Really interesting, I never thought of it like this but there is a very gradual evolution between these games. Even though 2 is my favourite, Crash 3 has the best bossfights of the trilogy imho

I recommend looking into the prototype koala kong fight, where the rocks are launched at an angle depending on where you stand relative to the rock's center. Then the mechanic of moving rocks to the sides makes a bit more sense as it is sometimes necessary for proper positioning. The aiming was rather clunky though and im glad they abandoned it, despite the simplification. They also removed 2 (iirc) phases which were just more of the same but with more tnt.

Sending Kong's _own_ projectiles back to him is very different from firing your own projectiles at him. Once you get rid of that, it's fair to say you have a completely different boss fight, instead of an incremental refinement.

I understand you, but he kinda get a point. Crash 1 mechanics's a little bare bones compared to Crash 2's and Crash 3's, since Crash 1 doesn't have a shooting mechanic for Crash, depending on enemies attacks to make different approaches of attacking besides spinning on them.

I see Kong as them doing a projectile fight with the very bare bones mechanics Crash 1 has. I've always considered C1 a prototype: look at all the different environments they try, the various mechanics they experiment with, the set pieces. At times it feels like ND are throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. There are lots of failed ideas in C1 too.

Also, beating N. Gin in Crash 3 gives you the Fruit Bazooka, which is the best superpower in the entire game.

This is what more video essays should be like. You have your idea, and you give the context for that idea without pontificating around the point.

I find it incredible how much these bosses have in common yet how different and unique they feel from one another. The bullet hell aspect especially shines in Crash 3 N. Gin's fight

When I introduced my wife to crash bandicoot, she beat N. Gin's Warped boss fight on her first try.
It was literally the most attractive thing she's ever done. 😍 I'm a lucky man.

Its an interesting take on Koala Kong's boss battle tnt attack being a placeholder simply to make the battle artificially more difficult.
In fact, I believe in the prototype version of Crash 1, Koala's Heavy Stone trajectory was affected by the angle you spun the rock at.
And the battle was overall a lot more difficult with an extra hit point added onto him.

Love seeing gameplay analysis like this of the classic Crash games. Nice work, man! It honestly never really occurred to me to connect the gameplay dynamics of the Koala Kong fight with that of CB1 Cortex, CB2 N. Gin, & Warped N. Gin. Now that I think about it this particular boss formula is still being used in modern Crash; like, it's basically the recipe TfB used for the "Stage Dive" boss in CB4: IAT. You've got Dr. N. Gin sitting in some place far away from Crash & the player's job is to dodge his twisting drum lasers & return his charging minions back at him (though it's more of an auto-aim thing like Kong). It's a fantastic boss battle (one of the best in the genre IMO), & I think its quality puts yet another feather in the cap for this particular boss formula.

Subbed, really enjoy some crash content, especially relating to the first game, good analysis, I'm pretty sure I watched your stormy ascent video years ago too! Please do more crash 1 content

Hey Jimmy! Any chance of you ever finishing FF7 Rebirth?? Ps1 ff7 mods are hard to come by and id love to have a bug free version for all 3 discs??

Oh man, that takes me back. Realistically it would take some time. I do still have a bunch of files, but the modding tools I used corrupted quite a bit of data.

You and your rebirth mod are still brought up on forums, and even had a few articles made in the past year talking about how you predicted the rebirth name when they announced the new name for the sequels remake. As someone that loves when he can play new content on original hardware, it would be awesome if you could consider at least finishing the mod. Even if that means not adding much new stuff. Just finishing the 3 discs with what you originally planned? Either way im a big fan and wanted tell you that you had a creative weakness system in the mod as well as the early enemy item steals, and weapon and equipment changes and whatnot!

Kong's the worst boss? Really? I thought it was one of the best: more interesting than Papu Papu, and certainly a million times better than the mess-of-a Pinstripe.

The ripper roo crash 1 fight was always more annoying than kongs
Papu was easy because it was the first boss, but pinstripes was more luck based

    • @jbreckmckye
      @jbreckmckye  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I actually think Pinstripe is an excellent boss; it's a game of cat and mouse where you're looking for the right opportunity to attack and when to play it safe instead.
Papu Papu, I mean he's an entry level boss. I would say his main flaw is that you can jump on his head at any time, with maybe a 5s untouchable window after, so you can KO him in about 20s if you know what to do
