Anyone who watched Darren McCarty knows that the wings would have had a very difficult time winning without him. He was a key contributor... without him, they wouldn't have won.
Just because it's called the "4th" line doesn't mean shit. It's a role line. Without those guys the top 6 can only do so much. 4th liners are typically responsible for going against the opposing top lines and essentially going for puck possession and heavy forechecking/defense. Smh these dudes man. Plus Dmac has come in clutch so many times pulling moves like a top 6er.
I remember watching the Wings win their cups, it is painfully obvious how important DMac and the rest of the role players were to the championships. The grind line started a lot of games to get the momentum going and they were always good for an energy boost and like DMac pointed they were able to steal some games for the Wings at big times.
The statement is false. The Grind Line has always been. And shall every be. Thee quintessential ingredient bestowed up any champion period. Scott Bowmen regards these men paramount. Good-looking players that can score, like me can always be added. But. There not the core. Core! ( Steve Yzerman and the Grind Line ). The Core! Darren is by far the glue that permits victory.
Ive always said each teams top 2 lines will most likely cancel each other out and its up to who has the better depth. There have been many notable cup winning 3rd lines in recent memory, like the LA kings 70s line and Pens HBK line.
I went to Gordie Howe's hockey school for two years just before he left Detroit for the WHL. Gordie had his sons on the staff, which shouldn't surprise anyone--but he also had Bryan "Bugsy" Watson. I was too young at the time to really appreciate having Watson there, but as I grew older and understood the game better, I realized that he was there for exactly the reasons that D-Mac is saying.
Bugsy was a great guy - I had the pleasure of going to his bar in Washington and meeting him . I got to tell him i grew up a red wings fan and remember his tilts in the early 70s - he just died a year or two ago - when i met him was mid 90s - and he was ready to go still at any time - as in nobody really got out of line in Bugsy's bar . That's why he's my favorite. He was ready to go to hell and back for his teammates, and stuck up for Drapes at the PERFECT moment. #25 is a legend, and the Grind Line is a huge reason for 4 Cups in Hockeytown in 11 years.
Love it. Was a fan of McCarty, Draper, Lapointe, Ward, and Osgood when they came through Glens Falls playing for Adirondack in the mid '90s. Too many of our players today do not want to do the grind line type work.

This is a horrible take by Sam. He should just keep his mouth shut. Darren is 💯 right. If it weren’t for the role players on all those teams, we probably don’t have 4 cups.
Here's the crazy part, Darren McCarty WAS a skilled player the first 5 or 6 years of his career. He's won a Cup as a skill player and a depth/role guy.
Sam needs to win a pro championship before he says anything about Darren McCarty and what's remembered about cups. I mean I know Sam is playing pro... oh wait! He isn't! Darren bagged the Game Winning goal in 1997. Darren should take a page from Patrick Roy (whom he scored a hat trick on in the 2002 Playoffs by the way) and say "I'm sorry I can't hear you. I have (FOUR) Stanley Cup Championship rings in my ears."
A great winning team needs contributions top to bottom,. In the 50's Detroit had Howe of course Lindsay Abel Kelly and other greats but they had utility players who came up big for them. Johnny Wilson Marty Pavelich Tony Leswick Glen Skov Metro Prystai and others. McCarty was one of those guys in the Yzerman era and he shined in the playoffs.
I know this segment was done in fun and to generate interest. But I think it is so disrespectful to DMac. He is a living legend! He was such an important part of the Wings dynasty. He will always be my favorite player from that era because he played with grit and heart...and skill!

Darren Mccarty was like having Probert that could score goals and be smartish on the ice. Mccarty and the grind line was essential to winning 4 cups. The disrespect is wild.
D-Mac is my all-time favorite hockey player. That being said, Probert was a much more talented offensive player than McCarty was. Probie was an all-star, had multiple 20 goal seasons, on a not-so-good Wings squad. McCarty never scored 20 in a season. His goals were timely, in big moments, but there weren't many of them. @@markgreen6578 Definitely. He's had some enormous goals in his career, and he could flash the offensive talent from time to time... I do think that he was capable of 20+ goals, but maybe the role didn't dictate it as much as Probert's role. Probie was playing with Yzerman a lot, so that helped his numbers for sure! I loved both as players, and was lucky enough to get to see both of them in their respective primes. Both guys are priceless when you're building a winning culture.
Darren, don't let this wannabe get under your skin...I only played Junior hockey but hockey has been my life and I would kill to have lived through your Championships ...there are no Cup moments without Yzerman, Fedorov or Lidstrom but there are none without the grind line either...your line was instrumental in setting the tone throughout the games...Yzerman is my favorite player (I grew up playing against him when he was in Nepean Ontario) but I'd bet the Grind line would be the first names out of his mouth in describing the most important players on those teams...look back on those moments and be proud of your accomplishments...I'd give my left nut to have lived through your experiences.
DMac might not be a hall of famer but the Red Wings should retire his number. He was the catalysis to get us over the hump by being the main player in the most important regular season game in the franchises history and he scored the winning goal to clinch 1st cup in 40+ years. What he did for this franchise will never be forgotten by anyone who lived through that era.
My take is: locally, as a fan of a championship team, you are going to remember all the players from those teams and special moments involving said players. Fans of the spot but not of the championship teams won't remember most of the role players. That doesn't take away anything from those guys, but I think that's just the reality of it. The grind line will always be legendary in this town.
Ask the Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Maple Leafs how a top heavy roster has worked out for them in the recent seasons. McDavid and Matthews are future HOF players
I agree with D-Mac. By Sam Flannel’s logic, the current Wings are a 2C and a D pair away from a Cup run. Those of us that grew up watching the ‘95 -‘97 teams know it’s more than that. The Grind Line was so far ahead of other teams third lines at the time it was insane. It was depth, not stars that won those Cups. Stevie know that too.
Beside the grind line how many players can claim 4 Stanley cups or HOFers have their name 4 times on the cup theirs not too many. Also it always been a Team Sport everyone does their part in winning the cup, and Darrin mc knows that it's always been a Team effort together!!
Redwings had great hall of gamers, but they won multiple cups because of having the best 4th line grind line in the nhl at the time. It was the probably the only 4th line in the league that casual fans of the nhl knew their names.
Dude, guys like Bob Probert and Darren McCarty,, Joe Kocur will forever be remembered in this State.. and I’d say are remembered more than many many many guys who scored goals
this is absolute sad takeaway from the joke in the booth. The GRIND LINE was the heart and soul of the team. All of the shorthanded goals, dagger 3rd period goals against the other team top lines, gut wrenching 3 man pkills they did to swing momentum back. you are so delusional! If you see how the red wings could ROLL FOUR LINES that could stand toe to toe and play well. They werent the best players but maltby, mccarty, and draper are some of the most BELOVED players in red wings lore. This team didnt win crap until they came together around defense and playing together as a team. I grew up in the 90's. A fourth line domination was demoralizing to the likes of the colorado and dallas in the playoffs. You could see the life being sucked out of the fans when our fourth line shut their top line down.
Does Detroit ever overcome Colorado without Darren McCarty? I'm not so sure. The Avalanche dominated Detroit prior to the Game. They bullied us. D-Mac single handedly ended that by beating the snot out of Claude Lemieux (who absolutely deserved it). He then finished the game with a GWG. Do, whose Stanley Cups were they? You'd better believe they were Darren McCarty's.
DMac you are spot on brother, the grind line made it possible for the stars Stevie Y.... Could do their job because you, Draper and Malts did the dirty nasty work, shutting down the other teams 1st and 2nd lines. Throwing Joey in from time to time to take care of the cheap shots. When anyone asks who my favorite Red Wing is I answer the Grind Line, D Mac, Draper and Maltsby were the glue that held everything together! The one line that went out night after night and did their job and a little bit more every shift! Just want to close this out with a thank you to all of the Red Wings past, present and future! Thank You!!!!!
Straight ignorance, D Mac was a huge part of the wings success, Without the grind line there'd be no cups. I've been a wings fan since birth, Steve Yzerman was the heart of the team, D Mac and Drapes were the arms and Lidstrom and Konstinov the body, federov and shanahan the legs, larionov the brain, DMac finished his career +61 that's on a checking line! Playing against the best 288 points! Don't dismiss D Mac's importance to the team and it's success. I wanna slap the dude questioning his importance to the team. Remember who scored the game winning goal, fight night? D Mac, remember who scored the game winning Stanley cup goal in 97 against the flyers? D Mac, real fans know
McCarty should go down in the NHL hall of fame, and also he deserves a UFC hall of fame gesture as well. The dude was an amazing goon who scored goals he stuck up for his team mates when they were cheap shot on. Loved watching him always knew it was gonna be a good game against the Avalanche

Should retire the entire Grind Line. #25, #33, and #18 will never be duplicated OR forgotten in Hockeytown! #LGRW
Hockey fans all over know the Grind Line, and they sure as hell know them in Denver! #LGRW
No bigger in the moment soul than Darren
Sam needs to shut his mouth and know his role before D MAC slaps the lips off his face 🤣
Yeah this is just weird. Disrespecting a four time cup winner is weird.
Dmac and the entire grind line belongs in the hof without question. a good case could be made for the black aces too.....
Sam is a bit confused.. Guy recovering for a head injury? F that guy D Mac!
We remember March 97!
You know what Darren don't have to explain shit ok he and the wings are the best team ever in hokey
Getting harder and harder to watch. Just a terrible take. Turned it off after Sam tried his best Skip Bayless impression.
The difference is they are stars and would be stars even if mccarty and all the roll players didn’t exist
Every player gets a ring.
DMac is 1000% correct on the whole thing. Flannel guy knows shit and probably can’t skate.
Who pounded Lemeuix to hamburger? Dmac did!
D Mac, real fans know
Yzerman should hire D MAC for coach
Dmac was professionally heated 😆 🤣 😂
McCarty should go down in the NHL hall of fame, and also he deserves a UFC hall of fame gesture as well. The dude was an amazing goon who scored goals he stuck up for his team mates when they were cheap shot on. Loved watching him always knew it was gonna be a good game against the Avalanche
It’s all about the team not just a few it’s the whole
My 2nd all time favorite Woodward clip, the initial confrontation was my favorite, lol.
Dude that '97 was great. Beating the Avs was so hard they could've of done it without DMac, Maltpy, Draber. It truly was a team thing.
You REALLY don't know hockey do you? You don't even know team sports period!
Neil's face was priceless and dmac was 100% right
Imo I think the 2002 team could beat any team today tbh
