Well hello Michael. I'm blown away by this. Thank you. And you're right, I never anticipated the reaction to this. It's so heartwarming to have my music shared and appreciated in this way. All I do is play from the heart. I go to where the song is. By the way, in the description notes to my video is a link to my tutorial showing in particular the intro. 🙂 Thanks again, you've made an old man VERY happy. And I will subscribe to your channel and watch 🙂.
Loved this cover - I always thought the original was the best song on the album (think I was about 12 when it came out but bought the album on release). Your cover of this is to the original what Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt was to the original of that - a bathing of pathos that just makes the song so much more. Beautiful interpretation.
Let's hear it for the older troubadours. For those who haven't crossed this threshold yet let me fill you in. I'd bet dollars to donuts he has 50+ years of playing experience, has probably played with a number of bands, and has kept his singing voice in shape over the years. His guitar playing is excellent with the flat pick / finger picking technique and his arrangement brings out the beauty of the song and is reminiscent of Johnny Cash covering "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. There's a certain poignancy age confers on lyrics like this that make them all the deeper. Great job Stewart and thank you Michael for finding this gem.
I have been sobbing for days since I stumbled onto his original... I had to hear your breakdown and let me tell you, I have shared this all over. Everyone can appreciate this
I found this months back and it is my go to version of this song the wisdom in the voice is so prevalent it adds depth and gravitas to a song that is already poignant and it is just an amazing cover
He is incredibly fluid and efficient with his picking. And his chord changes are seamless. If you practice enough it gets to be muscle memory. Your hands do what they were trained to do. Easily. And this opens your vocals up. 8:56
I ain't wasting no more years, I'm ready to make my stand... literally! He has a beautiful voice and fantastic guitar skills. Thanks for sharing. Great vibes as always! Dont forget to love each other everyone ❤
I found this last fall or so and have probably listened to it a hundred times since. Approaching the top of the middle age hill and hearing this guy do this song validated the foreshadowing of the effects of passing time I always suspected was there, but could never quite express.
I loooooooved Mr Clifford’s version here. He brought the lyrics to life and served them up with just the right sound with his instrument. I could see in my imagination this man on a quest as Clifford was singing. He took me there. Excellent.
I’ve been almost exclusively playing and listening to stripped back acoustic music like this lately. I agree, if you can make it happen with an acoustic and your voice, you’ve got a song!
Yes! I've love Stuart's cover, and share it as much as possible. There's just something about it that grabs you. A song doesn't always need to be complex in order to convey its emotion
I played this song in a band a long time ago, but I never really realized how good of a song it was until I heard the many versions that have been done slowly and acoustic. It has everything that most great songs do, great chord progression, incredible melody and awesome lyrics. Been finding myself revisiting their back catalog and listening with a new perspective. I love lines with pedal tones, when they are done right they become a key signature of the song. This one is iconic!
I've loved this song since the late 80's when it was released. Iron Maiden was my band in those days... I was a young buck in my freshman year of high school. The lyrics are truly timeless. Sooo good! Thanks Mr Stuart Clifford and thanks Michael!
Iron Maiden are the reason I'm playing guitar at all. And this song really brings me back and the lyrics are so good. Song's written by Adrian Smith, my absolute favourite guitarist of the 3 of them in the band. The original music video takes you back from everything they've made. I love this version! So simple, yet so powerful! Amazing cover!❤
Yeah agree, I know it's Steve's band and he's written some classics, but Adrian Smith is possibly my favourite out of them all for his contributions. The solo from this is superb too.
I've always loved this maiden song since i heard back in the 80s, now.... it's up there with johnny cash's cover of hurt. Poignant, sincere, moving, and hits hard. Thanks for sharing.
I woke up to your site, gotta go mow front yard before heat comes in, work to maintain home at 69 with stage 4 bone cancer, alone, but not really, just lost a best friend to ASL, 2 kids who don't care after giving them a lifetime of hard work to provide for them but my 20 yr autistic grandson my best friend makes it all worthwhile your music podcast keeps coming up and your music messages are powerful thank you for sharing to all of us out there, thank you, Debbie D beautiful song, beautiful souls amongst the rest of us out here
This is amazing. Music is the best thing life has given us. I like you have never paid attention to the lyrics of this song and I used to be in a Iron Maiden cover band lol
Always been my favorite Iron Maiden song. I’ve seen numerous acoustic versions of this tune over the years and they’re always great it seems. I think Ryan Adams has a great TH-cam version out there as well.
This is very similar to Ryan Adams' acoustic cover of this song. I'm not sure if this guy heard Ryan Adams, but it's very close. Freaking awesome, regardless!
I agree with you and I never knew the lyrics to this either. Saw them live in the 70’s. Reefer was a priority in those concert going days. Didn’t catch lyrics as much as I should have. Good one. Thanks 🤙🤙
Thank you, Michael (and Stewart)! That was great! I always know where to go when I need a pick-me-up. Thank you again, Michael. Your positivity and good heart are much appreciated. Cheers, my Brother!
Incredible. Loved this song when it came out, but yeah, never listened to the lyrics. Was such a guitar nerd. But such a beautiful take by Stuart. Thanks to you and your subscribers for bringing this to us.
Holy crap, that was amazing. I agree with you, I never really listen to the words of this song, but hear it broken down to this version, wow. Probs to this gentleman for just an incredible performance 🤘
You have to listen to that intro at 1.25 speed it was great! I was coming off a lecture vid at 1.25 and just started this one at the same speed and it was awesome.
You talked about a great song transcending genre. Another good example is Aurora's cover of Imagines Dragons' song "Believer" (albeit on piano, not guitar).
I was just thinking about that!! I watched that video a few minutes ago, and I knew all the lyrics, and I realized I had never paid any attention to that the lyrics meant!!!!! I'm not really much of a fan of that song, but now I see it with a different perspective!!
Every song that i have been a part of writing that was worth a damn was written on an acoustic. Effects are a crutch at times. Gotta build a house with a foundation and most great songs start on a strong foundation. Effects are window dressing and carpeting. This was great, i love seeing older metal heads who look prim and proper still loving metal, im one of them
It's 85 damn degrees out and I got chills, yo. And for those thinking "look at that old boy go!" dude was likely in his 30's when this song came out. Hell, he may be the same age as Steve Harris. Us old fuckers have seen some shit, lol.
I suspect Adrian Smith had written several songs already in the can when they put together Somewhere in Time because his solo project ASAP has many of the same types of themes.
Phenomenal! You should react to some of the songs on Slash's newest blues album. For instance Slash ft. Demi Lovato - Papa was a rolling stone or Slash ft. Brian Johnson - Killing Floor
Funny. I’ve been doing an acoustic cover of this same song for a long time. Played slightly different, and it’s not a tune that’s totally smooth slowed down acoustically but l like the lyrics.
I’ve never cared much for anyone doing reactions but your intensity as you watch and your explanations of keys and changes is very unique…new subscriber! Please check out an older gentlemen named Frank Watkinson (YT) and his acoustic cover of “Creep” by Radiohead…his raw emotion just hits different! 😊
The first time I heard an acoustic version of this was when Gabriela did this incredible vocal performance at age 16, ten years ago. th-cam.com/video/S-lxA13Eo1I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=DNhZZjSi9AbPmPCq
Would you be able to give us a clue to wtf Danny Gatton is doing, starting at 10:09 of this song? It sounds like Joe Satriani doing chicken pickin' licks after he really did surf with aliens. th-cam.com/video/Seg5QBpnBV4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Rvf9oiO_b77DfEYv

Truly beautiful rendition of this song Stuart. Also thanks Michael for introducing this legend to the world.
You Sir grabbed my attention from start to finish and really enjoyed it! Thank you for sharing your talents with us all and great job with this song!!

I love that you will just pull a guy off TH-cam and give your take.
So many beautiful musicians out there not on albums.
Respect.

Somewhere in Time. Every song is amazing. My fav IM album.
That was amazing. I've always loved that song, but his version was beautiful.
Agree the mark of a good song is when you can strip it down or fundamentally change it, and it still sounds good.
I ain't wasting no more years, I'm ready to make my stand... literally!

I'd like to learn it just to play around the fire when I'm camping.

Ryan Adams' cover is often covered. He nailed it hard.
God I love these gems on YT. This is what music's all about.
Proof that metal knows no age boundary. This is phenomenal. I would Spotify the snot out of this.
Just goes to show you that you're never too old for music.
Dude was probably in his 20s when this song was released.
So glad to see this cover getting some love!
This is why Iron Maiden is so good because they write the greatest songs
glad you spotlighted this. it is a great cover
Wow this is so good. Stuart totally killed it!
Woooowwwww....extremely beautiful
The best chord progression that Maiden ever wrote
After I heard Mr. Clifford playing that song, I realized it was the first time I really listened to its lyrics
This man is a gem! Thanks for sharing!
I did a cover of this version a while back. It was fun to play such a classic with an unexpected twist.
Best cover on TH-cam without contest.

Do yourself a service and read Iron Maiden's lyrics. They are some of the best lyrics ever written, all of them.
The hybrid picking is on point..

All sorts of fancy words describing what this songs doing. I'm a simple guitar player. Sings done well

Could you do a review Mk.gee - are you looking up? This is the guitarist from the Dijon video you reviewed and loved a few years ago.

I suspect Adrian Smith had written several songs already in the can when they put together Somewhere in Time because his solo project ASAP has many of the same types of themes.

Funny. I’ve been doing an acoustic cover of this same song for a long time. Played slightly different, and it’s not a tune that’s totally smooth slowed down acoustically but l like the lyrics.
That song hits different from a man of his vintage; not unlike Johnny Cash singing Hurt.
Great

Very nice…. I’ve heard this acoustic version done 10 or 15 years ago…. I wish I could remember the name of the artist..

Suggestion for next video, Jeff Daniels on Kelly Clarkson.
