    The coolest free programs are the ones that are free as in freedom, not necessarily free as in beer, though that typically comes with. I actually voluntarily pay for a lot of free programs, because they're so good and I want to support the project.

    Another benefit of portable programs is that you don't have to check in what program files or app data folder their data is.
    Also, (very niche use case) at least at my school, the school laptops always reset most files (except in the user folder) after a reboot. Portable apps can just live in the user folder and stay usable even after a reboot.

    One I haven't seen mentioned here is called File Splitter.
    You know how there's a filesize limit when transferring files to some file storage devices, such as an SD card, even though you know there's enough space on the card/device? Well, you can take the file and split it into chunks. Then when the chunks are transferred, you can merge the chunks back up to recreate the original file!

    • @sunla
      @sunla 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@desild5869 that's interesting! I'll check that out in a few hours here - I had no idea 7-zip offers that feature, but I feel like that's something I should've guessed. I think 7-zip has to be acquired and installed anyway, and I'm sure some people are no longer installing it on fresh Win11 installations, since Windows now has native zip/7z/RAR support. But I always get 7-zip regardless because it has a lot more options to work with, and there are forks of it out there that can be used for additional, highly situational/specific compression support, like the LZ4/LZ5 files found in some Samsung firmwares (mcmilk handles those)

    For me the biggest advantage of portable apps is you can try checking the different boxes and options then easily reset back to "factory defaults" with a simple folder delete without having to remember what you experimented with. This avoids the annoying Windows habit of splattering preferences in C:\programdata, 2 appdata folders and various reg keys that likely won't get removed with a standard program uninstall.

    I've used many of these and I agree. The thing that bothers me is that this used to be the norm for programs back in the 90s but the industry pushed us to accept large bloated, non-portable programs. Understandably, some programs are complex enough that it would be difficult to do so but I think a lot of it is just laziness on the part of some devs. Of course this lends itself well to utility programs.

      They should be,?as the only difference is the install locations it of course depends on the application, for example if the application adds files based on if its portable or not,. But in general the only thing that chances is the install locations, so yes

    For Linux users, BRU appears to load up and display using wine. I didn't have a use case for it so I didn't test it any further. In wine, the z drive is apparently the root directory (/). I loaded the 32 bit, portable version.

    The Bulk Rename thing is really useful - I usually run a Mac which has bulk renaming built-in, but am on Windows from time to time and I was very surprised that Windows didn't have such a feature.. like why???

    For one of your videos at some point, could you go over what to do with the enormous zip files Facebook gives you when you export your data? I don't really understand it because when you open up the zip files, it seems like there's duplicates of the same folders, so you can't very easily begin to copy and paste them into one big folder. It's very strange.

    Not free (I mean it kinda is in the same way WinRAR is free), but for music production people, REAPER has a portable install option. It's actually what I chose and I don't regret it. Makes it so much easier to carry settings between computers when necessary.

    If you use the portable version of Bulk Rename Utility, will it still be integrated in the right-click context menu?

    • @forgotten893
      @forgotten893 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You would have to use regedit to export the right-click context menu from the installer version, change the value to your current portable version, and then import the file onto your new computer. You can keep the registry file in your portable folder and just import it on any computer you use. If you change the path from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, you won't need admin privileges to import, but it will only affect the currently logged on user and not other users on the computer.

    • @michamarkowski2204
      @michamarkowski2204 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In 99% cases no. The whole idea of portable apps is to not temper with the host OS. Some apps store settings in a file (e.g. config.ini in the root directory of the app), some don't store settings at all. There are apps out there to monitor disk and registry changes so you could check if specific app changes host's registry.
