This is the best review I've seen. I'm on my 2nd Kelty Redwing 44. One is for travel, the other is my beach backpack. This bag is so versatile but I think it's the best airline carry-on you could get. I have used it the past 5 years for air travel with no issues. I've used it for a light weight weekend trip on a packed flight and it fit under the seat. Note that full pack won't fit under the seat but will in the overhead. Another note, I removed both the aluminum frame stay and waist belt. I don't find them necessary but this is pure personal preference. I've beat the hell out of them both but they keep going. Great review & great bag.
Johnny Mayfield thanks Johnny I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve taken this bag all over and it’s in perfect shaped. I’ve completely overloaded it and it always seems to fit everything. I’ve never had a problem fitting it into a six bin or overhead compartment. I even had to check it on this trip due to Australias carry on weight restrictions (and I wasn’t checking my camera bag with 10k worth of equipment) and it’s still in perfect shape. I however love the backplate and due tend to use the waste straps if I’m fully loaded and have a longer walk ahead really helps keep the weight off my back. Again thanks for the comment.
Well, I’ve had a Kelly redwing that’s 38 years old and has been around the world. I keep thinking I’ll get a new one but why? The zippers are perfect. Stitching still rock solid. Shoulder straps are in great condition. I’m taking her with me for a 12 day trip to the Swiss Alps. She’s the best travel companion I could have. Mountains, beaches, cities. Woods or even car camping. The Redwing is the best pack I’ve ever had. It will not leave my side any time soon. Get one and use it well.
@@christopherbianculli2792 Neither man...Honestly I was going to go for the Porter but stopped short when I read the wide criticism every where about the lack of support and strain it creates on the back. I was really favoring it for the great organization, especially the laptop compartment towards the back. I'm a big fan of compartments and pockets, which the Kelty lacked as you pointed out. Would have bought it due to the lower price but everything went up today $30 due to the end of the Thanksgiving weekend sale.
@@errffadurff I can't tell you how much I LOVE!!! the Kelty though. It is a dream to use and it is seriously so comfortable to carry. As @ready, set, woah said "I feel a love for this bag". and yea even though the pockets lack a little you can make up for that in other ways, plus as I also said I can pack more into the Kelty than the Osprey.
@@christopherbianculli2792 Speaking of packing as much, had any troubles carrying it on? Airlines, especially U.S ones are getting super stingy with carry-on size restrictions.
errffAdurrff never, it fits the size restrictions. I have been weighed though. I’ve had this bag all over the world (all over Europe, including Iceland, all throughout Southeast Asia, New Zealand, even Australia and they are even more stingy than the US.)
I’ve used the Kelty Redwing 44 for my two latest backpacking trips in Africa and I love it. I really feel love for this bag, haha. And the fact I can bring it on the airplane - excellent.
Still the Kelty's rigid frame just really forms to your back and is a much more comfortable carry. The Osprey is still as I said a wonderful bag and a great option.
Yea I like the Porter 46 for the storage and the organization but the Kelty seems good too. I'm going to order it and try it out. The more comfortable the better on long trips through the airport. Thanks man -Chris
Definitely, and I was able to fit more in the Kelty as crazy as that is. Great let me know what you think of it. If you haven't ordered it would be great if you could purchase through my link on my site. memycamerai.com/2018/06/10/luggage-packing-being-an-efficient-traveler/ just click on the kelty pic under luggage. And I will be doing a review on the Osprey Porter 30 / Boundary Supply Prima System / Peak Design bag as personal items next week.
Thank you. Yea I’ve never really camped and solely use the bag for carry on travel. But thank you for adding to the “GREATNESS of the Kelty! I’m sure it has great features as a camp/pack bag.
Thanks for the vid Chris. Appreciate how you respond to everyone. I don't believe you mentioned how much they retail or perhaps cost when they are on sale? I'm here because the Kelty 44 is on sale at Amazon for $60 and wanted to know what's up. Thanks.
Joe Joe TV Yo sorry for the late reply been pretty sick. The Kelty Redwing 44 is an amazing pack, my absolute favorite bag and I highly recommend getting it for traveling.
AU81Tiger no sorry I got side tracked with some other stuff and I’m currently traveling at the moment. I will be back state side in about a month and I will make that video.
I add my stuffs of about 10kg to this osprey porter 46 and I feel sick about my shoulder. It doesnt comfortable at all. Walking 20 minute with this bag really feels tired. I'm 180cm tall How many kg is the maximum recommendation of this bag?
Sri Har not sure exactly the max weight. I needed up only keeping the Kelty as it was much more comfortable on my back and I usually have about 20-26lbs (9-12kgs). The kelty has a hard/rigid backplate, which felt better while carrying. I packed the bag the same with the Osprey so it can handle the weight but again I just didn’t like the feel.
Dish didn’t actually keep the the osprey I went with the Kelty instead. But I packed it out and it’s smaller then a roller style bag. And I’ve never had a problem with the Kelty and I’ve had that baby packed beyond it’s max. Now weight can be a different issue,
Shane Perera I’m currently traveling and don’t have a tape measure, but the dimensions are: width of 15 inches a depth of 12 inches and a volume of 27 inches cubed or 44 liters. Hope that helps. If not I will be back state side April 30th and can help you out more then.
@@christopherbianculli2792 thank you for the reply, I saw the measurements but my doubt was about carrying it like hand lagage travelling, i hope I could pass it without paying extra for embark..
Shane Perera no it’s to big for hand luggage but its “carry on” size. I can actually fit more in the kelty than my Briggs and Riley roller “carry on” piece. If you’re looking for a “personal item” to add to “carry on” look at the Osprey Porter 30 you can shoulder carry and it will pass for hand luggage and fit under your seat. I will be posting a video when I get back. But as far as a “carry on” piece of luggage the Kelty Redwing 44 is king. Best backpack I own!
To be honest I don't have any experience with tents, the loops are just, I mean big big enough to squeeze my fist through. The very bottom of the bag has about 13 small daisy chain loops, so might be possible to strap it on the bottom of the bag.
It will take a 2 man tent and a compressed sleeping bag there is a space behind the side pocket s to store the tent poles which will then site in the mesh pocket 👀
@@christopherbianculli2792 thank u but the belt can be removed. U have to lift the aluminum pole up 5 inches and unhatch the thingy. They have the steps to download on site . I use my bag for school not hiking, so the belt is not necessary and it's real aggressive . So I don't need it.
@@christopherbianculli2792 yeah you can remove it completely with those steps , or u have the option to HIDE the belt by tucking it into the little belt pocket thingy lol. I have chosen to just hide it. U can't see it no more , and I don't like the hassle of completely removing the belt . I like it hidden
Walt Williams so you already have the bag? I was going to say for school I might actually go with the osprey porter 30 it’s a little smaller and has more and better organizational pockets. The belt straps can be hidden and you can also hide the shoulder straps. Their is also the option to buy a shoulder strap to shoulder carry.

Nice video. The osprey porter 46 has load lifers. You have to clip the straps into the top part up by the sunglasses pouch. Makes a ton of difference

I just bought the Redwing 44 Tactical in Coyote and it's super comfortable!
Brad Beckett Awesome! Yes I absolutely love this bag. Love it more every time I use it. Let me know how it travels with you.
what is the benefit of the 44 Tactical vs standard Kelty Redwing 44? Is it built tougher?
@@robwenman8179 yes significantly better fabric and better stitching. I felt I could tear the non-tactical fabric version quite easily.
Great review mate! Defo will be getting the Kelty! I don't like bulky backpacks so the Kelty looks the perfect fit for me.

Does your padlock go through the small holes of the zipper or through the rope? If it's through the rope it's pointless as someone can untie the rope
No I got some braided hanging wire and a clamp and made my own security loops that I can lock.
