NOTES:
*You only need to take down about 3000 HP this time. Much easier here, especially since his attacks don't hurt nearly as much as in the DS version (compare whenever we're controlling him, where he'll deal roughly 2500 with an -aga spell...and that's at the start of his tale!).
*TAY question: someone on GameFAQs says he ends up with about 500 more HP than Cecil @ Lv99; they're both Lv64 now, and Golbez is about 1000 HP behind (~4000 as opposed to ~5000). No apples used. Does his HP growth go nuts after a certain point or something? If so, then I'd assume somewhere around Lv70, since that seems to be a special number for these games...
*His Pressure ability in TAY is basically a watered-down version of Binding Cold, or rather, a free Hold spell. I find myself never using it since he's supposed to be, you know, KILLING things.
*Incidentally, you can find wild Shadow Dragons in TAY...there are two variants; the lone, stronger one may very rarely drop a Black Tail.
*Binding Cold? Hah! How about eating repeated Binding Glares from that bitch of a Rydia lookalike!
*Incidentally, the sprite here is technically inaccurate; he's left-handed, and so should be directing spells with that hand, not his right (I suppose the "raise your right hand for spells" thing in TAY is just a consequence of the sprites normally facing to the left). Speaking of which, where the hell does he get those bracelets and anklets and earrings anyway?
*Things I learned today; Ultima Spark DOES break damage limit naturally (to the tune of 26000 damage to boot~), and I hate Deathmasks.
**Although if you want it to do anything near good damage (considering it's a limit-breaking band and all), you really have to focus on Cecil's spirit-boosting equipment, often to the detriment of his attack power...while the Ragnarok sword goes a good way to mitigating that with its +10 Strength/Stamina/Spirit, most people will probably pull their hair out just trying to get the thing. I know I was getting frustrated trying to get a good recording... And you really should be giving it to Ceodore anyway to help with his in-a-pinch Curagas.
*Teleport is a white magic spell...Golbez is a black magic user, he shouldn't be able to do that. Might be Zemus granting him that ability, I don't know. Cecil, on the other hand, does know the spell naturally, but apparently didn't bother practicing, since he's not very proficient at it. (I know about gameplay purposes, but I like to wander out of that sometimes)

**I suppose much of this can be attributed to his true personality. He's not shy per se - he can communicate with others well enough - but he tends to keep to himself and generally doesn't speak unless he feels it's necessary.

However, I still had faith... faith that Rosa and Ceodore, and my friends would
come to my aid... But I must admit, I certainly did not expect you to be
among my saviors.
Golbez: Cecil...
Cecil (stepping closer): So... thank you, my brother.
Golbez: If you need to thank someone, thank Fusoya.
Cecil: What?
Golbez: It was he who sent me to you...putting his own body on the line in
the process.
Cecil: Fusoya did that!?
Golbez: He did.
Cecil: I am impressed Fusoya still thought enough of you to do that.
Golbez: Perhaps. But I have had enough of hiding.
Cecil: Oh?
Golbez: Indeed.
Cecil: So you are no longer ashamed of your name, Golbez?
Golbez: No, I have to live up to my sins...and myself.
Oh, the dialogue wasn't changed from the Wii version. I expected the retranslators to replace "body" with "life".
Rydia’s return still gives me chills. :)

Agreed. When first played this as a kid I was freaking out. Then I felt that "On your left..." moment and jumped out of my seat when the music changed. Such a great scene.
Side note the severed reanimated hand stealing the crystal and teleporting away was the perfect way to show you that Golbez in any form was still a threat after that battle.
I gotta admit that summon animation was pretty top notch!
Much better than the lazy atrocities of the Pixel Remaster series.

@@lowhp_comic I agree! The 2D era FF games deserve so much better than that Pixel Remaster garbage! I've heard they even removed all the added contents of the subsequent ports. What a damn shame, especially considering the Pixel Remasters are all overpriced.

I always assumed that the reason we could beat Golbez so easily was that he was still shaking off Tellah's Meteor spell.

Golbez and his elemental lords are one of my favorite boss/mini bosses in all of final fantasy

I love the artwork, but compared to DS version this is so ridiculously easy.
DS Golbez is probably around 50 times stronger. His attacks are mass version and do around 60% full HP damage. He attacks as fast as your party and absorbs all elements but ONE, which is changing all the time. And even if you hit him with the ONE weakness full power summon - he can still take around 5 such shots cuz he is healing himself if you use reflect.
Freakin beast.
Ds version is the hardest
Psp and gba ones are barely equal imo
The Android 3D version is not so hard tho, it's actually kinda Not too Hard and Not too Easy, thus giving quite a challenge

When i played the DS version i made Cecil cast Libra to see Golbez's weakness (which was ice for me) and made Rydia summon Shiva. He was defeated instantly.
@@crashertn4951 So you want to tell me that not only did Golbez not drain Rydia MP but you managed to deal 9999 damage in one hit with Rydia. At this point she is level 30 unless for some ungodly reason you leveled child rydia above level 30.

one of my favorite bits in any game. this one will always get me.
I always found it interesting that Rydia/Rosa are foils to each other. black mage/white mage, Rydia's saved your party a bunch of times whereas Rosa was a damsel in distress , Rydia's independent/no love interest while Rosa's caught in a love triangle.
And can't even cast fire on her own
PSP version was tooo easy but DS was a lot harder.
Well I just to play the game on the psp because it is a fun and it is something that i accept for what it is and difficulty is not my concern anymore!
Joe Houghton, True! And the GBA is hard as well! At least the cave where the Dark Elf is is really hard! Cecil can’t use anything, there are no Shard Swords for that version, it is BULLSHIT!!!!

DS version is just fucking cheap and unfair. They gave it a stupid gimmick that makes it impossible to win unless you get sheer dumb luck. People keep saying, "Cast libra to find Golbez's weakness and summon the weakness with Rydia," but by the time you cast libra he drains her mp! That's not harder, it's unfair and terrible game design.
So they could defeat him but couldn't stop a hand from grabbing the crystal? FF protagonists are so incompetent at times.
Heh... you should check out the cutscenes from Ninja Gaiden's 1 through 3 :D
Think about it this way.
If they defeat him and took the crystals right away, the rest of the story wouldn't happen. There has to be some confict for the game to continue.
Then again, they could've gone for a different route with the story.
At least in the original games you control Ryu Hyabasa and not have to be concerned about controlling a woman who can be powerful; however lacks his speed and being annoying when developers are being childish and adding filler! I am not a thief,but I do not waste my TIME looking for something when I can just go on game faqs and READ,LEARN, and GAIN an understanding of the mechanics locations of the collectibles and doing from the comfort of my own Home!

Not sure what is more bullshit, the psp version where Golbez just Idle Hand's the crystals, or the DS version where he just stands back up like "lol not dying here, also taking the crystal, bye!"
You kinda ruined that climactic moment of Rydia's return with that item screen lol.
I love golbez in this game, his puppet people say were wonderful, and savvy, and we love to kill, golbez is such a nice guy were going to give him your head as a present!

Unknown Banana That's because the D's version is like 2 times more difficult plus this psp version was created using the corpse of the Snes version of FF4. Notice how Golbez immobilizes them and Kain is allowed to jump into the air unscathed. in the DS version, Golbez will wait for Kain to land before launching his attack... and he's stronger and the DS version is just more epic to be honest. Better music, voice acting, a more realized world, and cut scenes.

It's because they screwed up the ATB conversion. Despite what many people think, it is in fact far, far easier than the original SNES FF2. I was extremely disappointed they didn't correct it from the GBA version. It basically ruined the game.
Leaps and bounds better than the Pixel remaster.

the banner on the top of the screen states the abilities being used ie "black fang" when the shadow dragon was killing the party, "radiant breath" when rydia summoned her mothers mist dragon etc. it didn't say esuna when she healed cecil but its the same animation as a cure with gold needle

Isn't it a bit redundant to have a black mage use summoning magic when they already use black magic? I guess this is why future games had characters like Yuna and Garnet who were basically white mages with summon spells because it made them more versatile.

Well probability is determined by something that is random that it is called luck! The developers of this game forced him into taking the punishment and Kain is being infamous and not concerned about being a hero; however he sided with Golbez and chose to be a villain! The random number generator or rng can be manipulated and Vampires are in this game and you have risk of facing them and a chance of losing your progress and it is vexing!
@KrutoyPostowoy Yeah, I hated that battle, took me quite a while before I got a recording I was pleased with. Assuming no Adamant/Onion equipment, you're pretty much screwed if you can't slow him beforehand. I don't recall him healing himself after the barrier shift though.
Rydia-ex-machina for sure, but why did she lose her white magic?
While on the Feymarch She focused on the Black Magic And the Summons(Not even Tellah, who was a Sage, knew EVERY Spell, And later on TAY Leonora learns ALL White Magic, but lacks the strongest Black Magic spells And is less competent than the other mages, It's about their natural proficiency)

You have Rosa. If you had Rydia who could use white/black/summon, shed be OP. Tellah and FuSoYa were nerfed by having terrible stats and MP.
But she has some healing/status capabilities with Sylph and Asura summons.

I am having an issue with my PSP game where Cecil keeps walking left if I don't push any buttons and even on the select screen the arrow keeps scrolling through the items, as if the button is "stuck". Did you ever encounter this or does it sound like a problem with my copy of the game? I am not having this issue on the PSP homescreen though.
How to do a screen break effect like that?

@AquaRing i have lvl40 Rosa who I used to cast Reflect on my party so he couldnt touch me but when he casts his spells on me they reflected and healed him because of absorb.

The Dreadful Fight is used for more dynamic encounters in the game. Golbez is a major antagonist for a while so it makes sense.

AquaRing well the Reasonbehind me thinking of older rydia and the unicorn horn is I played the gba version and esuna has the same animation as using a UH 😅
