The theme music is amazing - it completely conveys the tone of New York City in the early '70s - gritty, loud, confusing, not subtle at all. The stark manner of the opening credits does the same thing. Great, great work.
I just saw the film yesterday for the first time...and was absolutely blown over. Thanks for connecting Martin Balsam's sneeze to Mathu's look at the end... I didn't realize until just now that the sneeze sealed the deal!
This is the quintessential 1970’s New York City movie. It is genius film making. New York City is an actual character in this movie. The grime, the noise, the garbage, the attitude, the City & State workers, the dialects and conversations. There are certain movies that capture the essence of NYC in the 70’s: The French Connection, Serpico, The Seven Ups.
I love watching the original classics from the 1970s and then watching the remakes immediately after which makes for an exciting night for me. I really love the Godfather trilogy.
Truest depiction of life in 1974 New York. Every reaction is 100% authentic. Every single scene. New Yorkers have this hard outer shell but even fat caz pinched a a little girls cheek on the way to his death. There is zero Hollywood in this movie. It describes New York attitudes to a tee. I get emotional every time I watch it. I really miss the old New York
This movie and Midnight Run are my favorite sleeper movies of all time. They have everything . Great cast, great story, great comedy, great action etc. I have a copy of both and watch them every Christmas.
I love 70's pre-Star Wars movies; so many classics by major studios. Five Easy Pieces, The Last Detail, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Godfather part one and two, Dog Day Afternoon, Deliverance, Midnight Cowboy, The Longest Yard, etc. Now it's comic books(not that I have anything against action movies, but that's all they seem to put out now).
I live in Scotland and visited NYC for the first time in 2016. I made sure I visited the Transit Museum where a lot of this was filmed. Brilliant movie - that music sets the mood right from the start.
Awesome score! Shakespearean-level acting ... by everyone in this film! No small (New York accent: smawl) roles in this thing. It has such a gritty New York feel to it. So many actual New Yorkers in this amazing cast! Hardly anyone says the letter "r." Catering on the set must have been malamars with a heavy smell of pastrami on rye and lots of blintzes. So many "that guys" in this cast and that includes women ... you know ... beyond amazing character actors! Fughedaboutit. Over here. Every time I watch this movie, gotta see it all the way through.
The music is so damned cool. It is bold and comes right at you just as in many of the films in that era. The 70s and 80s were the very best for great films. Now this decade truly sucks...it's like wtf..happened?
You know, I never liked the remake, THIS one had more character and Walter Matthau as Lt. Garber. I watched this w/ my dad when I was 6 and I was hooked on to movies ever since. It was the only time when I was focused is when I watched a well made drama in a theater. Gees, things are just not the same any more.
It's called "Mining the Past", which is 100% of what movie-makers are doing now. You see, the money men who run Hollywood want a *SURE THING*, which is impossible in show biz. So, they try to hedge their bets by name recognition. That's why all the remakes...
I loved watching this type of movie with my own Dad! We loved violence!! Lol! Father -daughter bonding over cop shows and action shows like the A-Team!!
There was a goof in the beginning where when the train first pulled in, a married pair R26-R36ML was shown, while the actual car used for the rest of the movie was a single unit R21/R22.
That's usually the case, but there are a few exceptions to prove the rule. I'll take John Carpenter's The Thing and David Cronenberg's The Fly over the originals any day. However, the 2009 remake The Taking of Pelham 123 is nowhere near as good the 1974 original. It doesn't even try, really.
I totally agree Jerraph....this is a great movie. The reason they remake classics is because its easier then thinking and writing a script to something new or original. Its called laziness.
From the brilliant cinematography from Owen Roizman, who worked on such movies as The French Connection and The Exorcist, and the Direction of Joe Sargent, this movie wastes no time getting into it, the actors and their characters speak themselves, the nuance in this movie, like the time Mr Grey is challenged by the business man "suppose I do anyway " you see Mr Grey stop chewing his gum for a half a second, every aspect of this movie was spectacular!
Notice, when the train arrives at 59, it dumps immediately. This means the train operator put the breaks in emergency. This is probably because they reversed ends and went into the relay position then took the train back to the yard once the producers got the footage needed.
@WarrenPace Let me see...NOT! This movie was made in 1974; Gibson's Payback was in the late 90s. Which means if there was any artistic licence it wasn't from the 1974 original Pelham 1,2,3
Yeah not easier on us service dog Handler I remember how you Pricks used to treat us passengers who have service dogs I almost threw one of you on the fucking track and take the train myself and drive it fuck out of here Union scum
@123PelhamMovie Yeah, it truly is pathetic of Hollywood to do TWO remakes of a great original movie. It shows that the film industry's losing ideas. However, I am an aspiring screenwriter, and once I make myself established, I'll make it a strong policy of mine to never do remakes...no matter how the studio suits want them or not!
The undercover cop finding that only on of the four survived would have definitly I,D. Longman as the fourth terrorist with only a fake mustache hiding his identity.
There another version of this movie (a made for tv verson Feb 1998) Starring Edward James Olmos (Miami Vice), Vincent D'Onofrio, Donnie Wahlberg. I have no clue where the 1998 version can be found or if it's available on video/dvd. As fas as I known, it only ran only one time.
why have i've never heard about this movie?! because im born in 94. but the new movie ive seen. i think the old one is better. the new one was LAME. i never heard about the old version:(
Could it be that Tarantino plagarised an idea from this for Resevoir Dogs...the bad guys all have colours as names. Mr Brown, Green, Blue, and Grey... ???
Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 by David Shire RSO Records Inc. You can get hold of this on dealers choice number 4 return of the breakheads. 1st song on the a side.
@kidfrombrooklyn66 --It aires sometimes on a network called This. It's not very good. It's not even made in New York (it's very obviously filmed in Toronto). Best to forget it ever happened.
So weird that Revoltya chose to do the character completely the opposite of Shaw. Shaw is the calmest character in the entire movie, yet is so wonderfully menacing, yet Revoltya goes way over the top with screaming and cussing and isn't scary at all.
Why do they have to put modern logos on old films? I recall the original blue "T" logo zooms out and you see "United Artists-Entertainment from Trans America Corporation" just as the opening bars of the music starts...some fathead thinks it's a great idea to slap on either the modern aka shitty UA logo or Leo The Lion from M.G.M....
well you known i never liked it all at once for something on saturday mornings over something in that fucking wrestling about that god damn whatyoumacallit match in wrestlemania bret hart vs shawn michaels happening this year cause of late 90's for why its unsafe to watch tv itself now god damn though
The composer should've got an Oscar for this.
One of my favourite Movies. Thanks Walter Matthau!
just a masterpiece of film making Robert Shaw was perfect in this role as the head of the hijackers he was a gifted actor
ernest rr gifted yet underrated
I love and adore Robert Shaw-Have you seen his son of Ian Shaw??🥰😇
The theme music is amazing - it completely conveys the tone of New York City in the early '70s - gritty, loud, confusing, not subtle at all. The stark manner of the opening credits does the same thing. Great, great work.
paktype here here ;)
@paktype you captured it, perfectly.
I just love the music. Urgent, discordant and driving, always driving - just like NY.
Great last shot. Great flick the movie industry today can take lessons from this movie. Peace
nothing better than walter matthau looking at martin balsam at the end after that sneeze....priceless.
I just saw the film yesterday for the first time...and was absolutely blown over. Thanks for connecting Martin Balsam's sneeze to Mathu's look at the end... I didn't realize until just now that the sneeze sealed the deal!
This, I think, is the most perfect movie ending of all time.

I recently did that with these movies. Alas, the 2009 remake can't hold a candle to the 1974 original.

I caught nyny in the 80s. I like to see the grit too..42nd st..vacuous movie theatres that once showed cheap porn.
not its all bloody Disney
Far better than all remakes - why try to remake a great film like this anyway?
XACTLY!
Not even close
Its an impossible task no sane can do..

I totally agree! There was some high art in films then!!
It's nice that you have uploaded them at all, but I never get tired of watching this movie!
Always liked the way the titles rocked back and forth like on a train, compelling from the start
I live in Scotland and visited NYC for the first time in 2016. I made sure I visited the Transit Museum where a lot of this was filmed. Brilliant movie - that music sets the mood right from the start.
I saw this in the movies in 1974, i was 8 yrs. old WOW! my older sister took me with her. Memories!

DC and Marvel...make tons of cash with brain dead drivel, there are no adults anymore...
The way walter matthau and his colleagues speak in the operations room. Just love that thick NY accent and all the shouting.
Fantastic Film, and an even better soundtrack!
Love the authenticity of this movie..and, feel free to disagree, NYC has a beauty and class that is unmatched--even in the years depicted here!
One of the best 1970s movies.
This is one of the monument films thats in the shadows.. best of the best !!!
I could watch this 109 times just for the soundtrack.
No remake could ever recreate that bodacious TIE!

i have watched this numerous times. classic.
1000 times better than the remake!!
10,000
Thanks for the Upload 👍 !! A new twist on train robbery !! XD
There was a goof in the beginning where when the train first pulled in, a married pair R26-R36ML was shown, while the actual car used for the rest of the movie was a single unit R21/R22.
Like when it comes into Grand Central station it's on the express track. #6 train is supposed to be on the local.
I love trains too..I ride those when I was a kid..what about the ones for the flushing line..the 7 train
Haha! I always spot things like that with films and shows set in London!
original movies are always better than the redos
MASTER BLASTER OO6 The Tony Scott reinterpretation from 2009 with Denzel Washington & John Travolta wasn’t that bad
@Hammerschlägen M well honestly you have to read the book to find out whats wrong.
Almost always. But the third version of The Maltese Falcon was the best one.
That's usually the case, but there are a few exceptions to prove the rule. I'll take John Carpenter's The Thing and David Cronenberg's The Fly over the originals any day. However, the 2009 remake The Taking of Pelham 123 is nowhere near as good the 1974 original. It doesn't even try, really.
gotta love those old movies :)
You know what I realize in all Pelham 123 movies the Mta employees get killed
This version was a lot better than the new one
I love NYC!! Will forever!!
My favorite
One of my favourite movies.
Cool man thanks for the upload! :)
Definitely a classic.
This Is A All Time Classic 👍,Better Then A Lot Of Shit Today
I totally agree Jerraph....this is a great movie. The reason they remake classics is because its easier then thinking and writing a script to something new or original. Its called laziness.
Watching this on june 13 2021 and enjoying it

In fact, no car on the IRT is 75 feet long. They've always been a little over 50 feet long.
Notice, when the train arrives at 59, it dumps immediately. This means the train operator put the breaks in emergency.

M.T.A! Local 100 T.W.U 25 years and counting!! I worked on these trains. Easy work.

@@sitdowndogbreath What did they do and what year was this?
Understood. No problem and good luck.
I love this movie!!!! Much much better than the newer one! And this is coming from a 24 year old!
@123PelhamMovie

What accent is that at 2:52.
NYC black accent?
Just great
Hector Elizondo!!! :-)
The undercover cop finding that only on of the four survived would have definitly I,D. Longman as the fourth terrorist with only a fake mustache hiding his identity.
You mean the guy who fell off a moving train then got shot? Pretty sure that guy was busy getting surgery.
That music is to awesome

Great great film..Quite why someone felt the need to create the abortion that is the remake is quite unbeievable..
At least the original survives!!
Classic.
I'm taking your train.
Your what!

Sorry but it sounds like you recorded it with your phone
Toolman Tim's neighbor was Mr. Brown
the movie starts @ 1:38
lol the conductor is wrong. IRT cars are about 51 ft long. BMT and IND cars were up to 75’ long.
This movie is more realistic and in those days New York was in pretty bad shape
Could it be that Tarantino plagarised an idea from this for Resevoir Dogs...the bad guys all have colours as names. Mr Brown, Green, Blue, and Grey...
???
homage to this flick
song?
in intro anyone?

the re-make with Travolta/Washington was ok...but does NOT compare to this!!

Is it just me... or does this theme sound similar to the beginning credits theme to Mel Gibson's payback???
8:45 I still have the MTA 70's symbol, on my uniform.

the 1998 version was a TV movie and it was really horrible. filmed in torontos TTC not even in new york
Almost 50 years later, the NYC subway essentially looks the same.
What do you mean the infrastructure
You do know what Swag means?
swag is slang for worthless junk. It comes from the old word for stuff that washes-up on the beach after a storm...
The Remake Sucks!
Jerry Holland the conductor looked so handsome and sexy in that uniform..if I offended...please tell me
Yo where's part 6 init not fxcking appy but it'll have to do init trus me I'm bare mad yo

The racial prejudices were so comical and avoidable, you can’t help but giggle 🤭
You just can’t compare the original 1974 “The Taking Of Pelham ONE TWO THREE” to that garbage reboot 2009. Sheer fluff no substance!!!!!
David Feinstein the 2009 version wasn’t that bad
@@theman2017inc oh yes it was
Denzel Washington turned in some memorable work in the 2009 remake
