As someone born and raised in NYC.. this movie truly captures NY of a certain era, if not entirely capturing the city's eternal pulse , where one would still find these same types of in your face people, from the police to the passengers !
Originally they wanted the train to crash in a catastrophic way onto a platform but they ran out of the money for the budget😂 Also at 7:02 that person screaming was purely improvised
Some of the actors playing the hostages are noteworthy; the hippie girl is Matthau's step daughter. I believe another of the women is related to director Joe Sargent.
If you really watched this movie (which I know you didn’t cuz none of us would be here) they uncoupled the train at the start of the movie because I guess 1 car is better than 10?
One of the hijackers was a former motorman. They probably knew the automatic breaks would catch it at South Ferry, but weren't sure if the train would derail on the curve before then. That why they said with luck, the hostages would be released unharmed.
There is supposed to be an emergency break pull cord at each end of the car. But it is possible the hijackers also disabled that as they disabled the deadman throttle. To make sure no one in the car could stop it.
No graffiti XD. Also it made sense for Pelham 123 to be separated as the R22-type cars are single units. Not like the one from 2009 where they legit made an R62A into an R142 “B” which I call ugly.
At the time of filming, the MTA was very much in its anti-graffiti years. They insisted that none would be permitted to be shown in the film. The filmmakers argued against that on the matter of realism, but the MTA held fast. At the least, we have the pleasure of beholding these cars clean.

Fully agree. Came from the same era.
I always appreciated to fact that the filmed this on real NY subway cars, moving through real tunnels.
Love this movie. The original, is the best.
I agree
I went to the movies twice to see this Golden movie
The old man was RIGHT about the RED lights on the train track to instantly and automatically STOP the train!!!!!!!!!!!!😂🥰😇

Now that's a fucking great movie.
Great movie

This is Frank Costanza…. you think you can keep us out??

70 miles / hour is a lot o velocity ( i tink very deeply)
Why didn't they pull the emergency brake?
It was disabled by the villains. Besides, if the old Jewish guy is correct, the "stingers" would trip some sort of failsafe for the train. 🚇
The bronx in harlem had the best movies fort apache the south bronx across 110 street harlem etc
"Ohhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm . . . Stop!"
love her!
Why is there 1 car instead of 10 cars?
The hijackers un-coupeled the lead car from the rest of the others at the beginning of the movie as part of the hijacking plan.

My gut tells me that they wanted to derail the train if it would slam into the #1 train that would of been terrible

Does This Train have hold brakes

No graffiti XD.

7:00 😫
Why is the train running?
Hijackers demands were met by this point in the film, and they were just letting the hostages go while ensuring they don't get caught by the cops.
Also they disabled the dead man's handle that's why the train sped up and rig it to stop at a red light otherwise it would have crashed
5:28 5:29
is the train suppose to be Kawasaki
R142A???
No this is the 70s not the 2000s
Well the remake sucked.
