It's so rote and cheesy now, but anyone too young to remember has no idea how MINDBLOWING all this DRAMA was in an RPG story back in the early 90s. Before that, most RPGs didn't even have a plot (Dragon Warrior), or if they did certainly not with any kind of cinematic presentation (Ultima), and definitely not with music close to being this good (the SNES Final Fantasy music still to this day sounds better than 90% of all Square music since). It's kind of like how the word "cutscene" didn't even exist until Ninja Gaiden in 1989. It didn't matter how dumb the story was, just seeing an actual plot was mind blowing.
I’d love to see these crisp graphics, the 3D character battle animations, and the original game’s music. Or a Trials of Mana overhaul for the 30th anniversary.

Man, the sprite work in the 2D PSP Final Fantasy games was fantastic. Such a shame they didn't do something similar for the Steam versions, instead just porting the shitty mobile ones.
I also wouldn't be suprised if it was an actual big bang because we've seen characters like Ultimecia and Exdeath do way more impressive feats of multiversal size

a little tip that can help, use edge's steal ability to grab dark matter before using the crystal. Stealing the dark matter will weaken the big bang by 20%
We had the Cloud of Darkness in the Crystal Tower raids. We had Exdeath and Kefka in the Omega raids. We had Ultima and the Lucavi in the Ivalice raids. Here's hoping we get Zeromus in the Endwalker raids!
This may be the case seeing how a certain individual is in a cutscene sitting with all four crystals. If we get it, I am sure it will be a legendary encounter

Even though I love the new Pixel Remastered on Steam, I still greatly prefer the PSP here. The graphics, the animations, the bonus dungeons and more. It really feels like the ultimate way to play it. The Pixel Remastered lacks a ton of the later features.
As someone who has played the Pixel Remaster, I can say that its in-game music is incredible. It does need the extra dungeons and stuff in the PSP version, though...

My fave version of ff4 and fave ff game of all time. I remember playing ff2 on the snes and being completely emersed in the first 20 minutes. It was not hard but was harder than the few other rpgs I played up untill then. like Breath of Fire 1+2 and Dragon Warrior. Zeromus was crazy !!!
Consider how terrifying this guy actually is, when you think about it: He's literally an alien who sought to conquer the world by wiping out all life, and his hatred for all other living things, your party especially, is powerful enough to not only remain after his death, but attain sapience and literally try to kill you all over again.
I remember showing this fight to a family member a long time ago and she described it as an "alien space turd". I might start using that descriptor more, it's a good summary of most FF final bosses look like.
I was watching Zapper101's longplay of Final Fantasy IV (PSP), but unfortunately is was discontinued right at the battle with Leviathan at the Feymarch. At least now, i finally get to see how the final battle gets done.
@@oriondancer I don't agree, Neo Ex-Death is an amalgamation of all of the evil spirits that were sealed in the tree and that's what the enemy spirit looked like. I get that Zeromas is suppose to be the guys hatred but you would not be able to tell that from looking at the sprite work. The proportions and angles are all wrong like it's the work of a person that has never drawn before, basically it looks like something I might have come up with.
Its a bypedal bug but with pronounced flesh and no exo skeleton. It is evil incarnate, as a metaphysical entity actually turned physical. Hence, the control over space (big bang, meteor, supernova and bringing you to another dimension). As you see, he is spectral and only turns physical when the crystal is used on him. That's my interpretation.
What are you all talking about. Every final fantasy has been good. Not story wise but more FF even they changed styles, the one thing I want is a fan demake of games like FF7 and now to look like this style. I don't care if the story is weak as long there's character development, exploring dungeons,fighting super bosses, filling up the beastiery of each every enemies defeated and viewing it (the only reason why I play a final fantasy game is to complete the beastiery while listening to the great soundtrack.)
Most likely you also seem to know what to equip in terms of helping everyone work best at their own abilities. Wasn't until an LP of this that I actually SAW that it wasn't the best idea to pay attention to what stats the equip screen shows.
@Chevitile it's a really good game :) you should buy it sometime, or find a ROM of the SNES/GBA/DS version somewhere. Twenty years old and it still holds up; it created, or at least popularised, a lot of JPRG so-called "clichés" that so many take for granted now.
@Chevitile for the bow-and-arrow wielding characters (such as Rosa, although she has a staff equipped because it helps with her magic and generally shouldn't be physically attacking in boss battles anyway), it affects the amount of damage they can inflict with the weapon. Arrows go in the dominant hand, and bows in the recessive; going the opposite way reduces its effectiveness to 80%.
This is the definitive version of the game, imo. I didn't care much for the 3D ds version, or even the original SNES version...but this version was fantastic and turned FF4 into one of my favorites in the franchise right up there along with 6, 7 and 9. I really hope they remaster Final Fantasy 6 in the same way they did this game. It certainly deserves that much and would be a lot better than the awful mobile port they did.
did they fix the big bang issue in later releases? i remember that each time he uses it, it hits harder and harder each time. first time he used it, only 1000 or so damage, second time he used it, 3000 damage, 3rd time, around 5000.
Replaying this version right now and I have to say that the later half of the game can be VERY hard for the unprepared which is pretty refreshing (I remember this game being too easy but boy was I wrong). I really like the difficulty of this title in general - not the 3DS version tho, that one is a pure grind-fest.
FF4 is not terribly difficult. After Years and especially the Interlude sections can kick RPG hardcore players' butts if they aren't paying attention. I remember winning many boss fights and especially the last fight by the complete skin of my teeth.
You want to play ff4 in hard mode ? Dont farm exp, flee all fights and doonly the bosses ;) I do a first try on the gba version ( i made to the final dungeon at lvl 37 but had to farm until lvl 55 and use rosa and porom to defeat zeromus ) and i will try on the complete collection
Wow, I honestly don't know whose design scares me more: Zeromus or Neo Exdeath Zeromus just looks like an endoskeletal alien hellspawn, which is disturbing enough, but Neo Exdeath is literally a massive deformed conglomerate abomination. Just imagine for a minute if Zemus and Exdeath fucked and had some sort of demonic love child. Now THAT'S the stuff of nightmares

Has anyone ever attempted with a different party? I faced it with Yang/Cid/Palom/Porom twice. Results were just fine. 1st attempt: Berserk'd Yang and the thing went down faster than I expected, although it used Black Hole to negate it (brushed off with Focus). 2nd attempt: Berserk'd Cid and won in great style with Palom's Flare after he was KO'd by a Big Bang. After those attempts I plan on taking Creator down with Leonora + the new 4 instead of Rosa + the new 4 (the standard party).

I faced it with Yang, Cid, Edward, and Edge/Kain(I intend to finish Zeromus without any mages) and I won almost perfect and even without a white mage or using Elixir or Megalixir(I used Hi-Potions around 4-8 times, I guess), however, all of them already had their best weapons, Godhand/Hand of the Gods, Flare Sledgehammer/Fiery Hammer, Loki's Lute, Abel's Lance/Mutsunokami and Sasuke's Katana.
i was a little over 50 and managed to kill him, albeit i had cid replace kain, even though it didn't make that big of a difference. the only thing you need to make sure of is that your healer can survive big bang, and it doesn't hurt if most of the party can as well. needless to say rydia was dead throughout my entire fight, and it dragged on for about 30 minutes.

First the king has to be the villain, but then it turns out it's all Golbez's fault, then it turns out this Zemus guy is the true villain, then there suddenly needs to be a Zeromus to be the final boss? And this game predates Persona 4 Golden by over 20 years?
Psp have the same content than the gba version ;) the only new content is the option to use triangle to switch between character, super useful when your white mage turn arrive and no damage to heal ^^
Row after row of TV screens. PLD, DRG, WHM/RNG, SMN, NIN. Think about it. Zeromus is saying it is stupid ("dark") to believe a meteor would hit through to the core. (A heavily armored PLD with ability to self heal and cover /A heavily armored dragon knight with "Jump" aka instant meditate / An overpowered Summoner [who uses pets] and magic / A healing wizard who shoots arrows from far away / A dual Ninja with blink magic who throws from far away)
You have a chance against him at level 50, he is much easier with two white mage and little tip i learn recently, if you use Flare on him after he shakes, his next big bang willbe nerfed ^^
know the things you gotta do, its just masterclas if you can deal it with a low lvl char, i probably would lvl around 65-75 because i would break my neck xD

@@jedcauffield1858 lmaoooo this made me laugh, btw the bug this guy is referring to is probably the one in the japanese and american version, where the ATB bar gets a little bit confused, skips a turn for you or gives one. I don't know how frequent this is though, because I played the european release in which it was corrected, and since the GBA/DS is region free console anyway, everyone is free to just do so, well of course emulating it is the easy part, finding an actual copy will be hard. Nowadays that PSP can be emulated very easily I don't necessarily see the point to play the GBA version, however it is still more than good enough for people who only have this one as an option, I vastly prefer it to the 3d versions for example.
God all the PSP animations and sprites are so fucking gorgeous, I'm forever depressed knowing 5 and 6 will NEVER receive this treatment

The term "cutscene" was first used in 1987 for the Maniac Mansion title, actually. But you're right on every other account.
I think DQ4 had a better story than FF4, and DQ4 came out a year earlier.
Phantasy Star for the Master System is an early innovator, with its Genesis sequel PSII released before FFIV having quite an interesting storyline.

I try to do a low level challenge after a test run on the GBA version i will attempt a run on PSP and i plan to use Cecil Kain the Twins and Rosa ;)
My party was Edge/palom/Cecil/rydia/yang if i remember correctly

On the PS1 version, I remember I couldn't beat him until a higher level either. What was it, like 60? Much harder than on SNES.
PS1 is the SNES but with longer loading times and better translation.
And also it's based on the 1st JPN edition (the one dubbed "hard type"), hence why the game is harder than the USA SNES version overall.

I didn't finished the GBA version but this is the only version I beat FF4 with my PSP.
Psp have the same content than the gba version ;) the only new content is the option to use triangle to switch between character, super useful when your white mage turn arrive and no damage to heal ^^

You mean the vampic sword, not really. It could be a life saver against normal enemies but it could kill you if used against the undead.

I don't see how you defeated zeromus at such a low level, I grinded to level 75 and think it'll be much easier to defeat him.
You have a chance against him at level 50, he is much easier with two white mage and little tip i learn recently, if you use Flare on him after he shakes, his next big bang willbe nerfed ^^
know the things you gotta do, its just masterclas if you can deal it with a low lvl char, i probably would lvl around 65-75 because i would break my neck xD

@@jedcauffield1858 lmaoooo this made me laugh, btw the bug this guy is referring to is probably the one in the japanese and american version, where the ATB bar gets a little bit confused, skips a turn for you or gives one. I don't know how frequent this is though, because I played the european release in which it was corrected, and since the GBA/DS is region free console anyway, everyone is free to just do so, well of course emulating it is the easy part, finding an actual copy will be hard. Nowadays that PSP can be emulated very easily I don't necessarily see the point to play the GBA version, however it is still more than good enough for people who only have this one as an option, I vastly prefer it to the 3d versions for example.

Nah dude, the DS version was awesome. It also had the orginally intended script, with all the young "Golbez/Theodore" scenes
