...I used this pack on my AT thru-hike all the way. It has far more room than you think, it weighs barely more than 2 pounds after all the "extraneous" crap is trimmed away...ha...and as long as you plan to go ultralite and use equipment like Zpacks' solplex tent, zpacks' sleeping bag, MH's ghost whisperer down jacket, etc., etc., this pack will be more than enuff to thru-hike the AT. This is one COMFORtable pack IF, IF, IF it fits you properly!!! If you have a really long torso then this pack may not be for you unless you like 90% of the weight of the pack riding on the shoulders. The problem with most so-called ultralite packs is that they sacrafice a LOT to get it that way. Compare the weight of this pack to many "ultralite" packs then toss in the GREAT hipbelt you find on this pack...the pockets, zippered accesses...and so on and you'll find that you cant go wrong with this pack, even on a thru-hike....as long as you know what you're doing......
I bought the 2013 verison of this pack since it's a bit shorter and can fit into just about all carryon requirements. And it's the perfect size for lightweight weekend hikes, and for a day pack you can still sinch it down and make it a decent size. Super happy with it, but im also curious what exactly you cut off to trim it down!
I had a Kelty Redwing 3100cm circa 2004 which has been everywhere, done everything. Trekking in Bhutan and Peru. Travel Thailand 7x, Cambodia 2x, Laos, Vietnam, Patagonia, New Zealand, Belize, Bali, everywhere. It finally showed its age in Peru this summer. Everyone on my Cordillera Huayhuash trek had Osprey except for two Redwings. Time to replace. I bought an Osprey, but after taking it home and realizing in the real world, I'm using it 60% urban and travel, 40% day hiking and trekking, I was missing the "Swiss Army Knife" Redwing. I need the pockets for pens, phone, travel journal/tablet, passport, plane tix etc. So I returned the Osprey and got another Redwing. If I do another Himalayan or Andean trek, maybe I'll spring for an Osprey.
Really good multi purpose pack, it's a shame that the 2016 model is 3inches/8cm longer than what most airlines allow as carry on. I'm eyeing last year's model as it is shorter but with the same volume.
Thanks for the review it was great! I can't decide whether I want the 44 or the 50 can I ask you does the 50 have considerably more room than the 44? or is the difference minimal?
Hi, thanks for watching! Kelty does make a women's specific Redwing 40: www.enwild.com/kelty-women-s-redwing-40-2016.html. Size and organization will be almost the same as the 44 (minus 4L, of course), and the main differences will be the length of the torso and shape of the hipbelt and harness.
Hi Gaby! The Redwing 50 is 26" tall, so it is a little to large to use as a carry on bag. There may be some wiggle room if it isn't full, but it is worth checking with your airline. Thanks for watching!
Yes, the hip belt can be removed. This picture explains the steps involved images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91EBos9nm3L.pdf. Thanks for watching!
Hi Ken! You might want to try looking for packing cubes: www.enwild.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=packing+cubes If that's not exactly what you're looking for, the organizer bag is likely just a standard zippered storage sack
Just a question related to english language. Lots of the video about this backpack claim that you can open it like a piece of luggage. What I dont understand is that a backpack is luggage or does people use the world luggage to describe a suitcase?
I'm American. When I hear "luggage," I think of a suitcase. Yes, a backpack is luggage, but it would be more accurate if reviewers say you can open it like a suitcase.
I tried to remove hip belt but it was way harder than it looks on the video... First thing was the strip bands that come crimped and dont allow to be unleash (That was easy to fix with scissors). Then the aluminum bar that I believe goes through the hip belt. I has not being able to pull the aluminum bar up to release the hip belt... Hopefully you can give me some tips.... :)
I had the same problem with mine. I tried everything I could to get that folded end thru the adjustment buckle and it will not work without cutting it off. I think that's a poor design on Kelty's part to make a pack with a removable hip belt, yet you have to alter the design in order to do it. She makes it look easy to remove, however It's not and like you Juan, I'd like to know what she did to make it remove so easily.
The torso range is from 14.5" to 18.5". This pack might be a little short for you. the Redwing 50 has a longer torso range and would fit you much better with a range from 15.5" - 21". You can check it out here: www.backcountryedge.com/kelty-redwing-50-2016.html
It can be tough to say as many airlines have different restrictions on carry on items. Here's a handy guide so you can check on many major airlines rules, however, it is always beneficial to checking in with your particular flight to confirm! Thanks for watching! travel-made-simple.com/carry-on-size-chart/
The Redwing 44 is ideal for someone with a 14.5" - 18.5" torso. There is a women's specific version called the Redwing 40, which is better suited for folks with smaller frames.
you guys ever had your hands on the REI Co-op Ruckpack 40? looks like a good pack but they dont sell it where i am and not keen on buying it then not liking it. thanks
We don't carry REI, so we can't really say. Feel free to check out these packs, all between 40-50L: www.backcountryedge.com/backpacking-and-camping-gear/backpacks-bags/day-packs.html?storage_capacity=40-50
Exactly the details I hoped to find. Thanks, Becky.

Thanks for sharing your story!
What did you trim away for the 10oz to get down to 2 lbs? Would like to know for my own use

Great pack - but 44 liters is overkill for a day pack.
Thank you for this one.
Thank you for watching! Happy Trails!
Thanks for the review it was great!
I can't decide whether I want the 44 or the 50 can I ask you does the 50 have considerably more room than the 44? or is the difference minimal?
Hey Darrell, thanks for watching! The 50 has about 6 more liters of space
Is the women's version of this pack the redwing 32?... how does it compare size wise for stuffing items inside?
Hi, thanks for watching! Kelty does make a women's specific Redwing 40: www.enwild.com/kelty-women-s-redwing-40-2016.html. Size and organization will be almost the same as the 44 (minus 4L, of course), and the main differences will be the length of the torso and shape of the hipbelt and harness.
wow great video! I can't wait until mine arrives :)
Can you tell me how much it weighs
Can the aluminum back stay be removed?
Do you know if the 50L is also carry on if ints not full?

Can the hip belt be removed? If so how to do it. The one I have the hip belt does no slide out like that? I have the new one

@@Enwild okay thanks
@@waltwilliams1997 No problem!
Where do I find those organizer bags that are in the backpack? Anyone help me with that?
Hi Ken! You might want to try looking for packing cubes: www.enwild.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=packing+cubes

Very thorough! Thank you.
I have that pack and I cannot remove my hip belt...why?
The process can be a bit confusing, but just follow these steps images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91EBos9nm3L.pdf

Do you think someone with a 20 in. torso could wear this ok?

what about rain?
The pack is not waterproof, however, there are rain covers, which are sold separately! Thanks for watching.
44l isnt a day pack, its a travel round the world lightweight pack!
We dig your style Northern Gypsy! Keep it light!
Thanks. Other wise a very good review :)

Hey, what are you talking about. It's a huge backpack.
44 liters is close to the middle-lower capacity range for backpacking, but for a day pack the Redwing is definitely sizable. Thanks for watching!
she looks like a pokemon trainer, great video though
