There isn't anything specific that I've read, but I know that fans have speculated on Reddit about the comparison between Oberst's lyrics with Dostoyevski's... So there's that.
if you listen closely enough, they're all the same tune really, because it's from the same artist and he has stayed true to himself while exploring different ways of conveying that. listen from beginning to end. on repeat.
@@wolfcub1835 i most definitely have. i’ve been with conor from the beginning to now. ;) and actually his progression from those albums is just what i mean.
Anyone have insight on the Reagan/Russian authors line? All I got is that Conor was probably young when Reagan was in office. And with the attention on Russia he got curious and looked into reading the Russian classics. But I don't know what's uncanny about that. Anyone?
Marx and Lenin? Maybe? I'm not sure that's a direct link, but they might be 'the Russian authors' that would most relate to politics, and given WHEN Reagan was in office, that would jibe.
He couldn't of meant Marx, as he was German. Really it is probably the "big three" of Russian authors that he is referring to, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Tolstoy. All three of those writers would be more apt, as they explore political and philosophical themes (also, I'm fairly certain he has referenced Dostoevsky in a few songs). Also, Oberst is a liberal, as confirmed by the Hitchens line and his past political affiliations . . . so while he very well might have read communist theory and philosophy, he probably doesn't particularly adhere to it. Dostoevsky, Chekov, and Tolstoy all have themes that would adhere to the theme of this song in particular. To be frank, I don't know if he has read Marx and Lenin "through and through" (which implies some kind of adherence to that theory and philosophy) because of how he talks about art -- Marxist aesthetics are fairly easy to spot, and Conor never speaks about art in that way. I'm not saying he has ever picked up a Marx, Lenin, Trotsky, Engels, Mao book, but the Russian "big three" are much more likely.
Test Channel Theres also a chance he didn't actually read them all that much, rather used the line figuratively to describe how dissent was sewn into him by Regan, idk
Follow his lyrics and interviews and you'll see that Conor's a left-winger and not a liberal. Not all socialists follow some hard Soviet line on art and aesthetics.
All he means is that Reagan's uncanny influence on Conor is that Reagan's association with solidifying capitalism in America ("he made a joke of the poor people and that made him a saint,") made Conor personally become more interested in communism/socialism (Russian authors like Lenin and such)
These songs are decent but Jesus when he starts blowing that harmonica my brain splits in two. Slaughters that poor instrument just as badly as Dylan does. Just because it's a simple instrument to play doesn't mean it doesn't take skill to play beautifully.
my main man conor puttin out quality music
This is a masterpiece. Let it be known....
Well... it's a little uncanny...
the emotion he puts into the live version gives me such a new perspective on this song he sounds almost pissed off during the chorus i love it,
I miss Christopher Hitchens too.
Gosh, I can really hear Dylan's spirit in this song.
Even people who never new Hitchens when he was alive, now when they look at his debates and read his stuff feel like they miss him.
Christopher Hitchens was a shameless charlatan pseudo-intellectual
I miss Alexander Cockburn.
True, but Sweet Sylvia was a genius.
Dylan's still alive.
This guy is the greatest songwriter since Cohen/Dylan
His lyrics are breathtaking
Definitely Conor's finest solo work yet.
I never thought he would match the genius of wide awake its morning but I think he has
Dang this is on par with John Prine and/or Warren Zevon in cutting satire; nice work Bright Eyes!
Good call. Zevon was one of the best when it came to that tounge-in--cheek stuff that still hit you hard. Conor's killing it too
ok, conor for president
“Some people say you sound a lot like bob dylan” “well, maybe bob Dylan sounds a lot like me?!”-Conor Oberst 2020
💕 LOVE IT 💕
I just watched this on TV,we should jam hahaha
I could guess which Russian authors he was talking about, but does anyone know specifically which ones he meant? Perhaps via interview?

Aidan bolduc pretty sure he's talking about Marx
Marx is a well-known German, that'd be something I don't think Oberst wouldn't know.
Lenin, Stalin
Why tf is saint dymphna blocked in the US? am i missing something?
My aong- I never expected anyone to say these words.
this is literally the same melody as His Bright Eyes song "Classic Cars"...

+daydrmnation you'll be sure to be taken on a ride, but it's nothing unfamiliar.
haha it's really really similar yeah. I still like both songs though.
@@daydrmnation lol you’ve clearly never heard his albums noise floor or a collection of song recorded from 1997-1998

Real gear.
Somebody misses Sylvia Plath?
“Kiss me, and you will see how important I am.”

I’m sharing with my mom and sisters 🤓😂
I thought the intro was Dylan
Robin :(
SHE WAS TEN
who refers to Christopher Hitchens? atheists say yay!!!
This song is perfect, but harmonica is a crime.
See also: Bobby Dylan / Laura Jane Grace
*smashes guitar strings* *blows furiously into a harmonica with no sense of musical rhythm* yeah that's some good quality music right there
works, because I'm here.
I feel like you're being sarcastic., But I honestly feel this is true., lol., Like yes, it is quality music sir.
