Would you commute on the Sporty 883?

I used mine to commute to work for a while. It was my first motorcycle back in 2011. Cool bike, but I wasn't a big fan on the freeway at speeds above 65mph.

I have never ridden an 883 but I have a 1200 custom that I bobbed out with 18" apes. The wind hitting my chest is intense at 90 plus. The curves are sketchy as hell but I love that bike. I ride the hell out of it. I also have an 05 electraglide (unofficial Streetglide) and that's my highway bike. I treat them both equally. I ride one for awhile and then ride the other for awhile.
To answer your question; if it's all I had, hell yeah!

Love my 2005 XL883 Sporty standard with mid-controls. It's perfect for the mountain twisties and the country roads. It can handle the interstate alright but I hate the interstate on any bike, so it's a moot point for me. It's a SPORTster, after all. If I wanted a bigger bike, I would get an EVO 80 (1340cc) Softail, but I don't have the need. I'm happy with what I want. All of my mods are internal for reliability and longevity. You gave a good review here.

My buddy has an 883 Iron and it it cruises next to my Dyna at 80-90 mph no problem. I had an 883 standard that i used to tour on, pulling a trailer behind it and it had no problem going through the mountains at 70+ as long as I let it breathe. You have to downshift these engines and let them rev. If you are coming off a big twin with the low end torque and never having to shift, of course they feel weak. But an 883 WILL GO if you let it rev and use your gears.

My first street bike was a 77 XLH. It was a 1000. I bought it in the late 80s and rode it all through the 90s. I rode it in Laconia many times, trailered it to Daytona, and it gave me many miles of pleasure. It was electric start so that was great. I sold it for three times what I paid for it in the 2000s and bought a 78 FXE. I don't ride much anymore I just putter around town but I loved my Sporty.

I really like your content. And when it comes to the sportster, it's a bike that I really love. I currently have 2. One's a 2003 xlh with mild customization, and it's such a fun bike to ride, and the other is my 1988 883 with a buell xb12 conversion with xb9 pistons. This little bike was a factory 883 that got totaled when I got hit by a horse trailer that broke loose at the bumper hitch, had no safety chains, and come flying into my lane hitting the rear swingarm right behind my leg. About 45 minutes to an hour after the accident happened, we checked the engine on the side of the road, and it still ran, so I made a deal with the gentleman who owned the trailer, and settled for cash, and loaded the bike on a friend's trailer, took it to his shop, and basically used it to build what I have now. It's the original 883 on a Pauchgo rigid frame with 35° rake, no stretch, and the factory front forks, with the 19" front wheel. The front wheel is a black 9 spoke mag with the polished relief cuts, a chrome dish rear mag, a Chica ribbed rear fender, and a Cole Foster gas tank. The first rendition of the bike had the factory engine with an S&S super E shorty carb, and custom exotic choppers fuelies exhaust, with the dyna s dual fire exhaust. Unfortunately the front cylinder predetinated, blowing the front piston and grenaded the engine. Luckily the bottom end was undamaged, and after flushing the cases, checking the bearings and seals, I was able to look into fixing the engine. The build it is becoming is Sportster 883/ Buell xb conversion that has .500 lift Andrews cams and 4140 chromoly adjustable pushrods, Jims roller rockers, accel 35496 adjustable ignition, and stealth super coils, and 12:1 compression, with the same S&S carb, and exhaust. This is insane power for the 4 speed transmission, and won't have too much more top end, but this bike's gonna be an absolute rocket on the low end, a blast to toy with. I've had a lot of bikes, and this one still to this day is by far my favorite! These bikes are the best blank canvas motorcycles made. That's for sure. And on another note, for anyone who thinks small bikes can't be fun, find the bike that fits your style, do some research, and you can almost always find ways to make it better. I had an 07 Vstar 650 classic, j-slammed with a some carb and breather work that was an absolute blast to ride! Anything can be cool with a little bit of time and effort. Buy what you like, make it your own, and forget about the comments of the haters. Your bike should fit your personality and your attitude. If it accomplishes that, then you have a winner. Like I said, great content!!! Keep it up!

I've done some decent sized road trips and rip my Iron Lady around town like a wild goon and shes a total joy. I've been told from some older riding buddies of mine that these sportys are built like tanks and the Evo motor is pretty bulletproof.. and man they are right. I've done some riding that had me question if I was gonna bust something and have been a little poor on maintenance at times, but she WILL run lol. But when riding with bigger bikes (Low Riders and Street Glides, etc.) its wound out and on its last breath, while they're just taking a walk through the park.. Go Figure, right? Bigger bikes, More leg room. But that's where the cons end for me. I'm able to chug along on my daily commutes, go city-hoppin' and much less "bar hopping," As well as carrying the occasional passenger for some added fun. The Iron is definitely a bike that has earned its place in my heart and soul. And my trust. I'll run this machine till the wheels fall off, but i think I'll start to break apart before that time comes.
Good Vid, Brother! Ride 'em like you stole 'em! Got my subscription.

Mine Iron 1200 keeps up with every other cruiser I’ve ridden with. In a lot of cases the acceleration is better due to the “light” weight compared to the Softail models and especially the baggers. It’s not super comfortable for crazy long trips, but I ride long road trips regardless! I can be going 90mph down the highway and it still has more power to give.

Well I love my sporty. Its what a Harley is supposed to be, sounds fantastic and still has that Harley feel. It isn''t a Honda with a Harley logo. I solved my main issue with the bike "cruising speed". When you go over 70mph it turns too many RPM. I put a 31T pulley on the front and now it cruises great in traffic. Cost of the upgrade was $$350 with labor included. You won't be popping wheelies but there was plenty torque to spare to give this bike overdrive. Some people even bump up to 32 teeth on the pulley which gives you 10 MPH more on the freeway at 70.

Yeah, I'm going to pile on with the pro Sportster crowd. Being of a certain age, I remember when Harley made essentially two bikes: The Harley 74 was the big bike. 74 means 74 cubic inches, or 1200CCs. It was a bagger, with 3 main customers--police and military, Ma and Pa Kettle as a retirement touring vehicle, and young rebels. The young guys chopped the bikes to take weight off and made some brilliant looking designs in the '60s and '70s. Stuff of legend. The other Harley was the Sportster 900 (883). Came from the factory already stripped down. Just a big engine with a bare bones frame around it. Totally cool. Today's Sportsters have gained weight, added engine isolation mounts, etc., but they are still awesome bikes in their own right. I had a '97 1200 which I tricked out a little with beefed up suspension and a few other goodies. No rubber mounts. So other than rattling my teeth after 70 or 80 miles, it did everything. Commute, California back roads, highway. All good. Sportsters rule!
In the interest of full disclosure, I had mostly Triumphs as a kid, and now ride a Milwaukee 8-driven Low Rider.

I'm late to the party here. I'm a chick and I ride an 2014 883L (Superlow). Not as cool as the 883 Iron but for me its a good ride. I'm short and it fits me. I have breast cancer and one arm is a little weak. The weight and size is good for me. My husband has a Nightster 1200. I enjoy riding it too. But I'm just comfortable in the Superlow. If you need a little more umph, get a better exhaust and do a stage 1. I went with the SE air cleaner. I will be doing Vance & Hines slip ons to open up the air flow. Ultimately, I will do a 1200 (maybe 1275) conversion. Before you say just buy a 1200, my Superlow is the coolest color - Amber Whiskey. I can't find a 1200 in that color. I've looked. So the decision has been made. Keep the bike and make it reflect me. No pink. No bling. Just Willie G and me cruisin. Thanks for your great vid of the much maligned 883. Like it, like the look, get a lot of compliments, thumbs-up when I'm going down the road, but have to admit I thought it would have a lot more thrust than it does. I may be in the minority here, but I find the Iron 883 to be HD's best looking stock bike (though I admit to digging their redesigned softail line, especially the new Fat Boy). I think the 883 in matte black looks even better than the 48. I would happily tool around on this bike all day long around town with some light freeway time. It also has the added benefit of sounding amazing (with aftermarkets this thing sounds like a monster!). While not a "performance machine" (not trying to be), it has plenty of oomph for the average rider, and even comes in at a pretty decent price-point for a HD. I have ridden PLENTY of bikes smaller than the 883 in the past that were great commuters and really fun to boot, and the 883 is great in keeping with that premise.

Always rode CB 750 Honda's ,so that may be why I feel more comfortable with mids.
I'm 69, 5'11", 150 lb. and still get out and stretch the belt on it quite frequently. lol It's light and fairly quick. Crotch rocket? No
But it gets down the road, sounds great, looks good, and I enjoy it. It doesn't have the smooth ride like the bigger bikes but I can still stay in the saddle non stop for two hours. That's with the stock seat too! Only issues I've had was the junk stock clutch's. I went to a 9 disk Barnnett and talk about smooth! It has screamin eagle slip ons and sounds great.

I just bought a Screamin Eagle 1200 conversion kit. It’s being put on during Winter storage at my Harley shop. Can’t wait to test’er out. With my short shots and fuel pak I should get around 80 hp and 75-80 foot pounds of torque.

How would you stack the 883 against the Scout 60...? Saw a vid on one of those earlier and kind of like the styling a bit more

    • @JonsMotoGarage
      @JonsMotoGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I haven't ridden the scout sixty. The scout bobber was definitely quicker from what I recall, and a bit smoother with the newer tech. I'd say the scout edges it out in the fun factor for me. However, the sportster has tons of the aftermarket options depending what you want to do. Both great options imo.

Anybody who calls it a girl's bike has never kick started a cold XLCH with the magneto ignition. Even more with the old Linkert carb. It took a couple of extra kicks with the choke closed, while holding down the kill button. (no ignition switch in those days). Back then in cold weather I would drain the oil tank when I parked it at night, and take the oil indoors over night

I’ve got a 2022 iron 883. I love it,, I mean I prefer my street glide for cruising distances down freeway… but cornering .. going down side streets in the neighborhood it’s way fun on the 883…. I recommend anyone who wants a Harley but has no or little experience.. it’s a better option to start IMO _ why? Because when you make a mistake you can manhandle it a lot easier than an 800 pound bike.. learn your techniques on it first…it’s not a real light bike.. but it’s not really heavy either… you can stop from dropping it with your strength. You can’t do that with a 850 pound bike.. learn in the lighter one.. you’ll be glad you did.. because when you hop on the big one.. you’ll already know what to do..and your learning curve is cut by 90%

If you think the Sporty vibrates try an old EVO. I have a 93 Heritage and at 70mph it really vibrates but that it is the character of the old bikes. I’ve had a 93 and 94 Sportster and they were good bikes and I really enjoyed them. Been looking for one for a while now since I’m in my seventies and the Heritage is a lot heavier than a Sporty and a lot easier to maneuver around.

I like the Sportster. I just prefer the 1200 Sportster which is my main ride (2019 Forty Eight). That extra 300 just makes it a lot of fun for me. Super quick and fun, nimble for a small guy like myself only weighing 140 it's like there's no one on it haha. It just flies. Ride it like a sport bike and have gone on 500 mile trips with it.
My first bike was a 1989 883 and I still have it as a project bike and would love to get it up to a 1200 conversion or 1275 if possible, as well as making it into a scrambler to tour on and camp on when off roading.
Just so much you can do with these babies. Tuned and customized right and you can keep up with any Harley and leave them in the dust in the canyons and curves.
But yeah there are a lot of tools that like to crap on the Sportster.
Back in the day a lot of the real dudes were on Sportsters. I'm amazed at how it's treated as less than other models or less worthy of the Harley name when it's older and more reliable than some of these bikes that have the "Heritage" label.
    I love Sportsters.
Would love one with 1500 CCs and 6 speeds down the road.

I rode my bikes to work every day except when it was raining, freezing rain, snow, or below zero. Today, guys only ride on weekends & they can only ride 50 miles maybe before stopping for hrs. in my part of the planet. The Sportster will land you & it in jail. It's fast enough. Love the Sportsters because in rural areas it does the job very well if you're not speed crazy. It'll take you a very long way. Had one, Superglide. No Blacked out bikes for me anymore. Believe it or not, a blacked out bike gives the public a target to go after. They don't see it. And with cell phones today-absolutely no black bikes. Now I'm 5'5"/ lost 4 & 1/2" in height. The Superglide has mid controls and that bike fit me perfectly. Too bad they don't make them any longer, Great bike.

Never rode the 883. But it has it’s place and they keep selling them. Usually people who are too big for them don’t like them. I’m 5’11” and going to put forward controls. Personally I’d get the 1200 but if it’s money or where you live that doesn’t allow it then get the 883.

I found a like new 2009 883 Custom. With a Harley windshield for under $3K. I love it, it does start to feel like your pushing the motor when you get over 80mph, but I;m not sure I need to go over 80mph right? It has forward controls and will cruise 200 miles on one tank of gas. Its not a bad highway bike in my opinion. Great for all day trips or overnights it has a limited range as far as comfort... would I want to take it across 5 states? No. No, I wouldn't. Could you? Yes, yes you could.

Edit: I commute on my 2019 iron 883 everyday. Even in rain.....
I put a frame mounted front fairing on my iron 883 and now can cruise comfortably at 80 mph. I can keep up with my buddies dyna now, I’m no longer a massive parachute at 70 mph. It improved my gas mileage as well.
Put a shark nose style fairing on and keep up with everyone else at highway speeds. Easily.

Just bought this bike, 2020 model, last night! Do NOT walk in the Harley dealership unless A: you absolutely, positively, cannot purchase a new bike right now no matter what kind of deal they make you! Or. B: you have incredible, tremendous, godlike, willpower and can keep saying NO to them regardless of how great a deal they keep offering you! I actually was looking for a bike since my son wrecked my Honda SilverWing 600 scooter and the insurance refuses to fix it because he wasn’t on the insurance! I was actually wanting a metric bike but made the mistake of walking in the Harley dealership! The metric place I went to first was a joke compared to Harley! A BAD joke! The Harley place made me feel at home and part of the gang right from the start and just made a big, huge, experience out of the whole process! They know what they’re doing for sure! No matter how much I asked for they kept giving it to me so I bought it. it wasn’t like they had to twist my arm. I went to look at the street rod 750 but absolutely HATED the seating position! It was terrible! So, so, incredibly, uncomfortable! No way I could sit on that bike for any length of time! I actually cannot believe they make a bike that uncomfortable? Weird? I always dug the 883! Such a good looking bike and just dripping with cool. I didn’t think I could afford it though but no matter how low I wanted my payment he did it. 👍😁. I also got a free MSF course so I can get that M on my license! In Oklahoma here they basically just give you the license if you’ve passed the MSF course (at least the Harley Davidson course they do) anyway I love the bike! After riding that scooter for a month the Iron feels like a luxury car compared to a go cart! Completely different riding experience all together! Definitely more power and much better handling, much better! Well, I’m going riding.....
