I really appreciate your videos. This one and the scarifying one especially as building work has ruined my front lawn. Can't wait for the warmer weather now to start the repair work. Thanks again and God bless 🙏
Another great video. When you renovated & overseed it would have been as level as you could get it - so for clarity please can you confirm : 1) a soil/compost mix on top of seed is appropriate? 2) Top dressing with USGA or 70/30 sand is primarily to fill in any small dips, voids & imperfections ? The use of say a Landsee compost spreader (I’m not promoting such) would distribute nutrients in the form of a compost (as opposed to sand - having very little nutrients). Your point about ( 100% ? ) compost alone being a poor levelling medium is interesting & noteworthy. I suppose I’m clarifying…… sand, soil & compost all have a place & their uses in lawn care ?
Hi Graeme My lawn is built from 70/30 sand/soil so there is a lot of sand already there. 70/30 is great for levelling or soil (screened is best) Compost is no good as it breaks down I didn't on this occasion want to get into why I'm using sand and everyone else should use soil as that would cause some confusion I always try and encourage people to use soil over everything else. But yes you are right in your comment

A compost spreader such as the “landzie” does pretty damn good job of spreading “dried” sand.. I actually bought a WALENSEE as it’s 50-60$ less then the landzie. Imo the welensee is better then the landzie and for less$$. Lobe the tool. Spreads sand dirt compost perfectly ..

Love the videos Robbie. Just bought a new house and the garden needs TLC and would love to do the majority of the work myself. Where do I start??? Should I start with scarifying, aerate, over-seed?

Love these videos. Always learn something. Where i live USGA sand isnt available. Which alternative is best for use on my lawn. Is play sand or river sand ok?
One one part of the side of my lawn, the last 20 inches or so slopes down slightly all the way to the edge. It’s about 2 metres in length What’s the best way to level this section ?
This whole concept of using sand to level your lawn seems to only be appropriate for fairly minor imperfections. I have a depression in my lawn caused by the removal of a tree trunk some years ago and the deepest part of the depression is around 6 inches. I'm not sure that there is a solution short of digging up most of the lawn, adding dirt and recreating the grass layer.
Thank u Robbie I like your explanations! I’ve never seen the mat method. I work in a restaurant kitchen , maybe I’ll borrow one and try that! I’m planning on doing multiple steps in a few weeks... dethatch, aerate, overseed. I assume leveling would come after aeration? Can u advise? Thank u sir!
Hi Robbie can you point me in the the right direction of getting my grass back to match the rest of lawn basically I’ve had the kids pool up all summer and packed it away yesterday it’s totally gone do I need to strip it out and reseed or will it come back with a scarifer and top dress ? Thanks again regards tom
Hi Robbie, great vids and tips, wish you were here around Manchester,… wondering if best to kill off and re- seed or scarify hard and back seed/ level and fertilise, I’ve some weed type grasses in small patches, killed clover and moss, sand and soil sports mix levelled in spring but needs some more on this autumn, advice welcome it’s approx 100sqm, so not huge, not sure how to post pictures, thanks from Alex Manchester UK
How to level your lawn: Step 1, start with a lawn approximating a putting green. :) Mine is REALLY wonky like probably a couple of inches between the peaks and the shallows, and only about 12 ft wide. Does this method still work?
I’m being a bit dim here, Robbie, but how does this help? Will the grass root into this and smooth out the bumps or is it just the sand levelling the ground? Won’t the sand blow away? Will it compress when mowing? I’ve got a really bumpy lawn with areas probably a good 3 or 4cm above the main level. Will that need tons of top soil to fix, rather than sand? Sorry to be an eegit!
Sand won't blow away. My lawn is made from 70/30. The 70 is sand and the 30 is soil It helps level out small holes in the lawn For most lawns, soil is a much better option 👍
Robbie - love you videos and obviously your lovely English accent. I have a quick question: I have a pretty decent size of lawn and unfortunately not easily accessible. The main issue I have is the subject of your video. The question does leveling the lawn in small steps make sense or would you recommend to take the hustle and ask a delivery company to deliver 2-3 tons of soil/ sand?
First up, I'm from Northern Ireland, not english ffs 💩 How much material you will need will depend on your own yard. My lawn was pretty level to start with...
Hi Robbie, Need to overseed and do some levelling on a clay soil based lawn. Am I best to fill big dips with sports sand and then a layer of soil for the seed the soil ontop of the seed too? Or would the levelling and overseeing need to be done at different stages? I'm keen to use the sports sand to try and improve drainage. Started drilling today to aerate too - given its a clay based soil, am I best leaving the holes empty and open or filling with sand? Thanks 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Robbie - I need some advice re my lawn: it grows between 1cm and 2cm a week during the spring/summer months, and I'm not sure why, or how I can get it to grow slower! I'm having to cut it every week to keep it looking tidy. Thanks in advance.
Robbie what would you recommend to top dress the lawn with I have a fine lawn made up of fescue and Bent. When I originally laid the lawn it was on a loam and sand mix.
That sounds like a nice lawn, good sand if you can get it. You should contact some local golf clubs, even walk in and have a chat with the greenkeeepers and ask where they buy their sand. The key thing is if you start using sand, get the right stuff and keep using it. This video should be useful to you th-cam.com/video/X3v2g6Hybps/w-d-xo.html
Fantastic video Robbie I have used both the drag mat and lute when I was an apprentice the mat was better for a large lawn a firm called Sisis made the drag mat and lute
@@Premier_lawns_official the lute was indeed hard work okay for a small area. The council I worked for 42 years ago had a Sisis Auto Trac for the sports centre were there had 4 football pitches and 2 rugby pitches plus an all weather surface it was like gravel on top of a hardcore base. The Auto Trac was a ride on machine which used a selection of implements like roller, lute and a rake
Hi, how do you fill massive dips in the lawn? This is a good dip is it a case of adding topsoil and resending it as it only part of the lawn near the flags that have dropped?
Been watching you channel for a while now and love the content. Recently moved house and the lawns needed a lot of work. Still not to my liking so im going to do a full lawn renovation in a few weeks time. Looking for some advice though, for a tree root protruding out of the lawn and lots of other separate roots about an inch or so in the soil. Basically in the thatch layer. Is there any fix for this?
I have a BAW problem. (Big-ass worms) they build worm-poop mounds a coupld inches or so high. When I mow with a heavy rider, they get smooshed flatter, but not flat. Then, the BAWs build the mounds again. I don't want to kill them, because the lawn itself is healthy and the soil is very alive, but I sure wish I didn't get bounced around so much when I mow with the rider. I'm old, but when i was little, I remember my older brother putting 2 metal rods in the grass and connecting them to an electrical cable. He would then plug it in to house power, and the worms couldn't get out of the ground fast enough. He wanted worms for fishing. I just want to get mine to go somewhere else. Don't want to kill them, just move them. Any ideas? Do I do what my brother did? Maybe with less power?
I have a ride on mower and would love to get the nice lines that you have on your lawn, any tips? I use a mulching plug, not sure if that makes a difference. Great channel. What about ye!
Hi Robbie, It looks like you cut the lawn fairly short when levelling. Is that to allow you to see the undulations and make dragging easier? What sort of length would you recommend?

Love these videos. Always learn something. Where i live USGA sand isnt available. Which alternative is best for use on my lawn. Is play sand or river sand ok?
Let's turn it around, do you have sandy soil? If not a high quality screened topsoil may suit your needs better
One one part of the side of my lawn, the last 20 inches or so slopes down slightly all the way to the edge. It’s about 2 metres in length What’s the best way to level this section ?
That sounds much more like a landscaping project that topdressing. Maybe would need to build the bank up with something then bring in soil to level
This video is perfect for you th-cam.com/video/3xzVmX4-STA/w-d-xo.html
Robbie, can you recommend any were in the North down area we're you can purchase desent sand for the lawn, thanks, Jim.
Best to phone round the quarrys
Hi Robbie, great vids and tips, wish you were here around Manchester,… wondering if best to kill off and re- seed or scarify hard and back seed/ level and fertilise, I’ve some weed type grasses in small patches, killed clover and moss, sand and soil sports mix levelled in spring but needs some more on this autumn, advice welcome it’s approx 100sqm, so not huge, not sure how to post pictures, thanks from Alex Manchester UK
We have a private group called the premier lawns community group on Facebook for stuff like this. The community can help you 👍
@@Premier_lawns_official thanks Robbie, have just re-watched your related series of videos, ,… will join group as well, thanks Alex, Manchester

How to level your lawn: Step 1, start with a lawn approximating a putting green. :) Mine is REALLY wonky like probably a couple of inches between the peaks and the shallows, and only about 12 ft wide. Does this method still work?
Your probably best going with the lawn lute for stuff like that 👍
#
@@Premier_lawns_official So, can I just chuck down a bunch of sand that will be up to 2 inches deep in places and the grass will grow through it?
@@fiddley that will need to be seeded
@@Premier_lawns_official Ah OK, I'll give that a try. Brill, thank you!
The 70 is sand and the 30 is soil
It helps level out small holes in the lawn
For most lawns, soil is a much better option 👍
@@Premier_lawns_official thanks very much, I’m guessing the roots bind it like on the sand dunes. I’ll give it a try, thank you.
@@Premier_lawns_official …my sincere apologies. Your Irish accent!

Hi Robbie,
Need to overseed and do some levelling on a clay soil based lawn.
Thanks 👍🏻👍🏻
It's hard to grow grass in sand. A good screened topsoil or 70/30 is what I would use
@@Premier_lawns_official a 70/30 for the overseeding and levelling out? Thanks for the quick reply 🙂
@@allanreid6612 yes for both :)
Hi Robbie - I need some advice re my lawn: it grows between 1cm and 2cm a week during the spring/summer months, and I'm not sure why, or how I can get it to grow slower! I'm having to cut it every week to keep it looking tidy. Thanks in advance.
How much are you feeding it? Maybe think about reducing it a bit
@@Premier_lawns_official hi Robbie, thanks for the reply - I don’t feed it anything!
You should show how to level a lawn that's seen some wars. This is a near perfect lawn.
What about ya Robbie fantastic 👏 video as usual
Thanks Finn 😊
Can I use building or play sand to level the lawn? Thanks
You can use whatever you like, the question is should you?
Fantastic video Robbie I have used both the drag mat and lute when I was an apprentice the mat was better for a large lawn a firm called Sisis made the drag mat and lute
Sisis make some great tools. The lute is too much like hard work for me haha
What is the best lawn sand to level a lawn. I only have a small lawn but it’s very undulating?
A good screened topsoil
Hi, how do you fill massive dips in the lawn? This is a good dip is it a case of adding topsoil and resending it as it only part of the lawn near the flags that have dropped?
add more soil
Do you have a link for the silver lawn level?
No I'm afraid I don't
Hi Robbie, which sand would you recommend? you mentioned USDA, what is that please, would sharp sand aid drainage?
Sharp sand compacts and it shouldn't be used. The sand I use is called USGA and is sports sand and is sub angular in shape and is free draining
@@Premier_lawns_official Thank you, should I scarify the lawn before applying the sand & is it ok to fill deep holes ( say: 2-3 inches) with the sand?
@@lawrencehenson8409 yes you can do that 👍 good way to get it into the lawn
How does adding 1mm of sand do anything for leveling?
Little and often is key
Been watching you channel for a while now and love the content. Recently moved house and the lawns needed a lot of work. Still not to my liking so im going to do a full lawn renovation in a few weeks time. Looking for some advice though, for a tree root protruding out of the lawn and lots of other separate roots about an inch or so in the soil. Basically in the thatch layer. Is there any fix for this?
Dig it out, if it's to big get a tree company in to grind it for you
@@Premier_lawns_official Top man cheers. Hopefully it wont kill the tree.
@@Alan-om8mr yes within reason, hard to give general advice at times, always apply common sense
Why would you want a flat lawn? What happens during heavy rain showers? Where does the rain water runoff drain?
Hi Robbie,
It looks like you cut the lawn fairly short when levelling. Is that to allow you to see the undulations and make dragging easier? What sort of length would you recommend?
The shorter your lawn, the less you can put on. That's something I didn't say in the video. I cut my lawn at 15mm
Just go with whatever your lawn is usually at
@@Premier_lawns_official great, thank you
