A storage drive is an essential part of a computer, and usually this would be a hard drive. But in the past years, SSDs, or solid state drives have become affordable for anyone. Solid state drives are much faster than Hard drives, and have no moving parts, so they are much less prone to failure, and are more reliable. In this video I compare advantages and disadvantages of ssd vs hdd, because there are a couple advantages of both. For example, hard drives are usually much cheaper and can have much larger capacities.

OK, I just finished watching like 6 videos on ssds. By far, this guy has the best voice, the best rythm and keeps it the most interesting.

I also want to add that the SSD lowers my energy bill, uses less power, less heat, and you stated perfectly, no moving parts at all. I'm going to get an external SSD drive for backup use.
SSDs don't last very long. They're really great for making your PC work very fast but absolutely not for backup.

A good article and I agree that the most benefits would be gained by using the ssd as the primary disk for the os. In my 25 years experience of using traditional hard drives only a couple have ever failed. I still have a few IDE drives form 2003 that work perfectly. Used as archival disks via a hdd caddy, they store some of my old film collection. Dont know if I could trust an ssd to do that.
I have two SSDs in my laptop. Didn’t cost that much for the 2nd one and now I have very fast extra space!

I installed a Samsung 750 EVO 256GB SSD over a year ago and it was a huge improvement. I edit hi-res WAV files from album recordings with Adobe CC 2017 and it has helped a lot. But I still use HDD for everything else as I can't justify the extra expense for an SSD for faster storage.
I finally got an SSD in my laptop 3 years ago. I'm so glad I did! I have a 256GB SSD for Windows and my programs, then I have a 1TB external hard drive for files. For video editing, I have a MacBook Pro running final cut with a 512GB SSD, then I have a 4TB external hard drive for file storage.
Why are you using final cut?!? Just use MS movie maker.
I would personally recommend the use of a relatively small SSD (120 to 240 gigabytes) as the boot drive, and high capacity HDDs for data storage. I would also recommend creating a clone backup drive, using a 2.5" HDD of a similar capacity to the SSD, via a SATA-to-USB adapter.

With today's prices anything below 500 GB makes no sense. $71 for 500 GB.

@INTJ-Scorpio-Sigma-Male SSD is a storage just like HDD. There are no special instructions how to use (as distinctive from installing) it. Only difference is that you do not defrag an SSD. if you have both SSD and HDD then you have to decide what so store where. As a general rule large media files should go to the HDD:

I use an SSD for my boot drive, but I use HDD's for storage as I am a data hoarder (19.5Tb of HDD space combined), and also use scratch disks for Photoshop. Windows runs better from an SSD but there is no way I'd be able to afford to buy enough SSD's for all my storage needs, and I will never use an SSD for scratch disks.

My hard drive has been with me ever since mt first pc. And it still runs fairly good. I'm impressed. I think I had it for about 5-6 years
I upgraded both my desktop and laptop to SSD just over a year ago. The biggest difference I noticed that Outlook started up a LOT quicker on the SSD. They're worth every penny.

I settled on a HDD because I knew of the SSD but didn't know too much about them. This video is just perfectly timed and I'm going with the SSD now, so thanks for sharing your input on that!

Used to have a cure 2 duo desktop PC. Was getting quite sluggish in use. Bought a 120gb SSD and it MASSIVELY transformed it. Fast boot, fast loading of programs. For day to day tasks it was as good as a new PC at the time. Only upgraded my PC to play newer game titles in the end!

Bigger capacity SSD's are faster because there are more chips that you can write to in paralel.

SSD is definitely the way to go. I think it is sad that so many computer companies only offer SSD in higher end laptops. SSD in lower end system would be best bang for the buck for most users.

I have experience. The computer of my parents used to be slow. And it got even slower over time and it came to the point that it frustrated them soo much that they called for my help. I decided to install an old SSD into the computer and then it was faster than ever.

Actually, SSDs are getting slower the more data they contain. Also, the reliability drops when the SSD is almost full. If you have a lot of RAM you could use a RAM disk to store your browser session and disable swap to avoid SSD tear.
Thats what overprovisioning software is for. Only use 400 GB of your 512 SSD, 180 GB of a 252, 90 GB of a 128, etc.

I personally have not noticed any slow downs with my SDDs set up but that said I moved any unnecessary caching of my SDDs drives and use Ram Drives for my browsing habits.
I plan on using SSD for gaming and keep my normal hardrive for other storage.
Good quality SSDs have around 7% overprovisioning included in a partition the user can't access. This is why you see SSDs with sizes of 240GB, 480GB andh 960GB. They're actually 256GB, 512GB and 1028GB drives respectively. You can bring it up to 10% if you want; however with good quality SSDs, it's really not necessary. Always check the specifications of the SSD with the manufacturer before buying.

I use both in a four drive configuration: One SSD small for Windows, programs and a scratch disk for Photoshop, a 4TB HDD for files and as an additional scratch disk, an 8TB HDD for games, and a 2TB SSD for games that either have long load times or have some IO/streaming issues on an HDD.

SSDs are very unreliable if they aren't Samsung. HDDs it pretty much doesn't matter what brand you buy, youre gonna get at least 4-5 years out of it.
I just got my first SSD ever (a 500GB Samsung 840 EVO) a few weeks ago. Am so happy, but couldn't imagine not having my large hard drives for long term storage and for big files like videos etc. (I have 1x WD Black 1TB drive and 2x WD Green 2TB drives.) Also, the read write lifespans of SSDs aren't that great right now, and I hope that that is improved.
I upgraded my Mac Pro early 2011 model (Intel Core i7processor) first with a 750gb hybrid HDD which sped up boot time enormously along with general speed increase overall. Now I moved the hybrid to the DVD slot and installed a 1tb SSD plus increased RAM to 16gb and the computer absolutely flies. Was planning to spend over $2,000 on a new Macpro but at this point the only real benefit would be in weight savings and 4K video editing for which neither is that important to me.

Most people would assume that if you left the device in optimal conditions, in the correct temperature and humidity, then the drive will last forever. This is actually untrue; data stored on a hard disk drive will gradually degrade, and data stored on a solid state drive will actually degrade faster. This is because NAND flash stores data as electrical charges, which leak away quickly in comparison with changes in magnetic domain polarity. In saying this, data on an SSD won’t start degrading for about ten years, although this can vary depending on the type of NAND memory used.
In terms of storage, factors such as temperature and humidity can have a big effect on the lifespan of a drive. Humidity for example can lead to oxidisation of metals inside both hard disk drives and solid state drives. High storage temperatures are particularly problematic for SSDs, as data degradation in flash memory occurs at a faster rate.
For day to day laptop or PC users, you don’t need to worry about the lifespan of your drive, whether it’s an HDD or SSD. With mobile devices that are carried around more, you need to take particular care not to drop them. If you’re looking to store data long term, it might be best to choose an HDD over an SSD.

So, I was gonna get a used 2015 iMac with a 1TB 5400RPM hard drive, but this video stopped me, and I bought a custom PC with a 240GB startup SSD, and two 2TB 7200RPM hard drives for games and storage. Runs great and I'm really happy with it.
If you make music (& video) SSDs are great. I have 2 X 2TB SSDs. One for the startup disk and one for my recording disk. Expensive (In Australia) but it makes a very big difference. I am glad I have them I just wish I could have 4TB HDs but my (desktop) computer is too old. I use the old HDs to back up the SSDs.
Before buying an SSD use a search engine with the following general terms [Brand Name of SSD manufacturer] [model number and/or capacity] DEAD/FAILED. So something like - *Sandisk SSD Plus 480 GB dead* You'll save yourself a lot of misery when you discover how many buyers now have an SSD that failed in a year or even a few months. HINT - don't buy that one! ;)
Remember the 3 2 1 Rule of backing up.
Have at least three separate copies of any important files.
Since drives and storage mediums do fail. You should have two different storage mediums.
Try to keep one copy of the file off site.
Just as an example. A portable Western Digital 4TB drive cost under $100. Buying an internal drive of the same size is about the same price. Not including the enclosure. I say if you have data backed up at home. You should invest in a good enclosure. By a 10TB drive if you are a data storage hog. Or a two 10TB NAS. Or something close to it.
Cloud storage is good if you can afford to store your massive data yearly. This is the bottleneck for most of us. Paying that yearly fee. Given the failure rate of most drives. It is more economical for most to just buy SSDs and conventional hard drives. That way your risk of total data lost is minimal.

Got a MSI for work. I Dual boot between the HD and SSD RAID 0. I boot to SSID RAID 0 for programming. Since the SSD is limited in space, I put my source in .vhdx files. When I need to work on a project I copy it to the SSD, mount it and work. When done I copy it back to the HD to save space.

yes they do but at much slower and controllable rate, you rarely get total drive failure like with hdd , with ssd you get sectors that are toasted over time so at some point you know you have to replace the ssd.
Yes they do, You can also control the rate of wear on them. A good quality SSD should last the average users well over 10 years. Most manufactures rate their SSDs by assuming the user is going to write between 20GB to 30GB per day every day. They're certainly more robust than HDDs. The larger the capacity the SSD the lower the wear rate. This is why I always purchase the highest capacity SSD I can afford.

I put ssd in every device I own from my work laptop to my PS4 slim (help on loading screen) to my Gaming laptop which has two hard drives ( Md.2 for win 10 and fast games and a sshd for the big files). But I love how ever device has less heat, faster speed and better battery time. If you need to store file get external hard drive or flash drives or online storage.

because it saves your session on your HDD/SSD, my old laptop used to be weird AF, and every time I hybernated it used up 1 GB of data, and did not delete it afterwards, that is fixed now. And dude, turning off your PC allows updates to install, I am sure you have a REALLY outdated OS.

I've been using HDDs all my life. My new laptop, however, has an SSD. And the difference *is* night and day! Programs boot in 5 seconds and a reboot takes not even 30 seconds! And I bought a 4TB Seagate expansion drive. The perfect marriage between storage capacity and boot speed!
So, you'd recommend a laptop with 512 GB SSD for a web developer and with an external HDD over USB 3.1 for video editing?

Thio, I use 5 external usb drives for back up of my 2 TB internal hdd and file storage and several of them are 1 or 2 TB. The cost of an SSD is prohibitive considering the smaller capacity per dollar . As a main " C " drive with operating systems , I suppose you need to replace the internal hdd drive with an ssd? Do new pc's come with or with optional ssd?

ThioJoe You're absolutely right. Solid state drive is tops. I have one and I use it with an i7 processor with windows 10. I boot up my computer in about 15 seconds. My only regret is that my solid state drive is 120 Gigs. It is a problem making videos since the drive is too small. Whenever I use the drive to 80% capacity my video editor fails. I had to migrate my editing to my second drive which is a terabyte hard drive. Next time I will purchase the biggest solid state drive I can afford. For the time being I use it for everything and then migrate it to my hard drive. It saves me a lot of time and I don't even have to worry about the fragmentation problem.

I'd only use HDDs for the parts of the directory tree that have a significant file fluctuation rate (like swap and /var) - best two HDDs run as a RAID-0 - and use an SSD for the actual system and other parts with a low rate of fluctuation.
I have this on my gateway box: It's booted up within ten seconds.

The company I work for recently changed to SSD,
the IT provider agreed the HD could be cloned to the SSD
A few days later they said they couldn't because of "partitions" and had to format the SSD.
So now we have an SSD formated and the HD (secondary) with all the original info.

You touched on a HD and an SSD on the same computer.
I was given two 128GB SSD's.
One for system and one for page file.
After a clean install the 'puter was noticeably faster.
BUT all my data would not fit on the SSD.
The Storage control panel and elsewhere allows some directories to be redirected.
This would be a nice topic for a video.
Associated with this are links.
The Apple directories in APPDATA were redirected to the HD.
(Only needed when I upgrade my iPhone.)
What links would you suggest for a knowledgeable user.
We all know a bad link can make a computer unusable.
The page file was assigned to the spare SSD for space reasons.
Alsp no need to backup the page drive.
After there was no noticeable difference.
With 16GB RAM, not much use of the page file.
I replaced the SSD with a small HD and the 'puter was just as fast.
My 'puter runs fine, so I did something right.

Definitely get one. I had a core 2 duo laptop and I loved the keyboard. It's useable again. Not great obv, but ok when I have to do lots of typing.
Watching this awesome and informative vid on my Samsung Galaxy Note 9. I didn't know what SSDs were and I was like, "When did these drives come into existence?" lol. That shows you how out of the loop I was lol. I recently bought a Dell XPS Tower that includes a 1TB SSD & a 2TB HDD (dual drives). Now it all makes sense. The SSD is super-fast and I'm storing my software programs on it from now on, while I'll use the HDD for storing my documents, music, photos & videos.

JOE; I purchased a SSD for my Lenovo thinkpad T-430 pro...My question is; do I have to back up my hard drive or copy my data & programs to a flash drive in order to reinstall on the SSD??? Is there parameters I have follow to make the new drive work???
