    This boat is no longer a Warrior 38. You'll have to re brand the make and model. A "Spiffy 38" sounds appropriate.

    Speaking of Jokull, while I was out sailing and cruising for a week in the San Juan Islands, I spotted a very familiar looking dog being walked down the dock by a woman sailor. Is that an Icelandic Sheepdog? I shouted. She turned around with a look of amazement on her face, and said, “it is, how did you know that? No one has ever correctly identified this breed before”. So I told her about your dog and your channel, and here’s hoping you have a new subscriber!

    The fridge looks great! If you are not happy with the opening you have look at a regular chest freezer. They open like a door. That to me would be better than the little holes they normally put on a boat.
    You work is superior! Great job

    Madds, I can't believe I'm offering YOU a tip... Epoxy finishing, while wet, directly after applied you can "torch" lightly (low heat and very quick strokes) this eliminates nasty bubbles. I know I'm too late but, I thought I would offer the tip.

      With the three coats of epoxy topped with varnish, you gave me a great idea how to finish a mahogany dashboard for the upper control station of my boat. Looking to finish it with a non-glare finish so that sunlight won’t blind me when driving.

    They will look great, I used the 3 coats of epoxy, wet sanded with 600 until the surface was flat then put 3 coats of schooner gold varnish on top around the inside of my fishing boat wheelhouse and two years on it still looks great and it gets a fair bit of sunshine and traffic

    Mads - First time adding comments as I normally watch on TV and no way to leave comments. Have you thought about venting your cabinets? Most boats have some type of ventilation holes in the front. It is not too late for you. Look how Bavaria works it into theirs. Older boats usually have louvers. Good luck and I can't wait until I actually see Athena sail!

    I used exactly the same methode to varnish my self-built mahogany boat. Beautiful. I find that it is absolutely important to sand between the Epifrane coats. Before the last coat I sanded and polished to 1000grid and then applied the varnish. Next time I'd use the Epifrane 1k-urethane on the Epoxy. I find that the 2k tends to run out less smoothly and leave ever so slight brush marks

    Mads, i used that same epoxy, varnish method on the teak toe rails of my Pearson 28. I had taken them off the boat to refinish them in my garage over the winter. They came out beautiful. The day after I reinstalled them, I noticed skuff marks all along them, at what appeared to be even intervals. I quickly realized it was where the screws attached the toe rails to the boat. The Epifane I used cracked open when the screws pushed into the wood. That shouldn’t happen on your cupboards, but be careful!

    A gentle flash over with a blowlamp after applying the epoxy coats will bring any bubbles out of the matrix very quickly leaving them bubble-free, I have used this method with both float application and rolling and tipping and it works with both, just keep the flame moving, I did it in small circles but some do it in strokes, your choice, just don't incinerate the surface, hence the constant movement.

    Very interesting video, thanks!
    About PU vs XPS, I've read that the foaming agent used in the current PU foam boards is worse at cool temperature because it condenses, while the CO2 in XPS doesn't. But now there are better foaming agents that insulate even better and are also better for the environment.
    0.020 W/mK looks pretty good (and it's apparently not PU but a different foam).
    You can get Jackodur Plus with 0.027 W/mK.

    Mads, you will need a drain for the fridge, even with an airtight seal unless you only open it on days when the dew point is below your fridge temperature 😳
    Also handy when you clean it.

    • @stuartsmith5146
      @stuartsmith5146 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m thinking, also, that the extra spiffy “standing desk” opener will allow significant air circulation over the entire top surface area; the less material in the fridge, the more heat circulation. Perhaps a way to open only half at a time will reduce the intensity of temperature transfer.

    • @SailingSquib
      @SailingSquib 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cold air is heavier than warm air, it will not get out of the fridge and as he said if humidity is a problem he can fit always a drain.

    • @collinstrid
      @collinstrid 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have a chest fridge and you don't get condensation (cold air stays in bottom) but drain is SUPER handy when you clean it, and you don't want to have to add a drain with 1 gal of milk in the bottom.

    The doors look good, hopefully, you don't have many o any problems with wood movement. Time will tell I guess. The fridge has way more insulation than commercial fridges, I expect it'll be quite efficient.
    Discretion is the better part of valour. I think you made a good call on the dip in the hull.

    Ha! I suppose great minds do think alike. Before watching this episode I’d actually gone to Audible and down loaded a free book, and low and behold I chose “Two Years Before The Mast”. Enjoyed reading it as a young lad and now will enjoy it again. The boats looking good. I epoxy the exterior mahogany on my own boat usually with West System and apply Bristol, which is a two part urethane offering good UV and abrasion resistance.

  • @chrissnyder7968
    @chrissnyder7968 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you never plan on opening your fridge, air tight will work. We try to minimize our fridge and freezer openings as much as possible but condensation happens. If you have the time to install a drain it will also support cleaning said fridge once something inside spills. Spills happen - tops come loose, containers get bumped going in and out, “guests” can be careless .... Throughly cleaning a fridge, l’d say cleaning a head is the only job worse 🙂

    Hi! Tipping your undecoats of epoxy is a very good idea. But in order to save time and effort, you can preferably use a hot air gun to even the surface, It work very well, and in the end it is sanding time reducer. No bulbble resists to such a treatment. ... Cheers!

    When I built my 36 foot sailing catamaran, I used 2 part marine white paint inside, I used the same brand and color as outside but it was interior paint ( less cost ) without UV protection. After about 4 years it looked like I was a smoker, it turned dirty yellow from the sun ! Use UV protected paint inside also ! Troical sun rays get inside also ! Love your videos

    Where will the compressor be and how will you be running the lines?
    As you have made no mention of how you plan to refrigerate the box, could you be planning on an ice box only?

    Mads, did you provide a vapor barrier seal to all exterior joints between the insulation panels and to those panel ends? Water vapor will continually find its way through any cracks or crevices and condense when it reaches dew point. It even will make its way through the unsealed foam block ends, as the foam is not impermeable. I have seen a lot of cryogenic insulation fail due to damaged or improperly applied vapor barriers. I wish you well.

    I actually alternated coats of each on my tiller - turned out fine, lasts and lasts.
    The idea is to make a hard/soft/hard/soft sandwich, and the varnish has UV protection to stop the epoxy from yellowing.
    Anyway, that's my crazy idea of the day for what it's worth...

    I've wondered why people dont use epoxy instead sometimes.
    Holy cow, I wish everything sanded like that foam does! That looked like an orbital dual action light saber cutting those edges off!
    Oh and thank you for sharing some good pup action of Jokül with us!

      Timber moves. Epoxy doesn't. This is yet another reason these door and drawer panels are going to fail.

      @@MikeAG333 What are the other reasons?

    • @danielbuckner2167

      @@MikeAG333 That is true. Of course some panels are fixed and have no joints but I see what you are saying.

      @@nordicdust As I pointed out to Mads when he made them, panels of solid timber should have the panel area in the middle "floating" (ie not glued, and made slightly undersize) within grooves of the frame to allow for expansion and contraction. Mads glued them in. Cross grain movement is entirely different from long grain movement, thus these doors and drawer fronts will fail when the centre panels expand horizontally but the top and bottom rails don't. It's just in the nature of timber.

    Just keep the fridge full, water bottles if nothing else. Thermal mass once cold is easy to keep that way

    I'm in the middle of doing this process, myself (for my teak outside). I've been taking photos of it every day. My formula is two coats of 207-based epoxy, seven coats of Interlude Schooner Gold, two coats of UV-resistant polyurethane, sanding between every coat.

    I'd add a drain just in case. Makes it sooo much easier when you get ice buildup inside (especially when you are in high humidity areas like the Bahamas).

    Nice idea for the fridge opening, but it seems to me that if the top part was much lighter (some kind of sandwich with just 1cm of wood on the top or coriandre or something), it would have way more chances too work in the end (easier to open it, less force on the hinges, etc)

    I’ve used a similar epoxy varnish process this year with West 105/207 and Interlux 2-part varnish. Seems to apply nicely. We’ll have to see about durability.

    Thanks for keeping us entertained after a bit of boat work myself! I look forward to your videos every week. Great fridge. It was a shame to have to haul out your original galley that you made, but this looks verrrrrry spiffy. All the best from Canada. 🇨🇦

    I've been known to stay up that late,
    when the party was good.
