords, but they all do. Or Wicked Game might be an interesting comparison to Diana Ankudinova's version.
This song is a favorite of mine. I love the melancholy, reminiscing feeling the song has, and like discovering new versions of it.
I used to listen to a choir version of the song every night before sleeping! I remember one night putting this cover on instead, not knowing what to expect and I ended up wide awake instead of sleeping, because I was so intently listening to all the vocal layers of it!
I think it blends a lot of elements nicely from multiple known versions of the melody and with that blend creates its own original version of the song.

If not then I'd definitely recommend you hear that one! It's the one I used to listen to before sleeping, an all time favorite! It's perfect for a rainy evening or right before some shut-eye. The choral arrangement, much like this version, transports you in the songs' story, I feel like.
