      The thing you didn’t mention is that this car is basically less than 3 years old and you’re driving a used one. Seems like many people are deciding to get out of the 86 after a relatively short ownership stint for whatever reason.

    Yeah, I used to own a 986 standard Boxster flat 6. It only had 217hp, but it only weighed 2,700 pounds and was quick and very tossable with great brakes and steering feel. You don't need 700 hp to have fun.

    • @michaelsheedy

      A great pocket rocket. Keep the weight down, and you don't need gobs of hp to have fun. Heavy vehicles with ridiculous amounts of hp are overkill IMO. If a credit crunch comes, say good-bye to overkill.

    • @doyoulikecrystalgel

      Yep. This whole horsepower maketh the car business is getting ridiculous. Give me a lightweight, RWD, tossable 6spd manual car with a few creature comforts, and I won't care if it only gets to 100km in 6 seconds. At least I'll get to roll through the gears and have some fun as opposed to hitting jail-time speeds halfway through 2nd gear lmao.

      There is still a classic muscle car craze going on for big and small block V8s. And none of those beasts could break 6 seconds to 60 and most had hard time breaking 7 seconds. So 6 seconds is still very fast and exhilarating. Sub 3 seconds is downright painful and dangerous on many public roads.

    • @MKu64
      @MKu64 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@roddavis6327 You're comparing 2 cars and saying one's faster. But the reality is that when you drive the 23 BRZ/GR86 it doesn't feel slow at all (I'm also an owner of the current Type R). As a comparison - I prefer to drive the BRZ whenever I can - and drive the Type R whenever I have passengers. One of the reasons is that the Type R is way more comfy on the road - and when you have passengers you do honestly notice the difference in power with the BRZ. But when driving solo, although the power difference is there, it isn't a big deal of difference and the drive is more fun in the BRZ.
      So yes - if you have the Type R on the same track as the 23 BRZ, the Type R is absolutely faster - but the driving experience for me is better with the Twins even though the power is less than the Type R

      @@MKu64 Put in the little GR Corolla 3cyl turbo charged engine and the GR86 would still be relatively light. But it wouldn't have oil starvation issues and would be quicker where it matters.

    This is a great car for the price. To put in perspective I have a high hp R35 GTR and Z06, among others and want this as a daily. I test drove it and was surprised by it. It was punchy, handles great, lightweight and with the 6 speed manual was a blast to drive. Great value for the money. People say its way too slow but coming from high hp sports cars I disagree. Its not a rocketship but with the hp/torque numbers and price point its not meant to be. But it's quick enough to have fun in, especially with the manual 6 speed gearbox. I'm waiting to see about the rumors of the Corolla GR engine with the turbo being put in this for the refreshed version. I'm a N/A fan but that bumps the hp and especially torque significantly and is an actual Toyota engine not Subie, and the RTV and oil starvation issues with some. Either way I'll be buying this car. I want a RWD, manual transmission, lightweight daily and this ticks all the boxes.

    The Miata is a another example like this car when it comes to horsepower doesnt matter because the weight and driving experience. Ive always wanted a Miata or something like this. I raced dirt oval for years and I was in the 4 cylinder class. All the other classes were V8 but we were not even close to being the slowest class. We turned lap times faster then some of the bigger classes so its not all about horsepower. A little disclaimer are cars where not running stock engines thats if you wanted to be competitve but our horsepower numbers definitely were not that high because the majority of us ran modified versions of the 2.3 Ford Pinto/Mustang engine. Anyway good review as always Raiti. You and the crew take care and be safe brother.

      lol it's so overblown. No pun
      also "returning" it for a corolla isn't a clean swap. There's about a 10-15k (or more) price difference. I'd like a Corolla myself but I didn't feel like saving up anymore for it. So I opted to buy the 86 outright as I refuse to have a car payment

    I own a 2013 BRZ, and I’ve test driven the current GR86. It handles very similar to the 2013, but the power increase has made the current model so much better. Makes me want to modify mine. The big concern I have is the oil starvation found while people have been tracking the current model. I’ve also driven the Elantra N (i30 Sedan N in Australia) and it’s just a weapon. I’d probably get the i30/Elantra N if I were in the market now as it does it all well, except drift 😂

    I'm fortunate to have a new '22 Hayabusa and the thing has too much engine for the road to enjoy revving it out.
    However, it's enjoyable in the twisties doing legal speeds. I think I'd enjoy a GR86 even if it's doesn't have a lot of power. Engine seems more than peppy enough to be enjoyable.
