    There are so many beautiful places to visit in Lebanon, it's better if you can travel with a native Lebanese. I was born in Beyrut but live in Broumana. I highly recommend a visit......it's so calm beautiful views and of course the hospitality all over our beautiful country is something we love to show. It's so lovely to see tourists that are not Arab go to Lebanon.

      Yes indeed, it feels like we are doomed, watching our country in free fall. The sectarian leaders have dragged us into corruption and have broken the country.

    I want to point out that the only reason you might have found stuff cheap like renting the car, is because you paid using US dollars. Due to the economic crisis in lebanon currently, US dollars are so much more valuable. Also I am sorry because of the kids asking for money. These are very common in Leanon due to a lot of poor people

    Keep in mind that this video was filmed in February of 2021 -- Back then, 8,500 L.L. was a pretty good exchange rate. Thank you for looking out for me. I was not cheated in any way.

      @@LM-pk4uo Yes, I rented a car and drove up to Tripoli, down to Saida and Tyre, and out to Baalbek and other destinations throughout Lebanon, from my "home base" in Achrafieh, Beirut. Indeed, parking was an issue in several occasions and yes, for a Texas girl, traffic at times felt like a game of chicken. Truth be told though, by the fourth day or so, I had the double honk down and I was flying past most cars, deliberately omitting lanes and traffic lights and signaling... The “Unagi” comment was hilarious! 😂
    Now that I’ve gotten this out of the way, I can comment on the rest of your video.
    I thought it was a very nice video-especially that it captured many aspects and parts of Lebanon during the lockdown. I also felt like I should have warned you about driving in Lebanon, but for some reason, I assumed you knew, given the fact that you had been to Egypt (far worse, in my view)! Anyway, I wanted to see more of the ancient ruins of Baalbek, and I’m hoping you could still share more of it. I loved being there; ancient history is fascinating!
    I hope the two of you are safe, and I hope to see you in Boston. Take care!

    The reason it feels so dense (for the most part it is) is because you were driving along international routes (Beirut-Damascus first before taking the Baalbek-Homs road) so you’ll find buildings all along the way. With cars going in opposite directions, motorcycles popping out of no where, no one following any signal or sign, and kids jumping through your window and throwing stuff at you to force you to buy from them, how can it get any better than this?

You guys should hook up with people who know their way around the country as if you use the public roads it would be 100% populated and cliche-like. Many times in this very video, taking one turn left or right would have got you into amazing places! Just one small turn!

    You are absolutely correct in your assumption, there is usually an older guy who leads the pack.
    Although it might come off as harsh but the best thing to do is to avoid giving them money in the first place. Instead offer food/drink. Finally I command you on your courage taking that road. I left Lebanon a couple of years ago and I still haven't driven that road.

Can a traveler still enjoy Lebanon or are things so bad right now that it is impossible to eat, explore, and connect with local people? Appreciate your insight and great content! Lebanon is so beautiful!

    • @20CamelsEmily
      @20CamelsEmily  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey, Theodore! I left Lebanon in June, and I've heard that the situation has significantly deteriorated since then (more intense gas shortages & blackouts), but while I was there it was very much still enjoyable. I was only affected by 2-hour per day power outages, and difficulties finding some items at the pharmacies.
      In my experience, the Lebanese are very resilient and resourceful. Despite everything they are going through right now, they are still incredibly friendly and hospitable towards guests. I would imagine it is still very much possible to have a good time there.
      If you're prepared to deal with blackouts for a few hours a day & potential issues finding a gas station that actually has petrol (I didn't experience this myself, but I've heard it's going on), that's the worst I imagine you would have to put up with.
      I would go, but watch the news in the weeks leading up to your trip in case of civil unrest that could make it dangerous to go. I'm not sure how much worse things will get before they get better.

    • @RKN998
      @RKN998 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hi Theodore, Lebanese here, as the channel owner said, if you don't mind looking for gas, it should be doable. i don't think hotels get power outages as much as residential buildings, so that shouldn't be a problem. also us Lebanese always welcome tourists! it actually gives us hope for our country in these testing times

    • @Atomic-Blast-
      @Atomic-Blast- 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Theodore, i am Lebanese and living in the country. Lebanon currently is facing a very hash time. Power shortages, pharmacy products run out, and gas shortages. In fact, i am writing this while there is no electricity. I believe that civil unrest is and will happen, so if you can, explore the country later on. Things are shaking currently. Yet if you decide to come here, and have fresh dollars, you will have a blissful time with how cheap the country currently is. (1$ = 23,000 L.L. almost, which 2 years ago, 1$ = 1515 L.L.) So, i would play safe and not come in here in these times, yet you could try it out, just try to avoid the southern part of Lebanon, as civil unrest is being active the most over there.
      Visit Ehden or Faraya at the very least, if you visit :)
