    Welcome back! Great tips! I've had to replace the battery cables on both my xj and my mj. The OEM ones are just barely a big enough gauge. Add years of corrosion and they fail easily. CPS sensor is a good tip too! I've been lucky enough not to suffer this, but I know plenty of XJ owners who have. Take it easy!

    My '88 developed a problem in which I'd turn the key and the solenoid would click, but the starter either wouldn't crank or turn sluggishly. I had the battery checked and it was good. So I crawled under the car after disconnecting the battery, and after disconnecting the solenoid ground lead, jabbed the battery cable and it was loose! The nut was finger tight, and it had a lock washer! "There's your problem, lady!" Those nuts that come with the starter are quite shallow. I rummaged through my jar of flat surface nuts and found a nice, tall one that fit and pretty much covers up the entire stud. Then I put not one, but two stout lock washers. Put it all back together and it cranks like a champ now.

    Hope this message finds you well. I can only imagine how busy you are with your kiddos. You are one unique, special lady with the knowledge and expertise in auto repairs. I took two years of auto shop in high school, and I pushed my girls to take auto shop in high school because even though it was never my intention to pursue a career in auto mechanics, I use every thing I learned to not get "ripped" off or taken advantage when taking my car to the repair shop. And of course to do the basic maintenance. It's funny because my kids call me when they are having "car issues." Anyways, I have a dilemma with a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Started out with issues of stalling at intersections,, idling to high or too low. And then it would not start. Everything that has been replaced: starter, crank shaft sensor, fuel pump, cleaned the idle throttle control valve, changed the spark plugs/wires. NOW the jeep will not shift out of first. Tranny service completed and the governor pressure sensor and tranducer both replaced. Still not shifting out of first. Any ideas on what it could be?

    The starter has a small toothed ring gear that turns the flex plate, or flywheel (depending on if it's an automatic or manual transmission) the big round metal ring disk with "teeth" thats mounted on the front of the torque converter which turns the engine when you crank the engine.
    But yes, this video is well done. Thanks thanks🙃

    A tip on removing the alternator, I removed the battery, then the battery tray, loosen and remove the belt, then from underneath the jeep unbolt the alternator and pull it out the bottom. Doing it this way was a little tight but I had to do it three times! one of the times in the part store parking lot. If my memory serves me rite the tools I needed were 15mm wrench 15mm socket, exstenton and ratchet, 10mm wrench, 7mm wrench

    Look whose back! And congrats on the new baby boy, hope your daughter and you are doing well too. Do have some things to add to this video though, as someone who has owned many Jeeps (and still has two) especially if they've sat for any length of time, check the ASD circuit, and also be aware there is a starter relay in the PDC under the hood, both use a relay that in many model years wasn't the best quality when manufactured. (Also a identical relay for the fuel pump) and these have been a problem in many Jeeps..including mine, replace with the better quality one when you do, they are only a couple bucks more, and you won't ever have problems with them again. Note there are fuses both in the PDC and in the kickplate panel on the passengers side for these circuits too.
    Have also had the coil go out in a old '96 that is now gone, and my 1998 Cherokee I have now.

    Had a no start situation on my 2008 Jeep GC that left me stranded twice with no warning. The ground wire to the solenoid must have oxidized over time and lost contact. The fix is to clean the spade connector with wire brush then put dielectric grease on it...otherwise it will happen again with no warning..

    If it’s the starter issue would the Jeep 🚙 still start sometimes? I noticed when it’s damp or cold doesn’t start or even crank it’s like turning the key 🔑 in the ignition there’s no response nothing. Just quiet 🤫 no crank sound nothing. Then when I turn the key 🔑 again then it starts.

    How about connections of positive wire to battery clamp or fuse box. I had that problem and it was tricky. Sometimes car would work fine and sometimes it wouldn't crank. Finally when charging went all the way to 19v I realized what it was. It was bad connection. Now after i fixed it i have different issue it dies. Sometimes or misfires. I don't know what it is now but first thing I'll try is replacing fuel pump reley. If id doesn't work probably my computer is fryed.

    • @captainjack8823

      Probably bad ignition coil. Could be something else but that's the most likely cause of backfiring.

    I wish I had your knowledge. I’m a woman who has no mechanical experience. There is so much to learn it’s hard to know where to even start. My Jeep knowledge is limited to checking oil, antifreeze, and transmission fluid levels on a monthly basis. Bought a second jeep last year and while it has multiple issues, the main issue is that it does not want to run when the temperature gets warmer than 60 degrees. It acts like it’s not getting fuel and runs really rough and eventually stalls. Let it sit for a few minutes and it fires right up and will continue down the road until it happens again. Right now it’s winter and seems to run fine. But living in Arizona, the weather is warm most of the time. No it’s not overheating when it’s running like crap. A friend has suggested maybe it’s a faulty fuel pump relay, whatever that is. Anyway, just cruising TH-cam researching for answers. When warmer weather comes in a few months off to a mechanic it will go to get sorted out 😒

    • @ChickBuilt
      @ChickBuilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment! It’s great that you know to check your fluid levels and what they all are. You are more ahead of the game than you realize just by knowing that!
      What year an model is your Jeep? Is the check engine light on? Have you had it scanned for codes? Sometimes there will be something stored even if the check engine light isn’t on. I would suggest items like the coolant temperature sensor, a faulty oxygen sensor, or throttle position sensor. All of these can cause rough running and incorrect fuel usage issues.in addition, the distributor cap (if equipped) it an ignition coil could also cause related problems.

    • @tailsof1leo180
      @tailsof1leo180 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ChickBuilt It’s a 1998 Cherokee Sport with what we think is a four inch lift on it. I bought it from a guy on the Facebook marketplace and he didn’t seem to know much about it. Yes the check engine light is on and when my friend took it to autozone they told him it had something to do with the overdrive in the engine. The airbag light is also on as well. Don’t know if this has any bearing on things but it’s actually not four wheel drive. There’s also other things wrong with it as well. But I come from the east coast where everything rusts. This 98 Jeep is not rusty at all so it’s just a case of sorting out all these mechanical issues which is why I bought it. Also, we did do a test drive before I bought it and other than the check engine light being on NONE of these issues showed up till I got it home and started driving it. Ran just fine from Nevada to Arizona when I brought it home.

      Hi John! Your shift lever cable might be out of adjustment. If an adjustment doesn’t fix it, then it is likely the neutral safety switch. I hope that helps! ~Ashley

    Don't forget to add Wagoneer to your keywords in your video titles as the engine is the same.

      I'm restoring an 87 Wagoneer as we speak. All original everything, no major dents, just needs repaint on the exterior with 2 small dents pulled and the interior looks amazing with no rips on the original leather. Only thing equally amazing is the steal of a deal I paid for it and once restored I'm just going to park it for an occasional drive. I'm already planning a buy of a Cherokee with some great deals available to turn into a daily driver so I can park the Wagoneer. You just don't see many Wagoneers in my area. I'm trying everything possible to avoid her getting wrecked by the area's notorious careless drivers.
