    Unfortunately there are many settings in Zoom that will affect how your online lessons works. When you teach online, you do need to have quite a bit of knowledge of the settings and how you can control what goes on on the screen. Otherwise you will get so frustrated. So the sort of things that go wrong are
    1) Students can't add notes to the screen
    2) All your students seem to be able to screen share
    3) Students don't seem to have the chat room
    4) You can't work out where Zoom has gone
    5) Students seem to be able to record the session
    6) You have problems controlling their audio and video
    7) You don't know where the recording is
    8) That chat room and participants room have completely disappeared
    All of these things and many more will happen when you are teaching online and so you do need to know how to control them. There are 3 levels of setting when you are working on teaching online lessons
    1) General settings for all your online teaching sessions.
    2) Settings for a specific room ( for example you might be teaching young learners and want to change some of the settings, you might be teaching adults in a specific context online and need to set some specific things
    3) You can actually make some changes while you are delivering an online lesson too.
    What I have tried to do in this video is take you through the general settings and then the more specific ones and then finally move onto the things you might need to change while you are actually delivering your online class.
    This video is rather long but I promise if you go through all these options and understand them, then you will have much more control over your lesson and have a better understanding of why you might have a certain problem. Teaching online can be quite difficult at first and you do need to get a basic understanding of some of the settings. It can make the experience much more enjoyable.

    Just a tip: if you teach the same period every day, create one meeting and make it repeating. I have my Zoom linked with Outlook and I can then select what days to repeat and when to end. If you have the students school email and they also have access to Outlook then you can invite them and when they accept, it will put it in their calendar with a link. I believe it works with other email as well.

    Thanks Russell. This is so helpful! A couple of questions ... if you've scheduled back-to-back sessions for individual students, does each student get a unique link? And this is different from your personal meeting room? And if you enable the waiting room, what will students see while waiting? Thanks again!

    • @ttvRussell
      @ttvRussell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Sherry. Student shouldn't get a unique link. The meeting code/ID is either the same for all participants or you can invite them to your Use Personal Meeting ID (PMI) room. Check the basic settings, near the top. The waiting room will have a 'dialogue' box which says something like 'Meeting is progress, please wait for the host to allow you in' - this is likely to happen if participants go over 100, then it's one out and one in. Russell. Check out my other videos on Zoom here: www.teachertrainingvideos.com/Zoom

    Hi Russell, thanks for all your training videos on zoom, much appreciated! 1 question, I notice the Files option has now disappeared from the chat box so how can we share pdf files with students before going into their breakout rooms to work together?? Thanks

    • @ttvRussell
      @ttvRussell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kim. Thanks for your comment and question. Zoom removed the option to share files about a couple of weeks, because of security issues. My video on security mentions this. www.teachertrainingvideos.com/security_in_zoom My solution is to give your students a link to the .pdf - for example you might share an online storage place - like Google Drive or One Drive - put the .pdf in there and then share the link in the chat for the other people to copy and paste into a browser. Make sure your permissions are set so that they can only see (view) the document, not be able to edit it. In Google Docs, Slides etc this can be collaborative. That would be my solution, Russell. Hope it helps. Check out this on Google Docs: th-cam.com/video/6JyCuY1GrQY/w-d-xo.html

      Hi, Lori It is useful when you have back to back classes. Students for your next lesson are in waiting room. When you open the next class, they join you. Hi Russell. Can we have the RAISE HAND option for meetings or only webinars?

    • @ttvRussell
      @ttvRussell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question, Teresa. You should only be able to 'raise your hand' in large webinars. According to the site, "Zoom Video Webinars allow you to easily conduct large online events with video, audio and screen sharing for up to 100 video participants and 10,000 attendees. The features in Webinar are tailored for managing large audiences with branding, registration, host controls, polls, question & answer, raise hand, chat, recording and reporting". So 'meetings' are more low-key or with smaller groups. But I can see why you might want to have that feature, too, for meetings.

    • @ttvRussell
      @ttvRussell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Antoon. Zoom did disable the share file icon for a while as they sorted out their security issues. I made a tutorial about this more recently: th-cam.com/video/UzYWrkCD1uY/w-d-xo.html I don't think it is to do with having a free version, as I haven't paid for the pro version, either. However, you could share files in other ways. You can still type in a link into chat - such as a Google Doc - and ask participants to copy and paste it (into a browser).

    Thank you for your time in making these videos! I have a question, that so far, NO ONE has the answer. It's about teaching physical classes - like Dance, Tai Chi, Yoga, etc, using Zoom. Here is the problem: When I have participants in my Zoom Meeting, they can all see each other and me. As the host, I always appear in "correct" orientation to them. BUT, when I let another participant LEAD the group, like in a breakout room, she will look correct to some participants, but REVERSED to others! The mirroring function does NOT fix it - it only fixes your display of yourself. Putting her device behind her still makes it a problem, appearing correct to only some of the other participants again. So, it seems that folks with Windows machines look correct to each other, but people with iPads see the "leading" participant or some of the other participants only, as *suddenly* being in REVERSE (mirrored) direction to them. HOW do you fix that? I tried making that leading participant a "co-host," etc, and NOTHING works. I asked Zoom support weeks ago, and still am waiting for their reply. NO ONE seems to have an answer for this - how to fix it simply - and it is a SERIOUS PROBLEM when teaching physical instruction in Zoom, as it causes confusion, disorientation, and frustration. Any ideas how to solve this??

      Hi Loretta,
      I have a similar problem. I want my tutoring student to show me some written work by holding it up the the camera during our Zoom session, but no matter how she and I set our mirror-video settings, her writing is always backwards to me. As the host, I can turn off mirroring, and she can see my written material just fine, so maybe the setting only works for the host.

    Hi Russell , thank you so much for your videos - I wouldn't have been able to teach on zoom without it. If you turn off the chat for students to chat privately - how can they then send messages and files to each other in the breakout rooms? Can you have a break during teaching, can you do so with or without leaving the meeting? E.g. a 6 hours course with several comfort breaks. Can the participants leave the meeting and the come back? Can the host leave the meeting/pause it and then reconvene? E.g. after a longer comfort break, or after the lunch breake?

      Sorry I didn't see the comment until after your meeting. I'm not quite sure of the answer here. Howver, you opy the link invitation from within your scheduled Zoom meetings. I think this is a more recent feature, where an email is generated. Also, if a meeting time has passed and you haven't joined you might get an email saying participants are waiting. Under Settings - Email Notifications (below In Meeting - Advanced) - you can enable or disable a few options.

    • @ttvRussell
      @ttvRussell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jm. As a host of a meeting, there are plenty of settings which you can configure beforehand. Almost too many. You can choose whether your audio input is using your in-built computer microphone or a earphone or headset mic, which usually works better. If your students are saying that there is background noise that might be improved by using a headset. You are also less likely to get feedback from their audio going back through your computer mic. Hope that helps. More on questions and their solutions here: th-cam.com/video/4JPtzacTACI/w-d-xo.html
