This is an amazing idea. I'm currently working with a few friends that live in different states, and my plan is to reamp drums and guitars in the same room with a room mic so that it sounds like we're all playing in the same room on the record.
i think this was used on matts drums on soperunknown too, some great options for speakers out there to mic up too, i guess its the most dramatic colouring effect esp when the compressor grabs it, enjoying my extc box after seeing you do it c, brilliant stuff thanks man
My educated guess as to why the PA speakers sounded better on the floor vs on the stands would be that having the speakers on the floor resemble the amount of vibration that a drum-kit would have, as opposed to having them on stands decoupled from the ground.
Sweet !!! I once reamped drums through a guitar stack with a liberal amount of spring reverb. I played with the mix going into the amp differently. I think it was more snare heavy as compared to the actual drum mix. This is the fun stuff.
Cool video man. Well explained and entertaining too! Love your studio and the tracks sound great. Love the sound of that live room....can really hear how good it would be for drums just by hearing you talk out there. Cheers from Boston....good luck with the lockdown.
Very Very Cool Charlie 🐱👓 Man that made the drums come alive with depth and pop . Defibrillator 💖 hmm reamping is like creating your own Post Preamp for colors with depth and giving the recorded tracks new life indeed ... 👀👍
Thanks Brian! Well said too. It's kind of cool getting to do this after the other stuff is done because the sounds can be tailored to what helps the drums in the music.
reamping in general or with drums is the best way to generate good room sound. cause you decide de mixing the eq to reamp... good. i wish to know about reamp digital drums. i did with an octapad, but not with a 100% digital drum secuencer.
Not exactly what I thought when saw the 'reamping drums' title. I just remember the guy who was shooting short impulses of sinewave onto drumheads from a very powerful speaker, and the drums sounded as if they were hit by a stick. Works even with midi tracks! Thats more of a reamping thing :) But this trick is really nice tho, regardless of the naming. Thanks for sharing it!
Greetings from Greece. I like your work. Can you tell me what pairs of monitors are you using? And also your opinion about them. Thank you very much. !!!!!
I've been focusing on mainly capturing live events, bands that are playing live and then taking that back to my studio to mix. The drums always sound dead because it's only close mic'ed. But, if I try to get ambient mics, I've got all the other band members as well. This might be the perfect solution for that, gonna try it out in my garage. Not the best tracking room; but, might still end up being better than what I've currently got. Thanks for the tip!!
Dude! That is almost exactly the plan I have with my new recording space if doing it with initial drum tracking ends up too chaotic to get under control. Also would be useful for creating samples for taking your room with you!
2x4 absorbers. They were in that spot from a recording session a few days before. Usually I setup my kits up on that end of the room and those 3 panel quite often go behind them. I just didn't move them.
My thought was ... Is it interesting to make a convolution-wav out of it??? No idea if that is more or less time-consuming... Looks like a cool idea to have your room on 'convolution-speed dial' :-) Really interesting video to watch. Thumbs up from me and now I have to go find the mix-video :-)
You probably dont care but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Sonny Ari i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
They weren't setup to be used together as they are different distances from the "kit". Together they get sloppy and lose some bottom because of slight phase cancelation. Sometimes I setup a third mono room option that is usually right by my mid-rooms so they can be used at the same time. (The AT4080's). I'll add that one in next time.
Dude, sorry but this is not drum reamping, this is adding a "not so good sounding and incredibly time consumer ambience reverb". That's a big difference... And i would be curious to know a customer that accepts to pay hours of your time to obtain pretty the same result as using regular plugins...
Why? I think it sounds like a big waste of time (and money if people are being charged for it). I know you said these tracks were older but you needed to go through all that to get that sound? Less is more. I definitely come from a different era of audio engineering when you had to lay down the tracks right to begin with because tape was expensive and tracks were limited.... Everything is way over thought, over processed and over produced these days.

This is one of the coolest tips I've seen in a while. Very nice. Thanks.

Always a joy watching your work - your enthusiasm is inspiring!!
Thank you so much!
Gracias por estos videos Charlie!
Nice studio,
Also cool hair,,very rock'n roll
Brilliant stuff!!
Thanks Christian!!
That was awesome. Talk about breath new life into a dead pan drum track. Great stuff!!
Thanks Jeff. Yea those drums needed a little character.
Nice!!
Great video! I loved it
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Great - thanks!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Dynamites make rooms sound like gated reverbs, its insane!
what a great trick Charlie!
Thanks Mirkko!
Thanks Charlie. I love your control room vids, not to mention your shit hot drumming!
Thanks Andy! I don't do a lot of playing these days.....

I'd love to see you collaborate and do some videos with Glenn Fricker!
Arnold that would be amazing!
That would be a blast. I'm a fan of Glenn's.
Fricker is ok, but he has nothing over Sensei Charlie.
The dynamite sounds awesome
If you send the produced signal (kick, snare etc) through for reamping, i feel it lacks the mids to sound like a real room

I thought the same with the title LOL
This is one of the methods used for Martin Hannett's, in my opinion, best sounding drums of all time for Joy Division.

Hay man! So nice to see You!
What happened to your other channels dude.
Anyways I'm a huge fan.

Give it a shot! Let us know how it works out. Even if it's not the best room with a little processing you might find something cool and unique.

Exactly!! Plus it's fun.
There's another Hi-Hat or it's just a stereo effect, during the first part?
What are those three rectangular pieces of equipment in front of the diffusers and in back of the Blumlein mic setup?
Walter Tomaszewski sound dampening, most likely.

Never seen this done before, I would have guessed it's easier to capture the room using impulse responses
ayeapprove I agree.

I wanted to hear both pairs together :(

@@Ultimatestudiosinc Oh I see, I thought it would be like having a close and a far room pair.
Thanks!
Cool.. but dunno why the song reminds me Rocket Queen from GnR😎
Ok guys, who can give me a good sounding room ???
That song sounds like "lines in the sand" by Dream Theater hahahaha
trying superunknown tricks cool as
yeh man sounds great, mono up the room and crush wit a vari mu, killer results :)

Goddamn. Engineers with too much time on their hands. Fun yes but hella impractical.
That's not re-amping! Click baite.
