  • Over the past couple of weeks I've added several new pieces of gear to the studio. I've been staying up late after my sessions this week to take some time to get to know them and explore what they can do. Tonight I'm playing with one of my favorite new acquisitions the Radial EXTC-SA.
    This is a unique piece of gear that adds a lot of options to your sound pallet as it lets you use all of your guitar pedals in your normal workflow. It's super simple to use and makes creating unique sounds a ton of fun.
    So far I've used it when tracking vocals to add distortion or when mixing to add my Boss DD-5 delay unit for a cool mono delay. In this video I'm going to explore using it on a drum kit.
    This is my first time experimenting with it like this so you all are joining me for the ride. I do this kind of thing a lot so I can really get to know my gear. It's fun!
    I'm now a guitar pedal addict! If you have some cool suggestions for pedals please let me (and all of us!) know!
    Gear used in this video:
    Radial EXTC-SA
    Boss DD-5 Delay
    Fulltone OCD
    Fullton Octafuzz
    NUX Time Force Delay
    All drums were recorded through the Trident 88 console.

    Ludwig Classic Maple
    Paiste Cymbals
    Kick: Audio-Technica ATM250
    Snare: Microphone Parts SDC84
    Overheads: Roswell Pro Audio Delphos
    Overkick: MXL Fox dynamic

    I’ve had my eye on one of these because my synthesizers use line level and that messes up the gain staging when going into guitar pedals.
    Check out the Boss DM-2W Waza Craft Delay Pedal. It’s all analog, the bloom on the delays are sweet, and it just sounds amazing. It also has a custom switch that will brighten the delays. The Boss slicer is amazing also.
    You can go to a party anytime. This was time well spent.

    I own a lot of pedals since i play guitar and bass, so i also got an EXTC some time ago, in order to be able to use my various array of pedals :
    - for mixing/reamping at home
    - but also to use the pedals as insert FX, when i do live sound in small venues or small rehearsal studios that have an analog console and no outboard fx
    For instance i can bring a small pedalboard that has the EXTC but also a Decimator gate, an Empress Compressor and an Empress ParaEq, and use that on the kick channel for a small show !
    Or use this on a drum group for parallel compression (or distortion, with a tube screamer for instance).
    Or use a sansamp BDDI pedal to fatten up a snare or a kick.
    Or take a DI out of a bass player and reamping it into my own Sansamp BDDI -> Torpedo CAB M so that i can tweak a badass sound for the FOH only.
    Or use my Empress Compressor and Carbon Copy on vocals, etc...

      @@Ultimatestudiosinc Also : a good addition to that series of pedals in that "insert pedalbaord" would be a looper such as the TC Electronic Ditto Looper, that you would insert first in the chain, so that you can work on the tone without having the drummer hit his drum at the same time for instance (and i can be also handy to do some kind of virtual soundcheck if the band is late for soundcheck for instance).

    This sounds ace, could you do this with aux sends on a board, then bring it back in on a free channel?

  • @Adp0116
    @Adp0116 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Charlie, you do a great job showcasing how the EXTC works. Im wondering if you can explain to me how you have it routed inside logic. When I set up my EXTC, i get either too much feedback, or a weak sounding effect no matter how I adjust my the knobs.
    -In logic I used a send to take a pre-recorded track to an Aux track and set that bus output to output 3 of my Interface to the input of the EXTC.
    -I connected the output of the EXTC to Input 3 of the interface and made the output of that return track to
    output 1-2.
    I also turned off the output of the pre-recorded track.
    Ive also tried setting the output of the pre-recorded track to the bus input of an Aux track instead of using a send. But I'm still getting bad artifacts in the re-amped audio.
    If you have any suggestions I'd appreciate it a lot.
    Thanks!

    intriguing approach!! what are the noise floor considerations for this method? will hum/hiss noise stack up after various pedals?

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well it definitely can with some pedals. I use a Big Muff a lot now and it can hum like crazy if it's being pushed hard. If I have a sound that I really like but the noise is too much to be acceptable I'll print it and then use RX to clean it up a bit. But I don't have to do that very often. The overdrive pedals usually aren't too band and neither are the reverb/delay pedals. And sometimes I leave the noise because it adds to the flavor.

    My current setup is Guitar>SteinbergUr22MK2>DAW>AmpliTubeGuitarVST.... AmpliTube software is designed this way PedalsSection>Amp>FXLoop>CabSection>PostFX. Now the big question... I can disable sections individually in AmpliTube. What I realized is that I'd like to use all of AmpliTube except the PedalsSection and the FXLoop. I want to use real pedals and disabling the PedalsSection is no problem as I could just go Guitar>Pedals>AudioInterface>DAW>AmpliTube. But my problem is how would I use real pedals like Spring Reverb in the FX loop with my setup? Is this Radial EXTC the solution for me? It must be noted that I always play and record my guitar live. I don't want to make changes afterwards, I want to play and record with the sounds/pedals that will stay final. I mean, like any guitarist would do when playing through an amp with FX loop. I am totally confused how that would work in my case?

My only concern is I want to use it with my stereo guitar pedals, do you think that if use both effects loops (going into the L&R inputs on my pedals) it will actually give me a true stereo sound?? TIA!

    Awesome video! Subscribed. I’m just wondering about the stereo/mono aspect of this as your drum bus will be stereo but the guitar effects chain is in mono. How do you set this up? Do you just blend the mono signal of the guitar effects back in with the stereo drum bus?

  • @gmichaelprice9517
    @gmichaelprice9517 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Liked subscribed. Thank you. I have an important question. In 08 recorded 12 songs in AZ with a prominent sound engineer. I recently asked him for the editable pro-tools files of my songs for my intellectual portfolio. He told me his "discs might not turn" being 10 years old. Is this the standard ethics of top recording studios? Do engineers store their clients files for record or is that merely a discretionary option engineers have? I would really appreciate your opinion.

    • @justinbelew8275
      @justinbelew8275 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the studio. Most studios, including mine, keep a backup of client material for at least a year. There is no industry standard on such things. I personally give my clients that information up front and most bring a hard drive with them when we complete a project for me to save session files to. In your specific case, having files from 2008 is pretty far back. The engineer might have the files saved to a backup drive that is no longer compatible with modern technology. For example, if he is using a firewire based drive, he may have the files but not be able to access them in the thunderbolt 3 / USB3 era we are in. His drive from that far back might also have died. Just like in computers, they go bad. In the future make sure to bring a hard drive with you to sessions and ask for everything before you leave. Good luck!

    I was looking at this device for reamping fx pedals as well and I'm really confused about the routing. Could you clear this up for me please? Do you also need additional hardware to record it back to your interface? Reading the online FAQ It says " if you want the signal to be routed back to the XLR outputs on your rack or the Workhorse mixer section." I thought this was just a 1 work horse device!

    • @Ultimatestudiosinc
      @Ultimatestudiosinc  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are going line out of your i/o to the EXTC and back to the line inputs of your i/o you don't need anything else. It has TRS and XLR. You can use whichever fits your setup. Mine is hooked to my patchbay via the TRS connections so I can go line out to the EXTC, out of the EXTC and back to the line in of my i/o or via the "inserts" on my console. If you're using it as a standard re-amp box then you'll need to go to a mic pre.
