I always wanted a Ford flathead and at age 73 I became the lucky owner of a '50 Merc 8CM. have worked on cars for many years, but flat heads are new to me, so I'm learning something here. Thanks for the vid!
Very cool. Been a while since I did a video but we have the engine bay cleaned up and motor ready 2 drop in! It's certainly all new 2 me as well. I'll definitely update when we get it going
@@Turnersspeedshop Did you have any trouble removing the head bolts? Looks like I'm going to have to do this on a non-running engine. Thanks for your reply.
My head came off easily. Don't know what caused the No. 5 exhaust valve to break but thankfully the combustion chamber, piston and cylinder wall look good. By the way, your Merc is cool; I love suicide door cars. And it's a priceless family heirloom too!@@Turnersspeedshop
Glad 2 hear that! I know if not sealed well those head gaskets can be a real bear due 2 corrosion since they go into the water jacket. Luckily our motor has been apart a couple times over the years. I have seen videos where they actually had 2 break the old cast heads 2 remove them. I can't wait 2 hear grandads car run again
So really nothing special about that spring. It happened 2 be something laying around the garage. Would like 2 think something could be found at a local hardware store. We just cut it 2 a length short enough w work. Really just used 2 hold the assembly together 2 gather measurements, & wanted something soft enough 2 be able 2 manipulate with fingers so the stiff spring only had 2 be fought once. I believe it was 3/4" I'd but a 1"id may have even worked. Hope that's of some help sorry I can't point u Directly 2 a source 2 purchase.
@@Turnersspeedshop Perfect, thank you very much! This is on an old SnoGo, and it's my first time ever valve job, let alone on a flathead. So it's an adventure to be sure. Learning a lot as I go. Videos like yours are very, very helpful.
Awsome! Hope it's helpful. They are definitely unique. Ran into wiringbissues with the car that have 2 be dealt with so still haven't fired the engine up but hopefully more 2 come this winter
I'm learning. I've never worked on flat heads. Seeing how the valve train is assembled is fascinating. Thanks.
As kool as flat heads are, I’m glad I don’t have to work on them!!! Lol
Definitely a unique design lol I see why they didn't last lol
Looking good. There is something unique about the old flathead Ford.
Thanx...Very much so
Fantastic video! I’ll be doing my own 4” 59A soon!
Absolutely Awsome!
Did I miss them, or did you not install the rubber seal on the valve guides?

For street use, I only use 50 lbs spring pressure for most street cams including the L-100
Gramps
Good grief!!! Changing cams in one of those flatheads was a huge chore!
I see why the design didn't stand the test of time 🤣
Where did you find those temporary springs? I've been digging but I'm coming up empty.
