I gotta say, i really like your videos. You talk about the setup just enough to be intereting, but dont feel the need to constantly crack jokes or do wild editing, it's just relaxing bike building. Great for someone like me who's just started moving into the basics of working on my bike.
@@MonkeyShred I have a Bianchi Lynx that I'm working on that came with a Girvin elastomer fork that has froze up. It's a deep purple framed bike, and the rigid fork I put on is a beautiful teal from a Raleigh that completely clashes, but I don't want to paint because of the attractive color. Anyhow, they're old bikes, and the offset color just seems to work, especially if I can find a paint that closely matches so I could color key the stem and handlebar. Which I guess is just my roundabout way of saying that you're not the only one in this boat.
If you have a deep dive on the FB page you'll be able to find a lovely steampunk Kirk Revolution with a Girvin Vector fork. That really looks steampunk!
If you want to “repair” the chrome you can rub it with silver foil. It reverses the oxidation as Al is much more reactive the Fe. Great build as always.
It doesn't rly reverse oxidation. It just acts like a mild sand paper that doesn't scratch chrome, but removes rust that bubbled through the micropores in damaged chrome. It's temporary solution as the spot will rust again when moisture gets into the steel through existing gaps in chrome plating.
Good work. The only thing that stuck out for me was the blue fork.... would look great if you could find a chrome or black one in my opinion. But that's minor aesthetics and everyone is different - the important thing is that you've resurrected an old bike and given it a new life.
What an absolute unit. That seat angle is great. I had a good out loud laugh at the 2 step, the front cable guide falling over And the whoooooa as the front tire leaned over
Nice result; the Bull Moose cockpit really fits the theme of the build. If the spider of that crank is still straight, you can find lots of those 118 chainrings on FleaBay (my '84 Trek came with the same crank) if you laze out on swapping to a triple. Apparently, that 118 BCD was an old Ofmega standard.
The crankset might not be bent (it probably is, but..) it may be that the faces of the square taper don't mesh well with the hole in the crank arm - i.e. the crankset is not quite sitting right on the axle. I've struck this with nearly every square taper crankset - it'll have one orientation which it lines up / fits better than the other three. When mounting the crankset, try it in all positions - loosely mount it on the axle and give it a spin - in all 4 orientations (0 degrees, 90 degrees round from that, another 90 degrees and yet another 90 degrees) and see which one keeps the chainrings in their rotational plane best. Might help, might not, but I thought I'd mention it. Keep up the great work; cheers from New Zealand :)
Thanks! I guess the Bomber was designed by Raleigh as a hommage...or a copy of the old US Schwinn's etc. Suprised to hear they didn't make it over the US though.
I did think about that. Just a little concerned about fatigue in the aluminium. I've snapped a weinmann caliper arm before trying to gently bend it back in to shape.
What a nice Bike build. It works as a daily commuter and on the Weekend with other tires it works as a old Klunker. Yeah i like the Bike. Really good work bro. Best Wishes from germany
It does! It rides really well actually. I thought I'd struggle with the "big" road rings on the front but it's got enough gears to climb hills easily. Moderate hills anway!

Oh interesting. Looks like it might work on some of the tubes but I don;'t think it would get in to all those detailed areas that a wire brush and a blowtorch could.

You do not need to replace the crank.. it can be straightened reasonably well by force..Bicycle research ( no longer in business ) used to make a crank -chain ring straightening tool.. Seeing that the crank that is bent well the big chainring I would go one by 10 and do like you said by welding on some v-brake bosses otherwise I still like it the way it is it's a nice bike I want to build one of these one day
Nice build! On a different note, wanted to pick your brain. I’m building a 95 kona fire mountain atm. Wanted to go 1x8 and keep the orig cranks. Rings are 65bcd…is it poss to get narrow wide for this size or will I have to purchase different cranks say to run 104bcd? Great vids btw!👍
65bcd?? What cranks are they? I’ve never heard of anything that small. Unless… are they the ridiculous STX variety with all the rings bolting together through the narrowest point on the arm?
@@MonkeyShred yes I think it’s exactly that. It’s a pressed 3 piece bolted further down. Standard 95 Shimano IG triple set. So I’m guessing new cranks it is to fit 110 or 104 ?!
Had what I thought was similar bent crank on a Specialized Carve I was asked to sort out recently. With the pandemic lots of people are raiding the back of the garage or buying some thing someones flogging off cheap. It needed quite a bit of work and had been well abused, but it turned out the chainring wasn't bent - instead the Snail brand cheap as chips chainring off fleabay had a smaller inner radius than the SRAM crankset and the bolts had been forced to make it fit but still stand proud on two bolts. A little filing of the chainring and all was well and one fixed bike after correcting umpteen bodge jobs.. Love the Nitto handlebars - quite taken with them and thinking I may get a set sometime soon...... do PlanetX give you a kickback?
Yeh, I reckon it would. I just have that niggling thought in my head about fatigue in the aluminium. I had a look at the rear tyre after reading this (after a ride), it looks fully seated.
You have wrecked an iconic bike I had a raleigh bomber when I was ten and if it looked any thing like that pile of shit you have I would have not been happy.all you have done is made it look shit stop now before you wreck more classic bikes
Oh Lee. Nothing fills my heart with joy more than seeing someone rage at one of my creations. Thank you ❤️ The Bomber is a classic of sorts, I’ll agree with that but the ride is awful as standard. Heavy chrome rims and long reach callipers are terrible for braking. The 3 speed SA is ok but hauling that heavy frame and components around it lacks in any sort of real performance and ride ability. The saddle and bars don’t do much for comfort either. It deserved some upgrades to make it a better ride. I’m actually now tempted to customise my other Bomber too. Thanks!

Pro tip : you can watch series on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.
@Brendan Alberto Yup, have been watching on Flixzone for months myself :D
The frameset, the tires, the bars, etc. give this bike a certain attitude. Like don’t mess with me. Well done.
Definitely one of the coolest customized vintage bikes ever assembled. It still retains its pedigree, without apology at that.
Thanks Paul.
Nice build. I have actually put the same deore thumbshifters and tektro brakes on my road bike because I love them so much. So simple and reliable.
Sounds great!
Killer build! That frame really does it for me 🤘
Thanks. I really enjoyed working out this build
Really digging this set up. Also love the blue fork. Especially in light of nothing else color matching it. Don't know why but it just speaks to me.
It's a weird one. I like it but I keep thinking about black or a dark grey.

Bullmoose are a really nice bar tbh!
I did a build similar to this. lovely bike to ride. super fun.
love those tires
It really is nice to ride. Little suprised by it!
Your chain wheel is only out in one spot so a few gentle tap's with a rubber mallet should bring it true. The bomber looks great.
Yeah there are even tools for that. Similar to those for disk brake rotors.
Just use an adjustable spanner
A few teeth were out. I am just a little dubious about bending aluminium back. I've had other parts snap after being gently bent back in to place.
I can't take it! It's so damn proper!
Hope you've survived ;)

The spider appears fine. It's just a few teeth on the ring it looks like.
What a lovely bike we'll done 👍
I’d keep the Mx rear brake caliper it looks rad - I’d actually swap out the forks and put one on the front as well
They're cool and all, but I think the canti up front is going to brake a little better.
Love it xx I had a superbomber for years

Also, check that the chainring bolts are properly done up; I've also struck that issue causing the chainrings to "wobble" :)
But probably it's bent.
Oh it's definitely the outer ring that's bent. I looked a bit closer and saw it was only actually a few teeth that were out so not too bad.
I like it. I’d never heard if the Bomber before (US), and was intrigued when you first showed it. Good work.

MonkeyShred Weinman calliper arms are cast and yes, brittle but the chainring is machined and tougher, you can do it 😉

It's called a Toffee Wheel. They do work well on vinyl stripes on cars provided you don't loiter in one spot too long and burn the paint.

Interesting why you made it a gear bike I read of a SS. Still cool.
I'm not keen on SS really. It's much more usable as a geared bike.
I remember they weighed a LOT bitd, like Grifters too.
Certainly did! This one was slightly lighter although I couldn’t say by how much.
i think you can convert to hollowtech II square taper has same threads
I think the shell width was the real problem not the thread.
Yeh, unfortunately you can't. Raleigh use 26tpi, not 24tpi. There's also the issue of the 77mm shell.
