In this video: It's been a while... almost 2 years since I picked up my first, and rustiest Raleigh Bomber. This project got sidelined with seized and damaged parts but it's out of retirement and ready to ride again.
I like the fact that Raleigh still kept its lugs and crank and forks on a mountain bike Another bike saved 😎
when i seen the lugs in the first video i immediately liked it, up until then i'd never even heard of a raleigh bomber. I want one now...
I have an 88 Raleigh Avanti to do soon and that's got a nice 531 lugged frame :)

Personally I might have been tempted to leave some chrome on the fork.
Either all black or all chrome for me. The bike that is!
I've just come across this vid and I must say nice job. I've not done a Bomber yet. I've just finished a 1981 ladies Raleigh Traveller. That took me 6-8 weeks to do. I've had to leave the pitting on the handle bars as chroming is expensive. That IS a stunning Bomber

Had one of these back in the summer of 83 along with four other lads,great memories of bike rides when off for the six weeks .
I got one of these when I was thirteen. Sturmey Archer 3-speed and all. I was hit by a car when on it and broke my leg. Then one of my mates borrowed it and when he stopped to lift it onto the pavement to talk to someone, the handlebars came off in his hands. A few months later, after a quick repair, I almost lost control of it at the ferry terminal which very nearly resulted in both myself and the bike having to be retrieved from the depths of the harbour. We called it the Black Death Machine. While I was living off-island in the 90s, my brother did a clear out of our parents' garage and, um, threw it in the scrap. I'm 52 now and I still haven't forgiven him for that...
I've heard that a few times! Relatives giving away or scrapping old bikes that are now worth a bit. So a car hit you, broke you leg, but the bike wasn't damaged?
I quite like rattle can painting wouldn't do it from bare metal tho, overpaint original or have a car place primer first so it's a bit thicker, might try the 2k can primer, heard thats good
Yeh bare metal is a bit risky tbh. I'll be going the 2k clear route next to see what it's like

I’d love one of these for one silly reason. My favourite band is Motörhead, who have a song called Bomber. I’d do a mixture of satin black and satin olive, along with patina. Some nice big bright lights up front, and some Motörhead stickers on it, and of course the badges would be the ace of spades cards.
Motorhead.... Don't think I've heard of them. Are they new?
I'm kidding ;) I did think about spraying my other one Olive and trying to replicate the nosecone art of a WW2 aicraft on it.
@@MonkeyShred holy shit I saw that first part and started to twitch a little! I have a bike with the Spitfire face on it, it looks kinda cool but because it’s silver, it doesn’t look as good as it would on a black or olive green bike. I doubt the bomber made it into Australia but omg if they did I’m going to be hunting it down.
I’m quite interested to know what paint you are using for the majority of your bike spray jobs? I remember leaving a very long comment one time recommending Graffiti Spray paints as the quality of the established brands is so high, with even new brands being released and blowing everyone away.... I’m stoked to see that you are saving the money on the panel spray shop😊
I'd say my first choice at the moment is Montana Gold with a 2K clear. Despite my first review.... I have actually got some decent results out of Spray.Bike since for another video, still not quite as favourable as Montana though.

After military when I started my aprentiship as a Boilermaker/welder i bought a Raleigh Bomber for use to work as I love cycling, all I did was put a BMX style handlebar on and change the rear cog from a 18 tooth to a 14 tooth and as I was super fit to add to it all nobody could keep up with me on my Bomer nomatter what bikes they had, those who know me and are reading this comment know exactly what I'm talking bout lol, when they heard my humming tires on there asses they knew it was time to get outta the way because here's Fred on hese 3 speed Bomber haha 😄👍, I cn tell many stories bout this amazing bike but just wanna say mad respect and much love for Raleigh and especially the chopper and this Bomber, peace from South Africa ✌

It's been a long journey, but worthwhile. I'd definitely choose rattle can spray paint every time. It's come up a real treat!
I wouldn't worry about the rusty bits, I like the patina, and the tan walls really are a nice finishing touch.

Wanted a bmx ....got a Raleigh Bomber for Christmas. I did like it though, weighed a ton and had a sturmey archer 3 speed. Looking forward to the video :)

A mini brake honing tool works a treat for cleaning up and sanding where the seat post fits inside the frame. I used one when rebuilt a Vindec High riser with similar problems as you had.

Definitely an icon for me. Just turned 50, we were building trackers at the time out of old gents frames and chrome steel wheels so we could ride on the fields as a BMX was crap to ride for more than 10 mins. When these came out it was like all our dreams came true!

@@MonkeyShred unfortunately not. I remember me and my mates had stopped riding our grifters and choppers and seemed to split into BMX or trackers (racers were so out of fashion then 😂). I went down the tracker route with an old hammerited chrome wheel thing with 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub. Then this lad at school turned up on a Raleigh Bomber in gorgeous metallic blue and we were all mesmerised by it. It was like everything we wanted but shiny and a lot less crap than our bikes 😂
@@denistuohy6420 The bottom bracket and fork threading has always been the issue for modernising vintage Raleighs. Fine if you want to stick with original parts but a pain if you want to fit modern BB and crankset and to be honest, as much as I am fond of Raleighs most of them were mass produced cheap, heavy steel with fugly brazing/welding. We just didn’t know any different or care when we were kids. With so many decent cromo 80s & 90s mtbs available thats where I would put my money.
@@andrewbaxter9395 probably not worth doing just for curiosity, interesting though. We used to put any random part on any bike we could get our hands on. Didn't know any better, and we loved every minute of it. Very nostalgic

Overall very well done .Another saved bike and would make a great wall hanger or window display for a bike shop .You should try to get some of those chrome clip on cable guides.

@@MonkeyShred I need to do exactly this to two old Raleighs I’m restoring. Can you elaborate on the re-riveting?
Have you riveted before? The idea is to spread the metal of a straight pin so that it won’t fir through the hole. Perhaps here a small nail or tack could be used. The head could stay on the inside of the steerer tube-push it through from the inside. Use a piece of steel tubing or possibly even copper might work inside the steerer tube pressed against the head of the tack to use as a makeshift anvil. That will stop the tack from just moving back through the hole. Cut the tack about a millimetre or so proud of the surface on the front. Use a small hammer, cross pein end (not the flat head at the front) to tap on the raised end of the tack-that should start to spread the end so it won’t go through the hole. You can move on from there to use the ball end of a ball pein hammer to tap down on the spread end to carefully knock the edges down to form a dome with edges touching the surface of the badge. A nail punch with the domed depression in the end can also be used to dome the top and push the edges down.
Practice on a spare piece of metal fist until you are happy with the technique. Good luck!

Tip. Use 320 grit yellow alu oxide sandpaper, yet sand wet if you are using the old finish. I've done this tons of times. Wet sanding gives a much smoother base to prime and seal.

great work . do ya do many rod brake style bikes. id like to see some of those being done. i know a bit about them china and india both seem to have lots of them seen a few raliegh s. i picked up and old flying pidgeon that i have started to clean up.lol lots of rust but i do like the looks of these type s. i like your attitde always calm great information as well thanks

With those lugs and black paint they always reminded me of a high nelly (specifically the raleigh superbe)
I'd imagine those basic lugs were used on a bunch of bikes throughout the range
@@MonkeyShred there's something about them, I have a Dawes galaxy to restore and it's lugs are lug lined in the same colour as the lug lining that you did on one of your videos. Really pops and makes them a feature
Do like Bombers, mine has the mudguards which does change the look of the bike quite a lot.

2.26 a clear shot of the serial No. had me wondering if you log them in any way? I used to write mine on the garage roof.
I do. I log them all in the spreadsheets I keep all my spending in.

Quite a lot of unsupported J bend at the hub end of all the spokes. Would have been a good idea to use washers under the heads to prevent flexing at the bend.

@@MonkeyShred You're welcome. BTW best get M2 "form G" washers. They are thicker. The regular types are too thin to bother with. You could use multiple thin ones but it's a faff and looks sh*t3.
