      It’s better than the original movie tbh not to say it’s crap but it’s on the upper end of mediocre outclassed even by its own magnificent score, apart from the dynamic between Shaw and Matthau at his end... _“Pity.”_

      On Facebook, someone recently asked, " What film score would you like to be awakened to in the morning, as opposed to a regular alarm? ". Most people answered with typical mainstream scores. I said, " The Taking of Pelham One Two Three ". I've probably seen the film close to 50 times. I never get tired of it. I wouldn't give 10 seconds of my time to the remake.

    I operated , like most train operators, all the NYC lines. This music in the most uncanny way conveys the rhythms, the deep frequencies, the dangers, the sudden screams and the rushing unknowables of a 200 ton machine hurtling through the dark entrails of a city collapsing. What a musical triumph!

    One of the best movie title themes EVER. Great movie too. The re-make doesn't hold a candle, especially the way they re-wrote it. In the original, the movie ends when Walter Matthau is on his way out of Martin Balsam's apartment after questioning him as a possible suspect. Just as Matthau is closing the door to leave, Balsam lets out a sneeze -- just as he did when he was talking over the subway car's radio to Matthau during the hostage crisis. The look Matthau gives Balsam when he re-opens the door is priceless and "makes" the whole movie. NONE of that was in the re-make.

    • @BrokenCurtain
      @BrokenCurtain 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Great to see I'm not the only one who remembers the look on Walter Matthau's face at the end. :)
      The entire movie was full of things like this, each side character had its quirks and little oddities that made them stand out. I still love watching it everytime they show it on TV.

    Great Job Folks!.. Expertly edited with the music....One small note, and I mean this more as a kindly suggestion... The very last frame....after the sleepy drunk slides on the bench... The last frame should be Matthau's "I got ya" face at the door.... But this is still great.

    Despite the subject matter, the film was quite funny. I always remember: "What the hell did they expect for their lousy 35 cents - to live forever?" and: "One of my towermen dropped his wedding ring down the john." Later it transpires it was his female co-worker's ring. He asks her indignantly: "What were you doing with your hand down the john?" I could barely hear the TV where I was laughing so much.

    Saw this movie last night. I recognize just about every location shown in this film. I worked at or near Park Avenue South for two decades, and in downtown Manhattan when I got out of school in the early 1980s. I also commuted to work on the number 6 train, which is the Pelham line, so I recognized almost all of the subway stations as well. The place where the police car flipped is very near 4th and Broadway, where Tower Records was once located.

My son recently looked at an apartment on East 8th Street and we had a cup of coffee next to the "Cube" which you get a quick look at when the car flips - the street shown in the movie between Lafayette Street and 3rd Ave. sis now paved over with tables and chairs.

    Great video! If there's a cooler way to introduce a character than a freeze frame and a caption, I don't know it. Love this score, too. I transcribed the main theme a while ago - hellaciously difficult because it's a 12-tone row but the amazing thing is that Shire derives the entire score from that one row. It's like a mashup of Arnold Schoenberg, Neal Hefti and Curtis Mayfield.

    Fantastic editing job! I would only suggest adding Jerry Stiller's name to the "starring" list as he is now, with 20 combined years on television in top-rated shows "Seinfeld" and"The King of Queens," the best know cast member besides Walter Matthau, and he has 10 times more lines than any of the "Brown," "Blue" "Grey" and "Green" quartet (Tarrantino's inspiration for the character nom de plumes in "Reservoir Dogs").
    LOVE this film. Favorite line, when Robert Shaw looks a flamboyantly dressed black man up and down with disdain on the subway platform and he responds with,"What's the matter dude? Ain't you never seen a sunset before?" HA! As I have bright orange hair, I've used that line many, many times in my life!

    I have to tell you I LOVE this video. When the remake came out I'd tell people about the original, however when describing it you really can't do it justice, so I'd direct people to your video and just let them see. you captured it perfectly!
