Finally putting the 1978 Long 460DT Tractor to Work - Until it breaks again! - VG IRL 004

  • Today we are sharing some video shot while we did some road repairs using the Long 460DT tractor. This was the second time I've had it out on the road, and was the longest and hardest we put it to work so far since prior repair videos.
    We used the front bucket to scoop and distribute piles of asphalt millings, and the box blade in back to smooth out high spots and fill potholes while also churning up the gravel road bed.
    We went from potholes so numerous you could not dodge them (and they were deep too), to a nice smooth road bed.
    Unfortunately the tractor seems to have a persistent fuel leak that appears to be coming from the diesel injection pump, so while it ran good, we have that to deal with. And the fuel gauge doesn't work still but nothing a dipstick didn't do!

    Injector pumps are notorious for leaking on these tractors. They use a cav pump which are fitted to various other tractors and they leak on everything there're fitted to. I have the same problem on my 445. Some people have solved the problem using an anti leak additive to the fuel although this stuff is intended to stop oil leals in the engine but seems to work in the diesel as well. I haven't tried it yet.

      Thanks!! I may need to try the anti leak additive and see if it helps. Worth a shot at least. Otherwise going to be either rebuilding or replacing.

    If possible I suggest not to change complete pump on tractor... leaks will be allways slightly present, more likely only gaskets on upper part are damaged and have to be replaced :) but don't wory this is quite common... if motor runs without blue or slightly white smoke, starts good, power is good, then do not touch pump and injection system despite some small corrections 😉 mentioned injection system is weak point on those motors and have to be maintained otherwise motor can be damaged

    I have a 460 with a loader. My issue I'm having my loader only works when the pto is engaged. Am I missing something there? I hate having the bush hog on while having to operate the loader.

    I have one of these tractors. It's really hard to find videos on the 550DT. I have an issue with the PTO. It will not come down. A spring fell off the back that engages and disengages the lift and drag and I'm not sure where it goes. Any pictures or videos on this aspect of the tractor. Thanks. Joe

    Hi, I have UTB 550DT which is very similar and that needs lots of work, am just wondering where you have been getting parts for your tractor, like starter switch and fuel lift pump ? Thanks
